July 3rd to 5th saw four swimmers from the Small Strokes (Weedons) Synchro Club compete in Auckland at the North Island Championships.

Needless to say - the Swim School was delighted with their success.

Alessandra Ward and La ure n Small, the Small Aquanaut Duet gained a Silver Medal with their second place, while Kaitlyn Allison received a third placing in her Figure section. Samantha Asher achieved a second in her Figure section, along with a sixth in her Solo section.

Seven Clubs competed at the event and all sections contained large numbers of competitors.

For swimmers who can swim fifty metres and are interested in Synchronised Swimming Small Strokes would love to make contact (must be aged between seven and twelve years old).

Rolleston Road Crash Team have excelled again! The team recently attended the 2016 Australasian Rescue Challenge which was held at Lardner park, Warrugul (one hour east of Melbourne) and collected an impressive third place in the Entrapped class.

Rangiora picked up third in the Controlled section, and not only did Geraldine place second in Time Critical and Entrapped, they also won Best Team Leader and First Place Overall!

Paige Benson, Sammi Tomes, Isaac Martin, Leo Templeman were just some of the children having a great time making dog-shaped biscuits for the Blind Foundation puppy training school.

Selwyn Kids Kindergarten in Rolleston have been busy for the past month giving back to the community. Staff and children began by looking at ways they would like to give back and it was decided that holding a fundraiser for another organisation would be a great start. The Kindergarten chose to be a part of the Blind Foundation Puppy Day, where the children from the Kindergarten, together with the Selwyn Kids Homebase and OSCAR services, all helped to bake and sell puppy shaped biscuits. The proceeds from

this to go toward the Blind Foundation puppy training school.

“The children really enjoyed being able to give back to the local community and had fun doing it! It was also great for them to learn about the valuable service that guide dogs provide,” said Victoria Tomes, Tomes a Head Teacher at the Kindergarten.

After a busy week taking orders and baking over 500 biscuits, their outstanding efforts managed to raise $ 5 2 2 f or t he B l i n d Foundation. What a great effort!

Friday, July 8th saw the Bayliss Lounge in the Lincoln Event Centre transformed into a thriving space for budding musicians. The open mic night, organised by Kusal Ekanayake, a member of the Selwyn Youth Council, was a huge success and saw nine different acts showcase their talents throughout the evening.

The event came about after members of the 2016 Selwyn Youth Council were encouraged to construct and organise a youth centric event based around a personal passion. “One of my major passions is music, so it made sense to organise a music based event. With the help of the Ministry of the Mind Music (in particular, my mentor Duncan Sole) and the support of the Selwyn Youth Council, we were able to bring together the equipment, venue and youth to run this first ever Selwyn Youth Open Mic night locally,” enthused organiser, Kusal. The night saw a mix of bands all consisting of local youth, under the age of 24 and ranging from slam poetry through to incredible jazz.

During August, local libraries are hosting a series of free computer training sessions and a fun reading challenge for kids.

Selwyn Libraries are part of a reading challenge supported

by Hell Pizza and the New Zealand Book Awards. The challenge is open to children in years 1-8 and starts from Monday, August 1st. To take part in the challenge, children pick up a ‘pizza wheel’ handout at a local library, read and review (in person at a library) seven books by September 23rd. Children need to have each segment validated by library staff. Once the wheel is complete, children can get their wheel validated at their local library and present this by December 4th at any Hell Pizza to receive a free 333 healthy pizza.

Free Stepping UP computer training sessions also run

during August and cover five topics with a focus on using technology for employment opportunities or to connect to others. Sessions will introduce people to computer basics, how to find a job online, how to use Skype, Trade Me and social media.

Sessions start from Thursday, August 4th at Darfield, Lincoln and Leeston Libraries and from August 15th at Rolleston with both daytime and evening session options. The sessions are provided by the Council in partnership with 2020 Trust, a registered charity, which works with public libraries in New Zealand to offer introductory computer training. Currently 35 library networks deliver services with the 2020 Trust.

Darfield and Leeston Libraries have been hosting Stepping UP sessions between May and July, which have been popular with customers.

“We are very pleased that our partnership with the 2020 Trust means Selwyn Libraries can now offer sessions in Rolleston and Lincoln and expand the range of topics the sessions cover to help people build their technology skills and use these to apply for jobs, connect with others or access services online,” commented Vicki Carlyon, Carlyon Selwyn Libraries Manager.

