The 122nd Malvern A & P Show held on Saturday, March 27th, at Sheffield Domain, was a huge success. People from near and far attended the Show, with positive comments flowing all day. The weather was ideal, competition was fierce and showgoers were happy.

Crowds enjoyed the variety of action on offer throughout the day, there was something for everyone. It was fantastic to see so many people supporting this

event, after it was cancelled last year due to Lockdown.

President Richard Hill, Hill was delighted with how the day went and was pleased with what the committee achieved this year.

There were extra schools’ attending and trade sites, as they chose to stay on after the South Island Agricultural Field Days, which show organisers were pleased about.

Show, as they are the future generations coming through.

The hotly contested FMG Young Farmers competition was a highlight for many and something a lot of younger children will look forward to in the future. The Equestrian section had fierce competition and the jumping was a highlight for many. Lots of fun was had in the Cattle and Sheep areas, with many friendships made over the A & P season.

The speed shear and wood chopping provided lots of entertainment, along with the Rev and Ride providing many laughs. The Produce and Arts section were well supported, attracting new competitors this year.

Many people were heard commenting, that they are looking forward to next year’s show already.

Emile Hunt had a wonderful 100th Birthday on March 23rd, with family and friend from as far north as Wellington and as far south as Invercargill.

Messages were received from The Queen, NZ Governor General, Prime Minister, Local MP and also had a personal visit from Selwyn’s Mayor, Sam Broughton.

The Family had a celebratory lunch on her actual birthday, in Halswell, then an afternoon tea at Emile’s home on Wednesday with friends. She received beautiful flowers and lovely gifts.

New Image Hair Studio, based in Darfield, has had tremendous growth over the past eight year period. Lisa Mohi has been in ownership throughout this time, thanks to the support of the Salon’s amazing longstanding regulars as well as the growing community and her family.

The Studio has recently been refurbished with a neutral décor, creating a calm relaxing atmosphere, with the added bonus of a new styling bay, to keep up with demand.

During Lisa’s ownership, the Studio has encouraged and supported five stylists to gain their full qualifications, as well as undergoing regular training and online courses, keeping all employees up-to-date with the latest trends.

New Image prefers to use the Keune colour and product range, which is sourced from the highest quality ingredients and is designed for all hair types.

Lisa would like to take this opportunity to introduce new and familiar faces, people see when they come into the Salon.

Lisa (Owner/Operator) - Eleven years in the hair industry, her favourite aspect of hair

dressing is cutting and colouring corrections, as well as getting to know her clients and their families. Lisa is just about to come off maternity leave and will be back in salon part time, doing two late nights per week.

Alex (Owner/Barber) - First year in the industry, he is looking forward to helping clients look and feel amazing when they walk out the door. Alex is currently studying full time in Christchurch and will be working on the floor towards the end of the year, for cuts, fades, cut throat razors, beards and all things barbering!

Chloe (Senior Stylist) - Nine years in the trade, her favourite aspect of the industry is foiling and building relationships with her clients. Chloe is looking forward to having her first daughter in April, but will be returning after maternity leave for a couple of days per week!

Leannda - Twenty three years experience, her favourite aspect of hair dressing is making clients feel great and loves forming great relationship with her clients. Leannda has been with New Image for many years and is a friendly favourite in the Salon.

Megan (Senior Stylist) - Ten

years experience, she loves all her clients and thoroughly enjoys making them feel and look good. Megan is about to have her second baby in April, but is hoping to return part time in the future.

Sue (Assistant/Reception) Twenty two years in the industry, she loves helping out in the Salon and working with friendly clients.

Niki (Senior Stylist) - Fifteen years experience, she enjoys being able to use her creativity skills to achieve and maintain the look clients love.

Jodie (New Senior Stylist) - Five years in the industry, her favourite aspect is transformations! She loves a challenge giving someone a fresh new look. Jodie has just started full time with New Image, previously working in Rangiora.

