On Sunday, June 21st, the Bridge to Bridge North event took place on the Northern Bank of the Waimakariri River. Local Steve Roberts competed in the 60km Mountain Bike Race, placing fourth overall with a time of 1:40:23 and won the Male 40 - 49 Years section. “The race was full on from the start, a group of six formed early on later dropping to five. The event was good fun as there were lots of hard attacks trying to break the group up,” Steve

commented. “It was really wet and cold, with a lot of water laying on the track, so it was near impossible to see when you are following so close to the other riders and the finish came down to a hard spirit,” Steve concluded. Well done to everyone who competed in this event.

‘In the Making’ is the first of two anticipated popular community exhibitions at Te Huanui for 2021, featuring works from Darfield High School’s Art Department. A collaborative exhibit, ‘In the Making’ showcases work from students across Years 7 through to Year 13. Works range from drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture with a variety of subject matter, often chosen by students. As an optional subject, junior students (Years 7 – 10) initially focus on drawing skills applications for a ‘First Time before moving onto wet media Tuition Start Up Allowance’. WESTVIEW SPECIAL FUND As a committee of Selwyn District Council, the Westview Special Fund Committee has the responsibility to administer a fund that was established through the sale of land in Darfield. The first round of applications was opened earlier in the year and in June the Committee made final decisions on successful applicants. Fourteen applications were received, of which one withdrew

after having received sufficient funding from other sources. Four projects were declined funding as they did not fully meet the criteria set by the Committee. The Committee is pleased to announce that it allocated a total of $268,465.00 (+GST) in funding, across nine successful projects. Committee Chair, Bob Mugford said, “myself and many of the other committee members were

extremely pleased to be able to allocate funding to these very worthy organisations, whose work will continue to beneﬁt the residents of Darﬁeld”. Bob added, “the second round of applications for the Westview Special Fund will be called for in mid-August, with applications being due by September 30th, 2021. The balance of the fund to be allocated stands at just over $1 million.

MALVERN CANCER SUPPORT GROUP

The Malvern Cancer Support Group has been operating locally for thirty eight years. The group was founded by local residents, Diana Reid, Reid who was recently honoured with a Queen’s Service Medal (QSM) for Services to Cancer Support and also her good friend, the late Janice Collier. Collier These women were committed to supporting locals with any form of cancer and were soon supported by like-minded individuals, many of whom are still very active members of the group today. Everyone has a story of how cancer has touched their lives, because let’s face it, it touches all our lives in some fashion. Be it a personal diagnosis, a parent, child, friend or neighbour, we can all relate to the toll it takes on those affected, at every stage of their journey. I became aware of this group

when faced with my own diagnosis nearly fourteen years ago. The support to my young family, the regular driving service to oncology and the copious amounts of baking and meals, made a terrifying diagnosis manageable. This provided some security at a time when there seemed to be none. Thankfully, following successful treatment, it was my turn to give back and I signed up to help where I could. A couple of years in, Diana approached me to ask if I would take over the reins as Chair, big shoes to fill I can tell you! The group has continued to grow, being very well supported locally by fundraising opportunities, such as the Malvern Lions Golf Tournaments, Christmas Extravaganzas, as well as many others. This allows us to provide direct support to local patients with the day-today requirements, our driving service, help with groceries and firewood, petrol vouchers and some good home baking. In addition, some bigger purchases have included lifting equipment and specialist bed facilities at the local Darfield

Hospital. Malvern community continues to lead the way in terms of support, for the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day collections in August each year. When I joined, our wonderful community was generating about $4,000 with this initiative, last year we raised over $12,000. Darﬁeld’s ‘Paint the Town Yellow’ last year was a huge success, with the whole community getting behind us, we hope this year it will be another success. Whilst recognising that the community has certainly grown, it is also in no small part, due to the hard work of this wonderful group of dedicated volunteers. Our AGM is coming up (see advert in the Public Notices), this is your chance to join our friendly group. I am taking the opportunity to hand the reins over to someone who can offer new leadership and vision, while carrying us forward. WEST MELTON PROBUS CLUB Some West Melton Probus Club members recently attended a guided tour, to view the postearthquake renovations at the Christchurch Arts Centre. The Club has an arranged trip every month which are always entertaining, informative and friendly. The ﬁrst Arts Centre building restored after the earthquakes was the Registry building in 2013, since then fourteen more buildings have reopened. These premises all provide homes for

