The biggest names in music, alongside some of New Zealand’s most critically acclaimed artists and songwriters feature in the five finalists in line for the 2015 APRA Silver Scroll Award.

Springfield resident, the extremely talented Mel Parsons, is a first time Silver Scroll finalist with ‘Get Out Alive’, a song she wrote after a brush with death in a vehicle accident last year. With three solo albums to her name, Mel is well known as one of New Zealand’s indie-folk song-writing stars. “I'm thrilled to be a finalist, it's wonderful to be recognised by the music industry and my songwriting peers. It was a great surprise to be announced in the top twenty - so when the news came that I had made the top five, I was really chuffed. It's been a busy year with the release of my new album 'Drylands' - so the nomination is a nice way to celebrate all the work that has gone into making the album and getting it out to the world,� Mel said. “The Silver Scroll Awards are held in Auckland on September 17th, and my song 'Get Out Alive' will be performed on the night by another (yet to be announced) artist - usually of quite a different genre, so that will definitely be interesting,� Mel added!

Following the Silver Scrolls, Mel advised that she will be involved in a very special show at the Isaac Theatre Royal on November 5th where she will be joined by the one and only, Julia Deans (also from Canterbury).

Other finalists for the APRA Silver Scroll Award include the prodigiously gifted songwriter Ella YelichLorde) Yelich-O’Connor (Lorde Lorde for Yellow Flicker Beat, alongside co-writer and super-producer Joel Little.

Little Brothers Ruban and Kody Nielson are also finalists with Multi-Love, the Unknown Mortal Orchestra song that chronicles the trials and tribulations of polyamory.

Lyttelton’s golden boy Marlon Williams makes this year’s list with Dark Child, which was co-written with fellow ex-pat New Zealand songwriter Tim Moore.

Moore Deft urban storyteller Anthonie Tonnon is also a contender for the award with Water Underground, a cleverly constructed song about the ‘political masterstroke’ involving Transforming adversity into success; land use in the Canterbury plains.

It’s been a full on winter term at Springfield School. We have managed one of the worst outbreaks of flu we have seen in many years (one week we averaged less than 50% attendance) to managing to include a range of exciting cross-curricular activities as well as teaching the all important 3R’s.

SKIING Each winter our whole school hits the slopes at Porters for a six week ski programme. We are halfway through and thanks to a never ending supply of quality instructors at Porters our students are becoming confident skiers SKI RACING Our ski race team were fortunate to have the opportunity of a two day training programme with Fiona Stevens (nee Johnson) who flew up from her winter base in Queenstown to work with the team. Her expert tuition was much appreciated and contributed to our school winning the trophy for first place at the Mt Cheeseman Angus Johnson competing.

MAKING PIZZA This year our school’s cross curricula focus is Interaction. We are currently using the Food Technology area of the curriculum to study which interactions of flavours make the best pizza! The school headed to our local café the ‘Yello Shack’ recently to see what happens when flavours interact well, and what happens when they don’t!

Jacinda took us in to look at the wood-fired pizza oven at work which only takes a few minutes to cook a pizza. We all had a great time trying the pizza flavours and it was a wonderful chance to get some expert pizza-making advice!

We then formed groups to discuss what ingredients make the best pizza and a plan was made by each group to create a pizza with toppings of their choice.

Last Friday two of our parents Pam Aldersley and Louise Davis came to school and with Keri Steele our teacher made pizza dough from scratch with the groups. Ingredients for each pizza were brought along by group members and added to the base before baking.

Each group tasted the finished result and assessed whether they got the interactions of taste and texture right.

A picture tells a thousand words - some pizzas were demolished - others had plenty of leftovers!

The pizzas will be made again with adjustments based on each group’s evaluation and parents are invited to the Yello Shack for a taste of each, along with the chance to vote for their favourite. The most popular pizza will feature on the Yello Shack pizza menu for a month.

STRUM STRIKE BLOW Our school has taken part in a wonderful festival of instrumental music for the last three years. Children from schools in and around Christchurch join together to play massed items on ukulele, recorder and a variety of marimba with a backing band.

Adele Langlands has been tutoring our students in both ukulele (strum) and marimba (strike) for three years so we are developing some proficient musicians.

Our day includes practice, performance, as well as a swim and a shared family dinner at a Chinese restaurant.

The News office were the recipients of a Salmon Fillet Burger (new on the menu) and a Coffee, to review, from Darfield’s Burger Revolution.

Needless to say, it wasn’t a difficult task, with the burger being pronounced fresh, extremely tasty and definitely something the reviewer would order again. The caper and dill dressing, while greeted with some trepidation by one r eview er , w as en joyed immensely by both.

“The dressing and the freshness in the salmon burger were certainly big pluses and I will certainly be trying another from Burger Revolution the next time I order.”

The coffee meanwhile was divine, (plus came in a

takeaway cup that prevented burnt fingers!) and with none of the harsh bitterness that’s often encountered in coffee. Only complaint; it was finished far too quickly!

Mark Vincent, Vincent owner of Burger Revolution, commented that the Akaroa Salmon Burger was part of their continual development of new tastes and added that he felt strongly about including as the main ingredient, salmon sourced from Canterbury.

“We’re loving the local support we’re receiving,” Mark said, “and I’m loving chatting to customers, many of whom are now becoming regulars.”

quite some distance away. The popular red food caravan’s owners have listened to requests, and to accommodate customers’ requirements, are open until 7:30pm on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

For the News’ reviewers the coffee and salmon burger were undeniably big hits and without a doubt they’ll be tried again from the red caravan on South Terrace, at a later date.

