Darfield Groundswell NZ ‘Howl of a Protest’ Protest’ - 16th July 2021 Approximately sixty locations in New Zealand were involved with the Groundswell NZ Protest, last Friday due to the fact that many in the rural sector have had enough of the mounting regulations on water, the environment, biodiversity, climate change, workforce and now the ‘ute tax’. At the core of the protest are seven demands relating to specific Government policies and regulations, that farmers either want scrapped or re-written. The Groundswell group, which is made up of volunteers, is protesting against what it says are unworkable regulations the Government has introduced in the farming sector, which have flow on effects right through the community. People met in their neighbouring townships before convoying in droves, to Darfield where it was estimated to have been over 150 tractors in attendance and just as many utes. Darfield township businesses effectively closed their doors on Friday, July 16th, as owners and staff joined the farmers, growers,

tradies, ute owners and many others that supported the protest, as approximately 1500 people, walked from each end of the Main Street, to meet in the middle between Farmlands and Gnomes Ski Shop. The crowd was up to six times larger that the organisers could have imagined. Derek Bull, John Ridgen Bull and Tom Ferguson along with Hamish Thorne, Thorne Murray

Rowlands and Paul Wright were all very instrumental in organising the local event, with Heather and Janelle Taege, Taege along with others, dedicating a lot of time to ring around and hand out information leading up to the day. Derek was the opening speaker and commented “We are being rail-roaded into unconsulted regulations and bureaucracy that

is applying unrecoverable costs on us by pen-pushing people in Wellington, all administered by inexperienced officials in councils driving about in new diesel Rangers, soon to be replaced by unrecyclable battery cars powered by imported Indonesian coal, as will be the case with most government departments!"

ASHY BATCHELOR Ex Whitecliffs resident, Ashy Batchelor, Batchelor has been busy on the music scene recently with live shows. She started the year off playing at Electric Avenue and more recently she played at the Ngaio Marsh Theatre opening for the Harper Finn and LA Women New Zealand tour. Ashy is an independent, selfmanaged artist. She didn’t grow up in a musical family, but there was always music playing at home, or in the car. She started her music career straight after ﬁnishing high school, as she knew what kind of artist she wanted to become and was always writing songs. Many readers will remember her from performances at events locally and in more recent times, the stages of Christmas in the Park and X Factor. “I have been involved in numerous collaboration and songwriting weeks this year. The ﬁrst being at the Christchurch Arts Centre working alongside and mentored by Tami Neilson, Neilson

Troy Kingi, Kingi Julia Deans, Deans Jol Mulholland and Delaney Davidson,” Davidson commented Ashy. “I have also recently returned from a week at Roundhead Studios, in Auckland where I attended a great workshop for songwriters and composers working with the likes of Sam Trevethick from Shapeshifter. “I have some new music coming out soon, this is a project that I worked on with several other kiwi talents. I’m very excited and I can’t wait to share it with my fans,” Ashy concluded.

She will also be playing at the ‘Go Live Festival’, which is being held at the Christchurch Town Hall this weekend. Ashy is super excited to have a full band for the Festival and can’t wait to perform. The ‘Go Live Festival’ will have over sixteen emerging and established Christchurch artists, playing live across ﬁve stages, which will showcase a range of genres, from alternative through to rock and pop. MCAC AWARDS JUNIOR GRANT The Malvern Community Arts Council (MCAC) is pleased to announce the first recipient, of ten junior grants of $100, to be awarded for a first-time tuition ‘start up’ allowance. Patricia Galler, Galler a Year 4 student at Hororata Primary School, received the certificate recognising her successful application on Friday, July 16th, at Te Huanui Art Gallery, in Darfield. “We were very impressed with Patricia’s hand-written application”, said Philip Baldwin, Baldwin Chair of the Malvern Community Arts Council. “She obviously took some time to prepare her application and express her love of art and her desire to learn more about becoming a better artist,” Philip concluded. Due to the low rate of applications, MCAC has extended the deadline for applications until Friday, August 20th, 2021. Criteria for applicants: • You must choose an arts discipline that you are not currently taking tuition for. For

