Ex-Darfield High School student and current Darfield Bakery employee, Rochelle Waters, Waters was awarded a New Zealand Down Syndrome Association (NZDSA) National Achievement Award, in early July. Rochelle was nominated for this award by Canterbury Special Olympics administrator Helen Mitchell. Mitchell The ceremony took place at Government House, in Wellington, where Rochelle was accompanied by one of her employers Joe Daly, Daly as well as her family. After the ceremony, everyone mixed and mingled while enjoying a ‘High Tea’. Rochelle was extremely excited to be nominated for this award and felt very honoured to receive it, she thoroughly enjoyed spending this special occasion with a few of the significant people in her life. “I would like

to thank everyone who has supported and encouraged me along the way. I am very grateful to have been recognised,” commented Rochelle. Rochelle completed work experience at Darfield Bakery in her last year of high school and her fantastic work ethic lead to her being offered permanent work, three days a week. She loves her role at the Bakery, helping out flouring the bread tins, cutting the bread, sweeping the floor, doing the dishes and icing biscuits, are just a few of the tasks she does. Rochelle also loves the camaraderie she has with her work colleagues and thinks her bosses are pretty awesome. Rochelle has a long list of achievements throughout her lifetime. She started swimming with the Special Olympics in

2002 and has competed in ribbon days right through to National Games. She swims at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre and loves making new swimming friends. Her goals are to keep swimming hard and to train on as many Wednesday nights as possible. She became a Global Messenger for the Special
