This programme became truly ‘Selwyn Wide’ with the Assessment Process also now including the Malvern area for the first time this year. Over 150 businesses were assessed last year and there has been a clear improvement in Sustainable Practices year on year.

By way of ‘launching’ this new networking group Lincoln Envirotown has invited all Business representatives to come along to The Rolleston Community Lounge on Tuesday, October 11th to hear about the future of the Awards and how the Business Network aims to help with achieving more sustainable practices in the work place. A short presentation from two guest speakers is planned. Dr TracyTracy-Anne De Silva from Lincoln University's Department of Financial and Business Systems will speak briefly on the state of Environmental reporting in New Zealand and the Selwyn Responsible Business Awards.

There will also be a member of the Enviro-Mark team talking about the scheme and how they may be able to help businesses

minimise environmental impact and save money doing it.

Another theme of the evening will be a question and answer session with a prominent

member of Selwyn District Council's waste management team to answer queries about a businesses' waste disposal and recycling.

Enterprise IT Consultant and local resident Tony Herstell has identified a transport need that isn’t being addressed by any of the other providers currently on the road in this area. He assures readers he has gained the support of both the Selwyn District Mayor, and the Selwyn District Council CEO for this initiative.

Tony is in the process of researching and setting up a direct service to the city for workers (mainly administrative and office employees) from Rolleston to Christchurch city at a timetable more suited to these occupations.

“There will be no stops between Rolleston and Christchurch Centre,” Tony said, “and it will operate like a public park and ride. If it operates like this then SDC have suggested they may be willing to provide car parking for commuters’ vehicles.

“I have been in consultation with some huge city corporates all of whom are keen to see their staff assisted with transportation - without the need to arrange carpools, drive a vehicle singly, or travel at hours more suited to schools and/or building sites.

Tony plans to operate two coaches in the morning - one at 7:30am and the other at 8:15am. His return times would be 4:45pm and 6pm. However he stresses that these times and schedules are a guideline only and will depend on what people require.

“This is a private service, not connected to any company or bus business - which is why we can be flexible to the needs of travellers, and also why it will get off the ground quickly and get underway.

“There are a huge number of benefits to a park and ride type of operation with the obvious

ones being: travel times, no parking to worry about, reduced cost of vehicle maintenance/ parking/fuel etc., as well as the environmental impact of shared transportation.

“It’s also support for Military Staff in Burnham (including USA staff),” Tony added. “Burnham Camp is due to explode in size as two Battalions, Basic Training and even Officer Training are moving to the facility.”

Many businesses in the area will have been the recipients of a letter from the Selwyn District Youth Coach. The letter details some wonderful initiatives that local business owners can be part of. Selwyn youth coach Hannah Cossey is the local contact and some of the letter’s suggestions are sure to be able to be taken onboard by a range of businesses and individuals.

Hannah initially sets out to outline her position and points out that the Youth Coach service (in conjunction with the Two Rivers Community Trust) is a free one provided by the Ministry of Social Development, for young people aged 16-17.

Selwyn District Council is encouraging local residents to vote in the local elections before voting closes at 12 noon on Saturday, October 8th.

Voting packs have been sent to enrolled voters and as at Wednesday, September 28th, voting papers from 21.5% of eligible voters had been returned. This is slightly above the 2013 figure of 20.5% at the same stage of voting.

By ward, Malvern and Ellesmere have had a significantly higher proportion of voting papers

returned to date than Springs or Selwyn Central wards.

“The last day for people to post their voting papers is Wednesday, October 5th - if papers are posted after this date they may not be received in time to be counted. From Thursday, October 6th until the morning of Saturday, October 8th you can still vote but will need to return your voting papers to a ballot box to ensure your papers are received by 12 noon on Saturday, October 8th when voting closes,” said Selwyn Electoral Officer Douglas Marshall.

Marshall Voting ballot boxes are located at Darfield, Lincoln and Leeston Library and Service Centres, and at the Council Headquarters in Rolleston. Voting papers can be returned at these facilities between 8.30am and 5pm Monday to Friday, and to libraries on Saturday from 9.30am up to 12 noon. Lincoln Library is also open late until 7pm on Thursday.

The Council’s Rolleston Headquarters will also be open from 9am - 12 noon on Saturday, October 8th for voters to drop their papers off (normal service centre functions won’t be available).

