COMMUNITY COMMITTEES UPDATE Following on from the ‘Community Committees’ piece published on June 18th, this is a further update to help clarify the situation a bit more. When the committees are disestablished the Council will take responsibility for all the functions of those committees, however, we will work with the members of those committees and the wider community on continued roles that they may have as part of that. Committees may also see that there are continued roles that they can take on as private citizen groups that would be beneﬁcial to the community. The Council will be responsible for planning, decision making, controlling and supervising processes associated with the operational management of community centres, reserves or pools. There are a range of tasks associated with operational delivery that the Council will appreciate volunteers’

continuing to undertake and some tasks that Council will need to undertake itself. Decisions regarding which tasks can be taken on by volunteers will depend, to some degree, on the nature of the task, the facility and the volunteers themselves and will be part of our discussions with the committees before they are discharged. Some examples are: • In some instances, volunteers have wanted to show interested hirers through a hall and this has generally been happily accepted by the Council in agreements. • In some instances, user sports groups have responsibility for marking outlines for a sports ﬁeld and the Council expects this will continue. In the past, the various committees have operated quite differently from each other, because of this, what roles are taken on in the future may be different from

committee to committee as one answer will not make sense to all committees. Several centres or hall committees have already entered into agreements with Council that specify mutually agreed tasks and responsibilities. These agreements will be reviewed, however, the intent is still to enter into agreements with volunteers in a similar fashion. The Council intends to keep in touch directly with user groups and clubs in the future. In some instances, these relationships are already taking place directly with Council. In other situations, committees have taken the role of representing some user group interests to the Council. SELWYN WINTER FESTIVAL Following on from the successful Selwyn Wine and Beer Festival in February, the team are now hosting a Selwyn Winter Festival on Saturday, July 24th. The Festival is being produced by a team of local business owners and entrepreneurs, who have extensive experience in events. They have pooled their knowledge and talents together, to create an event that will support other local businesses and give the community a great

afternoon out. The Festival will be hosting four craft breweries, six wineries and seven whisky distilleries on the day, as well as delicious food options. People will be entertained by quality local bands or they can relax in the themed IU Signage Whisky Lounge, listening to solo acoustic acts. “We have all the main components needed between us required to make a great Festival, a location (Larcomb Vineyard), marquees and hire equipment (Happy Hire) and design and marketing (Quill and Arrow Collective). Not to mention the rapport with vendors (Wine Divine), along with other willing and eager wineries, breweries and distilleries,” said Olivia Andrews, Andrews Director of Quill and Arrow Collective, a creative design agency based in Rolleston.

“Each ticket holder on the day has the opportunity to sample craft beer, gorgeous wines and a selection of whisky from New Zealand and around the world,” commented Tom of Larcomb Vineyard. “Thanks to our festival partner Hundy, you’ll also be given something to take home to help with any after effects of a few drinks,” Tom concluded. “We’re also thankful to the Selwyn District Council for their added support with a funding grant. The team hope that this winter addition is also a success, so it becomes an annual festival for Selwyn. It’s nice to be able to enjoy something, even during the colder months of the year when we tend to retreat from the outdoors. Winter doesn’t need to be anti-social,” Olivia concluded. GET CREATIVE In May, Lincoln Envirotown Trust announced two exciting and fun competitions, which will challenge people to use their creative skills highlighting environmental issues. With the school holidays commencing it’s the perfect time to get inspired by the environment and consider entering the competitions. Focus for Future Environmental Short Film Competition, has taken place annually for many years and remains very popular. “Each year there are many different aspects of people’s environmental concerns shown in short ﬁlms, designed to stimulate people to take action,” commented Dave Fitzjohn, Fitzjohn the Project Manager for Lincoln Envirotown. People are encouraged to be as creative as they like, using a combination of animation, video or slides to carry their environmental message. The competition is open to everyone and attracts both groups and individuals of all ages, including childcare centres, schools, individuals, or groups. Entries should be completed by early September, with the ﬁlm viewing and ‘Oscar-like’ Awards

evening taking place on September 24th. Last year the Awards were opened with an introduction from an overseas entrant, before attendees viewed their film. There are category prizes, as well as the overall Kea Trophy for the best film of the year. Selwyn Waste Art Competition was instigated at the request of a local business, that has also provided generous prize money. Entrants must work individually or in pairs to create art pieces, which must be made from used items that would have likely gone to landfill. It is open to all high school

