The Malvern Community Arts Council (MCAC) will mark its 43rd year of operation, at its AGM on Wednesday, April 21st, at Te Huanui Gallery in Darfield. In his Chairperson’s report, Philip Baldwin will look back over some of the Arts Council’s highlights during 2020, including the effects of the Covid-19 Lockdown on MCAC programmes, as well as another successful Darfield Artweek.

“We are pleased that the community of artists in Selwyn continues to thrive in the wake of a most challenging year,” he added. “Our line-up of exhibitions for this year includes a wide range of mediums, as well as artistic styles and celebrates the work of artists through more than 40 years of mounting community art exhibitions,” Philip concluded. MCAC invites local folks who are willing to give a few hours a month to join the gallery’s volunteer roster, to help keep Te Huanui open six days a week. “There are also some vacancies on our Performing Arts and Darfield Artweek committees, that would suit people who have an interest in the arts, even though they may only have a small

amount of time to offer,” Philip added. In celebrating 40 years what has become known as Darfi eld Artweek, the organising committee is adding a Youth Category for the October exhibition this year. “We are optimistic that young artists in the district will find this addition to Artweek, an encouraging outlet for their creative energies,” Philip concluded. All those interested in MCAC’s mission, ‘to promote art and artists to the people of Selwyn’, are invited to attend the AGM at the Selwyn Gallery.

TINY TREASURES ON DISPLAY Explore the ‘Tiny Treasures’ on show at Te Huanui, as the first of three, ‘Forty Years of Darfield Artweek’ celebration exhibitions, which open from 6pm on Friday, March 26th. Popular and previous prize winners of Darfield Artweek were invited to exhibit works (no larger than 210mm x 297mm) in their chosen medium. Artists exhibiting in ‘Tiny Treasures’ include: Del Lowe, David Waterman, Ben Groters, Asako Ridgen, David Choi, Rob Lawrence and Georgia Hubbard -Hinterleitner. David Waterman: joins Tiny Treasures with his distinctive style, familiar to Darfield Artweek followers, as he was the 2020 Premier Award winner. David is currently developing works based on Canterbury plains and landscape, including a variety of texture and colour. Del Lowe: grew up surrounded by nature and animals, so it is of no surprise that her art has evolved to specialise in animals, especially horses. Del works in oils, watercolour, graphite and coloured pencils, giving viewers a glimpse of a moment in time. Georgia Hubbard-Hinterleitner: works in a range of mediums, from acrylic paint to powder dye, on pressed paper, enjoying the evolving nature of art and

referencing past movements. Georgia enjoys styles from Baroque to Greco-Roman, to incorporate in modern art styles and techniques through her work. Asako Ridgen: first came to New Zealand as an exchange student, attending Darfield High School. Later returning to live in Dunedin, where she joined a local art group, finding her love of printmaking. Asako enjoys the technical side of printmaking, carefully designing artworks that she hopes will make people smile. Rob Lawrence: has been an avid birder since youth, taking up photography in the 70’s, but more seriously in the last 15 years. Rob loves to photograph birds and enjoys the challenge that New Zealand’s indigenous birdlife brings to his medium. David Choi works primarily in black pen, but does experiment using colour. David favours contrasting ideas in his art, such as mixing nature with technology, alongside his interest of architecture and vehicles. Ben Groters: has a strong background in agriculture and a passion for the outdoors. Ben works with fine tipped ink pen, creating landscape and hunting scenes from his adventures

throughout New Zealand’s back country. His work is inspired by black and white photographs, often with plenty of detail and contrast.

The Kirwee Community Hall committee hosted a highly successful Irish-themed dance, held in their Hall, last Saturday evening called the ‘St Patrick’s Day Fling’. Most guests wore a little, or a lot of green, the music was largely Irish, the supper included real Irish stew and Guinness was available at the bar. The hall was filled with young and old, soaking up the atmosphere. DJ Singh Star played a delightful selection of Irish music and encouraged everyone to get up and dance. A highlight of the night was the appearance of an authentic Irish dancer, Shannon Dilger, of Southern Cross Irish Dance, who entranced the crowd with her slick and energetic performances. She also taught some traditional dances to large groups of eager learners. Also in the line-up, were spot prizes and raffle draws (even including the odd potato), a variety of other music, and a steady supply of food. Originally built by the Courtenay A & P Association in 1911, the Kirwee Community Hall has been developed over the years, to a point where it has become a very desirable function venue. This dance was held to raise funds for completing the new kitchen. It was clear that many of those who attended were keen to support the Hall, because they had themselves worked on the Kirwee, or other hall committees in the past.