Emma (New Senior Stylist) Twelve years experience, she enjoys being creative and using her skills to embrace new challenges. She has a great eye for detail and gets satisfaction seeing her clients walking out the door happy. Emma will be at the Salon part time and will be a familiar face to many.

What’s been happening?

Statistics can be dry depending on what is presented, so I will report on different aspects to give an oversight.

St John Darfield crews have attended about 110 jobs, since the start of the year. As far as a breakdown is concerned approximately 70% are medical, with the balance being trauma related.

Conditions featuring high in the variety of calls we attend are; altered level of consciousness, heart conditions, shortness of breath, stroke, seizures, as well as general medical issues, or transport from medical centres. Trauma calls are commonly falls, traumatic accidents and less commonly road accidents.

Many of these will require transport to hospital or a 24 hour type facility. This will mean the ambulance and crew will be out of the area for about three hours per call, so often a second call will be responded to by the next nearest available ambulance, which may be from Rolleston, Leeston or the city.

This ensures a response appropriate to the condition.

It works both ways though, as often the Darfield appliance returning home from the hospital, may get responded to a job elsewhere before return to the station.

Calls are assigned a priority response code, which I will explain in a later edition.

In March we have attended community events, including South Island Agricultural Field Days and Sheffield Show, as well as holding a First Aid Course. Not all our work is ambulance related and we rely on volunteers to help do this work.

The Board meeting was held on Monday, March 22nd, in the Darfield Library and Service Centre meeting rooms, with the Council’s Group Manager Property, Douglas Marshall, Marshall in attendance to provide information.

Prior to the meeting, the Board held a workshop with Environment Canterbury (ECan) Councillors representing mid-Canterbury, John Sunckell and Ian Mackenzie, Mackenzie to receive information on ECan’s Long Term Plan (www.ecan.govt.nz/your-region/plans-strategies-and-bylaws/long-term-plans) that sets out service priorities, work programmes and resource requirements, such as expenditure and funding for a ten year period. The Community Board will make a submission to this Long Term Plan and residents of Malvern are encouraged to read it and also make submissions.

The Board also received information from the Selwyn District Council Chief Executive David Ward, Ward on Selwyn District Council’s draft Long Term Plan and the forthcoming Representation Review, that will look at Ward boundaries and number of councillors.

The Board discussed issues raised at the community meetings they attend, including an update on the upgrade of the Sheffield water supply - to enable new connections to be made, drivers ignoring the stop signs at Aylesbury corner, working with communities to install bike tracks and Board member attendance at Malvern Anzac Day services. Also noted, was the removal of wilding pines at Castle Hill village, due to start shortly.

The Board will have another dropdrop-in session on Monday, April 12th, in Hororata at a venue to be confirmed. The dropdrop-in session will start at 3.30pm, everyone is invited to come and talk to the Board about any issue across the Ward.

MALVERN COMMUNITY PARISH In my Christian outlook, Easter is the heartfelt focus of what it means to accept Jesus into one’s life and being true to how one ‘rolls’ in the Easter Season.

Last year, Easter was completely ‘odd’ with Covid 19 restrictions in place. But it was an Easter of a simple, pared back celebration, concentrating on what Easter really means to one individually.

In New Zealand, Easter weekend is Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Resurrection Sunday, with Monday being a public holiday.

From a Christian perspective we focus on the Easter season with it beginning on Easter Day and concluding on the Day of Pentecost (this year Sunday, May 23rd). It is the great fifty days of season, (including eight Sundays) celebrating the resurrection and ascension of Christ, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

The week prior to Easter, the Holy week activities are reenacted, as the build-up becomes significant for the church community. Jesus was gifted to us because of God’s incredible aroha/love for us. He died and rose from the tomb, defeating death and sin, once and for all. Jesus ascended to heaven saying, “I will come again.” (Mark 13:26.).

Easter 2021 is awaiting us, as we prepare to celebrate together.

It reminds us that there is suffering, death, rejection, betrayal, denial and disaster.

