Ex-Darfield High School student and current Darfield Bakery employee, Rochelle Waters, Waters was awarded a New Zealand Down Syndrome Association (NZDSA) National Achievement Award, in early July. Rochelle was nominated for this award by Canterbury Special Olympics administrator Helen Mitchell.

Mitchell The ceremony took place at Government House, in Wellington, where Rochelle was accompanied by one of her employers Joe Daly, Daly as well as her family. After the ceremony, everyone mixed and mingled while enjoying a ‘High Tea’.

Rochelle was extremely excited to be nominated for this award and felt very honoured to receive it, she thoroughly enjoyed spending this special occasion with a few of the significant people in her life. “I would like

to thank everyone who has supported and encouraged me along the way. I am very grateful to have been recognised,” commented Rochelle.

Rochelle completed work experience at Darfield Bakery in her last year of high school and her fantastic work ethic lead to her being offered permanent work, three days a week. She loves her role at the Bakery, helping out flouring the bread tins, cutting the bread, sweeping the floor, doing the dishes and icing biscuits, are just a few of the tasks she does. Rochelle also loves the camaraderie she has with her work colleagues and thinks her bosses are pretty awesome.

Rochelle has a long list of achievements throughout her lifetime. She started swimming with the Special Olympics in

2002 and has competed in ribbon days right through to National Games. She swims at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre and loves making new swimming friends. Her goals are to keep swimming hard and to train on as many Wednesday nights as possible. She became a Global Messenger for the Special

After a two year gap, due to Covid, Kirwee Players want to start their show with a bang, so they have now reduced the ‘West Side Story’ opening night ticket price to only $35.

Opening Gala Night is a truly special occasion for guests, upon arrival patrons are welcomed with a complimentary drink to celebrate. Supper is provided after the show by the Kirwee Hall Committee, who have catered the event since its inception.

Kirwee Players would like to acknowledge the continued support they receive from the Kirwee Community Hall and from locals. This is a good fundraiser for the Hall Committee and a way for Kirwee Players to give back as well. Gala Night is a great social evening of live theatre and good company creating an annual soiree that local groups look forward to.

Traditionally patrons would attend the Gala in a woolshed with an attached marque. It was always cold and the gas heaters inevitably froze up. In rain, wind

and even snow, the cast themselves used to run outside, to get from one side of the stage to the other. Kirwee Players helped raise funds to develop the Hall into the multi-use facility we have today. “We are privileged to have the warm and inviting Kirwee Hall to cater for all of our needs now. This year's show is the 47th Kirwee Players have performed at the Hall,” commented Linda Gosling, Gosling on

behalf of Kirwee Players.

DARFIELD LOCAL CAST AS LEAD The newly founded New Zealand Youth Ballet Company (NZYB), recently had their debut performance of ‘Pinocchio’ for KidFest in the first week of the school holidays. Darfield local and ex-student of Malvern Ballet School, Lisalotte Polderman Charles, Charles was accepted into the company at the beginning of the year and was cast as one of the leads.

Originally choreographed by Tony Behan and staged by former Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB) Principal dancer, Abigail Boyle, Boyle the show amassed huge

success over its eight shows.

Lisalotte has been in preprofessional programmes for the last three years, before which she was dancing with Malvern Ballet from the age of five years.

Now sixteen, she is dancing over thirty eight hours a week, all of which includes classical, contemporary, pilates and strength and conditioning classes to name a few, while still keeping up with her academic studies via correspondence.

Lisalotte has a passion for dance and aspires to dance in the Netherlands, (her mother’s

native country) for their national ballet company, in the near future. Malvern Ballet director and teacher Saba Charles commented, “we are inspired by Lisalotte’s passion and determination to go after her dreams and we’re excited to see her future unfold and wish her the very best.”

DRFC QUIZ NIGHT Darfield Rugby Football Club (DRFC) are hosting a Quiz Night in mid-August, as their major fundraiser for the year. This event with help raise vital funds to upgrade the clubroom kitchen, which is currently small, outdated and hard to work in.

DRFC was founded in 1904 and is one of the longest standing clubs in the Ellesmere Region. As a Club, their mission is to promote and provide high quality, enjoyable rugby for players of all ages and skills.