There were multiple stories shared, as these people trickled their way through to the kitchen over the course of the evening, to see its progress. In 2019, when still very new to Kirwee, Julie Shanks joined the Hall Association Committee as one of the Catering Convenors. Credit goes to her for her meticulous organisation of this event, enabling the kitchen project to be completed. There was not enough money in the bank, even with grants from Four Winds and Lions foundations, to do all that was needed, so Julie and her team are counting on this effort to help make up the difference. “It turned out to be a fantastic

night,” Julie commented. “We weren’t even sure if we would sell enough tickets to begin with! You could see that everyone had a great time and we have certainly covered our costs,” she concluded. There is already talk of holding another dance like it next year! The Committee would like to thank everyone who attended, entering so willingly into the spirit of the ‘Fling’, those who contributed food, or raffle prizes and all the volunteers who helped with making the night run smoothly. The Committee also offers particular thanks to Shannon Dilger and DJ Singh Star for their special contributions.

OXFORD A & P SHOW There will be something for everyone at the 116th annual Oxford A & P Show, to be held on Easter Saturday, April 3rd. Marie FitzPatrick, President, along with husband Andrew and two month old daughter Margaret, are looking forward to another successful Show Day. Marie has had a long-term involvement with the Show, as she has displayed animals from a very young age. The Committee are proud to be hosting the Royal A & P Society Junior Judges and Paraders New Zealand Finals, where Medals of Excellence will be awarded. Some of the exciting attractions to look for throughout the day include; the Paddock to Plate

Marquee with Southern Smokers BBQ team and local butcher Shane Frahm, FreestyleNZ motorbike stunt riders, woodchopping, shearing, Baby and Miss/Master Juniors Competition and highland dancing to name a few. Family entertainment will be provided by Josh Grimaldi (Magician and Stilt Walker) and Pedalmania. The main arena will be featuring the Equestrian section, along with a presentation by the Waimak Dog Agility Club, horse jumping, the everpopular terrier race and the presentation of Supreme Awards. Food Courts will keep people’s taste buds active and trade,

art and craft sites will keep showgoers spending and supporting stallholders throughout the day. The Grand Parade is the highlight of the Show and will kick off at 2.15pm, followed by a lolly scramble. The Oxford A & P Show Committee pride themselves on presenting a fabulous community event, enabling families to attend at reasonable cost, with no gate fee for school age children, or vehicles. Gates open at 7am, with judging commencing from 8.30am onwards.

DARFIELD MENZSHED Darfield MenzShed have continued to repair, replace and maintain the Fairy doors and signage at McHugh's Forest Park. It’s fair to say the odd door handle and window get wrenched off by the little ones, although we’ve noticed an increase in stolen or broken items such as horse shoes and signs, that are clearly being carried out by older people. Other recent activities include, repairing quite a number of broken chairs and tables that are clearly valued by owners. Our capability to create, cut, shape and finish items have resulted in a variety of odd jobs. We continue to make wooden toys for purchase, these are proving to be popular and this helps increase our wood-turning skills. The MenzShed welcomes new members who would like to learn, or share skills. Feel free to call in and see us on Tuesday, or Thursday mornings, to see if it would suit you. DARFIELD PLUNKET & TOY LIBRARY The Darfield Cub and Scout groups undertook a door-todoor collection, on behalf of Darfield Plunket and Toy Library, on March 9th and 10th. Their efforts saw donations collected totalling an amazing $758.70! The contribution was greatly appreciated by Darfield Plunket and Toy Library, with the impact going far and wide. The monies raised will go towards the continued operating costs of Plunket facilities, running coffee groups and towards some new

toys for the Toy Library. The funds enable the ongoing support networks and running of events to connect families/ whanau in the area. The Darfield Plunket and Toy Library wish to extend a sincere thanks to the Cub and Scout groups, as well as their leaders for undertaking the collections. With a proposed new district plan notified and going through a public participation process, it is useful to consider what changes to the rules have been proposed. For example, one change is the urban zone minimum allotment sizes for residential activities. The existing planning framework for Selwyn has been modified through various processes over the years and it is difficult to determine the minimum allotment, as it varies between townships and there are multiple zones within a township that do not appear to follow rhyme, or reason. The Proposed Selwyn District Plan sought to remedy this

