Local Darfield resident and cancer survivor Diana Reid, Reid was recognised in the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours, receiving a Queen’s Service Medal for services to cancer support. Diana was nominated by the Malvern Cancer Support Group. Diane Woodward a foundation member of the group and a wonderful friend and college of Diana’s, helped gather the supporting documents required to put the nomination forward. “Diana is extremely passionate about the Cancer Society in general, she is always there to help and is someone people can rely on, she’s just an amazing person,” Diane commented. Diana, along with the late Janice Collier, Collier established the Malvern Cancer Support Group in Darfield, in 1983. Both ladies were diagnosed with cancer at a young age (Diana at 34 years old) and identified the need for a local group to be established, to help support those affected by cancer. Diana is still actively involved with the group and has been a part of numerous fundraising ventures including Daffodil Day and Relay for Life events, as well as transporting people to appointments for treatment, supplying affected families with meals, offering general help and providing company and moral support to those who need it. She also volunteers helping

significantly over the years and they now have a head office in Rolleston. “I feel this medal is as much for me, as it is for my dear late friend Janice,” Diana commented with a smile. “Janice passed away in 1999, her

passing was such a loss, I was devasted. I feel very humble about receiving this award and I look forward to attending the ceremony at a later date,” she concluded. Congratulations Diana, you are a very worthy recipient.

SAMOAN LANGUAGE WEEK Talofa Samoa, residents from Westmar ‘flew’ from Darfield to Samoa on Thursday, June 3rd, as part of Samoan Language Week, which ran from Sunday, May 30th to Saturday, June 5th. The theme this year was ‘Poupou le lotoifale. Ola manuia le anofale’, which means strengthen the posts of your house, for all to thrive. A great example of this is when people are building a foundation for a fale (house), it can’t have a weak foundation or posts. This is the same for the foundations

of our families, schools and churches that play an important role in strengthening Gagana Samoa (the Samoan Language), which also plays an important part in the foundations of our overall well-being. Residents joined in learning how to ‘siva’ (dance) Samoa style, using their outstretched hands to gracefully tell a story while listening to Samoan music. The group embraced the language as they quickly learnt a Samoan/English action song. Dressed with leis, flowery

tiaras, or flower clips-seis, the enthusiastic folk asked numerous interesting questions. Westmar resident Cass Benfield spoke about his trips to Samoa, having visited Robert Louis Stevenson’s Stevenson final resting place on Mt Vaea. Robert was a Scottish writer and one of Samoa’s most famous residents. “A vibe of laughter and enjoyment could be heard, as our Westmar residents embraced Samoan Language Week,” commented Aunty Lyn. SELWYN MP UPDATE Cantabrians are, rightly, fuming. On the back of the biggest rain event we’ve seen in a century, the Government announces it as a ‘medium scale’ adverse event, a declaration that allows for a cash injection of $500,000 then, to add further insult to injury, announces almost $800 million for a cycleway along the Auckland Harbour Bridge. I can’t help but think that when Jacinda Ardern announced she’d lead ‘a government for all New Zealanders’ she actually only meant New Zealanders in Auckland. This sort of money is an absolute slap in the face to New Zealand’s most productive sector and New Zealand’s most productive region. What we need is tens of millions of dollars, to not only fix, but ‘future proof’ our infrastructure networks. Let’s give some context to the scale and cost of the damage caused to rural Canterbury a couple of weekends ago. Most farms estimate they have hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage per property, much of which has been done to uninsurable infrastructure – on farm roads, bridges, culverts, stock water systems, fences, winter feed and riparian planting have been smashed by the Waimakariri, Hawkins, Selwyn, Hororata and Ashburton rivers, to name just a few. The Government has far more resources at its disposal than it is letting on. On day one of the floods, I called on the Minister for Primary Industries Damien O’Connor to declare it a large scale adverse event, this would have freed up more funds. I also wrote to the Minister for Social Development asking her to activate Enhanced Taskforce Green as they did after the Southland floods, in early 2020. This would have brought job seekers into the region, while I understand what most farms need is skilled labour to deal with machinery and stock, at least this would have supplied some manpower to get on with the very unglamorous job of cleaning fences. Then there’s the $1.3 billion Jobs for Nature Programme – dedicated specifically to creating 11,000 jobs (it has only created 800 jobs) that will