The Club is dedicated to developing and maintaining their grounds and facilities to a high standard. The clubrooms and outdoor viewing deck provide an excellent place to

watch rugby and socialise after games. Their five fields are all well upheld, providing an excellent turf to play on in all conditions, including the option of night games. The Club has had fantastic support this season with 150 juniors and 100 seniors registered, 35 social members and more than 50 registered volunteers. Also for the first time in numerous years, there is a large colts squad.

Throughout this season there has been 100 - 160 senior players catered for in a day, with only one oven! The kitchen caters for all junior and senior after match food, as well as providing the hot food that is available for supporters to

purchase. This kitchen upgrade will help create a more workable area with more appliances, making life a little easier for everyone. The clubrooms are also available for bookings throughout the year and a new kitchen will make this more appealing for groups to use.

The Club is hoping they get a large amount of support for this event, so don’t delay in purchasing your tickets early, as there are limited teams that can enter. Teams can consist of a maximum of five people and there will be some great raffles and prizes up for grabs. Supper will be provided and the bar will be open (cash or eftpos).

PIE DAY FRIDAY The North Canterbury Rural Support Trust was established to assist individuals and their families get back on their feet.

The Trust is linked into rural networks and can help people facing challenging circumstances, such as financial, personal, or climatic adverse events like drought, flood or heavy snow. In a natural disaster, the Trust is right there beside you, working with Civil Defence, the Government and emergency services on behalf of rural communities.

The Trust facilitators are local people who have themselves faced the challenges rural life can bring, and will travel to wherever they are needed.

free. If more than a cup of tea and a yarn is needed, the Trust can connect people with professionals who can provide further support, including health, mental health and counselling services.

CELEBRATE 40 YEARS OF DARFIELD ARTWEEK Celebrate 40 Years of Darfield Artweek this August at Te Huanui, with eight ‘Crowd Pleasers’ of previous exhibitions.

Popular artists Ross Fowler, Fowler Lorraine Jacobs, Georgie Jacobs Lennox, Lennox Maureen McCann, McCann Kelvin McMillan, Katrina McMillan Mitchell, Mitchell Liz Petrie and Mehrdad Tehan will feature stunning works in a range of styles, mediums and subject

matter. The exhibition Opening Night is on Friday, July 30th, which everyone is welcome to attend and runs until Thursday, August 26th.

Ross Fowler is an emerging Canterbury artist with a background as a heavy diesel mechanic. Looking for a new challenge, Ross set about looking at the possibility of making an artistically pleasing clock, different

to anything commercially available.

After a lengthy development, Ross entered Darfield Artweek in 2019, winning People’s Choice, challenging him to complete two more clocks of a more ambitious design.

Lorraine Jacobs works out of her ‘Broad View Studio’ in Darfield.

Aiming to capture some of the dramatic beauty and interest in the world around her, she creates landscapes and portraits in oils, acrylics and watercolours. For ‘Crowd Pleasers’ Lorraine has used acrylics to portray an iconic area of New Zealand – Lake McKenzie on the Routeburn Track, Fiordland.

Georgie Lennox works in oils and occasionally pencil and pastel, striving to showcase the beauty of under-appreciated everyday items.

Growing up in the Canterbury High Country, the lifestyle and the mountains are also a source of inspiration, she enjoys the mental challenge of her creative pursuits.

Maureen McCann is a self-taught artist, based in Darfield. Maureen has been painting since 2003 and is inspired by the beauty and colour of stunning New Zealand landscapes. Maureen’s work can be found in collections both in New Zealand and internationally.

Kelvin McMillan was interested in art at a young age, becoming a full

time artist by the age of twenty two, concentrating on pencil drawings, finding inspiration in derelict houses and farm buildings.

Now working in watercolours, Kelvin paints simple subjects that surround him in the vast landscapes of Canterbury and Otago.

Katrina Mitchell primarily works in oils and floral paintings are one of her main subject matters. She enjoys studying the shapes of flowers, their colour harmonies, textures and how colours shift against light, hoping her paintings bring the same joy to viewers as it does for her.

