Expoz'Art is a pop up gallery which will open its doors to the public on September 16th. The gallery, run by well-known artists Katrina McGettigan and Michelle Green, is located in the heart of Rolleston next to Snap fitness gym.

Michelle has a lifelong love of art and originally started her career as an artist on the West coast.

She has always been inspired by nature, whether it be the hauntingly beautiful forests of the West or the mighty mountains and lakes of the East. Michelle's spiritual connection to nature allows her to capture and focus this mysterious and beautiful energy into all her works of art. In 2012, Michelle felt she was ready to take the next step in her painting career and cast her eyes

east across the great Southern Alps of the South Island into the vast expansive region of Canterbury.

Equally inspired by the Canterbury scenes, Katrina loves to capture the beauty of New Zealand on canvas. Originally from Methven, Katrina is now an established artist living in Christchurch. She has exhibited throughout New Zealand in both joint and solo shows and her work has been sold worldwide. Over the course of her career, Katrina has developed a stronger more refined style by experimenting with a wide range of moods, colours and light to depict many landscape and native bird scenes.

Katrina is currently undertaking the challenging task of painting one hundred native birds in one

hundred days and will have a special launch on day one hundred of the collection. This project has gained popularity landing Katrina a guest appearance on The Daily Fix Christchurch's internet TV Channel. Katrina will be painting onsite in the gallery and offers art tuition for children and adults.

The opportunity arose for the

artists to open the gallery through collaboration with Rolleston Square and The Selwyn Arts Trust.

Rolleston Square is keen to provide opportunities for Rolleston residents, so has collaborated with the artists to provide this space for Michelle and Katrina to live their dream of running a gallery - right in the heart of Rolleston.

Mark Saturday, October 10th on the calendar because it’s the day Harvey World Travel celebrates its arrival into the Selwyn District with their new store, located beside The Warehouse in Rolleston.

The new store is the second to be owned by the Robinsons who purchased the Blenheim store in November last year.

“We started the Harvey World journey with Rolleston in mind,” Sue commented.

“However the lack of available retail space meant we had to tread water for awhile.

Rolleston Square has always been our desired location, but we just had to be patient.

When Blenheim came up, we

jumped at it, and while the travel away from home has been hard, we knew that one day we would get there with Rolleston. Finally that day is coming.”

In Blenheim the Robinsons support local Volunteer Fire Brigades with a portion of each sale going to them, and they plan to do the same in Selwyn.

“We are firm believers in giving back to the community that support us,” Sue stressed.

“There are so many deserving charities, but the Fire Brigade is close to my heart as a volunteer at Kirwee,” Paul commented. “So we are sticking with that and are proud to be able to financially support the seven brigades in Marlborough and eleven in Selwyn.”

October 7th but on the 10th there will be suppliers on hand to showcase their products.

More FM will be in attendance with face painting and colouring in to keep children occupied, freeing up their parents to talk travel. A barbecue will operate between 10am and 2pm.

“October marks UK and Europe on Sale, so it really makes the most sense to open when we know the prices will be really competitive. We have some amazing opening specials, and those, along with our outstanding staff makes us excited to be able to serve our local community. Whether it is business or leisure travel, finally Rolleston has a travel agent,” Sue concluded.

Handmade Jeweller & Craſts Rolleston Community Fundraising Fireworks Night is a much looked forward to event and this year will doubtless be no different. Organisers have a huge night planned for Saturday, November 7th. This annual event is run by a group of volunteers from the Rolleston Residents Association and representatives from many of the wider area’s local non-profit groups and schools. Apart from celebrating the night safely, and to give the community a family fun night, it is also run to help support all these groups. For many, it is one of the largest fundraising, by way of games and stalls, events of their year.

Some would say that this wonderful community night has become a principal event in the Selwyn calendar given how long the event has been going and the large crowd it now attracts.

It has grown so large over the last few years that organisers have liaised with the bus company to provide extra, later buses to get everyone travelling on public transport, home safely.

The Fireworks’ event originally started where the Council building now stands, when all the prunings etc would be pushed into a big bonfire and the local fire brigade would let off everyone’s fireworks. A real community bonfire, with fire crackers and things purchased from the shop. From these small beginnings it is now almost outgrowing its current Reserve location, with thousands of people attending to see the wonderful professional display carried out by Fireworks International.

The concept for the show this year is the continuation of the ‘Mars the Bringer of War’ theme. Through the combination of fireworks and music, the show’s intention is to mark the Canterbury Regiment of Mounted Rifles and a Battalion of Canterbury Infantry who were part of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force to join the British Empire’s war effort. These 8,454 men were the first of an eventual 100,000 New Zealanders who served overseas in WW1 during the

ensuing four years.

This is a community event put on by community volunteers, although appreciated support from Pub Charity and SDC have assisted with some costs, the gate takings are what funds the majority of the ever increasing budget of the event. Needless to say organisers are hoping for a fine, warm and wind free evening to attract the crowds.