The sessions are open to anyone aged thirteen and over but prior registration is required.

The Council met on Wednesday, July 13th and made the following decisions: Land sale for new fire station approved: The Council has confirmed the sale of a 3,400 square metre site on Kidman Street, Rolleston, to the New Zealand Fire Service. The Fire Service intends to develop a new fire station on the site, which is adjacent to the new St John Ambulance facility, in the next three to five years. The sale price of $910,000 was agreed by the two parties through a joint market valuation process. The site currently includes a storage shed which is used by the Council, and the Fire Service has agreed to lease this back to the Council at no cost until it is ready to begin construction of the new station.

Dunsandel Community Centre construction set to start:

Park. Sicon has been operating the plant since it opened in 2006, and its new contract will continue until 2022. Sicon has also been reappointed to manage the Council’s Water Services Network, which incorporates the operations and maintenance of all water services assets. Both appointments were made following comprehensive service reviews and contract negotiations.

Footpath work advanced: The Council received confirmation that funding to accelerate footpath extensions has been secured. As signalled in the recent Annual Plan, this work will be funded from savings and increased income.

Council’s contracting company Sicon has advised the Council of an additional dividend of $600,000 this year, in addition to an initial $2 million dividend already signalled, securing the funding for the footpath extension programme.

Construction of the new Submission on urban Dun san del Community development policy: Centre is expected to start The Council has called for next month. The Council has appointed Arrow International as the lead contractor for the construction of the project, which has a total cost of $3.3 million. Funding for the project is from a variety of sources including grants, insurance, reserve funds, development contributions and a loan to be funded by a targeted rate. Community fundraising has also been a major contributor to the funding.

Council company retains Resource Recovery Park and water contracts: The Council has confirmed that contracting company, Sicon Ltd, has been reappointed to operate the Pines Resource Recovery

changes to the proposed National Policy Statement on Urban Development Capacity (NPS), which the Ministries of the Environment and Business, Innovation and Employment have prepared to provide guidance on urban development. A submission from the Council raises concerns over aspects of the policies and the direction of proposed NPS, including the need to recognise existing spatial growth plans such as the Greater Christchurch Urban Development Strategy, to ensure growth areas are managed in an integrated way.

Rural fire officers appointed: Seven new Rural Fire Officers have been appointed to manage volunteer rural fire forces in Selwyn District.

After recently completing training, Kelvin Green, Green Nigel Birse and John Hinchcliff have been appointed at West Melton, Edward Dance at Darfield, and Robbie Lambie, Lambie Bryan Smith and Kyle Steans have been appointed into district-wide roles.

So much emphasis gets placed on interest rates when inves ng or borrowing, and it would be a fair comment that in today’s low interest climate, property looks a much beAer investment than banks. Take a $400k property rented out at $450 per week. This would give you a gross rental yield of 5.8% against 3.55% being one of the beAer rates on the market offered by Rabo Bank. Even factoring in a property manager at 8% would s ll give you 5.3% before expenses such as insurance and rates etc. You would, however, need to consider the downsides, such as liquidity. It may take more me to free up your capital; and the rules are constantly changing regarding tax implica ons.

On the flip side, if you are looking to fix your mortgage and stressing over the ‘now or wait’ scenario, consider this: Interest payments on $400,000 over one year at 4.5% equate to $18000 or $346 per week. At 4.10% you would be looking at $16400 or $315 per week. Not a whole lot of difference to stress about and on a $300,000 mortgage you are only talking a difference of $23 per week. In this low interest environment it is hard to get it too wrong, but always talk to your adviser to get good independent advice.

Recently pupils of the Burnham branch of Take Control Limited, Karate Club had their technical gradings. Junior gradings take place over a two week time frame with the technical part an opportunity for students to exhibit their technical skills and specific formal moves they need for the move up to the next grade. On Monday, July 5th Burnham karate pupils were tested for the physical part of their grading, covering their fitness, fighting and pushups. This saw them doing thirty minutes of non stop exercise, followed by some strength challenges, before fighting fifteen or so seniors in a mixture of fun but challenging sparring and finally they finish with one hundred push ups!

After the presentation of the certificates Hayden Wilmott of Take Control Limited and Head Instructor Canterbury-Buller Goju Ryu Karate Federation handed out a big trophy to the most improved Karataka with their name engraved on it. The recipient gets to retain this for six months, until the next grading takes place. At this grading Burnham’s Sophie Parker, who moved up to a

yellow belt, was the deserved recipient of the trophy.