Liz Petrie is currently working in oils and is well known for her hare paintings. Liz enjoys capturing a sense of an animal’s personality, encouraging viewers to appreciate the beauty, wildness, enduring nature or simply the appeal of a hare’s individual face.

Mehrdad Tehan is a self-educated artist who has practiced traditional techniques for over 40 years.

Impressionism has had the strongest influence on his diverse range of artwork, with a focus on portraiture and landscapes, with oils and charcoals his preferred mediums.

FLOOD RELIEF FUND Selwyn residents who suffered hardship or damage to their property during the recent floods can apply to the Council for financial support.

The Council has opened the Mayoral Relief Fund for Selwyn residents affected by recent flooding, who have not been able to access other support, such as insurance or Government funding.

A funds allocation panel, including Mayor Sam Broughton and Selwyn Recovery Manager Al Lawn, Lawn will assess new applications and allocate funding through August. The fund will close once the total has been allocated.

“This is a further way for the Council to help those affected by the flooding,” Sam commented.

“Our Civil Defence teams and local volunteers did a fantastic job of looking after people during the flooding and afterwards. We have also seen Government and other agencies providing support. This fund is limited, but will support those who have suffered hardship.

“The $4million Canterbury Flood Relief Fund has also opened to support farmers through the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). If you believe you are eligible please apply,” Sam concluded.

GIVING BACK TO COMMUNITY The Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade has benefitted from 10 year old Jessica Stewart’s fundraising efforts.

Officers and members were surprised when Jessica from Sheffield Primary School arrived at their station on practice night to give the Brigade $115.00, which she had raised by collecting and selling twenty three large bags of pinecones, as part of her peak homework project.

The Brigade officers and members were very humbled by this fantastic donation, which shows great community spirit.

“Thank you very much Jessica,” commented Nev Croy, on behalf of Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade.

The Brigade are holding their Awards Night in a few weeks time at Sheffield Hall.

Nev Croy will be receiving his double gold star award as recognition of fifty years service to the Fire Brigade.

Grant Hunter will also be presented a medal for long service and good conduct.

Rochelle also likes to dance and belongs to Jolt Dance, which is a mixed-ability dance group. She has performed in many shows with Jolt and has been a part of their teacher trainee programme, now teaching her own class of students with disabilities one afternoon a week. She has also performed in schools in a programme that is a collaboration between Jolt Dance and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

She has attended self-advocacy camps with the NZDSA and would one day love to be a selfadvocate on the STRIVE group, which is a team of people with Down Syndrome who are a

members advisory and leadership group who advise and support the NZDSA board, and are ambassadors and advocates.

Congratulations Rochelle, you are a very worthy recipient!

SELWYN MP UPDATE It is very difficult trying to decide what to write about at the moment. There are just so many areas that the Government is abjectly failing to deliver on, and the harm some of its more divisive policies are causing to New Zealanders is deeply worrying.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this is the most socialist government this country has seen in half a century.

Jacinda Ardern is using her parliamentary majority to her advantage and will ram through every single vanity project that she wishes to for as long as she has this mandate, no matter how tribal or ideological.

This Government no longer bothers to deny its desire to control and centralise almost every sector of society. We on the ground will be the ones to pick up the tab!

We’ve already been told our District Health Boards (DHBs) will be disbanded and health services will be merged into a mega-authority in Wellington and the Three Waters reform is another case in point.

Just like health services, water management is complex and there is undoubtedly a need for change, but under the Government’s plans to centralise control, we ratepayers across Selwyn face losing local assets we’ve paid for over generations, while being asked to foot the bill for poorer-performing neighbours.

These reforms are poorly conceived and will result in low

accountability, bloated service entities, more bureaucracy and messy cross-subsidising between neighbouring regions. The claimed scale benefits and costsavings remain unconvincing.

This Government, unable to deliver on much else, appears to want to regulate New Zealanders in every facet of our lives.

Labour has recently moved to criminalise language that causes offence. Not content with just telling us what car we are allowed to drive, they want to restrict and regulate the words that come out of our mouths.

Let’s be clear, abhorrent language is vile and not to be condoned, but freedom of speech is a fundamental right and the use of language that incites violence is already provided for in New Zealand law.