students who attend schools in the Selwyn District, or high school aged children who are homeschooled in the area. Judging will take place in August and the intention is to publicly display many of the pieces. “We hope people will enjoy participating in these thoughtprovoking competitions and look forward to seeing the creativity and concerns that they will generate,” concluded Dave. BARBEQUE TRAILER DONATION Darﬁeld PGG Wrightson Real Estate team members, Mark Terry and Karen Hennessy have recently gifted $500 from the proceeds of their community barbeque trailer to the Hororata Golf Club, for assistance with repairing the course after the recent ﬂoods. The river went through the area causing a substantial amount of damage. Earlier this year Mark and Karen had a barbeque trailer (designed and built) with the Selwyn and Waimakariri communities in mind. The trailer is available for hire to anyone in the district -

including clubs, individuals, companies to be used at ﬁeld days, shows, sports events etc. Bookings for the trailer must be made via Mark or Karen. When hiring the trailer, a donation is to be made and the funds accumulated from these bookings will then be distributed back into the local community on a regular basis. The more the trailer is utilised, the more Mark and Karen can donate back into the area. Hororata Golf Club was the ﬁrst recipient of a donation from the trailer. “We are very humbled by

this contribution, as well as numerous others the Club has received. The Club has had a huge amount of support and help with the clean up recently. A huge thank you to everyone who has helped in anyway with getting the course up and running again,” commented Nicky Muir, Muir President of the Hororata Golf Club. SELWYN MP UPDATE Immigration is by far the number one issue people come to my office for help with. Since the border closures over a year ago, members of our community have been left bereft by a system that has shown no ﬂexibility, only callousness. I have written countless letters to the Government on behalf of people seeking emergency spots in managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) for compassionate reasons, often in an attempt to spend days or hours with dying relatives, for migrants wanting to reunite their families, migrants wanting to extend rapidly-expiring visas to stay here and work, or on behalf of businesspeople desperate for migrant workers and all have fallen on deaf ears. The Government’s stonewalling on this is simply not good enough. Right now our migrants have no reason to believe the Government cares whether they stay in New Zealand, or leave. Since our border closed a year ago, many of our temporary visa holders have had their

lives thrown into turmoil and our critical workers, people we invited here to nurse our elderly and teach in our children’s classrooms, are being kept apart from their families. Kiwi businesses already hurt by Covid-19 have lost vital, highlyspecialised workers who had no option but to return to their families, because their partners and children couldn’t join them. Equally, virtually every industry across New Zealand is screaming out for migrant workers, whether skilled or unskilled they cannot get them into the country. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 9,000 unused MIQ rooms that could have been better utilised. National has raised a petition seeking 12.5% of MIQ beds to be allocated to support the Agri sector, to address the labour shortage. Spearheaded by our Immigration spokesperson, Erica Stanford, Stanford the National Party called for Parliament’s Education and Workforce Select Committee to open an inquiry into the migrant issues created by Covid-19 and

New Zealand’s closed border, as well as Immigration New Zealand’s policy settings and rules. This was vetoed by Labour. Many of our migrants have had their lives upended by our closed border and the Government’s inaction is eroding our critical migrant workforce and damaging New Zealand’s reputation abroad. Erica Stanford has gone into bat for thousands of migrants around New Zealand and she has kindly agreed to come to Rolleston, to hear how government settings are impacting the Selwyn region. FAMILY FUN NIGHTS Last weekend over thirty people enjoyed fun for all ages at two family fun nights held in Springﬁeld and Hororata. The fun nights, run by the Council, saw families enjoying everything from indoor bowls and table tennis, to board games, puzzles, toys and arts and crafts. The Council has now run four fun nights in the Malvern area over the past month, organised by the Council’s Malvern Wide Facilities Caretakers Fleur Earl and Rachael Koppe. Koppe The idea came after talking with people within these communities about the types of events they would like to see held at the halls. “The evenings had a great family atmosphere with a mixture of events for people from age 2-50+ and people enjoyed catching up while

having fun. “Indoor bowls sessions by bowlers from Glentunnel and Springﬁeld were particularly popular, especially with the children and there were some that had a real knack for it,” Fleur commented. “Towards the end, the kids in Hororata were batting balloons to each other and dancing to the music. Numerous people that attended commented that they would be keen to invite friends if we held them again,”

Fleur added. “The Council will take some time to consider the feedback from the evenings and other community engagement to plan more events, but more family fun nights are deﬁnitely being considered,” Fleur concluded.

