Rolleston Road Rescue have taken out some impressive awards at the Australasian Road Rescue Challenge, held in Alice Springs, at the end of July. The team showed great skill in the three day competition, coming away with a First: Entrapment, Third: Time critical, Third: Overall Championship and Third: Top Medic.

Of the three New Zealand teams participating in the competition, the Rolleston team was the only

one to come first in a challenge.

The Entrapment challenge, consisted of two ‘patients’, one physically trapped under a motor vehicle, the other trapped inside. The team had to extricate both patients, complete a medical assessment and provide appropriate medical attention, as well as completing a professional hand over to arriving medics.

Training for these events is taken very seriously with the six

members of the Rolleston team committing to an additional six hours of training per week, for many months, prior to the event. Team captain, John Trounson said one of the most valuable training opportunities prior to competing was being able to go to the yard of Pick-APart in Christchurch to get some valuable real life experience cutting up vehicles.

John commented, “there are always some nerves when you are representing New Zealand in international competition, but most of the team had competed in past years which really helped.”

The hardest part of the challenge was dealing with the significant change in temperature, having left NZ with single figure temperatures to face 20+ degrees in Alice Springs. In addition, several members of the team came down with the flu while away.

“The team, comprised of Station Officer John Trounson (captain), Senior Fire Fighter Shannon Austin, Austin Senior Fire Fighter Ben Bishop, Bishop Senior Fire Fighter Rob Henderson (medic), Qualified Fire Fighter Simon Newman and Senior Fire Fighter Marty Tier, is grateful to all their friends and family who have supported them throughout the training and competitions, we couldn’t do it without them,” John concluded.

The Clearview Country Kids, coached by Anita van Looy and Ricky Hofmeester, Hofmeester will perform in the Year 1-4 category. The Clearview C-Birds, coached by Caitlin Buttle, Buttle will perform in the Year 5-6 category and the Clearview Steampunk Band, coached by Charlotte Shaw and Marama Prusas, Prusas will perform in the Year 7-8 category.

There is no time to waste resting on their recent success however, as the teams are straight into preparation fundraising and creating costumes, while continuing to fine tune their Jump Jam routines.

“A Barrel of Laughs” with Tim & Gary

Funny guy Gary McCormick and Mayor Tim Shadbolt are always well received at Melton Estate hence th eir return on September 13th to present 'A Barrel of Laughs'. Gary and Tim spin some great yarns - mostly about themselves and the people they meet on their comedy adventures, and keep their attentive audience in stitches.

“80% of us will need blood or a blood product some time in our lives, yet only 2.26% of eligible donors in Canterbury donate,” said Southern Regions’ Team Leader of Donor Recruitment, Ali Keast.

In fact it needs 12,000 new donors each year to replace the thousands of donors that are lost due to retirement, ill health or for personal reasons.

The New Zealand Blood Service (NZBS) have to collect just over 3,000 blood donations each and every week just to maintain an adequate supply of blood and blood products to hospitals throughout the country.

There is no substitute for human blood - healthy donors are the only source and whole blood only lasts for 35 days.

New Zealand donors’ blood is used in babies and pregnant women, heart disease, accident victims, cancer patients, orthopaedic (bone) surgery, other surgical treatments, liver

and kidney disease, children, and a variety of other medical conditions.

The donating process only takes an hour and that includes the refreshment of a chocolate biscuit and cup of tea at the end.

John Butson, Butson who was donating for his 83rd time at the January Lincoln Community Blood Drive commented, “I started donating in my 30’s and I donate about three times a year. It all started at work, joining colleagues to give blood. What inspired me to continue to donate was a car accident I was in eight years ago when my daughter was badly injured and subsequently req ui r ed a nu mb er of operations.”

Another key donor from the Lincoln community is Kevin Swete who has donated eighty times to date and has been doing so since the early 70’s, Kevin works for ECAN and so donates with other ECAN employees at the Lincoln Events Centre.