Democracy relies on the ability of people to speak freely and, in turn, others are free to disagree.

On the topic of being told what to do on a daily basis, I really worry about the cumulative impact that totally unworkable rules and regulations are having on the welfare of our rural communities and agricultural industry. A recent report from Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler (KPMG) confirms farmer morale has slumped over the past year, mostly due to the unprecedented speed of regulatory change, as well as the appallingly shortsighted approach it is taking to Immigration policies and its point-blank refusal to allocate managed isolation and MIQ spaces to desperate farm

businesses.

The most confronting comment for me was this; “At times it felt

as though we were talking to leaders who were primarily focused on finding the strength to fight another day, rather than the energised leaders of previous years.”

With farmers having to try and do business in the context of failed immigration policies, freshwater reforms, controversial significant natural areas (SNA) rules, a pending National Policy Statement on Biodiversity, Climate Change Commission recommendations, not to mention recent weather events, it is little wonder. Each new rule brings compliance and reporting requirements and often requires a change to core business systems and does absolutely nothing to improve productivity or ease of doing business. One can only but wonder, why bother?

William Long from Kirwee, winner of the Kennedy Precision class at the South Island Free Flight Model Aircraft Championships.

The South Island Free Flight Model Aircraft Championships is held annually at the Christchurch Model Aero Club flying field, adjacent to The Willows recreation area, off Thompsons Road. The 2021 competition was held on July 24th to 25th and attracted competitors from all around New Zealand. The weather was calm and frosty on Saturday, which is ideal model flying conditions, but Sunday’s building northeast wind made for challenging conditions.

Free flight models are ‘trimmed’ to fly themselves, in this regard free flight is the purest form of aeromodelling. There are several classes of competition for model aircraft built to various specifications, ranging from traditional construction with balsa wood and tissue stressed skin construction, to high tech

carbon fibre and composite materials. Models are either powered by a miniature internal combustion engine or a loop of specially made rubber, wound with up to 2,000 plus turns to drive the propeller. Some classes are for unpowered gliders that are launched by being either thrown, catapulted, or towed.

Most classes are flight duration events, where competitors aim to keep the model airborne for the longest possible time.

Kirwee resident William Long (age 7) competed in a class called ‘Kennedy Precision’, with a model he and his dad (Julius Julius Long) Long built from scratch at home over the last four months. The model is a vintage design called ‘Simplex’, originally built in 1940, and is powered by a British PAW 0.8cc miniature diesel engine. The aim in

Kennedy Precision is to achieve three consecutive flights of two minutes duration, with points deducted for times under or over that target. William won the Kennedy Precision category with times of 2:09, 2:10 and 2:14, earning him 327 points, out of a possible maximum of 360 points.

years, with twenty one competitors entered.

The weather was lovely and the ground was in ideal condition for ploughing, with good moisture levels.

To the Editor: Did the Selwyn Mayor attend the Groundswell protest at Darfield?

To the Editor: I was unable to attend the Groundswell event in Darfield as I was at a local Government conference in Blenheim. However, I want to acknowledge the many pressures on our agricultural community that have been brought about by legislative changes over the past decade. Agriculture is a mainstay of the economy in Selwyn and the financial welfare and wellbeing of our farming community is important to me and our Council. At the same time, like our farmers, I have a passion for the environment and want to see sustainable practices in place, that will allow the sector to remain profitable while preserving the land for the generations to follow.

Finding the right balance is challenging. The protest sent a clear message to the Government, that they must work harder at listening to the farming community when they develop policies that affect them and I support a collaborative approach, which includes our environmental champions, as we move forward.

Finally, I want to say a big thank you to all those who protested respectfully while supporting the local eateries in town.

To the Editor: ‘Waddington Cemetery Fence’.

The original fence at Waddington Cemetery was erected and paid for in 1972, by the Sheffield Young Farmers. Godfrey Judd was President, it was his project. The

fence consisted of concrete posts with pipe rail along the top and chain diamond mesh.

Last month, I was disheartened to see that the Selwyn District Council had demolished this fence, which was still in good condition and replaced it with wooden posts and rail. During the time the old fence was dismantled and the new fence was erected a temporary fence was installed.

