A sold-out crowd of 450 people celebrated the success of the district at the largest ever Selwyn Awards Gala Dinner, held at the Lincoln Event Centre on Saturday, July 31st. 104 Selwyn businesses, groups and individuals were recognised for their excellence at the Awards.

Comedian Ben Hurley compered the evening, and guests were entertained by a talented lineup including renowned soprano Amanda Atlas, Atlas award-winning entertainer Trevor Jones, Jones eightpiece band ‘Studio 54’ featuring vocalist Courtenay Washington, Washington and eye-catching acts from Epic Entertainment.

The menu included a range of food and beverages sourced from Selwyn producers.

In a first for the Awards, gold, silver and bronze honours were presented along with overall award winners for each of the 10 categories.

It was a new-look event with several changes building on the experiences of previous years.

These included an expanded range of categories, the ability for entrants to nominate themselves, and a points-based scoring system.

This resulted in a record number of nominees and votes for the People’s Choice Award, with the

Ballooning Canterbury from Hororata was awarded a gold medal and won the overall Tourism category. This family business has been owned and

operated by Kate and Michael Oakley since 2012 and they been on a steep learning curve working within the tourism sector. Operating three different size balloons for 365 days of the year, subject to weather, makes for a very busy time. Michael is the main pilot with Nicholas, Nicholas their son, a second part time pilot since the decline in tourism due to Covid.

WINTER MAGIC A SUCCESS After intensive months of planning, the first Winter Magic in Springfield was celebrated on the last Saturday in July. Tara Keogh and Isabella Irsigler lined up a broad range of local performers, stallholders, crafters and artists, who all came together to entertain the crowd of almost 1,000 visitors throughout the day.

Talented entertainer Shad Rutherford and the beloved Natural Magic Pirates with their puppets were a true highlight for the little ones, while the devoted girls from DanzFit Studios delivered a jaw-dropping performance on stage. Local musicians, ‘The Wax Birds’, Noel Nielsen and the Darfield Ukulele Group made

sure that all feet were dancing and shared beautiful singalong hits. “The feedback from stall holders and visitors was absolutely incredible and we couldn’t have wished for a better outcome,” commented Izzy.

As a special surprise, fire spinner Tom Thatcher, Thatcher awaited the group of children after their lantern walk at the Springfield Donut, ending the day with a spectacular fire poi show.

“We’ll most certainly be back next year!” Tara commented excitedly. “We did all the hard groundwork of paving the way for an annual event and will bring something even bolder, bigger and more enchanting next winter! We will see you then!”

NEW OFFICE AND VEHICLE Numerous people in the community will be aware of the amazing job the team of nurses do from Darfield Area District Nursing. On Wednesday, July 28th, the team opened their new office on Telegraph Road and were also rewarded with the presentation of a new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, which was purchased with funds donated by the Malvern Lions Club, Malvern Farmers Vet Charitable Trust and the Darfield Branch of Rural Women. This beautiful new vehicle is perfect for the diverse roads the nurses need to travel each day. The donation is very much appreciated by the District Nursing team and the organisation wish to thank the charities for their support.

Malvern Health and Community Welfare Trust, which hold a contract with the Canterbury District Health Board, for nursing services in the Malvern area.

NEW OWNER FOR FAT BEAGLE CAFÉ IN DARFIELD Darfield’s whole food café ‘The Fat Beagle’ changed ownership this week, for the first time in five years.

The cosy, relaxed lunch and coffee spot, popular with locals, is at home in one of the oldest historic building in Darfield.

Originally the town’s General Store, built in 1914, it has a beautiful white weatherboard exterior and an interior of kauri tongue-and-groove floors, walls and ceiling, giving it a true sense of history.

Above The Fat Beagle café is Dalethorpe House, a clothing, gift and living store owned by Rachel Ferguson, Ferguson who is now the new owner of the café.

Lydia Gliddon, Gliddon calling this week the end of an era for her, has continually developed the café over her time as owner and admits that the last five years have flown by.