example: music, drama, dance, art. • This will be your choice and if you are successful with your application, we expect that you will continue to take lessons for at least one term. • You must have identiﬁed a teacher, the cost of the lessons and any materials and the availability of lessons. • You must currently be in school Year groups 4 to 8 inclusive. • Your parent/guardian must conﬁrm their support for the

application and be prepared to pay additional course fees beyond the $100 allowance. • You must be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand, living within the boundaries of the Malvern District. WEST SIDE STORY Kirwee Players are performanceready for one of their most challenging and dramatic shows onstage - West Side Story. The show will be performed at the Kirwee Community Hall, from August 6th to 14th, and features lots of local talent in the cast, ranging in age from school children to retirees. West Side Story is a complex and at times, terrifying portrayal of interracial clashes, based on Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Fear not, this show is not all doom and gloom. It has an equal measure of comedy with ‘Gee Officer Krupke’ (Paul Paul McIntosh aka Macca) and an insight into the vibrant Puerto Rican culture of the time through ‘Mambo’. Tony (Brock Brock Cottrell) Cottrell and Maria (Lara Lara Chiswell/Yasmin Chiswell Yasmin Marsh) Marsh are a pair of love torn teens trying to overcome the barriers between their cultures, set in urban New York City during the

1950’s. Tony is a member of the notorious Jets, a gang of immigrant Americans of European origin, who consistently clash with the Sharks, a gang of Puerto Rican immigrants. The director of the show, Julian Anderson acknowledges the difficulties he has faced having a show which originally was cast in February 2020, stopped by Covid 19, then picked up again to ﬁnally be performed eighteen months later. Like all things, life changes and some of the cast and creative team have changed since the beginning. The cast is guided by the talented Benjamin McKellar as musical director, with Charlotte Wu accompanying on the piano. The music is well known, catchy and superbly written by Leonard Bernstein, Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim Haunting songs like ‘Maria’, ‘One

Hand’, ‘One Heart’ and ‘Somewhere’ are sure to tug on even the hardest of hearts, and the upbeat America, ‘I’m So Pretty’ and ‘Jet Song’ will have you toe-tapping along. The vocal harmonies are well balanced and the audience is in for a treat. Anna Randall and Melody Hoglund have stretched every muscle group of the cast, with dancing in the high-energy numbers choreographed to equally entertain and shock you. The skill and coordination the cast have achieved, will thrill you long after the ﬁnal curtain has closed. To the Editor: Water Reforms. The Government has offered $2.5 billion of taxpayer money to induce Councils to opt into their ideologically driven water reforms. $22.5 million will be our districts’ cut. This, according to our Mayor, is equivalent to what was spent last year on our excellent drinking water system, with future funding accounted for in the 10 year plan. The inducement seems minimal for losing all water and asset rights and putting ratepayers in an impossible negotiating position. Once in, the assets which ratepayers have developed over many years are gone forever, including any rights to water associated with same. The cost to taxpayers of setting up and implementing these particular reforms is understood to be $3.55 billion, including the inducement. There are many questions to be asked and be answered with these reforms including compensation, the overall ownership model for both water and physical assets and if Council has any mandate from ratepayers to divest the assets. The Council needs to start communicating the hard facts to ratepayers now, before

the democratic process gets completely usurped. If the Government is claiming the deal is so good, then we will expect an immediate and substantial decrease in our rates bill.

Rebecca will be adding a monthly writeup in the Malvern News, on topics affecting Landlords and Tenants, or the general rental market.

