Recently, five year old Marley Butler from Darfield, decided she wanted her hair cut short. Since it was too beautiful to go to waste, her mum Brooke, did some research and they decided it was a good idea to donate her hair to be made into wigs, for cancer patients. “She had to go a wee bit shorter than she originally wanted to meet the criteria, but she was all for it. Her family are so proud of her and she looks beautiful with shorter hair too,” said Brooke. “I wanted to cut my hair because it was so long and it made me happy that I could help sick people at the same time,” commented Marley.

Greendale School students were awarded the ‘Premier Exhibit’ blue ribbon for their cultural art works entered in the Malvern A & P Show recently. Teachers, Jacqui Adams and Delia Gameson were in charge of organising the sixty six students. Matai (senior class) studied the artist Warren Pohautu, producing chalk pastel art of animals and Horopito (middle class) created weaving using raffia. The school was delighted to win the blue ribbon, it’s the first time they have won this award.

DHS NEW ARTS SCHOLARSHIP Darfield High School (DHS) has recently received a new scholarship called ‘The Cyril Meyer Arts Scholarship’, donated by an ex-student. Cyril (age 26) is an actor and filmmaker, who studied acting at Federation University in Australia for three years, he has also trained with several other schools and teachers across the world. Cyril has kindly created this new opportunity, exclusively for DHS senior drama students. The recipient will receive mentorship with the American Arts Film and Television Academy’s (AAFTA) Empowering the Artist Teen. This is an online mentorship for 12-19 year olds, looking to develop and nurture their acting and content aspirations in a safe environment, with industry working professionals. Middle child and self acclaimed ‘drama nerd’ Cyril, attended DHS from 2009 to 2011 (this is where he made up his mind he was going to have a career as an actor and filmmaker). When he was at high school he wishes somebody had been able to provide an opportunity like this so, he felt it only seemed right that he provides opportunities for the next generation. “New Zealand does not have a lot of acting training opportunities, and it’s especially difficult for people in rural or isolated places, when the only options are in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Now that AAFTA have this online mentorship ‘Empowering the Artist’, amongst its other masterclasses and courses, the accessibility to great quality acting training has never been better,” Cyril commented. “I spent years searching for a school that offered practical and applicable training for my career. I’m so happy that I discovered AAFTA, who were more than supportive in helping me launch my career internationally and gave me the confidence within myself to take this leap. I’ve had more personal and professional growth in the past two years from studying with AAFTA, than I have in the years preceding.” he added. “I want to create opportunities and new pathways for emerging talent in rural New Zealand to enter the entertainment industry. This scholarship is a way for me to do this, as well as giving back to DHS, where I began the journey that I'm still on,” he explained. The mentorship runs online (Zoom) on Saturdays from April 17th, through to December 11th, with two breaks in June and September. Students will get the opportunity to interact and build connections with students and mentors across the world. Many well-known actors have been previous mentors including, directors Tony Gardiner (Neighbours) and Jet Wilkinson (The Punisher

The ‘business’ includes branding, finances, business plans, production processes and entrepreneurial mindset,” he added. “I’m excited for the future of the New Zealand (and international) film and television industry, especially with the influx of content being filmed in New Zealand (and with the right support), there’s no better time to jump into chasing your dream, than right now,” Cyril concluded.

CONSULTATION - LONG TERM PLAN Mortgages and Hedges While raking up our annual hedge trimmings it came to my rambling mind (not a lot else for the mind to do while raking hedge trimmings), that hedges and mortgages have their similarities. How? - You may ask. Well neither are a necessity, but both provide a permanent shelter against the elements for a start. Then there is the maintenance. If you chip away every year, you stay in control and there is not a big job to do, like there would be if you left it without regular trimming. If you can chip away at your mortgage, paying a little more with each payment and saving to put a lump sum on it every year or when the fixed rate term expires, it becomes a manageable asset. Selwyn residents can have their say on proposals in the Council’s 10 year plan until 5pm, Friday 30th of April. The consultation document This Way… 2031 - will be available online and through Council offices and service centres, Mayor Sam Broughton is encouraging residents, ratepayers and stakeholders to make sure they have their say. “We have a number of big decisions ahead of us over the next decade,” Sam said. “It’s really important that we hear from the community about whether we’ve got the priorities right, and what things we might do differently. “With the district continuing to grow, we need to make sure we’re planning for the future but also looking after our existing assets and infrastructure, as well as completing projects we’ve already started,” Sam concluded. The consultation document sets out eight key proposals, which SDC are seeking feedback on: • Continuing the current approach to maintaining safe

water supplies, which meet community expectations and comply with expected new regulations. • Changing how residents pay for the supply of drinking water, to meet increasing costs and to help manage high water demand. • Building a new piped wastewater system for Darfield and Kirwee. • Increasing funding for road maintenance. • An extensive programme of road upgrades and new transport projects. • Building a new Community Centre for Prebbleton. • Building a new combined library/service centre and community centre on Leeston Park. • Developing a new Hororata Community Centre at the Domain. The average proposed rates increase for the 2021/22 year (starting 1st of July 2021) is 4.9%, which is a total of $138, or $2.65 per week. Based on the proposals in the consultation document, average

annual rate rises over the 10 year period are forecast to be 4% to 5% each year. For individual ratepayers the actual change may be smaller or greater, depending on their location and the services provided. LIFE CYCLE • Monday 29 March Consultation open. • Friday 30 April