Many in the world have experienced this due to Covid 19. New Zealand is indeed blessed and from this, as we journey through the Easter season, we recount the opportunities, light, life, hope, kindness and love experiences that we have encountered,

continue to encounter and pray for in this time of the pandemic.

Let us not forget the lessons learnt, including how to be resilient and how we reset our plans. Our church prayer for you, is to remember hope, peace, joy, faith, love and the light of Jesus is the break-through in your life, when you accept him as your saviour.

We would love to see you at our Easter Sunday Service, held at Trinity Church Darfield, at 9:30am. (Clocks go back an hour due to daylight savings, ending at 3am, on April 4th).

Easter can fall on any Sunday between March 22nd and April 25th. Why does Easter move around? The Jewish calendar hinges on the solar and lunar calendar, hence the fluctuation in dates for Passover and Easter.

Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon, following the spring (or in New Zealand the autumn) equinox. This year the first full moon after the equinox was on March 29th, consequently the first Sunday after that is April 4th. The Jewish festival of Passover began on Saturday evening, March 27th.

Time has always been important

to Christians, for the simple reason that our redemption takes place in time. Unlike the stories of gods and heroes of mythology, Jesus lived among us in time and history. He was born, he grew up, he preached the kingdom of God, he was executed. Then on Easter Day we celebrate his rising from the dead. It is recorded there in scripture for us to read.

The Christian church has been so precise about the timing of such an important celebration.

However, this is only part of the story, because not only is Easter a special time, it is quite literally ‘special time’. It is time out of

time, time like no other. The first four books of the Bible's New Testament tell us, how on a certain first day of the week, at early dawn, Jesus’s empty tomb was discovered by a group of three women. The women made their way back to the eleven disciples and told them what they had seen and heard. The women proclaimed how Jesus had risen. This Easter Sunday you’d be welcome to visit any of Malvern’s Churches, where you ca n he a r wha t Je s us ’s resurrection means for us today, 2000 years later.

SELWYN CATHOLIC PARISH Easter is one of the long weekends before winter. It is a time of relaxation and gives people the opportunity to attend one of the various Easter events on offer.

For Christians, Easter is the paramount Christian festival of the year, as we focus on the core event of our Faith - the Resurrection of Jesus and the promise of eternal life.

For a truly ‘Christian Experience’ of Easter, we need to be like the early Christians and encounter the Risen Lord.

After the Sabbath, Mary Magdalene and the other women went to the tomb at dawn, to

complete the funeral rites that they were unable to fulfil after Jesus was taken down from the cross. But how were they to move the stone? To their surprise, the stone had been moved already.

As we come to appreciate, the empty tomb itself is not the proof of the Resurrection of Jesus; the women were simply perplexed when they found the stone rolled away. The proof of the Resurrection of Jesus was provided by their encounter with Jesus, the Risen Lord.

Jesus revealed himself, spoke to Mary Magdalene and then to several other disciples. Mary

recognised Jesus when he spoke her name.

I hope that the commemoration of the life, sufferings, death, and resurrection of Jesus, will deepen our personal faith. The key to deepening our faith is to encounter the Lord in prayer. We need to encounter Jesus in our lives and recognise that he accompanies us in life - as he did the disciples on the Road to Emmaus.

As we enjoy the Easter ‘holi-day’, may we also grow in faith, as we celebrate this paramount ‘holyday’ in the Christian calendar.

Barry Powell (84 years old) has been the Drum Major for the Ellesmere Pipe Band, since 1996 and has been part of the Band that has attended Malvern A & P Show since 1952. Barry wants to attend the Ellesmere A & P Show, in October this year as Drum Major, and look at taking a step back. The Malvern A & P Association wanted to recognise and thank Barry for his long service to the Malvern A & P Show and was presented with a token of appreciation at the Show.

“This year team members had to eat marshmallows and then whistle before the next person drank a stubbie.

Without the usual windup machine, it was decided to make the last member of the team shear left handed, which is very tricky, and leveled the playing field. The winners were Dave, Campbell and Jake.