UNDERSTAND YOUR WATERWORKS I found myself saying this week “I hate water!” I immediately felt bad for saying it! I know that it is the lifeforce around which we all revolve. I understand we need it to live, but honestly…This week….This month… This quarter! I am over it! And I rest easy knowing I am not alone. There are some events we have no control over, the horrendous flooding and unprecedented downpours. We need to band together, help our fellow man and inevitably as heart-wrenching as these events are, they do bring out the best in most of us, as we rally around those affected and lend a hand. However, the day to day plumbing, or lack of, is a different story. We want and need our plumbing to be up and running, to this point I think our go-to plumber is the main tradie to receive the “sorry its night time but….” call. In this past month when resources have been stretched, I have learnt more about plumbing, drainage and leaks than ever before in my life. I think I would be right in concluding, that for all the fears landlords have about problem tenants, pets etc (Thank you Renters!) far more money will be spent on leaks and the damage caused, from pipes, roof and guttering. What I have learnt is valuable for all people to have a basic understanding of, (landlords, tenants and homeowners). In our area, most of our waste goes through our septic tank and the general water such as bath, shower etc goes out to a soaker pit. But what happens when the pit becomes full? Is that even possible? We are surrounded by riverbeds and such, and the idea of the ground being full did not even occur to me. So in the event of massive rain falls, we need to be careful and send out only what we have to, or our septic system will be put under pressure and the wastewater will come back up the drain. Speaking of septics, they are a precious concoction of good bacteria and as such, we need to look after them. Non-harsh chemicals or detergents and toilet paper (but not too much) are the only things, other than the obvious, which should head down there. Clean your gutters (or employ a professional to do so), the build-up of debris in your gutter will cause rainwater to backflow into your eaves and inevitably make its way into your roof cavity. Last, but certainly not least, carry out a regular check of your pipes, under your sinks and your hot water cylinder if you have one. Those small leaks add up pretty quickly and if caught in time, can save a whole lot of time and money, and goodness knows we all need more of both! PROPERTY MANAGEMENT In November 2020, professional agencies managed 42% of the bonds lodged within the bond centre. Based on that statistic, it shows us that 58% of rental properties are still managed privately by landlords in New Zealand. Although it is not a legal requirement to lodge a bond, this statistic provides excellent insight into the industry's current state. New Zealand currently has approximately 2,100 professional property managers and this number is also growing rapidly. In 2019, agencies managed 32-35% of rental properties in the country, so in the space of 18 months, roughly 55,000 properties have shifted from private to professional management. We believe this is a growing trend that will continue in the years ahead. Looking to our neighbours across the ditch, the numbers are entirely reversed, with agencies managing approximately 90% of rental properties. For years, many commentators have pointed out that New Zealand has trailed behind Australia in this respect, due to the regulation and licensing regimes across the

different states. With the exception of accountability, the markets are very similar. Once the New Zealand Government introduces a regulatory body and licensing regime for the industry, we see no reason New Zealand won’t eventually be comparable to Australia. Even without regulation, the industry is becoming increasingly specialised. From the growing trend of private to professional management, we can see that the increasingly litigious environment is taking a toll on the private sector. Around New Zealand, roughly 80 -85% of purchasers are owneroccupiers. Since the Government's proposed tax scheme was released in March 2021, investors have paused for a period to take stock of these potential new laws. However, we have not seen a mass exodus of landlords as some may have expected and by in large, the rental pool has stayed roughly the same. If passed in October 2021, the tax reforms will be grandfathered in for rental properties purchased before March 2021 and investors know they need to lift rents to offset the new tax. Once again, we are sensing that a recent surge in management enquiry is from owners that are needing specialist management

and professional guidance to do this fairly and legally. When you look at all the factors and pressure points, the national trend of private owners engaging professional property managers is only going to continue. If and when the industry becomes regulated, we estimate that by 2030, the vast majority of rental properties in New Zealand will be professionally managed. Any professional agency worth their salt advocates for a greater level of accountability across the sector. hill which looks over the Waimakariri River and you can sometimes hear the magniﬁcent sounds of jet boats and watch the water whooshing down the river. At about half way of the trek you have a 5 minute break to have a quick walk around, stretch, look at the beautiful scenery, take some photos and enjoy the amazing views. When you get back on your horse there are a couple of challenging hills to complete along with some tricky manoeuvres. When you’re riding on the roadside or on narrow tracks, you have to keep in single ﬁle and in paddocks stay 15 metres apart when your next to each other. At the water crossings you hopefully don’t have a very short horse, otherwise you might get a little wet (and the water is

pretty cold). A couple of the horses are faster than others because they are ex race horses. At some of the corners you have to go up steep hills and do sharp turns at the same time. If you are doing very well, Chris will tell you to close your eyes and let go of the reins while going downhill which is nerve-racking, but fun! Back at the stables you wait for Chris to help you off your horse and when you start walking around, you realise your bum is stiff and sore. I rate Rubicon Valley Horse Treks a 10/10 and I deﬁnitely recommend going to have some fun and laughter. By Abbi Moore.

