Elliot Wyatt couldn’t wait on Monday, October 25th to meet his mum and dad, who unexpectedly had to deliver him in the car at Rolleston New World, weighing 8lb 11oz.

Mel Wyatt (mum) had attended a midwife appointment earlier in the day, where she had a stretch and sweep, which was supposed to help move things along as she was 40 weeks 5 days. By 3.30pm Mel's waters had broken and contractions had started. Pat Wyatt (dad) called the midwife to let her know contractions had started and she said to let her know when the contractions ramp up.

“I had an app and after four contractions it said to go to the hospital, so I called the midwife and she said to head to Lincoln Maternity Hospital in about thirty minutes unless we feel we need to leave earlier. It soon became clear we needed to leave, so we got in the car, turned two corners and Mel said she needed to push,” Pat explained.

“We pulled into the New World car park and I was yelling out the window to a lady to call the ambulance. Once I parked, I got

Proud parents, Mel and Pat with new son Elliot. out and tried to make Mel more comfortable, hoping we had time for the ambulance to turn up but when I got to her she said she was pushing. I looked down and I could see the head crowning, so I started yelling to get a nurse or doctor from New World.

“Then his head was out and on the next contraction, he was in

my hands. Mel took him from me and from this point a nurse (Emily Bell) was there to help, thank goodness!

“The ambulance turned up, followed by our midwife. It was amazing to see all of the people helping out, making calls, running to get a call over the loud speaker, etc. The staff were

awesome, coming to give us some comfort immediately after.

“Elliot has been super chilled and is awesome and adored by older brother George. Mel did so well and amazingly did not seem phased! Overall, a surreal experience, but one we will obviously never forget!” Pat concluded proudly.

STARTING TO TAKE SHAPE The sounds and sites of the new Rolleston town centre areas are starting to take shape.

The tamariki zone, next to the library and town square, is nearly complete with colourful soft-fall, seating balls and seats now installed.

This outdoor zone will be a fun, colourful, shaded space for children, next to the indoor tamariki area inside Te Ara Ātea and close to the Town Square, community Kai Gardens and Sensory Space.

An outdoor xylophone, speaking tubes and drums were also installed in the Sensory Space, ahead of both areas opening in December.

The Sensory Space is an area designed for all residents regardless of physical ability or

neurodiversity. The area has been designed with support from students and staff at Waitaha School and will feature artwork from nine Selwyn schools, along with local mosaic artists. It will be surrounded by raised gardens and trees with areas designed to cater to each of the senses, including a water feature, musical elements, log seats and a frame over the central path with space to hang art features.

It is an area designed to engage

all the senses, sight, touch, sound, smell and taste.

The choice of plants and their layout has been carefully selected to appeal to the senses through colour, touch, movement and some edible plants for taste. While each tree, rock, seat, wall and path has also been designed and placed to appeal to different senses. Many have been placed to give different sensations as the weather and seasons change.

Level 2 Lockdown has had a minimal effect on the Shed and its projects. As usual, a wide variety of items are being worked on, including a doll’s house being renovated, a garden box with a cover and a cabinet being renovated with recycled bits. Also, a second trailer for the Shed is slowly being built, computers are being upgraded and tuition is given when needed.

The Shed trended towards a musical theme last month, with the repair of a ukulele by a shed member for his grandson and the construction of a drum by another. Ralph Wilkin made the drum from wooden pallets that were basically thrown away as the timber they were constructed of was not of high quality. After the timber was steamed, bent and laminated, it looked fantastic. He also made the drum's skin tensioners.

WHEEL OF IMMUNITY WINNER The Project, which is featured weeknights on Three, wanted to do their bit to help unite against Covid-19 and support New Zealand’s drive to get Aotearoa vaccinated!

They started a campaign to encourage people to get their vaccinations and asked people to send in their happy vaccination selfies. Every night they chose a winner from the received entries and that winner got a spin of the ‘Wheel of Immunity'.

Rolleston local Angel Tansley submitted a selfie of herself and her sister the day they got vaccinated and much to Angel’s surprise, she was contacted the next day by the production team, advising her that she had been selected to spin the wheel that evening. A zoom link was sent and Angel, her Mum (Kathie), Dad (Barney), Sister (Jo) and puppy (Hudson) all joined the zoom meeting for a few

technical checks, before going live at 7:23pm. Jesse Mulligan one of the Presenters on The Project spun the wheel, which landed on the $5,000 cash prize!

“We were all ecstatic and extremely grateful, it's an incredible thing at only nineteen, winning that amount of money.

