April 15-16th, saw the Rolleston Road Crash Team (RRCT) secure overall first place at the UFBA South Island Road Crash Rescue (RCR) Challenge.

The gruelling rescue challenge took place in Milton, Otago and tested the teams to their limits mentally and physically.

Seven teams from around the South Island attended the competition which is run by the United Fire Brigades Association.

There are three categories of scenarios: • Controlled: involves two patients requiring extrication.

• Entrapped: involves one patient trapped by a limb, requiring extrication.

• Time Critical: involves one patient in a critical condition, requiring extrication. Status could deteriorate at any moment.

All of the above scenarios have a time limit of thirty minutes for completion. Teams are judged on skills, communication, medical, and extrication of

by Amanda Anthony in 2014.

Feeling a disconnection from her social life after the earthquakes Amanda made it her mission to empower people in a fun and creative way.

Paint. Sip. Party. Socialise - is the slogan and it certainly sums up an evening at the studio.

The News was invited to experience the Paint ‘n’ Sip concept and after the initial trepidation, excitement won over.

The Darfield group attending were surprised at the light, modern surroundings and enjoyed viewing the hung artworks without intimidation.

The group enjoyed a friendly welcome, and could partake of a drink on arrival, before donning an apron and taking a seat in front of their canvas.

While some of those attending (including some from the Darfield contingent) were experienced artists, others were total novices.

The evening’s artist host set the ball rolling with basic, helpful instructions and information.

This included a pertinent directive not to confuse wine glass with painting water needless to say there was a painter or two imbibing blue or orange bubbly!

The instructions were clear and concise and even the most anxious of budding artists managed to produce a near masterpiece with aplomb.

It was an evening of sipping, painting, laughing and there was even singing at one point!

Van Morrison’s Brown eyed girl or Dexy’s Midnight Runners Come on Eileen were just a couple of the well-known tracks blasted out inbetween instructions and enhancing the

already convivial atmosphere.

The Paint ‘n’ Sip host and artist spent their spare moments offering tips, tricks, advice and anecdotes to the enthusiastic painters.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I created something that I would never have done of my own accord,” commented News staff member Nicki Rolleston.

Rolleston “I would have no idea how to start a project like this and found the idea of providing materials, instruction, wine and music - absolute genius!”

“We’re all keen to go again - it would be wonderful experience with a child or a partner too,” Nicki commented.

My masterpiece is currently being prepared for hanging on my teenager’s wall. For many years I had to endure her artwork all around the house, car, windows etc, so it’s only fair that I give her mine!”

Claire, Kate and Richard Washington are the dedicated new owners of Swimsense Swim School in West Melton.

Claire and Richard Washington are delighted to be the new owner/operators of Swimsense (formerly Small Strokes) Swim School based in Weedons. The Washington family had been thinking about moving into the Selwyn area for some time, when the opportunity of a lifetime arose with the chance to purchase the Weedons swim school.

“The timing was spot on, like it was meant to be. A swim school had always been a particular dream of Claire’s with her swimming and education background. It’s perfect,” enthused Richard.

In fact, Claire and Richard both have complementary teaching backgrounds to the business with Richard a qualified Physical Education (P.E) teacher and Assistant Principal at a Christchurch High School, and Claire also a qualified P.E teacher, health teacher and counsellor.

“We both value the importance

of learning to swim as a vital physical skill, but also the more recent research on the effect of brain development shows the rewards are far-reaching.

Learning to swim utilises many parts of the sensory brain such as touch, sound, sight, smell and taste. For example, one particular benefit for babies is the development of the respiratory system which, can in turn help to develop language,” Claire explained.

A lot of research has gone into the couple’s new venture and their already vast experience in this area of teaching is clearly evident. Claire has previously been a swimming teacher in Christchurch and Hong Kong, as well as being a competitive swimmer herself for several years, which included competing in an Ironman long distance swimming event.

It is because of this wealth of knowledge and experience that the School can confidently offer a specified, individual approach

to learning how to swim and offer private lessons (1-2 max swimmers/teacher) for schoolaged children and adults.

Swimsense also offer a comprehensive pre-school programme and have begun to develop this further with more classes being added as required.