CHAIRS FOR HERITAGE The Selwyn Heritage Centre is fundraising to continue the development of the museum at Leeston, by proposing an art-based project around the iconic stack-a-chair. The inspiration behind this idea came from the ‘Christchurch has giraffes’ and ‘Christchurch has penguins’ Art Trails, so organisers thought why can’t Selwyn have chairs. Since the 1960’s, these chairs have been a familiar sight in many halls and classrooms around New Zealand. The Trust invites all artists and craft people to work as individuals or group, to turn these chairs into works of art. Your imagination will help you create a masterpiece using anything from painting to sculpture, felting to patchwork. This idea will provide an artistic experience for the community, while also reflecting the ideals of museums by preserving and upcycling. Once chairs are completed they will be displayed around the district

in businesses and community areas, before being auctioned at a fundraising event with the proceeds going to the Selwyn Heritage Centre, for planning and project management in the refurbishing of the existing Leeston building. In order to get bales of wool to the loft for storage, a windlass (built into the rafters) is used. A large wooden wheel 1.2 metres in diameter is on the end of a round wooden beam 200mm in diameter. Around the big wheel is an endless rope that comes down to the ground ﬂoor. A large hook is attached to a long rope which is wound round the beam.

After being pressed on the ground ﬂoor, the bale of wool is placed beneath the windlass with a rope strop round it. The hook is attached to the bale strop and one young man can lift the bale of 150kg or more by pulling on the endless rope. The bale is lifted through two hinged doors in the ﬂoor of the loft. These close, the bale is lowered and then taken by sack barrow to be weighed, branded and stored. There is a photo of Sir John Hall’s Hall clip in Cathedral Square In 1895. It was used for advertising purposes for Maclaren Traction Engines. Thirty bales were on each wagon. One may think that the 240 bales were pulled at the same time. However in the

station journal is noted: January 29 ‘traction took 120 bales’ and the next day the same entry. They had all been stored in the huge loft. Work continues on the restoration of this magnificent building; the electric engine has been reinstated and connected to the Wolseley machine and shafting, with four stands as a display. The Boss was formed in 2017 and after two years of rigorous development, the show first performed in 2019. To the Editor: Those of you who cross the Selwyn River on Bealey Road would have noticed over the years, how much gorse and broom have grown in the river bed. ECan has done nothing to control this. The last ﬂood has cleaned out a lot of this rubbish. I would like to know if anyone has photos of the river bed from the 1940’s to 50’s, when the river bed was a wide-open expanse of shingle. DIVISION ONE RUGBY REPORT Last Saturday saw the Ducks host Lincoln in what was Darfield's last home game in the round-robin. This was going to be a step up in opposition again from the previous game and the beginning of a tough three week run to end the round. Lincoln had beaten one team above us and drawn with another, so they were going to be no easybeats. Thankfully, once again the weather was near perfect and as normal the field was immaculate. The game started as a bit of an arm wrestle, with both sides having periods of dominance, but being thwarted by either strong defence or their own mistakes. This period was ended when Darfield capitalised on some forward dominance, to set up a rolling maul and Ben Alexander dove over for a five pointer. The game opened up a bit then, with some strong forward carries and offloads enabling Darfield to get in behind the Lincoln defence and have them scrambling. Geoff Cridge, Cridge the recipient this time, at the end of a sweeping team play, scored next to the posts. Darfield up 12-0 after 20 minutes. Shortly

after, first five, Toby Kars crossed the chalk following a scrum on Lincoln’s five metre line, to further increase the lead. The next try, 7 minutes later, got arguably the biggest cheer of the day, with halfback Lance Meikle playing in his 50th game for Division One, collecting a kick through just inside Lincoln's 22 and skinning the cover defence to score in the right hand corner. Lincoln managed to score a try right on halftime, to head into the break with Darfield up 24-7. The second half began much the same as the first, with both sides unable to score inside the opening 15 minutes. This deadlock was broken by Darfield once again, with Alister Collins scoring an outstanding individual try. He managed to repeat this again 13 minutes later, with another individual effort to have Darfield comfortably up 36-7 with 10 minutes remaining. Lincoln grabbed a consolation try shortly after to close out the scoring. Darfield winning 36-12 and picking up a valuable 5 points, to leave them in fourth spot on the table. The next two weeks

the team will play away against Prebbleton, then Waihora, both sides sitting above us on the table. The team will be gunning to win these last two and hopefully secure a home semi ﬁnal spot. Congratulations to the Division Two team, who beat a strong second placed BDI side, moving to third in their competition with two weeks also remaining for them to secure a semi ﬁnal spot as well.