Personally getting vaccinated was very important to me and I encourage anyone who is on the fence about getting the vaccine,

to educate yourself as much as you can and get them,. It's a simple and small thing you can do to keep yourself, your family and the rest of New Zealand healthy.

Being on The Project was an awesome experience for myself and my family, we are very thankful to be able to get vaccinated and feel incredibly lucky that we were chosen to be on ‘Wheel of Immunity’,” Angel explained.

REPAIR CAFÉ RETURNS Lincoln Envirotown is urging people not to throw away broken or torn things, because a Repair Café is scheduled for a morning in early December. People are asked to hang on to those household items, appliances, toys, bicycles or clothing which might be able to be fixed, bring them along to this event for mending or advice.

The Repair Café will take place at the Rolleston Community Centre on December 4th, details will be updated on Lincoln

Envirotown’s Facebook page and in Humanitix. People will be on hand to assist with free repairs and advice. There is no need to register for this event, simply turn up with items in disrepair and see if the team can repair them, or advise on a course of action.

The first of these events was held two years ago, which saw many electrical appliances and items of clothing given a new lease of life. A major feature was the number of bicycles that emerged from garages and sheds, which were made roadworthy again.

What Now?? - Still true a year on!

Covid 19 is another blip in the history of mankind. Property values may plummet, unemployment may rise, the world economy may collapse! What now? Life happens!

We have been through similar scenarios before and will do so again and again. Rule of thumb is generally to buy and sell in the same market, but if this is your first rodeo then what should you do?

Yes, housing markets may fall and if you buy now, then your property may not be worth the purchase price a year down the track, but that will only matter if you have to sell.

Kirwee sheep farmers, the Jones’, are leading the way in the sheep milking industry. Matt, Tracey and daughters Annabelle, Sam and Gabrielle, have recently unveiled a Havarti and Gouda cheese, as well as bottled pasteurised milk.

These products will complement their already popular sheep milk skincare products, Sabelle, which got its unique name by combining the three girls names!

Sabelle has also been named as a finalist in the 2021 Westpac Champion Business Awards in the Champion Producer/ Manufacturer - Small Category.

These new products were designed and created out of a dietary necessity, with Gabrielle having food allergies, as well as being dairy intolerant. Tracey started using goat milk powder when Gabrille was young, but she didn’t really like it.

Frustrated by a lack of options for easily digestible milk, Tracey started researching dairy alternatives from plant-based to other animal-based systems. She researched dairy that could be digested by someone who was lactose intolerant, that could support gut health, not exacerbate eczema and also provide a nutritional drink for her toddler. The deeper Tracey dug, the more certain she was that sheep milk was the answer to Gabrielle's problems.

People have been milking sheep

for thousands of years, and while it is not new in many cultures it is relatively new to New Zealand.

“It did take some finding, but what really surprised us was how good it tasted. There wasn’t the gamey taste associated with goat, it was more like cow’s milk, only with a silky texture,” commented Tracey.

So passionate in her belief that this was the solution her daughter needed, Tracey and Matt decided to start a new experience of milking sheep themselves. They both come from a sheep farming background and searched the world for the best milking genetics, brought them to New Zealand and started a sheep milk farm on the Canterbury plains.

They are currently milking a combination of approximately six hundred East Friesians, French Manech and Mountain Awassi. The sheep are treated like princesses and each one produces approximately 2 litres of milk each day, milked through a 12-aside herringbone shed.

Their milking system is natural, gentle on the environment and the animal welfare is of utmost importance to the whole family.

Just across from the milking platform, the family have built a milk processing and cheesemaking factory.

Farm Manager, Juan Cavallotti is also head cheesemaker, with cheesemaking in his blood as his

family has roots in Northern Italy and started making cheese over a century ago. They have recently teamed up with four other local sheep milk suppliers, so Juan expects to process up to 3,000 litres per day at the peak of the season.

Juan has developed a range of cheeses, but the first to be available will of course be the Havarti and Gouda, which people can purchase locally at the Darfield or West Melton Four Square, as well as other selected Four Square and New World Supermarkets in the South Island. With limited sheep milk cheese varieties in the supermarkets the Jones’ are excited to share their sheep milk cheeses with New Zealander’s.

“We know how good this is, we want sheep milk products to become an everyday item, available for everyone. There will also be more varieties coming before Christmas,” Tracey concluded.

The pasteurised sheep milk will be sold in 450 millilitres bottles and will retail for about five dollars. Matt describes it as, “the best, cleanest A2 milk there is available”.