Parents can enjoy the flexibility of having siblings share lessons, while attending a swim school which caters to all ages and abilities in one place. “The Swim School had been running for fifteen years prior to our ownership. We aim to build on, and enhance, the outstanding reputation of quality swim lessons, in a small, familyfriendly environment. Usually a happy and bubbly person, well-adjusted and coping, Mary* had sunk into the clutches of depression as she struggled with the heavy workload of study and trying to juggle family life. Mary was doing a Master’s Degree in Fa mi ly Psycho logy a nd Counselling at the time, when a friend at her course mentioned that there was an eight week Depression and Anxiety Recovery course just starting.

She discussed with her husband Adrian*, Adrian* an ENT surgeon and Epidemiologist, who suggested that she give the course a try to see if it would help. Mary readily signed up even though she was a week behind by then and lost no time in putting into practise the lifestyle treatments being advocated.

“You’ll get out of this, what you put into it”, was the catch phrase repeated every night by course Director Katie Snyder of Darfield. Mary certainly put her all into the programme! She didn’t just apply all the course requirements herself, she took them home to her husband and six year old daughter announcing to them that they would all be doing the course, along with her, at home. The family never stopped applying daily the right nutrition for the brain, exercise, listening to classical music, addressing their thought patterns and negative thinking and many other things she learned on the course.

That particular class had an average 75% reduction in depression overall. (A test marker is taken at the beginning and end to determine levels of depression and anxiety and EQ [a measure of health status]).

The result was Dr Neil Nedley’s Mental Health Education Course, Depression and Anxiety Recovery. It has been reviewed in over forty medical journals, piloted in the US and comes to this area through local facilitators, Katie Snyder, Kerry Gosset and Anna and Paul Schoolderman, Schoolderman all of whom are passionate about helping others to a better quality of life.

Dr Nedley also runs a ten day Intensive Residential Depression and Anxiety course at Weimar in the US which Kerry and Katie were privileged to have recently participated in at his invitation. Nobody needs to go through stressful times alone and Bellyful volunte ers understand that having a new baby, or a sick family member, can make life really tough.

Having a Bellyful volunteer pop around with a couple of cooked meals is a gesture that can go a long way towards alleviating some of the daily parental stress.

As an organisation, Bellyful continue to feed local families based on the appreciation and understanding of the following points: • It’s more than okay to ask for and accept help - in fact it’s really brave.

Lasagne is just one of the delicious meals that Bellyful volunteers cook up for Selwyn families.

• It’s important to acknowledge that parenting a new-born can be really hard.

• Well supported families are less likely to struggle during times of stress.

• New parents don’t need another source of advice.

• A community needs to look after each other.

• Food brings people together.

Bellyful’s main criteria is simply that the families which they provide practical support to, do not have others available to cook and deliver free meals. The family must also fall into one of these categories: • Have a new baby (generally under three months old - but this is not set in stone).

• Have a young family and someone in that family unit has a serious or terminal illness.

There is no catch, or payment involved. Bellyful volunteers cook together about once a month at a ‘cookathon’ and deliver the home-made meals directly to qualifying families.

With the increase of the Selwyn population over the last four years, Bellyful made the decision to open a Selwyn branch to take some pressure off the extremely busy Christchurch branch. There are Bellyful volunteers all over the district, in West Melton, Rolleston, Lincoln, Irwell, Leeston and Southbridge. The

Selwyn volunteers have also been busy for the past few months fundraising to be a fully established branch. This has been a hugely successful effort on their part due to the generosity of the local community.

Yuck, even for a professional these guys can make the hair stand up on the back of your neck.

There are several na ve wasps in New Zealand which cause very liKle problem. Our concern is the German wasp and the common wasp, both of which look very similar. The worst is the German wasp, which was accidentally introduced in the 1940’s. Their nests are usually about the size of a soccer ball, but the biggest recorded in New Zealand was 3.7 metres high by 1.75 metres across; this was in the Auckland area. They have no predators in our country so have become prolific.

These wasps are destroying na ve birds and insects in the beech forests by drinking the honey dew (found on beech trees) that our na ve species rely on for survival.

In New Zealand’s na ve beech forests, it’s not unusual for there to be 10,000 wasps opera ng per square hectare.