“The price has remained unchanged from last year at $5 per person or $10 per family and once inside the gate then everything spent at the community group stalls, goes straight to that group,” said a spokesperson for the organisers. “There’s entertainment throughout the night, as well as fairground rides, including some new attractions, all being finished off by a wonderful fireworks display.

Hopefully the wider Selwyn community will come along and continue supporting this wonderful event.”

Things are moving along nicely at the Rolleston Men’s Shed, with their main building in place and the roof now on the meeting room. The next job is get the walls and cladding on to make the meeting room secure. The power should be on by the time this goes to press and the whole project is looking spectacular.

An additional shipping container is also on site and this will be painted up in the same colours as the main building and provide additional storage space.

The Men’s Shed battery drive has been extremely successful and continues as long as there are batteries in the community.

Contact Neil Bennett (number below) and he will arrange collection. The Men’s Shed members are still doing work in the community and thanks to all the volunteers who lend a hand at a moment’s notice, long may this continue.

Five lucky Selwyn households are now better prepared for an emergency after signing up to the Selwyn Gets Ready website and winning a household emergency ‘grab and go’ kit.

The winners for the Selwyn Gets Ready sign up and win competition are Susan Rogers (Selwyn Huts), Mike and Karen Hennessy (Greendale), Kate Foster (Hororata), Steve Johnson (Kirwee) and Deb and Julian Reynolds (Tai Tapu).

The Selwyn Gets Ready website is a database which contains contact information of local residents. This information is used by local community response teams to identify who needs assistance in an emergency and who has skills or resources (like first aid skills, generators and four wheel drives) that could help in a disaster. In a disaster a netw or k of c om m unity response teams operate in Selwyn with each team responsible for checking on the welfare of their community, identifying what needs to be done in their area, solving local problems if they can and requesting assistance if needed. It is also used to alert

residents in emergencies.

Householder’s information is restricted to their neighbourhood support group coordinators and the local community response team and cannot be viewed by the public.

Selwyn District Council Community Resilience and Emergency Management Coordinator, Sue Jenkins, Jenkins said the competition encouraged new households to join the emergency management and ne i ghbour hood support website. “It’s great to see so many new households sign up.

These households can now receive email or text messages alerting them of an emergency situation that will affect them directly like an uncontrolled fire nearby, a severe weather warning or a boil water notice for their water supply.”

Last week three talented West Melton students participated with pupils from numerous Canterbury schools at the Cultural Festival held at Horncastle Arena in Christchurch. The cultural festival is a unique and colourful stage show that celebrates the many vibrant cultures in both schools and Aotearoa.

The three West Melton students all entered into the wearable arts category and spent a great deal of time and care turning their ideas and drawings into an actuality. Alessandra Ward, Ward Bella Groen and Brooke Muirsmeath all used locally inspired themes for their ensembles. Alessandra and Bella chose the ‘Wild and Wacky’ category with their outfit ‘Girls Take on Farming Career’.

Brooke chose the ‘Iconic Christchurch’ category and created an artistic representation of the rebuild.

After finishing the final tweaks to their outfits, the girls waited patiently backstage on the night of the event to venture into the limelight and share their creative interpretations with an

David Owen, Environment Canterbury Regional Parks Team Leader, said the new facility is being developed in response to demand from local horse-riding enthusiasts.

“With the Selwyn District experiencing significant growth in recent years, there is now even more demand for outdoor ameni es that local people can enjoy.

“We have been working closely with the Selwyn District Council to secure funding and develop a plan for the new area and we’ve met with

The league comprised the six top‐ranked teams of eleven to twelve‐year‐olds from a total of 48 teams throughout Canterbury. This is the first time a boys’ or men’s Selwyn team has won a regional football title, and coach Martin Allen is

justifiably proud. He enthuses about how much he’s enjoyed the season and added: “These boys are the perfect example of what can be achieved with the right attitudes. I am very pleased for the boys that they secured the title, as I know it means a lot to them.”

Martin has a strong coaching philosophy and development policy, and an eye‐catching style of play that he instils in his teams. Most of the Colts have been together for three years playing for Selwyn United, Selwyn Representative, and Selwyn Talent Centre. While Martin is particularly happy with the title win, he admitted: “For me, it’s more about the style in which the team is played, and about the boys realising that playing the beautiful game the way it’s meant to be played, will bring results.”

After an exciting season, all of the squad’s players have been selected to represent the

Selwyn District at the South Island Football Tournament in Blenheim, held early next month.

Four of Martin’s title winning team were also busy with futsal (indoor football) mid‐season, in July. They were selected for the Canterbury team to attend the National Youth Futsal Championships in Wellington and finished a creditable second behind Nelson Futsal.

During the main season, Selwyn Colts scored 38 goals in ten games. This striking goal tally was eighteen more than that achieved by second‐placed Halswell United.

Martin is already planning and looking forwards to next season when the Colts move up from nine‐a‐side to the full eleven‐a‐ side game. He admits with heartfelt humility: “I’m really privileged to see how these boys are continuing to develop both as football players and wonderful young men.”