ROLLESTON FIRE BRIGADE WOW! What a horrendous long weekend we had over Labour weekend. Three motor vehicle accidents on Canterbury roads in the same morning and multiple fatalities over the weekend too!

Please drive carefully on our roads, be aware of yourself, other drivers, your surrounding conditions and the environment you are driving in. Let’s all make sure we get home!

The Rolleston Brigade continues its busy year, having attended 363 call-outs as of October 25th, with seven call-outs over Labour weekend. We continue to have a variety of calls ranging from investigating smoke in the area, medical calls, to motor vehicle accidents.

Through these challenging Covid times, we have had to learn to adapt to some new procedures and sometimes a new way of doing things, however, we are still responding to all our

standard call outs and continue to crew our fire appliances. We are extremely grateful to have a committed team who volunteer their time to help look after Rolleston and the wider Selwyn area. Whilst you may only see a few firefighters on the appliance, there are many others supporting them and supporting the operation of the fire station.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter keep an eye out on our Facebook page, as we will be doing some recruiting soon.

AGRI TRAINING To address the gaps in the market for young people looking for career opportunities in the agricultural sector, a Canterbury training facility, Agri Training, is offering the Primary Trade Certificate Programme taught from the Winchmore training facility.

This full-time, forty week programme has been designed to meet the needs of young people who are not looking for degree qualifications, but who are looking for career opportunities and managerial pathways, while providing an NZQA Level 3 Certificate.

“As we have seen, Covid-19 has negatively affected all types of industries, however, the world needs food production and New Zealand farming is leading the way in innovation and growth.

It’s no longer a one-man band.

The agricultural industry is a massive multi-million dollar industry that requires all levels of skilled work and

professionalism,” said Agri Training Business Development Manager, Bryn Price.

“There are managerial roles available in the agricultural sector that often have fast pathways to six-figure salaries.

The programme begins with entrylevel core subjects providing a foundation before advancing into elective programmes, depending on students areas of interest.

“It can take people years working on a farm to gain the knowledge to support the practical work they are doing. We’ve designed the course so students can understand the ‘why’, not just the ‘how-to’. We teach analysis and business decision making alongside practical learnings,” Bryn concluded.

Agri Training will work with graduates to introduce them to an employer who will foster continued learning and with good terms and conditions. They will then provide a further six months of pastoral care to help with the transition into the industry.

This is a free programme covered under the Government fee free scheme for 2022 and upon completion, provides a New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture (NZ 3869) and a Agri Training Primary Trade Certificate. It is open to New Zealand citizens or permanent residents aged between 17 and 24 years old with a commitment to embark on a career in the agriculture sector.

WELL SUPPORTED CLINIC On October 28th, Rolleston held a Selwyn Vaccination Clinic at the Rolleston Community Centre.

This event was the initiative of Pinoy C.A.R.E.S Canterbury (a non -profit organisation committed to upholding and promoting Filipino culture and values through culture, arts, recreation, education/events and services/ sports) and Pegasus Health in cooperation with the Selwyn District Council, Selwyn Emergency Management, Selwyn Civil Defense and Canterbury District Health Board.

The event was well supported with 624 vaccinations administered, compared to 130 at the first clinic held on September 16th.

Grocery baskets were given to several people who were able to bring along two others to receive

their first vaccine, there was also a free sausage sizzle and snacks available.

ECONOMIC PLAN Businesses across the country are having an incredibly hard time.

I know of numerous business owners here in Selwyn, who have been paying staff and rents out of their retirement savings for the best part of a year, because of a multitude of unprecedented events that no business plan could have possibly foreseen.

People walk into my office all the time with heart-breaking tales of increasing desperation, asking what can be done. And they often ask me what National, if in Government, would do differently.

Firstly, as a responsible Mainlander, I tell them we would immediately return the South Island to Level 1 restrictions. Selwyn has reached a 90 percent vaccination rate for a first dose of the Pfizer vaccine and there is absolutely no need for our communities and businesses to continue being hamstrung by these ridiculous restrictions any longer.

And in the interests of being a constructive opposition, last week we’ve announced several plans to get New Zealand back to business, open our borders and resume life as normal.

Our ‘Back in Business’ package is full of measures to ensure businesses survive the next twelve months and include more cash support for small businesses, to help get them through these never ending Lockdowns and a clear pathway to reopening our economy and our borders as soon as possible.

There are a raft of measures, but a key

component of our plan is tax relief. At a time of extreme economic strain, we believe the Government should be easing the tax burden so that small businesses don’t just survive the next twelve months, but thrive as we reconnect to the world.