‘SELWYN’S HERITAGE LEFT BEHIND BY COUNCILS LONG TERM PLAN’ At the end of last year, a meeting of all Selwyn District Heritage and Historical organisations was held, to gauge the overall feeling towards current Council funding for this sector. “There were representatives from several likeminded groups in attendance and we have now formalised this group to become, ‘The Selwyn Heritage and Historical Network’. Our Vision is ‘A Collective group for the promotion of Heritage and History within the Selwyn District. The aim is to bring alive Heritage Trails, Schools ability to educate their students about our History and create tourism within the district,” said chairperson Grant Clausen, Clausen from Leeston. “For a number of years, we have been disillusioned with the funding Selwyn District Council (SDC) make available to the Heritage and Historical organisations in the district, compared to what is allocated to Sport and Recreation. “The organisations working to collect and preserve the districts history are run by groups of aging volunteers, who are passionate about being able to tell the stories of our past to children and the general population of the whole district.

It is vitally important that the stories, articles, items and history of Selwyn, are preserved now for future generations. “We cannot do justice to this vital work without support from the Council. While they have been proactive in offering some annual grants and contestable funding streams to assist in the day to day costs of some of our sector, with the current level of commitment there will never be enough fiscal resources available to complete the important large projects, that have been discussed in these chambers in the past. Fundraising sausage sizzles and raffles will not raise the money required to fulfil this task. Some of our sector have needed to make applications to outside organisations for funding, just to cover running costs. “History isn’t just old buildings, it’s the stories about the area, the people who lived here, and the tools or devices they used in their everyday lives. “As a group, we would like to see significant funding towards, the following things: • Buildings and display areas made fit for purpose, to properly house the history of our district, in Museums and Historical Buildings. • Story boards at specific sites

throughout the district, in townships and rural areas (local committees will know where those places are). • The development and promotion (perhaps with an app and brochures) of a Heritage Trail, that leads visitors from one place to the next, from one end of the district to the other. • This will bring money into the district (e.g. service stations, dairies, restaurants, local craft shops) and make Selwyn a destination. • Monetary support of all the Heritage and Historical societies in the area, and an on-going contestable fund. • An appointed staff member at Council, to whom all enquiries can be made and who can promote the Sector with the assistance of these organisations. “To do all of the above we need help from members of the public. To help us reach our goal, please make a submission to the SDC Long Term Plan, asking for substantial funding to Heritage and Historical organisations of the district,” concluded Grant.

The Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge is an annual fundraiser for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC). Each year, firefighter’s race up 51 flights of stairs (1,103 steps), at the Auckland Sky Tower, while wearing their full kit (up to 25kg) to raise vital funds. Every day seven children or adults in New Zealand, are diagnosed with a form of blood cancer like leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma. LBC is the national charity dedicated to supporting patients and their families, which can last months or even years. LBC receives very little government funding, so this fundraiser helps raise needed contributions. Tony Scott developed the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge event in 2005, as a fundraiser for LBC. The event is delivered jointly by LBC and FireUp Events, with the generous cooperation and provision of the venue by SkyCity Auckland, Auckland Airport together with Rosenbauer also provide vital support, alongside other event

sponsors including, New Zealand Fire Service, Pac Fire (Pacific Helmets), High Pressure Equipment and TotalCare. This event is now consistently raising over 1 million dollars. Local Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade members, Dale Evans (Captain), Jonny Hamilton, Hamilton Mat Redmond and Blair Jones, Jones as well as Darfield Voluntary Rural Fire Force member Luke Simpson, Simpson are taking on this challenge. Kirwee team training has been going well with members running three to four times a week, including hill climbs. “Team members interest in

this event came from wanting to raise money for a great cause, as well as also wanting to personally push limits within ourselves,” commented spokesperson, Mat Redmond. “So far we have raised $4,000 from donations and a successful car wash that we ran a few weeks back. We are expecting to raise more with the ongoing battery drive we currently have running,” Mat concluded.