“What a ride it has been, doubled the size of the café, a baby, a pandemic, moved from seven staff to thirteen, built a new house, catered platters, dinners and evening functions, all while open seven days a week. I’d hate to think how much coffee I have consumed!” commented Lydia smiling.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS The Malvern Community Arts Council (MCAC) is pleased to accept applications from established, emerging and local artists who wish to exhibit at Darfield Artweek 2021. This year it will be taking place from Saturday, October 9th to Sunday, October 17th, 2021, in the Darfield Recreation Centre.

Darfield Artweek is an annual celebration of art that attracts entries from artists in Selwyn District, the city of Christchurch and countrywide. In addition to our main exhibition this year, we will also have a Youth exhibition. Young artists

between the ages of thirteen to twenty one are invited to enter their artwork in this Youth exhibition.

Application forms for both exhibitions are now available on the MCAC website or at Te Huanui Art Gallery, in Darfield.

This year Darfield Artweek is celebrating forty years and MCAC are planning some special events. Winning entries from past Darfield Artweek exhibitions will be showcased in a ‘Memory Lane’ exhibition at Te Huanui Art Gallery, in Darfield.

The Artweek Committee is grateful to local businesses

and the Friends of MCAC for their support of Artweek and the awards for the winning artists. Winning entries will be announced at the opening night function on Friday, October 8th.

She jokes that they have a fat Labrador at home on their farm, but doesn’t intend to rename the business.

“A big thank you to Lydia for what she has done for the café in the last five years, she has made it a well patronised business for locals and visitors to enjoy,” Rachel concluded.

PHOTO FUNDRAISING SUCCESS Last weekend, Darfield Plunket and Toy Library hosted local photographer, Anna Craigie of Flair Photography, for their annual photo fundraiser.

Eighteen families supported the event by booking a time slot and were rewarded with beautiful images of their loved ones to cherish for a lifetime. Darfield Medical Centre Ltd have been providing Covid-19 vaccinations since the middle of June from their satellite clinic at West Melton. These clinics are held on a Wednesday and Thursday, with a total of 120 vaccinations a week.

This vaccination program is more complex than the flu vaccine clinics, requiring more dedicated staff and waiting room space.

Therefore these vaccines are not being offered at Darfield and only available for the two days a week at West Melton in order to continue to offer other GP and nursing services.

The practice is not part of the national booking system at this stage, therefore West Melton would not be an option when you phone or book online. This is due to a large enrolled elderly population, the practice wanted to ensure they could offer these vulnerable people an appointment closer to home. The staff have recalled all over 70 year olds enrolled at Darfield Medical Centre Ltd now and are booked out until end of September for vaccination bookings.

There is an option for those who are in group 3 or the first age band in group 4 (60-64years) to phone the Medical Centre directly to book an appointment at West Melton from now on. Remember, there are limited bookings and are restricted to Wednesday and Thursdays only at this stage. There are many other locations in the wider area offering vaccinations including Orchard Road where there is plenty of parking and is easy to access.

For those that are eligible to book their vaccines, it can be done online at bookmyvaccine.nz or phone 0800 282 926 (8am to 8pm, 7 days) or contact Darfield Medical Centre 03 318 8511.

Depending on vaccine supply and progress with other age groups, invitations will open up to: • people over 45 years - from mid to late August • people 35 plus from mid to late September • everyone else will be eligible from October.

Important info: • You’ll need to get your second dose of the vaccine at least 21 days (3 weeks) after your first dose. Getting 2 doses of the vaccine is important to give you the best protection.

• Allow at least two weeks between the COVID-19 vaccine and the influenza (flu) vaccine.

• Like all medicines, you might experience some mild side effects 1-2 days after getting your vaccination. This is common, and a sign that your body is learning to fight the virus.

Anyone who has driven past Springfield School recently will have noticed some significant changes. The main block has been demolished and the new building is well underway, with roofing, windows and cladding due to be installed imminently.

Despite recent major weather events and nationwide building material shortages, the project is still on schedule to be completed before Christmas, with landscaping and finishing touches planned during the Christmas holidays.

The School is now turning its attention to the next major event, the celebration of Springfield School’s 150th Jubilee. Springfield School actually turns 150 this year, however, the decision was made to defer the Jubilee until early 2022 and celebrate the opening of the new school building alongside the Jubilee.

The Jubilee will be held over Waitangi weekend 2022, with events on February 4th - 6th.