‘improve freshwater’ and ‘enhance biodiversity on public and private land (for example by planting native species)’. There is $10 million allocated to MPI for ‘catchment group projects’ to support beef and lamb farmers, as well as dairy farmers. If the flood clean-up and reinstatement doesn’t qualify for any of this, then I don’t know what will! It could syphon money to New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) via the National Land Transport Programme (NLTP), that could at least cover earthworks and remediation for hard-to-reach networks, like our gorges and high country. As well as boosting the meagre funding allocation, the Government could also override current Resource Management Act (RMA) laws that are hampering clean-up and mitigation, efforts with emergency powers. After all, it has no hesitation in rushing through laws to legislate Councils to have Maori wards or for ECE businesses into pay parity. Many farmers who have land alongside waterways have been enormously frustrated by an

overly zealous regime, that hasn’t allowed them mitigation work which would have kept rivers clear and prevented much of this huge damage from occurring. Some are now wanting to get on with clearing up, but again, are being frustrated by the regulatory requirements. To make matters worse, many are being told by ECan that it won’t cover remediation work, because their farms don’t fall within certain rating districts and that they’ll also have to pay for a resource consent to do the cleanup themselves. You couldn’t make this stuff up, this is why I’ll do everything I can going forward to get a positive change made to our environment and planning laws. The one shining light this long wet week, has been delivered by the local farmers who’ve not only faced their own mammoth flood damage, but have also tirelessly fronted media and public enquiries. To them and the industry bodies like Federated Farmers and the Rural Support Trust, we owe a great debt of thanks.

The three days of torrential rain that came with the recent storm, has left a trail of destruction in its wake. Despite the blue skies, the effects of the storm will be with us for some time. Everybody has been affected in different ways, for a lucky few it has meant the inconvenience of a closed road, but for many in Springfield and our farming community, the impact has been devastating. With wet carpets and damaged homes, stock lost, fences down, feed ruined and land inundated with rocks and silt, it could not have been worse. From a Defence Force helicopter, I was saddened to see at first hand, the damage sustained on

the plains in the Craigieburn Valley, above Lake Coleridge and in the Malvern Hills. Our Council Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) was activated early and acted as a focal point to collate information and co-ordinate our response activity. We worked across agencies including the police, FENZ, MPI the Defence Force and with our contracted engineers. As the storm ramped up, our EOC soon became a hive of activity dealing with requests for assistance, from welfare needs to evacuation. Thank you to every person who rolled up their sleeves to help our community get through the storm and for continuing to do so, over the last two weeks. I have heard and witnessed so many stories of kindness and generosity within our community, but also stories of ingenuity and resilience in the face of water levels, that many had not been seen before. A special mention has to go out to the Selwyn Gets Ready network of volunteers. Their ability to mobilise at such short notice and put their shoulder

behind the wheel of a range of different tasks, from rescue to setting up an evacuation centre, is a testament to their passion and training. I’d also like to thank the many local business and charity organisations that pitched in to help. Despite their own plight, many of our farming community acted early and used their heavy equipment to save the day for others in our area by digging out waterways and providing temporary stopbanks. We are not out of the woods yet. Some roads remain closed or difficult to negotiate and a few bridges will be out of action for a while, some water supplies are also yet to be fully reinstated in serveral of our townships. We are doing everything within our power to fix damaged areas and keep you informed about our progress. All I can ask for is your patience and again, say thank you for having each other’s back.

LSM CONCLUDED WORK AT DHS Darfield High School’s Limited Statutory Manager (LSM) has concluded her work and the school has officially been returned to full self governance. An LSM was appointed by the Ministry of Education in September 2019 with powers of employment, communication and policies. From then until the start of this year, Gillian Simpson worked with the Board and leadership of DHS, to address concerns raised by the community. DHS Principal Andy England, England appointed in January this year, was delighted at the news. “The Ministry of Education has shown full confidence in us. Interventions like LSMs aren’t bad for schools, they can be good, a bit like surgery when it’s needed, but it’s always good when they finish.” Former LSM Gill Simpson, was happy to have completed her role, saying “it was a privilege to work with the school and the Darfield community.” Board Chair Sue Robinson has been in place throughout the process and said it was satisfying to have listened to the community and to start to see changes taking place. The Board is close to completing a new vision and set of school values, which will inform a three year strategic plan. “We’re at the start of a new chapter and we’re confident about the path ahead,” Sue commented. Andy also said that most people