Malvern A & P Show is the biggest Wool Show in the South Island outside of the Christchurch Show. Judges this year were Jeremy and Michelle from Yaldhurst Wools. The majority of the fleeces are gifted to the Association which help contribute to the Show - thanks to the wonderful farmers.

SAFETY CHECK TIME! Answer me this honestly, hands up who actually wants to get a WOF for their car? I’m guessing, if you answered honestly, there is a fair portion of you out there who don’t really like having to get a WOF periodically. To most car owners, a WOF is a grudge purchase. I don’t think anyone really wants to be told their car is deteriorating, wearing out and requires repairs. In saying that, I do think most vehicle owners do want to know their car is safe to operate.

I liken my job as an AVI (Authorised Vehicle Inspector) to being a Policeman. Most of the laws and regulations we must enforce are there for public safety and most of the regulations make sense. I also have to say, they are written by people in offices in Wellington (no disrespect to Wellington office workers) and whether we agree with them or not, we have to work within their guidelines.

In the automotive industry, the guidelines for WOF regulations are in the VIRM, the reasons for rejection are all listed in black and white.

WOF authority recently, because they are not thoroughly and correctly checking your vehicle.

DARFIELD AUTO GROOM Cieran Mallinder from Darfield Auto Groom, is proud to offer vehicle grooming services to the area. He has always had an interest in vehicles and enjoys building cars, engineering, fabrication, grooming and anything mechanical.

Cieran, originally from Kaikoura, has been based in the area for the past ten years and attended Darfield High School. He gained experience in grooming while working for Armstrong Prestige, as well as a couple of panel shops and car yards.

Starting Darfield Auto Groom was dream of his, that has now become a growing business. He wanted to provide a service that would help local people keep their vehicles hygienic and

looking great, without having to go to town.

The business is based in Darfield, just a five minute walk to the main street, which allows people to go shopping or for a coffee while their vehicle is getting cleaned.

“I thought having a grooming service available in the area would be extremely convenient for locals, as it means they don’t have to go into Christchurch and wait all day, while their car is being groomed,” Cieran commented.

Cieran also likes the fact that his business keeps him occupied, while doing something he enjoys. He uses a mixture of different brands, including Pacer, Turtle Wax and Armor All.

NZ WINNING PAIR Recently, Kirwee locals Dustin Rowlands (aged 12) and Sam Partington (aged 11), expertly coached by local champion ‘ZBoss’ Leah Zydenbos, Zydenbos took out the New Zealand Mounted Games Under 12 Pairs Championship, in Hastings. The competition was scheduled to be at the 2021 Horse of the Year, but due to being back in Covid Level 2 the week prior to the event, Horse of the Year was cancelled. Not to be deterred, the New Zealand Mounted Games Association planned to move the Pairs

Championship, to the Hawkes Bay Equestrian Park instead, if New Zealand went to Alert Level 1. There was a lot of suspense in competitors households on the afternoon of Friday, March 5th, but with the move to Alert Level 1 it was full steam ahead, travelling to Hastings on Saturday the morning.

coordination. Ponies are required to be nimble, fast, strong and brave. The duo have been competing in pairs together for approximately three years and have a great team bond. Dustin was riding his energetic and speedy pony Polly and Sam was riding Birdie, who at twenty nine years old, had won National Mounted Games titles before Sam was born!

In the first session, a few nerves showed, but Dustin and Sam came out tied in first place. The second session, saw the ponies and nerves start to settle, with the pair gaining a few points on their opposition. With a forecast of torrential rain and potential cancellation of finals on the last day, coach Leah’s plan for the session prior, was to put points on the table. Dustin and Sam managed this goal, with finals going ahead, at times in heavy rain. The team retained their lead taking out the Under 12 trophy!

INSPIRED FAN Hayley Davis from West Melton, is keen to get Jonathan Antoine’s Antoine name out in New Zealand. After watching the twenty six year old audition for Britain’s Got Talent in 2012, she fell in love with his voice and felt he had a story to tell.