In Selwyn, people will be voting for the roles of Mayor, local ward Councillors and if they live in the Malvern ward, Malvern Community Board members.

The kinds of things a youth coach can help with are:

Clark Land Surveyors Ltd At the September meeting of the Rolleston Combined Probus Club, member Neil Bennett told those attending how some time ago he had visited ‘Men’s Sheds’ in Australia and wondered if the concept would be suitable for Rolleston.

Forward a few years and with support from Selwyn District Council and a small committee, some considerable time was spent developing what has now become a welcoming place for men to congregate and share their practical skills.

For many men having had workshops of their own for untold years, but feeling the loss of these after downsizing their homes, the Men’s Shed initiative provides a welcome

It is part of the Rolleston 150th anniversary celebrations which feature a free show on Saturday, October 15th. This celebrates Rolleston’s past and present with displays including traction engines, vintage cars, motorbike displays and field testing, tractors, military displays, fire engines, shearing and vehicle parades.

CultureFest is a free event which will showcase the district’s cultures with free performances, fun activities, craft and food stalls, along with activities for kids like a mega slide, SNAG inflatable golf, bouncy castles and pedalmania.

Selwyn MP Amy Adams has announced that Kirwee will soon benefit from improved mobile coverage, thanks to a two-stage plan developed by Vodafone.

“I have written to both Vodafone and Spark, advising them that the cu rre n t p o or m obile coverage in the Kirwee area is unacceptable and needs addressing as soon as possible”, Amy said.

“I am pleased to advise that Vodafone has come up with a two-stage plan to improve coverage in the Kirwee area,” Amy added.

“Stage One of the plan will involve the installation of a temporary Cell on Wheels (COW) site near the local tavern, which Vodafone predicts will give good coverage for the township.

“Stage Two will involve the construction of a permanent

cell tower in the township. At this stage, Vodafone’s preference is to construct a fifteen metre hybrid cell tower on an existing street lamp in Kirwee township, but this will depend on gaining local community support and resource consent from the Selwyn District Council,” Amy commented.

Amy indicated that she would be working closely with the relevant authorities, including the Council, NZTA and Chorus, as well as the local community, to ensure that the plan can be implemented as quickly as possible. She noted that Spark had also indicated that it planned to improve mobile coverage in Kirwee by installing an additional antenna on its existing tower at Aylesbury. Spark hopes to have this work completed prior to Christmas this year.

PESTS IN NEW ZEALAND New Zealand was discovered in 1769 by Captain Cook. At that point in time New Zealand had about 130 native bird species and two mammals introduced by the Maori - the rat and the dog. They were fed on fruit and vegetables.

In Captain Cook’s diary he stated the bird song was deafening and our bird life was the most amazing he had seen. Since then, Europeans have introduced 135 bird species: black birds, starlings, thrushes, ducks, all the finches and more. Then they introduced 35 different mammal species from wild pigs to Himalayan Thar.

Amongst them were cats, ferrets and stoats; all predators. So now our native birds are not only losing their environment to farming and forestry, they have other birds competing for food and predators that evolution had never prepared them for; so they have no natural fear. Possums not only eat their eggs, but also crash around in the tree canopy at night, knocking baby birds out of their nests.

People put bells on their cats, but I have seen a cat with a bell jump up and catch a fantail a metre off the ground. One introduced bird, the magpie, introduced from Australia about 1860 to Canterbury, is a terrible problem for our natives as they are very territorial and kill other birds. Their numbers are increasing at a scary rate and need to be controlled to help preserve pockets of native birds.

The NZ Breast Cancer Foundation needs local volunteers to help with its Pink Ribbon Appeal on Friday October, 14th and Saturday, October 15th. ‘Give two hours’ is the plea.

All up, 9000 volunteers in the “pink army” will raise money at more than 1000 collection points, covering New Zealand top to bottom. Their efforts will fund research into new personalised treatments, support for women going through breast cancer, medical equipment for hospitals, and life -saving awar ene ss and education programmes around the importance of mam mogr a ms for e ar ly detection.

The number of women being diagnosed with breast cancer is still going up - it’s now more than 3000 a year - but survival is improving, thanks to earlier detection and improved treatments.

However, the NZBCF’s longterm vision is “Zero deaths from

breast cancer”; getting there will mean pushing for new frontiers in early detection, treatment and patient support.