My questions are: Who from the Council authorised the removal of a perfectly good fence from Waddington Cemetery? What was the cost of the removal of the old fence, the cost of the temporary fence, the cost of planning and the cost of the new fence?

In my opinion, this exercise not only wasted ratepayers money once again, it was completely disrespectful to Godfrey, his project and the Sheffield Young Farmers that had put voluntary hours into doing something for our community that we could be proud of. I request a reply.

To the Editor: Significant damage has been done to the Church of the Open Door at Te Pirita, with five windows broken, two wooden crosses wrenched of the wall and stolen, as well as a painting stolen.

A police report has been made.

The Church has recently been listed in the Selwyn District Plan as a Historic building.

DRFC DIVISION ONE REPORT Last Saturday saw the Ducks head back to Prebbleton for the second v third Coleman Shield semi-final. Having lost to Prebbleton two weeks prior the team was wanting to start well and build pressure on the home side. Fine weather greeted us again and we had the challenge of playing into a steady noreaster in the first half.

The game started well for us, with Prebbleton gifting numerous penalties enabling us to march down the field. The pressure told on Prebbleton when following a ruck, Ben Alexander crashed over in the left hand corner. Any time Prebbleton had inside our own half was minimal, as good defence and poor handling saw them turn the ball over. Further penalties saw Darfield again able to build pressure deep inside Prebbleton's half. Following another penalty, the ball was kicked out for a lineout a few metres from the Prebbleton line, good clean ball enabled Darfield to set up a drive and once again, Greg Dunshea was the beneficiary, diving over for a try.

Three minutes later, another lineout drive saw Ben cross the line for his second try, Darfield up 15-0 after twenty five minutes.

Unfortunately, the Prebbleton sides stuttering attack began to find its mojo. Wave after wave crashed into the Darfield defence, this told soon after when they managed to score two tries in quick succession. The momentum had well and truly swung and Prebbleton had their tails up at the halftime break, Darfield leading by a solitary point, 1514.

Turning with the breeze, we wanted to use it to our advantage and make Prebbleton have to work their way out from deep inside their territory.

However, Prebbleton were up to this task and managed to hold the pill for phase after phase, before crossing for another converted try four minutes into the half. At the restart, the wind then proved beneficial for Prebbleton, with the ball going dead in goal. Following the scrum on halfway, Prebbleton worked their way towards Darfield's line, crossing it again

shortly after for another converted try.

Prebbleton up 28-15, having scored 28 unanswered points in only twenty minutes of play.

Despite the momentum firmly being in Prebbleton's favour, Darfield showed their fighting spirit and refused to give up.

Finally managing to get some valuable possession, they began to attack in earnest. Prebbleton's defence held for a while but following a quickly taken penalty tap kick, Ben Alexander crossed the line again for his third try, to set up a tense finish. Prebbleton leading 28-22 with ten minutes of play left. Unfortunately, Darfield couldn't find the knockout blow, coming close on occasion but ultimately Prebbleton's defence held strong.

Disappointing to not make it through to the final, however one celebration was able to be held though, with front row stalwart John Frew bringing up his 100th game for Division One. He brings a lot to this team and the Club as a whole, so this

achievement was richly deserved.

The presentation may have been made at Prebbleton but as always, thanks to our supporters for coming along and making themselves heard.

Unfortunately, Division Two also lost to BDI in their semi-final, but it was great to have them in playoff footy again after a three year wait. Also very pleasing for us was the reestablishment of a Colts side, great to have them back in the Club.

Finally, thanks to everyone who has made it possible for these sides to take to the field week in and week out. Be it coaches, managers, players, partners, Darfield Rugby Football Club committee members, volunteers and sponsors, without you none of this could happen. See you next season.

The job specifically includes: Generally two days a week (Fri & Sat) 4-6 hours per day, on an as & when basis $25 per hour. NB Week is shared between two people - providing cover for leave. Majority of work is in mornings but during busy periods longer hours / more days may be required.

Preparing (hot) midday meal, driving/accompanying to Rolleston/ Christchurch for groceries/appointments. Help with garden & orchard.

Help with technology e.g. when smart phones are too smart!
