Local West Melton woman Helen Coker, has been named the 2015 Gardena Garden of the Year competition winner. Helen was one of five finalists in the competition and she is delighted to have triumphed over some tough competition, "When we saw the other nominees I thought they were really strong and it's such an honour to win," Helen said. Helen was nominated by her husband, Brian Coker who lost both legs in the February earthquake after being crushed under the PGG building in Christchurch. Brian wrote in to nominate his wife for the prestigious competition to show appreciation for her tireless efforts in the creation of their dream garden at their new home in West Melton. The couple relocated from their Christchurch home as it was no longer suitable for easy wheelchair access. Helen gave up her career as a nurse to support Brian through his rehabilitation, and now volunteers as a clerk at the

It's been a learning curve year for the owners of the News with confirmation that communication can bridge most obstacles - but that all parties need to partake! 2016 will be a year of changes for the News (and our Darfi eld business neighbours - Gnomes Alpine Sports) as we embark on the biggest change to our operations since each party took on their businesses. Watch this space for developments. It's always a good time to thank our advertisers, but none more so than now. We are so appreciative of your continued support, because without it there would be no local ‘News’ in the mailbox and we cannot thank you enough. We are also indebted to the contributors of sports results, jokes, letters, news snippets and photographs -
the ’News’ just couldn’t be the same with your content. The Rolleston and Malvern News is of course, as you no doubt already knew, the only newspaper in the area owned by Selwyn locals. Locals who live locally, work locally and have the local community at heart. The whole process from newspaper production to the printing of it, is completed onsite and is something we're inherently proud of. We love hearing all the successes (and a few failures!) of those around us and enjoy being able to bring them to you. We're human, which means we can get it wrong, but we always try to do our very, very, best and sincerely hope we can continue to do so. Christmas is a time for friends and families, but we are aware not everyone has them
around them, for whatever reason. The News team does sincerely hope, that however our readers are spending the Christmas season, it's relaxing, enjoyable and a helluva lot of fun! It’s the only time of the year our hardworking team can rest and recuperate and so this will be our last issue for 2015 and we’ll be back on deck - this time on the first Wednesday of each month (we’re currently at the end of each month). This means our first issue will be published on February 3rd, 2016. We wish you all the very best and look forward to providing News again next year. Take care, keep safe and look after you and yours ☺

Clearview trampolining superstars (pictured right) are proudly holding their trophies for winning first place overall in their separate grades. All three achieved outstanding results and won both the trampoline and double mini trampoline grades for the badge level they compete in. The competition is split into three parts which are held throughout the year in Christchurch and include competitors from all over the South Island. Congratulations on a great effort.
Current owner of Darfield Hair Boutique, Emma Millar, Millar is packing away her scissors and comb in the new year to venture into the exciting world of par enth ood. Emma and husband Reg are expecting their first bundle of joy to arrive in February. In the meantime Emma is busy preparing and welcoming new owners to the Boutique, during the busy lead up to Christmas. Emma is absolutely delighted to introduce new owners; motherdaughter duo, Bronwen and Phoebe Seaward. Seaward Emma is especially excited to be mentoring the talented young Phoebe. Phoebe attended both Darfield Primary and Darfield High School and will be a familiar face to many in the district. More recently she has been following her hair-styling dreams in Rolleston, completing her first two years of an apprenticeship with flying colours and even being encouraged by her tutor to enter the prestigious HITO NZ Apprentice of the year Awards. Bronwen will also be a familiar face to many as she has worked

as a teacher at Darfield High School for the past eight years and taught numerous local children. When the opportunity to purchase the Darfield Hair Boutique came up, both mother and daughter decided to seize it with both hands. “It’s something we have always wanted to do together. Once we had met Emma, we knew we wanted the salon, she is just the kind of mentor Phoebe needs,” said Bronwen excitedly. Equally as enthusiastic as her mother, Phoebe is really looking forward to meeting all of the Boutique’s clients. “I can’t wait to meet all Emma’s regulars and continue the same high level of service they have all come to know and love. I am excited to bring everything I have learnt, back home to Darfield clients,” Phoebe said with a big smile. Together with welcoming the new owners of Darfield Hair Boutique, Emma would like to farewell her loyal and valued clients. “I feel so confident that all my clients will be very happy with Phoebe, her colour-work is