The worker wasps’ job is to take food back to the nest to feed the grubs and the queen. This can be honey dew, insects they kill, meat from road kill, and also fruit and fish. That is where we humans clash - fruit trees in our back yards, rubbish bins and food. We all know what happens when we are trying to gut and fillet fish on holiday. Wasps travel about 200 metres from their nest, and once they find a food source a great number can turn up to collect it, and return it to this nest.

Wasps Nests need to be treated correctly for a good kill. If you are not confident to do this, call a professional, and avoid being stung!

Canterbury charitable trust Community Energy Action (CEA) have been nominated as a finalist in this year’s prestigious 14th EECA (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority) awards, in the community category. The two yearly awards recognise organisations that go beyond the call of duty in the field of energy efficiency, celebrating energy excellence with some of New Zealand's most innovative businesses. In 2015 CEA assisted over 7,500 people with advice, grants and practical help towards more energy efficient homes.

“CEA has worked on improving energy efficiency in Canterbury homes for the last 22 years,” said Caroline Shone, Chief Executive of CEA. “The last two years have seen the Trust diversify in the way it works, adapting to the changing needs of the community. This has resulted in a much more effective way to help make homes more energy efficient, warmer and drier with healthier occupants.”

Collaboration with like-minded and community orientated organisations has been beneficial for all involved and especially for Canterbury people living in cold homes.

Norman Osborne from Rolleston is just one of the people that CEA have been able to assist with improving their lifestyle.

“One of the local papers had an article about CEA and cold houses and people not taking advantage of the insulation subsidies,” said Norman. “So I rang up to find out whether I would qualify,” he explained.

As he was over 65 and also met some other criteria, Norman was pleased to find that he qualified for free insulation.

After CEA’s assessment, they organised to top up the old ceiling insulation and replace the old foil under the floor with polyester insulation. “I was a builder and with lots of the houses built in the 60’s and 70’s, the insulation is not very good. It doesn’t do its job.

Definitely get the insulation. Do not hesitate - it’s well worth it! I recommend it to anyone,” Norman enthused about the

initiative.

Mike Underhill, EECA’s Chief Executive, commented that this year’s finalists are all trailblazers in their efforts to find innovative solutions that tackle energy use head on. “All our finalists are leading by example and their inspiring stories will influence a wider commitment to energy efficiency across New Zealand society.”

CEA also operates a Curtain Bank that recycles donated curtains and a free, independent Energy Advice Service. Its insulation service installs insulation for all incomes with surpluses from unsubsidised services going towards its community projects.

Nominations are now open for the Sensational Selwyn Awards 2016.

The awards, organised by Selwyn District Council, are held every two years. They recognise and honour outstanding Selwyn individuals, community groups and businesses, for their inspirational work and achievements.

Nominations can be made in nine categories: Agri-business; Arts and Culture; Community Services; Environmental; Large Business; Small Business; Sport; Tourism; Young Achiever.

In 2014, 61 nominations were received for the Sensational Selwyn Awards. The award

winners that year were: South Island Agricultural Field Days, Adrienne Begg, Quickenberry Guesthouse, Eliza Grigg, Josh Bashford, Bashford Southern Woods Tree Nursery, Fonterra Darfield, Rosa Flanagan and Phil Garrett and family.

At the 2014 awards over 300 people attended the awards dinner. The 2016 Awards will be presented in Lincoln in July.

“This is an opportunity for people to think about who they would like to see recognised through the awards,” said Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe. Coe “We have fantastic talents in Selwyn and these awards are presented to individuals, organisations and businesses in

Selwyn to honour and celebrate outstanding work, or inspirational achievements. With nine categories there is an opportunity for everyone to be involved in celebrating success in Selwyn,” he said.

The awards are open to individuals and organisations who live, or are based, in Selwyn district and meet the criteria for entry listed on nominations forms. 2014 award winners are not eligible to enter the same category in 2016.

Award nominees must give permission to be entered on the entry form.

Rolleston achieved an impressive: 1st Team Leader 2nd Team Medic 1st Technical (which is based on the skill of the guys on tools, how they approach the extrication and deal with any problems).

Rolleston RCR’s fantastic results saw them place first overall in the competition, with Geraldine and Rangiora taking second and third places respectively.