“We can’t just carry on as we are, when so many women are still dying,” commented Evangelia Henderson, Henderson chief executive of the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. “The future of successful cancer treatment lies in personalised treatment targeted to each individual patient, and we’re determined to help our health system get there. That means not only addressing gaps in the current system through our grants for medical equipment, training of doctors and so on,

but also making sure that we get new treatments faster, and that we look at new paradigms for patient support. We’re also funding our best researchers to move into leading-edge studies, such as trials of new DNA tests to identify which personalised treatment is best for a patient.”

The annual Pink Ribbon Appeal funds a large chunk of the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation’s work, and is the most visible of its events in October, which is Breast Cancer Month.

Folk may have noticed from all the signs going up that Clearview Primary is holding their first ever fete on Sunday, October 16th at Broadlands Drive, Rolleston; and they’re more than a little excited about it.

It is going to be a fun filled day

for everyone with over one hundred fantastic food and trade stalls, as well as a whole da y of m u s ic, b an d s, entertainment and displays.

There will be free modelling, balloons, handheld windmills, an animal petting zoo, a children’s activities tent, and

even some favourite superheroes and princesses entertaining. There are also heavily subsidised activities such as bouncy castles, Pedalmania (brilliantly adapted fun bikes), and lots of games, making the whole day fun and affordable for families.

Entry is just $5 per adult with accompanied children under twelve free.

The purpose of the fete is to raise funds towards a much needed extra playground for the growing school of active children. It’s anticipated that the total cost of the playground is likely to be in excess of $100,000 and organisers hope that the fete will help kick start fundraising for the facility.

The event will be organised and hosted entirely by the school and volunteers, along with the help of some much appreciated sponsors.

The school and the fete organisers look forward to welcoming the community to the event.

In ideal conditions the Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari set off for the fifth time from Christchurch across the Southern Alps to Hokitika. The goal of this biennial charity event is to complete a 252 kilometre ride over the main divide on a small city scooter and raise money for the New Zealand Cancer Society. As in previous years, the event struck a chord with a large number and the 250 registered rider spaces were quickly filled.

After the cold wintry blast that had swept up the country during the week, Saturday morning dawned fine and clear as riders, s uppo rt cre ws an d spectators (around 1,000 at the Park) assembled at the Mike Pero Motorsport Park. Riders included cancer patients, survivors, hospital/care workers and corporate teams, along with many hard core scooter and small motorcycle enthusiasts. They came from all walks of life and numerous locations both in New Zealand and across the Tasman, and ranged in age from young students to

those in their 70's. In keeping with the tradition that has grown around this event many wore fancy dress and the costumes were wide and varied.

The riders’ first stop was ‘The Famous Sheffield Pie Shop’ - a chance for a warm-up and a leg stretch and an opportunity to enjoy one of the hundreds of hot pies dispensed by the Shop.

Fabulous views, snowcovered Alps, sweeping vistas and a challenging Porters Pass climb followed. There were few mishaps, the odd bit of mechanical intervention and the necessity for a bit of ‘pushing’ on occasion, but still after eight hours on the road two hundred plus riders made it into Hokitika.

Prizes were awarded for such things as Best Dressed Rider and Team, Best Presented Scooter, Oldest Scooter to make it, Most Uncomfortable Ride and Hard Luck Story - but the best result is the total of more than $750,000 that has been raised to date for the Cancer Society.

The West Melton Bowling Club’s opening day last weekend attracted a good turnout regardless of the cooler weather. This included twelve new, prospective players, many of whom signed up on the day.

Club President Mary Burke declared the season open in a short ceremony and those present remembered members who had recently passed away (Peter Peter Cocks and Kevin Schwass).

Then the early Schwass season success of the Club’s Ladies and Men’s fours teams, who won the Mary McCartney Trophy at the Malvern Centre opening on September 17th, was celebrated.

The jack was rolled up by Peter Bickley and a very good opening bowl delivered by Ian McKinley, McKinley before 56 players took the rinks to play two short opening games of fours.

Meanwhile others took advantage in the warmth of the Club house.

At the cup of a tea after play a Special Meeting was held at which members resolved that the Club would support and contribute to the West Melton Community Centre project. With a successful opening day behind them players now launch into Club, Malvern and Town interclub competitions within the next fortnight.