Three years ago, under the banner of his company goHarness, Noel Kennard launched the concept of horse syndication that only required a ‘one off’ payment to race a pacer, for a two-year period. Noel reports that the response from the readers of the News’ two publications was fantastic. Despite a promising start, the syndicate’s original horse, Franco Harrison developed his fair share of issues during that time. However, he still managed to record three wins and eight placings for the ‘In It For Fun’ Syndicate, before he was sold on when their time was up. So ‘Harry’, as he was affectionately known, didn’t exactly set the world on fire, but he certainly gave his syndicate members loads of fun - which was the whole point of the concept, in the first place. Noel duplicated the same idea fifteen months later with another syndicate, this time buying two pacers. With more than eight months still remaining before the ‘Double The Fun’ Syndicate finishes, they have enjoyed even more success. One of their horses (Astro Boy) has racked up five wins and ten placings, while the other (Western Art) has won on four occasions and been placed six times. Planning is already underway to launch other syndicates of a similar nature, some time early in 2016. Keeping with the horse theme, Noel recently brought another
innovative and novel product to New Zealand with News’ readers being some of the first to find out about it… THE PONY EXPRESS “These are ride-on ponies, powered in the same way that someone would ride a bicycle,” Noel explained. “This makes them ideal for children’s parties or special events.” The ponies come in three sizes, to cater for the different weights of their users; up to 40kgs, up to 60kgs and up to 90kgs. From the ground up, the saddle heights are 60cms, 70cms and 80cms respectively. They are available for hire from Noel and Wendy Kennard who live in Weedons (on the other side of the State Highway near Rolleston).
Many readers may have already seen them on TV One’s Breakfast Programme when a live report was broadcast from Riccarton Racecourse on the Wednesday of Cup Week. “The ponies work best on firm surfaces like driveways, footpaths or even inside houses,” Noel added. “They can also be used on well-tended lawns; but this location can be a bit more difficult for the very young to operate the ponies on. “They are great for kids, both young and old,” Noel smiled. “So why don’t you treat yourself or give your child/grandchild a special memory and be the hit of the birthday party by providing items that all the guests can enjoy.”
See the advertisement in this issue for the contact details of the Pony Express.

Rolleston Volunteer Fire Brigade Combat Team. L-R: : Pete Savage, Rick Coburn, Sarah Lilley, Bruce Moffat, Carl Dierck, Callen Saunders, Rob Eggers. On Saturday, December 5th firefighters from throughout the South Island converged on Westport for the South Island Firefighter Combat Challenge. Hosted by the Westport Volunteer Fire Brigade, the event is described by many as ‘the toughest two minutes in sport’. The 51 competitors required a huge amount of skill and fitness as they battled through five physically gruelling tasks. The challenge included: • Climbing a six storey tower carrying a length of 70mm, 19kg flaked hose. • Hoisting a 70mm hose coil up six storeys. • Chopping using a 4kg shot hammer to drive a beam 1.5 metres. • Extending a charged length of 45mm hose to knock
down a disc.

a distance of 30.5m. Nigel Lilley, Chief Fire Officer at Rolleston Volunteer Fire Brigade, was amazed at the level of hospitality extended to them. “Westport were fantastic hosts, working hard to ensure the rain stayed away, that the track was laid out in plenty of time and that everyone was fed and watered. The effort they put into making sure the challenge w en t w ell w as gr eat ly appreciated by all,” he enthused. With a little bit of damp in the air, there were no record breaking times from the Rolleston Brigade and Nigel attributes this, in part, to the new high level of competition. “ Th e r e w er e 2 7 n ew
competitors ranking in the top three of their category showing great levels of fitness and raw determination,” he added. “We were thrilled to see so many new competitors succeed. “All Rolleston competitors finished their chosen discipline on time - which showed a great improvement in everyone’s fitness,” Nigel commented. “There has been a 50% growth in participants at the Combat Challenge and it would appear to be attracting more and more competitors each year,” Nigel observed. This past Christmas, I told my girlfriend that all I wanted was an Xbox. That’s it. Beginning and end of list: Xbox. You know what she got me? A homemade frame with a picture of us from our first date together. Which was fine. Because I got her an Xbox! As a liRle girl climbed onto Santa's lap, Santa asked the usual, "And what would you like for Christmas?" The child stared at him open mouthed and horrified for a minute, then gasped: "Didn't you get my E-mail?"