Approximately six weeks ago she connected with him, and has been touched by his kindness and finds the way he interacts with his fans, to be touching.

Jonathan entered United Kingdom’s Britain’s Got Talent, with his friend Charlotte Jaconelli.

Jaconelli He came onto the Show extremely nervous and shy at the tender age of seventeen. Jonathan told his story about being bullied, because of his size and the way he looked. On the Show Charlotte commented, “never

judge a book by its cover.”

“The judges and audience did not think the pair was going to be great, but as soon as Jonathan opened his mouth, that all changed. They sang ‘The Prayer’, it was stunning, Jonathan’s voice is like no other,” Hayley explained.

Jonathan has had a rough life at times, because he felt he did not fit in. Hayley can relate to this, so finds that he inspires her every day.

“His music is beautiful; he can sing anything, and his style is hugely different to most artists.

He has recorded some beautiful classic songs, like Compass (I Will Lead You Home), which is about always being there and not giving up,” commented Hayley.

A few weeks back Jonathan did a radio interview in the United

Kingdom, which Hayley was able to have her question she sent through via Facebook answered.

“Jonathan would like to come to New Zealand, but due to Covid there is no travel right now.

“He loves keeping in touch with fans and refers to them as the ‘Fantoines’,” Hayley concluded.

Hayley would be Jonathan’s biggest fan in New Zealand, she hopes others will enjoy his music and be inspired by him as well.

Big crowds and sunny conditions saw the South Island Agricultural Field Days (SIAFD) have record attendance.

Thousands of people went t o s e e t h e m ac h in e ry demonst rati ons, prim ary industry trade sites and interactive stalls.

“We’ve had a wonderful three days, the weather has been great with bumper crowds,” said SIAFD Chairperson Michaela

McLeod.

McLeod “The feedback we got is the exhibitors really enjoyed the positive engagement they had with the public, which is a great achievement for our organising committee which is largely made up of volunteers,” McLeod added.

On the Thursday, presentation were made for the best sites.

Alpine Buildings NZ headed off stiff competition to win the best overall site award at the SIAFD, taking home the Hamish Reid Memorial Trophy (Former SIAFD Committee Chair).

Judged out of more than 600 sites, Alpine Buildings NZ had erected a 230 square meter clear span shed, clearly demonstrating their ability to cover a large bird proof area with limited footings.

“We feel really delighted to win this award, and equally privileged to be able to display our innovative shed amongst all the other innovations that were at the SIAFD,” said Alpine Buildings Managing Director Anthony Brewerton.

Brewerton Polaris picked up the Best Big Site award after wowing the

crowds with their off-road vehicles who were put through their paces on their makeshift all terrain course.

The judges said it was hard to go past Polaris who were constantly surrounded by onlookers, which also clearly displayed the vehicle's safety abilities.

Christchurch based planning and surveying company Survus Consultants scooped the Best Small Site award, impressing the judges with their striking site and ability to create great conversation and interaction with the public.

A bye week for the champion Crusaders, was the perfect opportunity for senior lock and two-time World Cup winning All Black Sam Whitelock, Whitelock to share the importance of rest, relaxation and dealing with pressure. The 32 year old, who grew up on a dairy farm in the Manawatu, attended the SIAFD, in Kirwee as part of his role as a Farmstrong ambassador.

Sam has been an ambassador for Farmstrong since 2016, seeing a lot of parallels between rugby and farming.

“I know the challenges farmers regularly face with weather events, production targets, fluctuating prices and changing regulations. I reckon rugby and farming are similar in that way; there are always results you need to achieve, whatever the conditions. Dealing with disappointment when things don't go according to plan, is also a challenge for both,” Sam commented.

“Once I complete my rugby career, I’ll be heading back to the land. When I do, I’ll continue applying all that I have been sharing and learning through Farmstrong,” Sam concluded.