The criteria to donate are: ♦ Fit and healthy – free from coughs and colds ♦ Aged 16-65 for first time donors ♦ Weigh more than 50kg ♦ No piercing, tattoos, major

surgery in the last six months Must not have lived in the UK, Ireland or France for six months or more between 1980 and 1996. ♦ Anyone who has travelled recently should check the NZ Blood Services travel app online. ♦ Appointments are preferred, bring photo ID and eat and drink well before and following donation.

Last month a group of students from Clearview Primary School travelled to Latimer Square to assist with the ‘Feed the Homeless’ group. This opportunity came about after the Student Kaitiaki held a fundraiser Mufti Day in late June, where instead of the usual gold coin, the school collected donated items of food for the

‘Help for the Homeless’ charity.

‘Help for the Homeless’ was created to assist the cold and homeless people of Christchurch with the aim of providing clothes, bedding and at least one warm meal a week to those in need. Volunteers go to Latimer Square every Tuesday and to Cashel Street on Sundays. They offer hot meals

to the local homeless and on other days they give ‘takeaways’ - cans, crackers and other food items.

Clearview students found the experience to be educational, but also very humbling. It was definitely somethi ng to remember, as well as a reminder to be grateful for what one has.

This August, Selwyn households are being invited to sign up to the Selwyn Gets Ready website and go into the draw to win one of five household emergency ‘grab and go’ kits valued at $145.

The kits contain twenty three

items including a first aid kit, a torch with radio, an emergency tent and blanket, water purification tablets, and large water container. To join the website and go into the draw, visit www.selwyn.getsready.net

by August 31st and enter details. Anyone who has already registered will already be in the draw so there’s no need to sign up again.

The Selwyn Gets Ready website is a database which contains contact information for local residents. This information is used by local community response teams to identify who needs assistance in an emergency and who has skills or resources (like first aid skills, generators and four wheel drives) that could help in a disaster. In a disaster a network of community response teams operate in Selwyn and each team is responsible for checking on the welfare of their

community, identifying what needs to be done in their area, solving local problems if they can, and requesting assistance if needed. Nearly 6,000 Selwyn households are already registered with Selwyn Gets Ready, and around 120 people are members of local community response teams.

The Selwyn Gets Ready system can also be used to send texts or emails warning people of severe weather or other emergencies. Householder’s information is restricted to their neighbourhood support group coordinators, and the local community response team; it cannot be viewed by the public. ““Selwyn is very fortunate to have a large number of volunteers as neighbourhood support group coordinators and on local community response teams who help their communities in emergencies,” Sue concluded.

The Ellesmere Rugby Finals’ Day was scheduled for Saturday, August 8th with the committee having spent the week prior getting the field all set-up and everything looking immaculate. Unfortunately the weather didn’t play ball and Darfield was covered in snow on Saturday morning - after consultation it was decided to postpone Finals Day, and reschedule to the Sunday.

“On Saturday (the original scheduled day) we waited until the melt had started and at 1pm we started snow-ploughing the fields,” commented DRFC Promotions Manager Jeff Strowger.

Strowger “We followed this up with a set of harrows being towed behind a loader, as well as another loader pushing the snow drifts off the pitch. A heavy roller from 73 Hire then levelled the fields again - It looked like a construction site for most of the day,” Jeff laughed.

“Satisfied we had done all we could, we finished up at 9pm Saturday night and then woke Sunday morning to find ice on the ground! By 10am we had started dragging the harrows around to break up the ice, before rolling the fields again.

The grounds came up near perfect considering the torture they had endured for two days.”

“A fantastic day was the end result, with some great games of rugby played in all conditions. Conditions complete with snow flurries on and off for part of the day and freezing cold temperatures too,” Jeff concluded.

Selwyn residents continue to report a high level of satisfaction with council services in the latest residents’ opinion survey.

An independent research company interviewed 1,003 residents during June for the Council’s annual survey, which provides information on residents’ satisfaction with a range of council services and activities.