The 28th Annual, Malvern School of Music Inc concert was held in the Darfield High School Hall on the afternoon of Sunday, August 23rd. The event provided an opportunity for the School’s wide range of pupils to perform to an appreciative audience.

The concert began with a welcome from the current Chairperson, Scott Walters, Walters and a few highlights from the annual report before handing over to MC Melissa Jebson.

The concert included nearly every one of the School’s 66 pupils, who range in age from three and a half to adult, as well as some guest performers. As MC, Melissa noted that many of the performances included more than one member of the family, from siblings, to parents and children, plus even a grandmother and granddaughter.

At the conclusion of the performance, presentations of flowers and gifts were made in

recognition of a number of contributors mentioned above and also to the School’s Administrator, Lynn Meder.

Jordan Watson, Captain of the Malvern Youth Boys’ Hockey Team accepts the Canterbury Hockey Association Division One Championship trophy from the Harewood Hockey Club president - under the watchful eyes of the rest of the Malvern team.

Malvern Hockey’s Youth Boys’ team have been recognised as champions of the Canterbury Hockey Association Division One, following a long and hard fought season. The team’s success started when they won the Porritt Cup early on, followed by some very attractive hockey throughout the season, scoring 59 goals and only conceding 12. This all built to a climax last weekend when they played Harewood A in the Division One final.

Within twenty seconds of the game starting, Malvern had conceded a penalty corner. The pressure was on, but an excellent save by goalkeeper Tom Wilson steadied the nerves

and Malvern started to play their usual passing game, putting substantial pressure on Harewood. Just as Malvern were starting to exert some real control, Harewood had a quick break into the penalty circle and scored with a rebound.

After the halftime and change of ends, Malvern put together some good midfield play Michael Miller linking up well with Paul GerrardGerrard-Smith, Smith Daniel Martin, Martin Brett Langlands and Finn McGregor.

McGregor Persistence finally paid off when Paul dribbled into the area and took a shot which Finn deflected elegantly into the right hand corner of the net.

The drama was not over yet though and Harewood came back strongly, stalwart defence

by Matt King, King Jordan Watson and Marcus Anderson dealt with most incursions, and Tom cleaned up well, when necessary. As the game entered the final thirty seconds a break away by Harewood almost snatched them a win, but Tom pulled off an excellent save which meant the game had to go to a penalty flick

shoot out.

The spectators on the side lines were now on the edges of their seats and awaiting to see what the shoot-out would bring Harewood went first and scored while Malvern suffered a mishit.

Malvern then scored, followed by a save which prevented Harewood gaining a point. The tension mounted and scores see sawed until Harewood equalised with their fifth flick, which meant Marcus Anderson had all of Malvern’s hopes on his shoulders. He took his time and with little fanfare, scored a great penalty flick resulting in Malvern being crowned the Youth B oys’ D ivis ion One Champions.

To the Editors: In response to Mr Baldwin’s letter to the Malvern News of July 31st, the Selwyn District Licensing Committee would like to thank him for his letter and provide some background on this.

Mr Baldwin raises the issue of

whether the hearing on the Thirsty Liquor application could have been held in Darfield. In this instance the option of holding the hearing locally was considered, however a suitable venue was not available.

If objectors wish to discuss the arrangements the committee

has put in place we request that they please contact the licensing committee before a hearing and the committee will look at arrangements, including venue and whether an objector can be heard at a nominated time.

After discussions with the Licensing Committee Chair he advises that if he had known some time prior to the hearing date that a number of the objectors were unable to attend for various reasons, a number of options could have been considered.

A seven eth birthday should be celebrated in style and that is exactly what the DarďŹ eld Garden Club did recently.

The celebra on was held at the Terrace Winebar and Restaurant in DarďŹ eld and the venue certainly looked fes ve with tables set with silver, glassware, printed invita ons and chocolates. Club member Anna Clarke arranged a stunning posy bowl of seasonal owers for each table which added the ďŹ nishing touch. A large bunch of helium balloons, in complementary colours to the owers, completed the party atmosphere.

Quite a few members were on holiday and unable to a>end but many sent their good wishes for the day, as did the Rolleston Garden Club which was a much appreciated gesture. Guests from sister Garden Clubs were each presented with a beau ful corsage on arrival and seemed to enjoy themselves as they mingled with DarďŹ eld Club members. ANer a delicious lunch, well cooked and presented, Patroness Marjorie CaNell cut the celebratory cake. It almost seemed a shame to do so, as it looked so pre>y, but it was as good as it looked and members enjoyed a slice with their coee. Long serving member Margaret Ridgen then gave a talk on the seventy year history of the Club, taken from the minutes, which was most interes ng and enjoyed by all.

Marjorie also added a few words reminding those present of past members and events that had occurred.

Pat Newmarch, as President, closed the day and commented that it was her pleasure to present the Club’s Patroness, honorary members and guests with lovely Polyanthus plants before they leN for home. “It was an occasion where all members played a part, but a huge thank you must go to the Commi>ee for all their hard work and the li>le extras they provided to make it such a memorable day,� Pat commented. “How will such an event be celebrated in another seventy years, now there’s a thought?�

Malvern Netball ANZfutureFERNS held a Festival Day on August 22nd to celebrate the end of the netball season for 2015.

The dress-up theme was come as a super hero, personal hero or princess and most took advantage of a lovely day to don their finest outfits.

The day culminated with a prize giving where each child received a sample box of Milo Cereal and a box of Meadow Fresh flavoured Milk - which was all sponsored - and much enjoyed!

The Centre expressed their gratitude to Charlotte CampbellCampbellLamerton and Nic Kelly for all their hard work making the New Zealand Netball programme such a success.