galleries, museums, boutique retailers, eateries, event venues and much more. One building of particular interest was the Observatory Tower, which is going to be part of a boutique hotel set to be completed next year. Afterwards the tour group had lunch at Bunsen Café, which is next to Rutherford’s Den. All those present agreed that we are so fortunate to have these heritage buildings preserved for our enjoyment and also

that of future generations of Cantabrians. West Melton Probus meets on the fourth Monday of each month at the West Melton Community Centre, with interesting guest speakers scheduled to attend meetings. There has been a lot of levers being pulled to slow the growth in house prices from the Government. Introducing tax implications for investors, extending the Brightline test to ten years on investment properties, through to the Reserve Bank setting ‘loan to value ratios’ and signalling setting ‘loan to income ratios’. NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK By the time this gets to you in the ‘News’, National Volunteer Week will nearly be over for another year (21st - 27th June). But those in the community that give their time to so many different groups and organisations, will still be there giving support to our communities. There are around 1.2 million volunteers making a collective contribution to organisations, to help enrich the lives of those who live in Aotearoa (New Zealand). Much of this is selfless time, so communities can benefit! As far as St John is concerned, we have 8,576 volunteers supporting all functions within the organisation. This equates to about three volunteers for every paid staff member. Many small towns in New Zealand have their own volunteer ambulance crews, who are often on the sports field side-lines covering

events, baking cakes, as well as helping with other fundraising ventures and are also part of management committees. But they are also there in hospital Emergency Departments (E.D), as friends of E.D supporting the welfare of families of patients receiving critical care, they are driving health shuttles getting people to appointments, acting as caring callers where they touch base with people that just need a supportive chat and the list goes on. We are just one of the services that rely on volunteers in New Zealand! Coast Guard, Fire and Emergency, NZ LandSAR, Civil Defence and Red Cross are just some of the other organisations that will have impacted on all our lives, as we have been dealt a hand of ﬂoods, earthquakes, snow events, etc. We all need the support of communities to be able to do

this work. Organisations with a focus to help others, need the support of groups and individuals to do their job. Satisfaction comes from a job done well, a friendly smile, or some other acknowledgement. So take the time to say thanks, to someone in your community who has given some small sacriﬁce to help others. All things come at a cost and the rewards are not always great. If you feel you can help in any way, get in touch with an organisation near you. A big ‘shout out’ to all volunteers!

CLIMATE CHANGE INSANITY GOVERNMENT BY LIES & HYPERBOLE Opinion of Owen Jennings, former National President of Federated Farmers Part 1 Recently, our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern claimed action on the Climate Commission’s recommendations was ‘a matter of life and death’. There is zero truth in that statement. It is outrageous and dangerous. All the evidence shows that climate related deaths from heat and cold, are continuing to fall. The only weather events that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said show even a minor likelihood of occurring, are higher rainfall in limited regions and increased drought in others, all manageable. Sea level rising can

easily be mitigated if it ever becomes an issue. After ﬁfteen years can Al Gore point to even one ‘climate refugee’ from the Paciﬁc? Four new international airports on the Maldives? Tuvalu bigger today than it was in 2006, when Gore lied to the world to get an Oscar. According to Ardern and her sidekick James Shaw, Shaw our biggest problem is agriculture. It is supposed to contribute to 48% of our emissions problem, mostly burped methane. What are the known facts about methane? All methane is 0.00018% of the atmosphere. All ruminants contribute just 14% of the

methane emissions, that means the world’s bison, giraffes, antelopes, cows and sheep together, are responsible for 0.000000252% or 0.2% of one part per million of the atmosphere. New Zealand has 1% of the planet’s ruminants and somehow cutting them back 15%, slaughtering a million cows and four million sheep, as the Government intends is going to make a difference. What are those numbers in some recognisable manner? Imagine the whole atmosphere was the twelve hour, 10,000km trip from Auckland to Los Angeles. All methane is just a fraction of the pushback at the airport, 18 metres. New Zealand’s contribution is 180mm. Our required reduction is the equivalent of 27mm, or an inch for you old buggers like me. How can seemingly intelligent people stand up and keep a straight face, while telling you 27mm of a 10,000,000m trip makes any difference? (Part 2 to follow next week).