In this year’s survey, the proportion of residents who rated the Council’s overall performance as good or very good was 60%, up from 58% in 2013, when this question was last asked.

Waste management services remain the highest rated area.

This includes recycling collection, which was rated good or very good by 94% of residents who receive the service, up from 90% last year, and rubbish collection which was rated good or very good by 93% of residents who receive the service, an increase from 91% last year.

Other highly-rated services included organic collection (86% rated good/very good), parks and reserves (83%), public libraries (83%), children’s playgrounds (82%), sewerage and wastewater (81%) and public swimming pools (81%) - all of which were rated the same or higher than last year.

Lower-rated services included rural roads (34%), land drainage networks (36%), maintaining the district’s rural character (41%), making roads and footpaths safer (41%), and water races (42%).

Overall, 18 of the 26 services surveyed this year received ratings of 50% or higher, with nine rated above 75%. Only eight services recorded ratings below 50%. Sixteen services saw their ratings increase over last year’s levels.

In the 2015 survey, for the first time, residents were asked about their views on the quality of life in Selwyn district. A large majority of residents, 90%, agreed or strongly agreed that Selwyn is, “a great place to live”. That result was largely consistent across all wards and in both rural and township locations. Asked what factors contributed to Selwyn being a great place to live, respondents most often mentioned the district’s good atmosphere and environment, good community spirit and friendly people, accessibility to urban services, and good facilities and amenities.

More than three-quarters of residents, 76%, said they felt a sense of community with people in their neighbourhood.

A similar percentage indicated they were involved in local community groups or networks, such as through work or school, sports clubs, community groups, hobby or church groups.

Usage of community facilities by residents was very high, with 98% of respondents indicating they had used a community facility in the past year. Parks and reserves were used at least once by 78% of residents, while 67% had used public libraries, 65% had used community centres or halls, and 56% had used public

swimming pools.

Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe said the results are an indication that the Council is managing the district’s growth effectively.

“It is particularly significant that for most services residents are continuing to report consistently high levels of satisfaction over several years,” he said.

“In most cases satisfaction is being maintained or increased, which suggests we are planning and providing services that are meeting the needs of our growing communities. At the same time, however, we are also taking careful note of those services where residents are looking for improvements.

“It’s also encouraging to hear residents report that they enjoy living in Selwyn and appreciate the sense of community spirit and connection.”

Some variation in opinions about service levels was evident between rural and urban residents. In terms of overall performance, those living in towns (65%) were happier with the Council’s performance than those living rurally (51%). Across the district’s four wards, residents in Selwyn Central and Springs wards rate the council’s performance highest, at 64% and 63% respectively.

The telephone survey of 1,003 residents was carried out by Research First, and has a maximum margin of error of +/ -3.1%.

A fleeing Taliban terrorist, desperate for water, was plodding through the Afghan desert when he saw something far off in the distance. Hoping to find water, he hurried toward the mirage, only to find a very frail little Jewish man standing at a small makeshift display rack selling ties. The Taliban terrorist asked, “do you have water?” The old man replied, “I have no water. Would like to buy a tie? They are only TT .

The Taliban shouted hysterically, “Idiot Infidel! I do not need such a very overpriced western adornment. I spit on your ties. I need water!”

“Sorry, I have none, just ties - pure silk, and only TT “Pahh! A curse on your ties! I should wrap one around your scrawny little neck and choke the life out of you, but I must conserve my energy and find water!”

“Okay,” said the little old Jewish man. “It does not matter that you do not want to buy a tie from me, or that you hate me, threaten my life, and call me Infidel. I will show you that I am bigger than any of that. If you continue over that hill to the east for about two miles, you will find a restaurant. It has the finest food and all the ice-cold water you need. Go in peace.”

Cursing him again, the desperate Taliban staggered away, over the hill.

Several hours later he crawled back, almost dead, and gasped, “They won’t let me in without a tie…”