Judges were unanimous in their decision to award Frizzell’s Smart Paddock Weigher the 2021 Agri-Innovation award, at the South Island Agricultural Field Days held in Kirwee.

The three-person panel of industry experts were extremely impressed by the new technology which allows farmers to weigh young livestock in the paddock, therefore offering the possibility to better manage the individual needs of the animal.

“Whenever you’re taking animals away from the paddock, they’re not doing what you need

them to do, which is to grow, however with the Frizzell’s Smart Paddock Weigher right there in the paddock, the animals continue to put on weight in a relatively stress-free manor, whilst the farmer is able to gain all the information they need,” said judge Neil Baxter.

Baxter “Rather than treat all animals as the same, this allows you to offer individual solutions to a herd.

“Farmers can find that significant labour is required to move stock to a weighing area to weigh stock manually and

because of the time and cost involved, animals are never really weighed at optimal times which results in a loss o f p r od u ct i o n, d e l a y e d notifications of diseases or poor pasture management decision making. So we’re hoping to counter all of those issues with the Smart Paddock Weigher,” said product designer Alistair Frizzell.

The towable unmanned scales entice livestock onto the platform, with the promise of grain and nuts by way of an automated feeder. It then reads the RFID tag, records the animals weigh and monitors the herd weight performance.

Animals can visit anytime, but will only be permitted a predetermined rate of feed during any 24-hour period.

“There’s no doubt this product can have a positive impact on the animal’s health and wellbeing, as well as labour and cost saving for the farmer,” said Neil.

A SPLASH-TACULAR SUCCESS Eighty lucky children from Windwhistle, Hororata and Ararira Springs School were fortunate enough to enjoy a wonderful day of water fun, safety and activities on Thursday, March 25th, at Splash-tacular.

For two hours children enjoyed the water based fun, at Lake Crichton. This initiative was designed for children to explore different water activities, while learning safety and having a blast.... Mission accomplished!

This was Selwyn Sports Trust’s second attempt at running this event, with weather resulting in cancellation last December, but the weather couldn't have been better this time!

Selwyn Aquatic Centre provided a boat rescue experience, Arawa Canoe Club attended with a bunch of kayaks and Airborn Paddling had a range of paddle

boards. Jackie from Water Safety NZ attended and the infamous duo, Mitch and Josh from Selwyn Sports Trust, kept children entertained with fun games and activities.

“A huge thank you to the

schools for supporting this event, the providers for making the event so engaging and enjoyable and to Chris and Robin Wright for the use of Lake Crichton,” commented Jayde Mayberry, Mayberry Selwyn Sports Trust.

WEST MELTON BOWLING CLUB Autumn has finally arrived, bringing with it some cooler weather and some relief from the hot summer that we have experienced this year. It is also the period when most Club Championships are completed.

In the Club Men’s Open Champion Singles, Bob Burnett won the title by going through undefeated on both sides of the draw.

Andy Weber prevailed against Graeme Hessey in the Club Men’s Under fives Singles Championship final. In an enthralling Club Men’s Championship Pairs final, where the score was locked at 15 each going into the final, it was Bill Paekau and Bob Burnett who scored the winning point, over Roye Daniels and Ken Sharplin.

Tuesday, March 23rd, was the Canterbury Primary and Canterbury AIMS (Association of Intermediate and Middle Schools) Triathlon for Year 5 - 8 students. This year's venue, on South Eyre Road, was new to both the competitors and event organisers, but feedback so far has been positive. The weather was mint, but the water was certainly not the temperature of a heated swimming pool! An open water swim gave the athletes a new challenge and experience, with everyone giving it their all. Year 5 - 6 competitors swam 100m, biked 7km and ran 2km, while Year 7 -8 students swam 150m, biked 10km and ran 2.5km.

CRICKET - WRIGHT/FULTON CUP Darfield's successful cricket season didn't turn out to have the fairy tale finish they were hoping for, as they lost to Sefton in the Canterbury Country Cricket Association Premier final, at Mainpower Oval on Saturday.