NEW PRINCIPAL FOR GREENDALE Greendale School community is about to begin a new era. CareyCarey -Anne Whitaker has been Principal of Greendale School for more than seven years, but she has now decided to move on and is leaving at the end of next week to pursue further study. She will be replaced by Bronwyn Harding, Harding who is currently the Deputy Principal at Wairakei School in Christchurch. When Carey-Anne joined the team as a junior room teacher, nine years ago, there were only twenty four children attending the school at the time. Last year the roll was seventy six, this has dropped since, as some children have moved on to Darﬁeld High School, as well as other schools. The School’s Board Chair, Ralph Brown, Brown said, “Carey-Anne has done a magniﬁcent job for our

community, she’s built strong connections with Greendale families and has created a warm and welcoming atmosphere at the school”. “I’ll miss the honest, grateful, loving children, as well as the hardworking, passionate staff and board. It’s truly such a magical school,” said CareyAnne. “It’s hard to choose my top highlights as there is a long list from my time as Principal, though whole school events (such as pets’ days, productions, house events) and the community camaraderie, is ‘pretty special’. “Other highlights include, the expanded inclusive school, new property, the focus on children’s wellbeing and EnviroCanterbury selecting the school as caretaker

of the Selwyn Near River Recharge Project,” Carey-Anne concluded. Bronwyn has been at Wairakei School for twelve years and Deputy Principal for six years. “I’m thoroughly looking forward to joining the Greendale and wider Malvern community. I’m very excited to start and connect with everyone. I’m keen to carry on the fantastic work Carey-Anne has done,” Bronwyn concluded. Bronwyn recently visited the School to meet the staff, while also spending some time in the classrooms. She liked the atmosphere and fully supports the school’s values, especially encouraging lifelong learning and particularly its emphasis on relationships.

Shelby just loves gymnastics, as well as trampolining, if she could, she would be at the Club every day. She was very proud to represent her school at the event, completing her ﬁrst competition at Step 2 level. Shelby had fantastic results, placing ﬁrst overall in her division. DARFIELD DIVISION ONE RUGBY REPORT Last Saturday, saw Rolleston make the trek to the duck pond, to take on a Ducks side that was looking to pick up the maximum points on offer, to consolidate a top four spot in the Coleman Shield. Thankfully the inclement weather that had been predicted during the week stayed away, remaining fine, but a cool day for footy. As is always the case with the field, it was in pristine condition, which considering the rain that had fallen was no mean feat. Darfield were hoping to start strongly once again, for the second week running and managed to do so with a great try, to young first five Toby Kars, Kars who is beginning to look more and more assured playing in the pivot role. Rolleston however, were keen to stay in the fight and soon scored a try themselves, with their centre finishing a strong run in the right hand corner, to trail Darfield 7-5 after 15 minutes. Territory and possession both favoured Darfield during the middle period of the half, but good defence from Rolleston kept the score line static, until

Toby managed to cross over for his second try extending the lead to 14-5. This is where it stayed for the remainder of the half. Beginning the second half, we wanted to score first again and to continue moving the Rolleston side around the field, to tire some of their bigger players out. For the second week running, the set piece was delivering a good quick ball to enable the game to be played at a fast pace. Ged Roessink scored a couple of minutes after the restart and the floodgates opened, with Darfield running in a further three tries, to Tim Wright, Wright Greg Dunshea and Hamish Pauling in the space of 13 minutes. Particularly pleasing, was the quality of the reserves coming on and continuing to play at the high standard that had been set. To Rolleston’s credit, they carried on wanting to play and at times had our defence scrambling, with their ball carriers hitting the line and throwing offloads all game. They managed to score a consolation try, when their hard running blindside flanker crossed the

chalk beside the uprights. This closed out the scoring with Darfield picking up the maximum five points, winning 42-12. Alister Collins finished a strong game, with an impeccable 6 from 6 off the tee. This week sees us having

another week off with our second round bye, before being back in action the following week taking on Lincoln at Darﬁeld, in what is our ﬁnal home game of the round robin competition.