At the start of the holidays I went to Rubicon Valley Horse Treks in Springﬁeld with some friends. After being given our horses we started on our two hour adventure. We headed off walking on the grass alongside the road before going through paddocks, up hills, down hills, through water and under trees. When you are walking through some of the paddocks you can also trot and canter if you want to challenge yourself - but it is safer to walk. One paddock takes you up to a

DEADLINE - FRIDAY 23RD JULY

Darfield families embraced a new KidsFest venture these school holidays. Over fifty people shopped at ten stalls of second hand goods, art and crafts, run by Malvern children, for the first Selwyn Kids’ Arts and Crafts Market held at the Darfield Recreation Centre, on Tuesday, July 13th. Council Events coordinator Cristene TrenuelaTrenuela - Chan said, “The Council was delighted with the turn out for the first time event.” “There was a great atmosphere, with lots of people attending so we’re really pleased with how it went. We’ve expanded to try and get more events in Malvern for KidsFest this year and we look

forward to growing these events further. It’s good to see children and adults embracing that and having a great time,” Cristene concluded. Hot food and drinks were also on sale alongside the stalls, which gave young people an

opportunity to earn some cash or find a pre-loved treasure. Other first time KidsFest events that came to Darfield this year, included a ‘MovieMania’ showing the movie Samsam on Thursday, July 22nd and a ‘DiscoMania’ on Friday, July 23rd.

LESSONS - GLOBAL PANDEMICS U3A Malvern’s July speaker was Lance Jennings, Jennings talking on ‘The Global Pandemic, What Are The Lessons?’ The Club was indeed honoured to have the expertise of not only a national and internationally respected clinical virologist, but an internationally recognised speaker as well. Lance presented a comprehensive and informative speech, that covered historic pandemics, the various types and how they entered our human sphere. He focused on the bigger picture: • Infectious diseases, their global burden, viral emerging diseases, and how they emerge as well as their pandemic potential. • Lessons learnt from History - the importance of understanding the natural ecology of viruses. • Lessons from previous pandemics - 1918 ‘Spanish’ ﬂu, New Zealand’s worse disease outbreak. Also from other novel coronaviruses Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). • Understanding transmission and control measures, including vaccines. • The interconnection of disease - all living things can be involved in the passage of infection from one to another, eg: Legionnaire’s disease is transmitted from potting mix, Covid-19 thought to have originated from bats. • The fundamental characteristics of microbes that allow them to circumvent our control of

them is that human generations take approximately twenty years to replicate, while microbes take minutes, allowing rapid mutation and evolution. International cooperation and control: Infection knows no boundaries. Partnerships between industry, Governments and academia are essential to maintain our struggle to outwit infections that pose a never-ending threat to mankind. As well, individuals need to play their part to help control the spread of infectious diseases by respecting legitimate information and when appropriate, accept vaccination. MULLET BE GONE! Nigel Williams from West Melton is currently raising much needed funds for the SPCA, by shaving off the mullet he has been sporting for some time (some would say shaving it off is well overdue). The SPCA is a charity that helps protect over 35,000 sick, injured, abused or simply abandoned animals in New Zealand every year. These vital funds will help them continue their fantastic work. Nigel has set up a give-a-little page for people to donate. If he gets to $1,000 he will get a haircut - mullet be gone, $2,500 he will shave off his beard and get a haircut - beard and mullet gone, $5,000 he will shave his face and head everything gone! “The fundraiser will close on July 31st as on that date in 1971, men rode in a vehicle on the moon for the first time in a lunar rover vehicle (LRV). It's also the year I was born and could be the first time I've ever been without hair, a first for mankind and a first for me!” Nigel commented.