district. The Council indicated that the proposed changes were to make it clear what the provisions would be and to map those areas, that they would be subject too. In main townships, there is a range of three key residential zones, being the General Residential Zone, the LowDensity Residential Zone and the Large Lot Residential Zone. When undertaking a subdivision, developments are subject to both a minimum allotment size provision and a minimum average allotment size, to allow for a range of section sizes, rather than just uniform developments throughout the district. The General Residential Zone dominates the urban areas of Rolleston, Lincoln and Prebbleton, and seeks to create minimum allotments of 500m² with a minimum average section size of 650m². Similar allotment sizes in the same area, under the existing plan range from 650m² through to 800m², under the current planning provisions. In the Low-Density Residential Zone applied across most urban areas in Leeston, Darfield, part of Kirwee and in Southbridge, the minimum allotment size is proposed to be 600m² with an average allotment size of 750m², some 100m² larger than provided for in the General Residential Zone. For Leeston this is an increase from the current 650m² minimum provided for currently.

that there were many allotments created historically that could have easily been subdivided, in the future when more intensive development was undertaken. However, now sections created that were 1,300m² in Leeston, will not easily be subdivided in the future under the proposed new plan, as two lots will need to have an average of 750m² each. Large Lot Residential Zoned sites are provided for on the periphery of townships, with minimum allotment sizes of 3,000m² and average allotment sizes of 5,000m² (half a hectare). These larger allotments provide for semilifestyle sections. Our Government has given clear directions to councils, to provide more intensive housing and to meet the growing housing demand. It therefore seems interesting that the approach taken in the Proposed Selwyn District Plan, is to increase some minimum allotment sizes in parts of the district and to provide for urban development largely within the existing urban extent of townships. This appears to be somewhat maintaining the status quo, rather than promoting growth. It is now up to the Selwyn Community to decide what they want for their district, though the submissions and further submissions to the Proposed District Plan.

SPRINGFIELD SCHOOL FAREWELL Springfield turned on the perfect afternoon on Friday, March 19th, when past and present Springfield School students, families, principals, teachers, staff and community members, turned up in droves to farewell the old school buildings. Current Springfield School students acted as ambassadors to welcome visitors, taking huge pride in showing their guests around the school. Photos of Springfield School spanning its 150 year history, were on display for guests to reminisce, contrasted with plans for the new school building. Stories of swimming in the water race, eating lunch (and carving names) in the ‘shelter shed’ and memories of the ‘murder house’, painted a vibrant picture of school days gone by. Ex-pupil Daphne Thorne, rang the bell for the final time - with permission from, Principal Keri Steele of course! Guests

enjoyed catching up in the glorious autumn sunshine and sharing memories over afternoon tea. It was a lovely way to celebrate the end of an era together. Rebuild contractors began on

site on Monday, March 22nd, the first phase being rerouting services and moving the office building, prior to demolition of the old block. Construction of the new building is scheduled to be completed by Christmas.

Honeybone Builders Limited (HBL) is a family-owned business, that was founded in 1956 by Brian Honeybone’s father, Tom. Many locals may remember the Honeybone name from Waikari, which is where they were based until they moved to Christchurch, in 1970. One of HBL apprentices, George Cooper, from Darfield has been with them for four years. George said, “I love being part of a hardworking and highly skilled team. Our foreman, Tina Mehlhopt is great to work with and she demands quality in all of our work, which is the standard HBL has always maintained.” Tina has been with HBL for fifteen years, but in the trade for eighteen years. She is now a shareholder in the company and will take over running the business when Brian retires. Brian still applies the oldfashioned adage to his work, “my name is on everything, so it needs to be quality.” Simon and Jarrod complete the building team, Jarrod in his final year of his apprenticeship and Simon, having been on loan to HBL for some time, the team decided he was too good to let him go back to his previous employer! The Jubilee Commi ee welcomed past and present students, teachers, principals, parents and community members to join in the celebra ng of the 150th Jubilee. The following welcome was in the Jubilee booklet: “You will noƟce many changes, and some old familiar landmarks are not as memory pictured them. Buildings grow old too and the new take their place to incorporate modern teaching faciliƟes. Changes are inevitable but more important to us all is the meeƟng again with people, renewing friendships and understanding why school days shaped and directed our lives. We can see now, with hindsight, that our teachers really wanted to encourage the potenƟal that they saw in us so long ago. “To those who have no familiar school room to return to, we hope that meeƟng with your old friends and re-living of those good old days will more than compensate for the changes. “Our thoughts too, go to those classmates and teachers around the world who are not able to be with us to join in the celebraƟons. “We thank too all those who encouraged and supported us to go ahead and organise the weekend.” From the Hororata School Jubilee CommiƩee