Darfield chose to bat first and were in trouble early, as brothers Liam and Zak Foulkes were both back in the shed, with the score at just 32. From here, things never really improved as a constant flow of wickets prevented any partnerships of value from forming. Jesse Frew stubbornly faced 53 balls for his 19 and just as he started to look comfortable, he top edged a catch to square leg and the team were 65/4. Ryan Hughes was determined to resist as he made his way to 64 runs, from 80 balls but again, no one could stick around with him. Sefton's bowlers gave little away and they proved why they have

been the form side of the competition. Nick Gilbert, Gilbert batting out of position, made a contribution with 22 at a run a ball but Darfield were still bowled out for 177 in 44.2, of their allotted 45 overs.

Darfield required early wickets and Zak Foulkes obliged.

Danger batsmen Mackenzie Smith was snatched by Nick Jenkins at 1st slip on the 3rd ball of the innings. It felt like the cricket gods were smiling, but experience will often triumph over youth. Matt Laffey and Chris Warner got Sefton to 70 runs before Warner was out lbw to Jesse Frew. The Sefton runrate was almost identical to Darfield's, but the difference was wickets in hand.

Laffey was joined by Lance Taylor and the pair did a workman's job of knocking off the runs, despite Liam Foulkes mixing his bowlers and changing his fields.

Laffey was eventually out for 56 with only 38 runs required for victory and 62 balls to get it in.

Sefton's captain Tim Harrison, made 17 before he was Frew's second lbw but with only 11 runs left to get, it was as good as over for Darfield. You wouldn't have thought so, by the way the bowlers continued to run in hard and the fielders throw themselves around.

Lance Taylor had the privilege of hitting the winning runs and Sefton were champions with 6 wickets in hand and 21 balls unused.

The players would like to extend their sincerest thanks to friends, family, committee members and supporters that attended the final game and also to those who showed support throughout the season.

Congratulations to Natalie Hetherington for winning the Batstone 21 and Under Tennis Cup, for the second year in a row. “Her game has really improved this year and she has often played in the A grade against men, winning most of her matches,” commented a spokesperson.

She has been selected to represent Canterbury U17 at the national teams’ event and will probably move to Premier grade next year. The cup was first presented in 1943.

A WIN FOR GREENDALE MALVERN RIFLE CLUB Canterbury Autumn Championship & South Island Champs Round 2

Greendale Cricket Club won the Canterbury Country Combined Senior Grade final, beating Allenton by 37 runs on Saturday, March 27th. A match report will be in next week’s Malvern News.

The Canterbury Autumn Champs (and 2nd round of the South Island Champs) were held at the Ashburton Rifle Range, on March 27th and 28th, hosted by the Ashburton and Districts Rifle Club. Shooters from Otago, Malborough, the West Coast and Canterbury attended the meeting.

A good contingent of Malvern Rifle Club members competed over the weekend, in fine warm conditions. The wind was not strong but was variable in direction and pressure, providing a challenge for many shooters.

Malvern’s Chris Kershaw was the ‘A’ Grade target rifle winner, dropping only 4 points over the weekend, scoring 346.40 from a possible 350.70, an excellent display of shooting. Malvern’s Andre du Toit was the runner up

in the ‘A’ Grade competition.

There were no Malvern shooters in ‘B’ Grade and Malvern’s Sam Kershaw won the ‘C’ Grade competition.

Malvern’s Charlie Ledbrook was 2nd in the FTR class, ahead of clubmate Mark Alexander in 3rd place.

In the South Island Championship, held over two championship meetings, Andre du Toit won the short range and long range aggregates and was the overall South Island Target Rifle Champion. Sam Kershaw was the ‘C’ Grade South Island Champion and Charlie Ledbrook was the South Island FTR Champion. The Malvern Rifle Club won the South Island Target Rifle Championship.

The Food Show is returning to Christchurch, on April 9th - 11th and will be held at Christchurch Arena.