The Otago/Southland regionals were also held concurrently within the competition and the host team, Milton, won this.

There has been a Rolleston RCR team since 2009. However, there has been a roll over of

team members with John Trounson (Team Leader) and Marty Tier (Tools) being the only two members remaining from the original team.

The Rolleston team have certainly built a reputation as a force to be reckoned with.

Between 2009-2016 the RRCT have won the Regional Championships, South Island Champs (twice) and also National Championships. They have also represented New Zealand at the Australasian RCR Championships four times (three New Zealand teams are sent each year).

Competitions are an invaluable experience to the teams; the skills that they learn and

develop are taken back to the local Brigades and passed on to other members, as well as used at actual rescue situations on the area’s local roads.

There were bouncy castles to suit every age at Rolleston Community Centre at the recent Fun Day. Rolleston town was buzzing with the sound of excited children on Sunday, April 17th. Bouncy castle fun day is an event which is hosted by Around-ABounce bouncy castle hire Ltd at Rolleston Community Centre. This was an excellent way for the younger popula on of Rolleston to kick-start the school holidays.

“This event has doubled in size from the first event that we held in 2015 which had 500 people aKend.

This year we had over 1,000 aKendees and we plan to make it even bigger next me around in July!” declared owner/operator, Mark Jackson excitedly.

The event was established to enable children to have the maximum amount of fun at an affordable price for caregivers. It’s something that Mark and the team at Around-A-Bounce give back to the community in thanks for their support during the summer months.

The event is also a profitable plaUorm for local fundraising groups with Rolleston Playcentre coordina ng the bake sale this year.

“We would like to thank all the local groups and business and everyone that came along to make the Bouncy Castle Fun Day the great event it is today,” Mark concluded.

Lolytwist was kept busy and enthralled the crowds with her amazing balloon creations.

West Melton school (WMS) sent a small team of students recently to the Lincoln Zone Duathlon. The Duathlon was held at Motukarara Raceway on April 11th and saw over twenty primary schools competing for placings at the event.

The students were required to run, bike and then run again the distances were dependent on age group. For many WMS students, this was their first time participating in an event such as this and they embraced the challenge. “It was great to see them encourage each other, showing great sportsmanship and resilience!

Our team also provided a lot of extra marshalls, helping with putting bikes away and cone collection at the end. An amazing effort,” commented a delighted WMS spokesperson, Rita Spadoni.

Spadoni Isla Mc. (pictured above right) came an impressive second in the ten year old girls category (run 2km, bike 6km, run1km) Jed Mc. (pictured right) came third in the eleven year old boy category (run 2km, bike 6km, run 1km).

Springfield based artist, Vicky Peacock is well-known locally and nationally for her magnificent art works. However, it is not only her talent as an artist that has made her so popular throughout New Zeala nd; but a lso her contagious enthusiasm for promoting and teaching art.

Recently Vicky has been involved in designing and painting several murals for local schools. One of which, is Broadfi el d Schoo l ne ar Rolleston. The mural allows children to be a part of the process of translating their school’s values into a coherent work of art.

As well as being an artist, Vicky is a qualified primary school teacher who thrives on using these strengths to encourage and promote art in the local community. A true believer that educat ion and cr eat ive expression are crucial elements in child development, Vicky has recently begun offering art lessons. She has her work cut

out, as she also tutors children’s gymnastics, teaches at a Darfield pre-school, creates commission works and has two busy daughters under the age of six!

accessing the wealth of online education tools available to support modern learning, and families can make the most of the new proliferation of online entertainment,” Steve added.

“It’s exciting to see Rolleston at the forefront of fibre broadband uptake,” Mayor Coe said.

“Access to fast, reliable communication is a huge advan tag e for scho ol s, businesses and households alike.”

“The UFB build is now complete in sixteen towns and cities. The first stage of the initiative will enable at least 75 per cent of New Zealanders to access fibre to the premise by 2019, with a second phase expanding reach by at least a further five percent,” Amy concluded.

Round one of the 2016 SNC Netball competition at Lincoln is well under way with most teams having played two games and the Premier 1 and 2 grades having played three.

There have been some close fought games with some narrow losses and some great wins.
