A sold-out crowd of 450 people celebrated the success of the district at the largest ever Selwyn Awards Gala Dinner, held at the Lincoln Event Centre on Saturday, July 31st. 104 Selwyn businesses, groups and individuals were recognised for their excellence at the Awards. Comedian Ben Hurley compered the evening, and guests were entertained by a talented lineup including renowned soprano Amanda Atlas, Atlas award-winning entertainer Trevor Jones, Jones eightpiece band ‘Studio 54’ featuring vocalist Courtenay Washington, Washington and eye-catching acts from Epic Entertainment. The menu included a range of food and beverages sourced from Selwyn producers. In a first for the Awards, gold, silver and bronze honours were presented along with overall award winners for each of the 10 categories. It was a new-look event with several changes building on the experiences of previous years. These included an expanded range of categories, the ability for entrants to nominate themselves, and a points-based scoring system. This resulted in a record number of nominees and votes for the People’s Choice Award, with the

Ballooning Canterbury from Hororata was awarded a gold medal and won the overall Tourism category. This family business has been owned and

operated by Kate and Michael Oakley since 2012 and they been on a steep learning curve working within the tourism sector. Operating three different size balloons for 365 days of the year, subject to weather, makes for a very busy time. Michael is the main pilot with Nicholas, Nicholas their son, a second part time pilot since the decline in tourism due to Covid.