We’d introduce a new small business tax rate of 17.5 percent for two years, lift the 10.5 percent personal income tax threshold from $14,000 to $17,000, extend the loss carry-back scheme and offer an immediate $150,000 write-off on costs of new plant, equipment and related software to stimulate investment in more productive assets.

We’ve also set targets to end the Lockdown limbo. Right now there are one million vaccinated Aucklanders stuck at home, in their tenth week of Lockdown.

We would put an end to Lockdowns, reopen our economy and reconnect to the world when we hit 85-90 percent vaccination, along with district health board and agebased milestones, or on December 1st, whichever comes earlier.

These very clear and deliberate targets underpin our economic plan. We believe in delivering hope, not fear. Hope for businesses that there’s a way through, hope for parents that their children will be able to return to school, hope for people waiting for important surgeries, hope for Kiwis overseas that they can come home and be reunited with family for Christmas.

MOTHER OF ALL PROTESTS Groundswell NZ’s ‘Mother of all Protests’ will go ahead on Sunday, November 21st, even if there are still Covid-19 restrictions in some parts of the country. The protest follows the ‘Howl of a Protest’, which took place in July 2021, when an estimated 60,000 people turned out to protest against Government regulations.

Groundswell NZ leader, Bryce McKenzie said, “the group had met online recently and decided to go ahead with the nationwide protest against some Government regulations, which the group said are unworkable for farmers but are not only specific to the for the rural community.”

“We’re going ahead, we’ve had an overwhelming response from our coordinators up and down the country. All we ask is that people stick to the rules, and stick to their own vehicles and bubbles. If everyone does what they’re meant to do, there should be no problems,’’ Bryce explained.

The group wants freshwater improvement to be managed by catchment groups, and

rules about significant natural areas and the ‘ute tax’ to be re-written or abolished.

The plan is for supporters to drive their utes, tractors, trucks or cars to their nearest town centre (Selwyn District will focus on Rolleston area), where the group’s statement will be played over the Newstalk ZB radio frequency at 1:35pm.

Those taking part will turn up the volume of the radio, turn off their engines, open the windows and unite together, although socially distanced, in protest. The plan isn’t to gridlock New Zealand, although in some places it would probably be inevitable.

“Stand against the unworkable regulations that impact you and your family New Zealand, it’s time to unite and force the Government to take notice and acknowledge the Groundswell.

“Join in and help us build momentum towards the ‘Groundswell Gathering’ that will take place February 2022, at Parliament,” Bryce concluded.

THREE WATER REFORMS Nania Mahuta has finally shown her hand after months of ducking and diving behind faux ‘consultation’ with councils and announced they will be mandating their Three Waters Reforms, by introducing a bill to Parliament that will force Councils to hand control of their water assets to four mega water entities.

That means we here in Canterbury will be sucked into Entity D. The delivery of the drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services (that you own) will be removed from the Councils (that you elected) and handed to a Government-controlled, South Islandwide entity. Those services will be controlled by multiple layers of bureaucrats and appointed governors in these mega-entities, with no accountability to us. Whether you are in Selwyn, Christchurch, Ashburton, McKenzie or Waimakariri district, your water bill will end up cross subsiding

your neighbours.

This is obviously a move that my National colleagues and I will be vehemently opposing. We believe it is an unworkable, fundamentally flawed, and one-size-fits-all answer that has been pursued without adequate consideration of alternatives or proper consultation.

But whether you support the entity model or not, the Government’s decision to force it on your Council, remove your right to make an independent decision, and acquire and centralise your ratepayer-owned assets by legislation is outrageous. We maintain that there hasn’t been sufficient time or information to digest the detail and consult communities.

One final thing to bear in mind, reader, these Three Waters proposals are intended to take effect in 2024. There is an election between now and then.

SDC DISAPPOINTED Selwyn District Council (SDC) is extremely disappointed that the Government has made the decision to force Councils to become part of their new Three Waters reform entities.

At the SDC meeting on Wednesday, October 27th, soon after the announcement, a motion was passed to express its extreme disappointment at the decision to remove the opt-out option.

“SDC entered into the reform process after the Government committed to giving Councils a choice about opting in or out of any proposed new entity,” Mayor Sam Broughton said.

Sam previously led South Island Mayors in calling for a pause in the water reforms to allow a partnership approach and alignment with other major reforms, as well as to allow communities to have their say.

He shares the views of many of his fellow Mayors, that the u-turn by the Government has not reflected the good faith in which Councils have entered into the process.