in the community won’t notice the difference, as the LSM mostly worked with the Board and Principal. However, the community will appreciate the conﬁdence that this shows in their school. “The people I speak to daily enjoy Darﬁeld High School. They’ve rightly pointed out some areas to improve and as a staff team, we’re listening and working to ensure this is an amazing school for our whole community. NCEA achievement has been good throughout, but this year stand downs and suspensions are right down. We are working on improving

communication with our community and positive systems within the school, as well as developing our curriculum to be more culturally inclusive and fresher. The best thing for me is seeing so many happy faces,” Andy concluded.

This wonderful display will see people leave brightened and enlightened after seeing works from painters Heather Jonson, Jonson Helen Langen and Juliet Neill, Neill accompanied by photographs by Raewyn Murray. Murray Lyttelton based artist, Juliet Neill’s career has largely been based in performing arts, both teaching and performing, with a good portion as a puppeteer, involving script writing, performing, set design and puppet making. Juliet was commissioned to make giant puppets and masks for the Lyttelton Festival of Lights between 2007 and 2014, leading her work to move into 3D art, as

well as painting. Much of Juliet’s artworks incorporates an element of protest about human folly and how that impacts on the state of the world and our environment, whilst often throwing in a little humour to soften the blow.

KIRWEE TREE HOUSE LEARNING CENTRE Kirwee Tree House Learning Centre has been open for three months now, the children and teachers that currently attend are loving their time there. The Centre currently has space in their Koru and Kowahi rooms, and although they are full in their pre-school room, they are still accepting enrolments for waitlists. Kirwee Tree House currently have some fantastic winter promotions running for new enrolments, which include four weeks no fees, or refer a friend and both receive two

weeks fees free. The school transition programme that they are running in conjunction with Kirwee Model School (KMS) is working brilliantly and the tamariki are very excited about going to school. The KMS Pukeko students enjoy heading along to the centre as well, to have fun with the Totara room children. An exciting new introduction is the winter workshops, which are also available to the community (usually free of charge), with everyone welcome. Very soon a sleep specialist will be heading along to the Kirwee Tree House, as well as experts in setting up ﬁrst foods, child nutrition and others that we currently in the pipeline. The team are also about to commence running workshops for the tamariki which include, Music Mondays and children's baking sessions. The children are enjoying these new interactive experiences, these sessions are also open to the public, if anyone would like to take their child along to join in. The Kaiako are about to embark

on an edible garden project, where the ‘Treewees’ will start to grow vegetables while learning about the ‘garden to table’ concept and sustainability. Keep an eye out for other events Kirwee Tree House have planned, like their Matariki evening which will be open to the community as well. The team are excited to have created a dedicated space for postnatal groups. If anyone is interested in using the space for a postnatal or a similar group catch up, get in touch with the team, it’s a great way to use the centre’s resources, allowing bubs to play while caregivers have a cuppa in peace and out of the house! Feedback from parents on the Centre’s food has been positive, with all the getting their 5+ a day while they are at Kirwee Tree House. At the beginning of term 2, Darﬁeld High School (DHS) year 10 and 11, Te Reo Māori students were given the chance to complete the entire process, of carving and creating beautiful taonga (something you treasure) out of Pounamu, at a workshop held by Jon and Joe from Tuhono Taunga. Pounamu or greenstone, are terms used for several types of hard, durable stones found in southern New Zealand. These stones are highly valued, with carvings made from them playing an important role in Māori culture. The students went through several learning stages to create their taonga, including how to do a whiri (plait), how to use the machinery, cleaning, carving using a grinding wheel with diamonds and running water to stop the dust from getting into their lungs, sanding and polishing. Each student had the opportunity to create a piece for a friend or family member, as your ﬁrst piece of pounamu should be given away, they

then could make a piece for themselves. The group learnt about symmetry, angles, curves and what pressure to apply to the stone to get the look they wanted. Everyone who participated in this unique workshop thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were thankful that they had been given this opportunity.