HORORATA MECHANICAL SWAP MEET In 2010 two local Hororata blokes, John Foster and Dave Pomare got fed up with searching for mechanical parts in amongst household goods at swap meets. They decided the easiest way around this problem was to create their own event, so over a couple of beers, the Hororata Mechanical Swap Meet was born and has been run each September up until 2019, with the 2021 event also set for the same time, later this year. John Foster explains, “It doesn’t matter if it is parts for motorbikes, cars, machinery, vintage or modern, even tools are ok, as long as they have a mechanical purpose. We don’t

want soft toys, lampshades or pots and pans, no household goods.” “Dave and I have enjoyed running this event and staying true to our vision. We did not run our event in 2020 due to the threat of COVID-19 but also because it is getting hard for us to run it. We are not an entity and when we have to start ﬁlling in pages of forms, get public liability insurance, health and safety documents and other regulatory requirements it is simply too hard. “We didn’t want to see the event die because we were drowning in regulations. So, we approached the Hororata Community Trust to

Held in the Hororata Domain the event attracts about fifty sellers on the day with 500 – 800 visitors. The event makes donations to local groups who help on the day. “The Swap Meet is part of the fabric of our community. It meets a need by providing a trading opportunity for those interested in mechanical items, it brings people together and has a financial benefit for our community. When John approached the Trust to help it was a no-brainer, we have to keep this event going. The only proviso is that John and Dave stay involved for a few more years,” said Hororata Community Trust Chair, Richard Lang. Lang “The Hororata Domain is a fabulous venue for this event, there is plenty of space, we don’t have to worry about working around sports and we can easily manage the flow of people. The Swap Meet is another great event for Hororata. DIVISION ONE REPORT Last Saturday saw Darfield head to Waihora, with the playoff equation front of mind. Win with a four-try bonus point and we were guaranteed a semi-final spot. Thankfully, the rain that plagued the foothills hadn't made too much of an impact and a warm fine day helped our chances of scoring enough tries. The game started with a hiss and a roar, with Darfield on the attack right from the start. An early advantage from a Waihora infringement saw Alister Collins put in a chip kick, which Sheldon Reed grabbed to score the opening try in the first minute. Good interplay between the forwards saw Darfield again march down the field, this time a good short ball saw Geoff Cridge breakthrough to score next to the uprights, Darfield up 14-0 after ten minutes. Waihora then managed to start stringing a few phases together and tried to stretch Darfield's defensive line. We managed to hold them out until conceding a penalty just before the half hour mark. Straight after the restart, good quick play saw their winger dot down in the right hand corner. They scored again four minutes later and it was now Darfield's turn to trail on the scoreboard, down 15-14 at the break. A penalty early in the second half saw them extend the lead further to 18-14. This is when Darfield's set piece began to turn the momentum. A penalty inside Darfield's half was kicked into touch on Waihora's 22. From the resulting lineout a well worked set play saw Geoff Cridge break down the sideline with only their winger in front of him, he was unable to stop him and Geoff scored his second try. Darfield back in front 19-18. Once again Waihora fought back, and when their number eight scored five minutes later, Darfield were down 25-19, with still twenty five minutes left. We began to gain more possession and threaten their defence, leaving them to infringe

and gifting us easy metres down the park through penalties. A lineout inside Waihora's 22 saw Darfield maul it and Greg Dunshea picked up a try, as they pushed Waihora over their goal line. The gap closed to one point with one quarter remaining. A penalty goal eight minutes later from Alister had Darfield back in front. Another lineout inside Waihora's 22 saw Darfield once again drive from it. Aided by a few backs joining in, Waihora were pushed back, with Greg once again the beneficiary scoring his second try. Alister slotted the conversion from 15 metres in, and Darfield had a nine point lead with only a couple of minutes remaining. We managed to hold onto the ball from the restart to wind the clock down and close out the game. Darfield winning 34-25,

In the four years since its inception, Darfield had never won it, so it meant a lot to the team to be able to bring this back to Darfield for the summer. This weekend Darfield heads to Prebbleton, to take them on again in a semi-final.