At Take Control’s Darfield classes, the same grading in technical took place on June 27th while July 4th saw pupils undertake their physical test.

“There are 54 youngsters at the Darfield class,” Hayden commented, “and 38 at Burnham. Our Burnham premises (the Community Centre) have become too small and so at the start of term three we will relocate to the new West Rolleston School Hall. This will allow the class to grow - as it currently has a waiting list to join.”

“On Saturday, July 2nd, we held grading for seniors, from all my

different Clubs,” Hayden added, and that was held in Darfield, as well. Fifteen seniors were put through their paces for five hours; and they were all extremely impressive!”

July 2nd also saw 35 of Hayden’s students depart to Okinawa, the home of karate, to train at the headquarters of their style Goju Ryu - this is called the Jundokan.

“We will be training with some masters of Karate, 9th and 10th level black belts for ten days,” Hayden said. “These are some of the best and most well respected, traditional, Karate instructors in the world,” he finished.

Rolleston Indoor Bowling Club invite both competitive and non competitive bowlers to attend th eir fu n, f or thc om ing, fundraising tournament. To be held on September 24th, the event has been organised as a friendly, social evening to raise money for the support of Rolleston St John.

While a team of four can be made up of all non-competition

players, it may only contain a maximum of two competition players, ensuring the evening is enjoyable for all.

There will be three practise mats available prior to the tournament for non-competition players to brush up on their skills and have a quick practise before the main event.

Some fabulous tournament prizes will be on offer and an on

-site raffle available to double players chances of receiving a prize on the night.

“Our main aim is to provide a fun and relaxed evening at the Rolleston Stadium while raising money for a great cause,” commented Walter Town, Town a Rolleston Indoor Bowling Club spokesperson.

“Other areas in need of attention are the condition of our rural roads and essential

“Council needs to be open and accountable, provide leadership and strong clear governance. None of these things are achieved without stable, strong, leadership.

“I believe that with my extensive business and community leadership roles I am in a position to offer this to Selwyn and I seek your support in running for the mayoralty,” Pat concluded.

Held on the first weekend in August (6th and 7th) the Methven Craft Fair is Methven Playcentre’s major, annual fundraiser. The event, which the Playcentre have run for six years, takes place in the town’s Mt Hutt Memorial Hall beginning at 10am and running until 4pm.

Prior to the Playcentre’s involvement with the successful Craft Fair the Methven Pottery Club had been the organisers of the event.

A huge advantage of running a winter-time event such as this, is that this one is held indoors, so is not weather dependent.

The Craft Fair has long been an attraction for skiers, holiday makers and locals, with many people from out of town coming to Methven especially for the event. This year organisers have attracted thirty seven stallholders, ranging from women’s and children’s clothing to garden art, along with hair clips/ties, candles, soap, sweets, furniture, cards,

Approaching the mid-point of round three at Selwyn Netball Centre (SNC), Rolleston Netball Club teams/players are continuing to enjoy some tough challenges and some great successes. After the completion of the second round the Club have three teams in first place, two at second and four in third.

A number of players competed for Selwyn teams at various representative netball tournaments (by age group) over the school holidays, with some fantastic competition and experiences had by the girls. We are looking forward to some more great competition in the third round!

Also, during the second round SNC was lucky enough to have some of the Tactix players come down one Saturday. Our Year 5/6 teams; the Ravens, really enjoyed warming up with Bailey Mes. Mes

Methven Playcentre currently has thirty five children from twenty four families on their roll, and operate sessions Monday to Thursday, from 9am until 11:30am. The proceeds of the Methven Craft Fair will go toward their general running costs and may assist with everything from the cost of electricity to purchasing fun, new things for the children to play with.

“The funds raised at the Craft Fair go a long way to providing

what our Centre needs to raise in the year,” said a member of the organising committee, “so it is a very important event for us.

“Do, come and join us, have a sausage off the barbecue, while checking out the great raffles and getting some early Christmas shopping done,” they added.

On Wednesday, July 27th, local MP Amy Adams hosted a Rolleston Business Networking Event which was held at Izone Cafe in Rolleston.

The event was a successful evening with over thirty local business people in attendance. “The feedback I received from those attending was very positive so I will be looking to host more of these events in the future," Amy commented.

There I was si ng at the bar, staring at my drink when a large, trouble-making biker steps up next to me, grabs my drink and gulps it down in one swig.