With planning well underway, it is shaping up to be a great weekend.

THE INS AND OUTS OF INSURANCE ON YOUR RENTAL PROPERTY Insurance is one of those things we wonder why we are spending so much money on it, but then when we need it we are pleased that we do!

And if we don’t, at some stage we will wish we did.

I really encourage landlords and tenants to not only have insurance, but understand what they are covered for.

Many landlords have previously lived in their rental property and need to discuss any changes with their insurance company. A rental policy and a personal policy are quite different.

All companies and policies are not created equally and having a good conversation with your insurance company about what you are covered for is a must. Does your policy cover rental arrears? Do you need to meth test between tenancies? How often do inspections need to be carried out etc?

Landlords also need to provide insurance information on any new tenancies, to the tenants, including what the excess is. They also need to provide the policy details if required, to the tenants.

In August 2019, the insurance laws relating to rentals changed and state that if a tenant or their guests cause damage to a rental, they are liable for the damage. They can draw on the landlord’s insurance policy to repair the damage and must pay up to four weeks rent or the landlords insurance excess, whichever is lower.

This leads to tenants and understanding what your insurance covers. In my experience, many tenants do not have contents cover, which means that if something were to happen, like the house burning down, you will have no compensation. Not only will you lose everything you own in the house, (landlords insurance only covers the house and what they own in it such as curtains, oven etc), you may also face interrogation from the landlord’s insurance company who will be looking for someone to claim the money back from. When you set up your contents insurance, I recommend asking specifically if the policy covers liability as well as insurance. If you cause damage to your rental, your excess may be lower than your landlords.

Now is as good a time as any to consider insurance if you haven’t already, or to talk to your insurance company and be sure you are properly covered.

Let’s talk tyres!

There have been reports over the years from NZTA and MTA about tyre tread depths and performance when they are worn. Darfield Automotive undertake WOF checks under contract to NZTA and the legal minimum for tyre tread depth is 1.5mm. We know from experience that once a tyre gets to this level it loses almost all of its performance, in fact in wet conditions, at 1.5mm of tread the vehicle takes twice the stopping distance than if it had new tyres fitted.

The MTA has recently run a campaign to inform road users about the dangers of running worn tyres. MTA and I still strongly encourage vehicle users to check their tyres every few months and are asking road users to consider changing their tyres at around 3mm.

Tyres are not just round black things holding up your car. I firmly believe that tyres should be fitted to people and their driving style, as much as they are physically fitted to your car.

If you are doing long straight driving then you want a different

tyre to someone who drives a lot on shingle roads, or around hills.

OLYMPIC HORSE WITH LOCAL CONNECTIONS Local equestrian Bert Elstob from Casebrooke Stud has been involved in the horsemanship and the horse breeding industry for numerous years.

A horse he bred named ‘Casebrooke Lomond’ (paddock name Sparky), was selected for the Australian Olympic Show Jumping team, to compete in Tokyo with rider Katie Laurie.

Laurie At the time of going to print Katie and Casebrooke Lomond had elected to retire in course in the Individual Qualifier on Tuesday, for reasons unknown at this stage.

Bert named his stud after daughters Casey and Brooke (Casebrooke) and has had a passion for horses for a long time. Bert’s mare (Sparky’s mum) Lara I, was imported from America by Bert with the help of Paul Ffoulkes from Goldengrove Stud, in Greendale. Lara I was bred in Germany where she was a champion mare, before moving to the United States where she unfortunately bowed a tendon, therefore came to New Zealand to be used for breeding.

Sparky’s sire Lansing (also from where Europe) was based at Goldengrove Stud, where Lara I went after she failed to successfully carry a living foal in the far south. She got in foal to Lansing and stayed at the Stud in Greendale to be foaled, having Sparky in 2008.

Sparky is a white stallion, also used for breeding, and is currently co-owned by Sheena Ross and Katie and Jackson Laurie.

Laurie “He loves competing, he’s the happiest when he’s on a show run! At home he likes to let everyone know he’s king of the place, but he is also great to deal with,” commented Sheena.

Katie, aged 35, has ridden Sparky throughout his entire ten year career, starting when Sparky was three years old and have now formed the ultimate dream team!