WINTER FEED COMPETITION 2021 The Malvern and Courtenay A&P Associations combined Winter Feed Competition, was held on June 2nd and 3rd, with 42 paddocks judged over a wide area, from Halkett to Lake Coleridge. There was no competition last year due to Covid and this year heavy rain and ﬂooding nearly postponed the event. The judges were Matt McKenzie (Agricom) and Alan Shadbolt (Halkett farmer). Stewards representing the Malvern and Courtenay A&P Associations were Guy Bassett and Ashley Seaton. This year Tim Sneddon (Ravensdown Darﬁeld Agri Manager) and Jordan Watson (Hazlett) helped weigh the crops. The prizegiving and dinner was held at the Coalgate Tavern. The big screen showing photos of the day, with the highlight being Supreme winner Don Adams (at 6’6”), standing in his paddock of kale with only his head poking out. The organisers would like to thank PGG Wrightson, Ravensdown, Hazlett, Agricom, Jackson Holmes, and Farmlands, who sponsored prizes totalling over $4,000.

READER & WRITERS FESTIVAL Greendale writer Sandra Arnold was a participant in the Blackball Readers and Writers Festival over Queen’s Birthday Weekend, on the stunningly beautiful West Coast. Sandra was interviewed

about her three most recent books, a novel ‘The Ash, the Well and the Bluebell’ (Mākaro Press, NZ), a collection of short ﬁction ‘Soul Etchings’ (Retreat West Books, UK) and her book

on parental bereavement ‘Sing No Sad Songs’ (Canterbury University Press, NZ). The Student Volunteer Army (SVA) from the University of Canterbury (UC), joined forces with some Lincoln University students as well as eager locals, to help with the clean up after the recent ﬂoods.

Sixty volunteers travelled to Glentunnel Holiday Park and farms in the Dunsandel and Peel Forest area last weekend, to help clear debris off fences and shovel the shingle back onto the former paths at the Holiday Park.

Teams worked hard, returning to base tired but safe. The group have received another twenty requests for help via the Civil Defence and plan to have a team out each day, helping where they can. Students have exams starting, but are still committed to helping when and where they are able. The requests for help appear to have moved further south now, as the water in that area is starting to disappear. The SVA started in 2010, after the September 4th Christchurch earthquake, a student at UC at the time Sam Johnson, Johnson thought that there might be something helpful students could do, whilst the university was closed. He set up a Facebook page, inviting his university friends to join and this is how the Student Volunteer Army was born. The group has helped many people over the years and are committed to helping people where they can in the future.

Celia Tymons held a three day working bee at her farm, on Waianiwaniwa Road over Queen’s Birthday Weekend and was very appreciative of the help she recieved from the community. “Big thanks go to the Darﬁeld Rugby Football Club - a signiﬁcant number of their Colts, Div 1 and Div 2 teams came up for a morning and I'm eternally grateful for this and what they managed to rebuild and tidy. A massive shout out to several families and individuals who also helped over the weekend, in one way or another, their kindness is humbling and I feel priveledged to have such good people in my life,” commented Celia. Hamish Guild from High Peak Station commented on Facebook, “In the eye of the storm we had fences and bridges disappearing during the night. A week later a group of over thirty outstanding volunteers helped us on the road back to normality by taking on the mundane and back breaking job of cleaning off all the fences. Most of whom had been hit hard in some way by the very same storm. Farmers, builders, professionals, uni students, school children and even our local MP turned up to help get through more work than we thought was possible. We can’t thank you all enough for your generosity. It made those first steps in recovering from this so much easier.”

A Canterbury man named George was going to bed when his wife told him that he'd leM the light on in the shed. George opened the door to go turn off the light but saw there were people in the shed in the process of stealing things. He immediately phoned the police, who asked, "Is someone in your house?" and George said, "No," and explained the situaHon. Then they explained that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply lock his door and an officer would be there when available. George said, "Okay," hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again. "Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people in my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I've just shot them all." Then he hung up. Within five minutes three squad cars, an Armed Response unit, and an ambulance showed up. Of course, the police caught the burglars red-handed. One of the policemen said to George, "I thought you said that you'd shot them!" George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"