TERRACE STATION WOOLSHED Part 2 of the Terrace Station Woolshed, following on from Part 1 - 19th March ‘21 issue. In 1869 when the woolshed was built, the best supply of timber in Canterbury came from Banks Peninsula, as there was no timber across most of the Canterbury Plains. We do not have a name of the sawmillers, but it is likely to have been from the White and Coop Mill, at Little River. The timber went along a bush tramway to Lake Forsyth, floated across the water, then by another tram track to the edge of Lake Ellesmere, from where it was pulled by a steampowered tug to Timberyard Point, near Lakeside. One or two men from Terrace Station made 101 trips to the lake in 1868, to bring back the timber on wagons pulled by bullocks. Tom Piercy and J Milne were two employees noted in the Station’s Journal and they stayed overnight at Lake Farm. W Oliver, Oliver who was a cartage contractor in Hororata, also brought back some loads. The building is 125 feet long

(38 metres) and 42 feet wide (12.8 metres), with a loft running the entire length for storage of wool bales. A 16 foot (4.8 metres) extension to the wool room was added in 1883 by Jesse Prestidge and Sons, a Hororata family. When built, the roofing was shingles made

from VDL - timber from Van Diemen’s Land (Australia). Diemen These were covered with corrugated iron, in 1895. A volunteer with building skills would be welcome to help with the restoration work and replacement of the shearing board.

A FUN MORNING FOR LEARNERS Monday, April 12th saw 250 Year 0-2 Malvern learners enjoy a morning of fundamental movement skills at Darfield Domain. The students enjoyed rotating through ten different games on offer, with a focus on learning. The stations were delivered by some amazing Darfield High School (DHS) Year 7 students. This was a great opportunity for them to reconnect with their previous schools, students and continuing their Whakatipu Kaihautū leadership. West Melton Year 5 student Kyle EndicottEndicott-Davies (age 9), enjoys the challenge of competing in the pool. He is currently looking forward to joining the Parafed Canterbury team for the upcoming Halberg Junior Disability Games, at King's College in Auckland. The Games is a three day (23-25 April), national sports competition open to 8-21 year olds with a physical or visual impairment. Kyle was born with a rare vascular condition that affects his left leg and is excited about the opportunity to not only race, but to meet lots of new people too. “The opportunity to not only compete in swimming but also athletics as well as ‘have a go’ at other sports is going be awesome,” commented Kyle. He has a provisional swimming classification of S9 which accommodates several different disabilities, including people with amputations and cerebral palsy - swimmers generally have severe weakness in one leg. He will be competing in the S9 50m and 100m freestyle and backstroke and 75m individual medley events. He will also be competing in the SM9 25m breaststroke, the same classification as Sophie Pascoe. Pascoe Kyle has been swimming for as long as he can remember, and currently swims for Selwyn Swimming Club and competes against able-bodied children his own age. Recently he won the Year 5 50m freestyle race at his school champs, then placed fourth at Selwyn Zones. Athletics at the Games will see Kyle competing in the 50m and

100m sprint, discus, shot put, long jump and club throw. Kyle doesn’t think his disability holds him back commenting, “Sometimes it is harder or takes me longer, but I can still do everything”. This positive attitude was recently recognised by his school when he received the Determination Award for racing in the competitive Year 5 and 6 triathlon event. This will be Kyle's first time at the Halberg Games and is

also taking the opportunity to try his hand at archery, golf, taekwondo and gymnastics, he is particularly looking forward to the archery. He has even secured his own sponsors for this event to assist him with the entry fee, uniform and travel costs. MALVERN RIFLE CLUB Training Day, April 10, 2021 - 800, 900 yards,10 counting shots After overnight and morning rain, a fine day greeted shooters as they arrived at the range. Someone made the mistake of commenting that there wasn’t much wind while the range was being set up and the wind arrived as shooting was about to start. A tricky wind, blowing from the target towards the shooters with subtle changes in both directions and pressure proved a challenge to most shooters at some time during the afternoon. A training day is an opportunity to try different loads without having to shoot for scores, or receive some technique coaching. Allan and Chris provided coaching for Peter and our visitors Daniel and Damon whose scores weren’t recorded. The fickle wind increased in strength and subtleness of changes at 900 yards, proving even more challenging as the scores reflect. Chris shot the only possible for the afternoon at 800 yards.

Sam top scored in the Target Rifle Class with consistent shooting. Next week the Club will shoot the teams postal competition. 10 counting shots at 300, 500 and 600 yards in coached teams (Target Rifle 5 person teams, F Class 4 person teams). This is a National competition with each club shooting on their home range and scores collated nationally. Malvern has won both TR and F-Class competitions in previous years. Other shooters are welcome to shoot the ranges as well, either uncoached or coached if they wish. TR A

ATHLETICS SUCCESSES The Canterbury Children's Athletics Interprovincial Team, which was captained by Darfield High School student Jody McCarthyMcCarthy-Dempsey and managed by her mum Alley McCarthyMcCarthy -Dempsey, Dempsey recently attended the Grade 12 - 13 competition. The event was held at Massey University, on April 3rd and 4th. Jody has been doing athletics with the Selwyn Club since she was just six years old and thoroughly enjoys the competitions and friendships she has made over the years. Jody was placed second overall in the Grade 13 Girls competition, with some fantastic results. The South Island Secondary Schools Athletics Competition took place at Nga Puna Wai, in Christchurch, on April 9th and 10th. Competitors from all over the South Island attended this tough event.