Katie has been Sparky’s only rider and together they have won New Zealand national titles and after moving to Australia, won titles there as well. The next move took them to Canada

they qualified for Australia to compete at the Tokyo Olympics.

Katie also has a second horse, owned by herself, called Django.

He is sired by Lordano, also a stallion who was standing at stud in Greendale and also earned his certificate of capability for Tokyo.

Django and Sparky are just two of five horses with Greendale connections to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. Two others qualified for New Zealand in Eventing, Ricker Ridge Sooty GNZ and Ricker Ridge Rua and one for Australia in Eventing, Wanda GNZ.

To the Editor: Prior to the long term plan, Selwyn District Council (SDC) were advised by over 80% of residents that did not want the mains sewage system in Darfield.

Despite the huge majority, SDC announced they were going to do it anyway. A four-stage plan in one stating they were going to borrow $28 million dollars, but no account how they were going to repay it. General ratepayers will foot the bill. The $28 million dollars will balloon to some eyewatering figure.

Three reviews over fifteen years were completed at massive expense to ratepayers, each one recommending a sewage system, each time the Council buried their heads. Imposing charges on the developers at the outset would have had the system paid for itself by now. Councillors who stand up to the decisions are threatened with the removal of funding in specific areas. It appears the appointed are ruling the elected time the SDC had a review/change/re-structure saving millions. Paying for Council mistakes and lack of vision must stop. We need a Mayor and Council that will stand up for residents and be accountable. Openness and honesty may cause discussion, but lack of it causes distrust and no confidence.

To the Editor: The Council has engaged with the local community over a proposed scheme for many years and has heard a range of views both for and against. Our decision making is informed by all of these conversations, but also takes account of the sustainability of the current system, potential environmental impacts, and providing for future growth opportunities.

We have a one-time opportunity to access $10.6 million in Government funding not previously available, which would be lost to the project if not used now.

Our decision means that all new developments in Darfield would connect to the scheme, as well as businesses along the Main Street. We have acknowledged concerns raised during the latest consultation, and have agreed to further engage with the community over connection to the scheme, and the timeframe for connection. We have also agreed to review how the project is funded.

We accept that many residents have good septic tanks with resource consents and we are working with Environment Canterbury to allow households to keep using these for up to fifteen years.

Darfield and Kirwee have a great future and part of making that happen is providing the infrastructure they need to flourish.

To the Editor: Given his Union background, Iwas somewhat surprised to see Health Minister Little on television berating the nurses for not accepting the latest offer from the Ministry bureaucrats.

Even Joe public knows that any agreement made by representatives during a pay and conditions negotiation is subject to the rank and file membership agreeing to any offer.

For my part, I applaud the nurses for exercising their democratic rights in rejecting the offer, which I understand was not only about recognising the value of the work they do, but also about gaining written guarantees for all the other promised deliverables that have been long on promise but short on delivery.

We will all at some point in our lives rely on nurses in times of need. Minister Little indicates the country cannot afford the $408 million requested.

He has however, found $500 million for administration for this Government’s ideological aspirations for Health, which no doubt will not deliver one more doctor, nurse or hospital bed.

If our health system is to return to the standard of care we expect, our nurses need to be valued, resourced and rewarded for the very considerable responsibility they carry every hour they are caring for our citizens.

On July 31st, Darfield High School’s (DHS) senior students were whisked away to a formal above the clouds. With an abundance of decorations and warm music, students were welcomed with an elegant atmosphere where they spent their evening.

This year’s formal committee was committed to creating an ethereal, carefree feeling for Darfield’s seniors. The theme, ‘Night Above the Clouds’ captured this perfectly. The use of 3D textured decorations and clouds helped convey this mood.

Students were surrounded by these decorations, helping create a carefree feeling.

Building site burglaries and vandalism!

Over the last couple of weeks, we have had an increase in building products and tools being stolen from houses under construction in the Selwyn area.

Suspect vehicles have been seen in the area in the early hours of the mornings, with people loading timber and gib board onto vehicles, some of these suspects have been wearing hi-vis clothing.