Weedons School was understandably thrilled to be placed fourth in the second HP Rural Schools Competition, which won them $1,250 worth of HP technology. Weedons entry was one of more than eighty creative video submissions from rural schools across the country.

Their parody video based around Pink Floyd's, 'Another Brick in the Wall' - instead changing the words to 'Ten Chromebooks short of them all'.

To enter, schools were asked to submit an explanation about why th ey n e ed ed n ew technology and how it would benefit the students. Weedons School IT teacher, Patrick Wyatt said, “in our video we wanted to show the student’s point of view; how they’re being distracted when others use technology in the classroom

Future Leader Scholars from the Lend-a-Hand programme based at Lincoln University organised the ‘My Town’ children’s design competition held on September 11th. ‘My Town’ is an exhibition and presentation of the design proposals created by children of local school groups and clubs of the Selwyn District.

The winners then have the chance to transform their ideas into reality.

It was up to the groups to create a proposal to present, Dragons Den style, at the ‘My Town’ event. There was a grand total of $3,800 raised to go toward the three winning groups ideas. The winning ideas were submitted

Clearview’s senior hockey team achieved overall first place in the recent Canterbury Primary Schools Winter Tournament. T he winning year 7/8 team ventured to Hagley Park to compete on August 27th and did remarkably well. They settled into a winning pattern after a draw in the first game, becoming the first Clearview team to win a Canterbury event. Hopefully there will be many more in the future!

West Melton Primary School took advantage of National Math’s Week which ran from August 10th-14th to find new and wonderful ways of encouraging student learning.

The school’s three community teams, Kiwi, Pukeko and Moa, all participated with great enthusiasm.

Math’s Week is a premier mathematics event in the New Zealand school calendar, and sees more than 50,000 students, teachers and parents, from around New Zealand, participating. In its eleventh year of operation, Math’s Week continues to move from strength to strength with the addition of new interactive games and challenges each year. Math’s Week is the

Kiwi team used group knowledge to help them learn to read numbers up to ten. The Pukeko team solved addition

problems with groups of ten using value, and the Moa students learned all about measurement. They used a measuring trundle to record the distance from server to Wireless Access Point, so they could make a cable map for the school.

On August 25th, primary school students from several local schools participated in the Kids for Kids Concert held at the Wigram Airforce Museum. Kids for Kids is a mass choir event held in conjunction with World Vision and this was the 21st year it has been held in New Zealand. A series of twenty two shows are held nationwide giving young students a chance to perform for their community.

The theme this year was

'Slice of Heaven' featuring Jackie Clarke and Nathan King, King along with classic Kiwi songs, enjoyed by young and old.

The Pukeko Team from West Melton School practiced for many months and were incredibl y excit ed t o showcase their singing with an estimated dozen other schools on the Monday night.

In addition, West Melton were fortunate enough to have some students on the front stage in several songs,

giving those children an e sp e ci al l y m em or a bl e evening.

Also taking part were students from Sheffield Primary School, many of whom made ‘a day of it’.

Team Mobico Heart Kids are ready to tackle the World’s most challenging technical adventure race to raise money for Heart Kids Canterbury and New Zealand.

The idea to form Team Mobico Heart Kids and compete in GodZone was conceived two years ago after West Melton team captain Rupert MacLachlan’s son, Mitchell, Mitchell was diagnosed with a hole in his heart at six weeks old. Mitch underwent open heart surgery at Starship hospital when he was just eighteen months old.

Without the incredible help and support from everyone involved at Heart Kids Canterbury and Heart Kids NZ, coping with this stressful time in their lives would have been a lot different for the MacLachlan family.

Every week, twelve babies are born with a heart defect in New Zealand and while there are surgical procedures that can improve the heart's function, there is no cure for a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). Heart Kids NZ is the only charity that

supports Kiwi children and families affected by CHD, right throughout their lives. Rupert found this support invaluable, “They went beyond and above, right from the moment they found out about Mitchell's heart defect, through to now, six months post-surgery.”

Heart Kids NZ receives no government funding and has to fundraise for all its services.

Mobico, a New Zealand owned specialist IT company, is proud to get in behind it and the four wonderful people, plus their families, who are taking on this adventure to raise awareness and much needed funds for Heart Kids NZ. Mobico is sponsoring a team to participate in the April 2016 GodZone, the World’s most technically challenging adventure race. The four member team are all seriously accomplished

endurance athletes. They and their supporters are now keen to help Heart Kids and are hoping to raise $100,000 over the next six months as they train and compete in the April 2016 event.

GodZone is the ultimate expedition, adventure, racing experience. The event sees unsupported teams (meaning they must be self sufficient) travelling approximately 500kms, across New Zealand's wilderness, for up to seven days.

Considered one of the most technically challenging adventure races in the world, teams have limited time to prepare their maps and strategy, before setting out. Teams also face additional challenges (such as orienteering) that are set at an elite level to ensure the event provides a good challenge to both brains and brawn.