“Based on that assurance, we committed to consulting with our communities before making any decision, that opportunity has now been stripped away from us,” he added.

The move to mandate the reform was signalled by the Government despite growing public opinion against the proposals.

In anticipation of this decision, the Council has been working with other

South Island Councils and Ngāi Tahu to influence the Government’s proposed South Island entity, to keep it focussed on local priorities. The Government has conceded that it needs to resolve some key concerns we have raised about governance and accountability and we will now press into that.

The Government will now set up a set up three separate working groups to address these elements of their reform model.

“Selwyn does not face many of the issues the Government is seeking to address with its reforms. Our water networks are relatively new and wellmaintained and the costs for our residents are some of the lowest in the country,” Sam explained.

“Ensuring Selwyn receives benefits through reform and doesn’t just pay twice to improve others systems on top of our own is an ongoing concern, and I simply do not believe that mandating this model is the best solution for Selwyn.

“The Council will continue to advocate strongly to ensure Selwyn communities have access to safe, high-quality water and wastewater services and that future improvements are continually delivered.

“We will take every opportunity to influence decisions to ensure Selwyn residents continue to receive the benefit of some of the best water services in the country,” Sam concluded.

WEST MELTON BOWLS RECAP The Opening Day at West Melton Bowling Club was held back in September with Club President Ron McNicholl, welcoming all who attended especially new players, most of whom were interested in becoming members. The honour of delivering the first jack and bowl, for the season, went to Mary Burke, who is currently President of the Malvern Club and Ian McKinlay, who is a Life Member of West Melton Bowls.

The President’s Trophy competition which was held in early October. The format was eight teams of Mixed 4’s and after three games the team of Joan McGinnes, Tony Gallen, Peter Bickley and Bob Burnett emerged the winners, with two wins and a draw.

Currently underway are the Women’s Singles and Triples, played on a Tuesday evening and the Men’s Triples on a Wednesday.

There are a large number of competitions coming up prior to Christmas which the Club will participate in.

The Club is also introducing a new community Socials Bowls competition (two bowls triple) starting on 18th November and running for four weeks. This is open to all non-bowlers and first -year bowlers who are interested in coming along and having some fun.

SELWYN COMMUNITY CARE UPDATE During these uncertain times, it is great to know that services such as Selwyn Central Community Care, based in Rolleston, are still operating. Our drivers, who are all volunteers, are double vaccinated and masked. We are receiving more and more requests for transport for folk who do not drive for any reason, but need to attend appointments both in the Selwyn area and in Christchurch City, through to Burwood Hospital.

We offer transport for shopping, attending groups, medical and dental appointments, library,

cafe trips, etc.

We also have a van which can transport small groups of people.

It has easy access which means anyone can be included on our social outings. When the summer finally arrives and we are hopefully down to Level 1 we have some great ideas for trips!

One of our continuing difficulties is financing this service. As it is voluntary there is no set charge, but we welcome donations especially with the rise in the price of fuel. We cannot fulfil the needs of the community on the smell of an oily rag!

To help raise vital funds we have a great fundraiser coming up.

Many of you will have sampled the famous Fairlie Pies on our social outings. We will be taking orders for their entire range, which includes vegetarian, creme of chicken, mince, mince and cheese, bacon and salmon, steak, silverside and pork belly. Single pies cost $6.50 each and will be delivered to the Rolleston area.

‘CATS ON COURTENAY’

Prior to the August Lockdown Rolleston Combined Probus held their Annual Quiz for the main part of our meeting. More than 100 members organised themselves into groups of six or seven, gave their team a name, and had their pens at the ready for the forthcoming 50 questions. These questions covered many topics and included something for everyone. As each section was completed the team totals were read out, with the overall win going to The Wreakers (pictured above).

ROLLESTON NETBALL CLUB Rolleston Netball Club would like to congratulate all their members on a fantastic season.

Although it didn’t end the way we had hoped, we did manage to get in more games than the previous year.

This season was always going to be an interesting one with the introduction of the new Selwyn Sports Centre. We were lucky enough to spend most of the first half of the season playing inside.

Also introduced this season was the Premier 1 grade, being played at Rolleston on a Thursday night. Our ‘A’ team secured a spot in this grade and would like to thank the many supporters that showed up every week.

This season our Club committee

has embarked on setting out our future plan. We worked with a strategic planning team and have made some amazing plans for the future, so watch this space!

We would like to thank all our members, including our Coaches, Managers, Umpires and Parents, without you all we wouldn’t be able to have a season at all. Also a special thanks to the Selwyn Netball Centre for all the hard work that goes into organising.