These types of thefts have also occurred to tradesman’s vehicles that have been parked at their home addresses overnights. Ute canopies have been forced open and large amounts of tools have been stolen. If you can, park your vehicle off the road and back it up to a wall or a garage door so the canopy rear door can not be opened. If you are buying tools, only buy them from a reputable business, if the price sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Engrave your tools with your driver’s licence number, that way if found they are easier to return to you.

• Record the serial number of your tools and keep the list in a safe location.

• Always secure your tools using good strong locks.

• Report any suspicious activity to Police.

How to protect your building site from burglaries.

When tools and materials are stolen from building sites there is a huge financial cost, not only in replacing the tools but often the site has to be closed down, this often delays the project timelines.

The best way to handle thefts on sites, is to prevent it before it happens.

There are a large number of firms that offer very good security cameras that light up the site at night and also record activity when the cameras are activated.

Having cameras and security signs around the site can deter and prevent thefts.

• Good security footage can also assist police in their investigations.

• Motion detecting lights can help deter intruders.

• Make sure tools and materials are locked away at night and don’t have products delivered on-site and left, when there is no one working on the site.

Report any suspicious activity around building sites, it is very unlikely that builders etc would be working or coming and going from the sites in the hours of darkness, so if you see anything suspicious report it straight away.

The 28th annual Malvern Game Hunters compe88on, held last weekend, saw an increased number of registra8ons as the previous few years.

Approximately 210 hunters bagged a good number of large, impressive animals for the weigh-in, on Sunday at the Coalgate Tavern, which saw people from all over the South Island aAending.

Weights overall were slightly down in boar and red stag sec8ons compared to last year, but increased in the fallow stag, tahr and chamois sec8ons, with the heaviest tahr over 25kg heavier.

Richard Tapp weighed in the impressive tahr taking out the weight category, as well as the Douglas Score (a system for measuring and evalua8ng antlers, horns and tusks of New Zealand big game animals by symmetrical size - devised by the late Norman Douglas).

Emma Cunningham took out her sec8on of the pig carrying compe88on, once again showing her strong form in this event for many years running. Jim Glasson was awarded the Mark Ranui Memorial Trophy, for the biggest boar weighed-in from a Malvern Game Hunters Club member.

SUCCESSFUL SWIMMING COMP Selwyn Swim Club competed at the South Island Short Course Championships, held in Blenheim from 23rd to 25th July.

The Club had thirteen swimmers competing in a range of events over the three-day competition.

For many swimmers in the team, this was their first South Island level meet and they swam exceptionally well, with Holly Smith qualifying for the 400m Freestyle and brother Ben Smith qualifying in the 400m Individual Medley, for the New Zealand Short Course Champs in August. The rest of the team start their preparation again, as they begin a new block of training focusing on the end of the year’s inter-club competitions.

The Board meeting was held on Monday, July 26th in the Darfield Library and Service Centre meeting rooms with the Council’s Group Manager, Community Services and Facilities in attendance to provide information.

At a workshop, prior to the meeting, the Chief Executive tabled maps showing the four options currently being consulted on for the new ward boundaries for Selwyn. The Board agreed to submit in support of Option 2, three wards and ten councillors with the retention of the community board to assist the two councillors in covering a very large area. The Council’s Representation Review Subcommittee will consider all the submissions received and decide on which of the four options to proceed with for the elections next year.

The Board has received $14,000 of ward discretionary funds for the next year and will be very pleased to receive applications for funding from individuals and groups living or active in the Malvern Ward. Information on all the funding that Council has to offer can be found using the link at the end of this article. At this meeting, the Board made a grant to Rubie Leech to assist with attending the NCIAF Aerobics Nationals in August.

The recent flood events have resulted in several actions being needed and the Board received a report on the Council’s application to the NZ Transport Authority for financial assistance for emergency restoration work to remediate the damage caused by the heavy rain event on May 29th -31st, that severely affected parts of the Malvern District and residents’ lives.

Also received was a report on the joint Selwyn District Council and ECan flood tour that talked to residents at areas where major damage occurred to look at how these sites could be better protected in the future.

A Malvern River Group meeting was held on July 12th, chaired by Board Member Karen Meares and attended by flood affected residents, ECan and Selwyn District elected members. From this meeting, it was agreed to set up a steering group to work with ECan to investigate long term options for river management and rating funding.