Participants were invited to a School Assembly on the Friday afternoon, followed by an informal meet and greet barbecue held in the School grounds. Saturday afternoon, back at the school grounds, the crowd was entertained with students performing the Kapa Haka, helped by Bee Frew. This was followed on by speeches from the current Principal and Jubilee committee member, Marty Gameson, Ex-pupil and Jubilee Committee Chairperson Rod Oliver, Ex-pupil and 2004 Royal New Zealand Air Force Officer, NZ Order of Merit recipient Shaun Clarke and Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg. Decade photos were taken, which gave people another chance to catch up with old school friends and family members that they hadn’t seen for a while. The afternoon concluded with the raising of the flag, cutting of the cakes and afternoon tea, hosted by the Hororata PTA. The Saturday evening event was held at Darfield Recreation Centre. Ex-pupil Holly Kimber sang a few songs throughout the night and was incredible, as per usual. Once again the speeches during the night were informative and entertaining, likewise the quiz which was at tables for guest to complete before the dinner. Sunday morning was hosted by Rev Jenni Carter with a incredible service at Hororata School. The committee would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that was involved in one way or another.

The Tour of New Zealand Cycle Race takes place every two years. Rob Potts of Darfield, has been involved in the previous two events and has been invited to join the Hynds Heart Racing team, once again. The team is mostly from of the Mt Eden Cycling Group, but also has a rider from Nelson, Blenheim, Christchurch, Queenstown and Darfield. The Tour is usually an international event, however this year due to a certain virus, it will have limited international riders competing. Being a race some competitive riders are there for the glory and prize money, but most, including Rob’s team, are there to raise money for charity. The Hynds Heart Racing team funds will go to The Heart Foundation, a very worthy cause. This charity works to stop New Zealanders dying prematurely from heart disease, being our single biggest killer. There are more

than 172,000 New Zealanders living with heart disease and is responsible for the death of more than 6,000 Kiwis every year, claiming the life of one person every 90 minutes. Many of these deaths are premature and preventable. “Our team’s goal is to raise $30,000 for the Heart Foundation, having raised $25,000 in 2019. Ironically last year, our team captain had a heart attack and had stents installed, but he is back racing again this year,” Rob commented. The course will start on April 10th and take the following route:

UPCOMING 150TH JUBILEE Weedons School will celebrate their 150th Jubilee over Labour Weekend, although the School does not officially turn 150, until November 9th. The original name for the district was Weeden, after William Weeden the innkeeper, but when a railway employee painted the station's name on a sign, he inadvertently changed the name to Weedons forever. It has been pointed out that the sign writer was probably not a pupil of the School! The School was established after Mr J.J. McClelland gave an acre of land from his Clarenda Farm and Mr J.J. Peacock gave half an acre from his land, adjoining the Church. Mr McClelland also gave a $25 (converted) donation towards

MALVERN SWIMMING SPORTS The cheering was deafening at the Malvern Primary Schools Swimming Sports, that were held on Thursday, March 18th, at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre. This is the first event for the Malvern Zone for the season and as per usual, it all went swimmingly. MALVERN SQUASH Malvern Squash Club held their first Open Competition in thirty years, on March 12th and 13th. The Tournament was open to forty entries, which filled very quickly. Entrants came from far and wide including, Oxford, Christchurch, Amberley, Methven, Ashburton and Dunedin. There was some amazing squash played, with some closely fought games. A great mix of spectators were coming and going throughout the Tournament. DHS ATHLETICS SUCCESSES The Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Athletics was held on Saturday, March 20th, at Nga Puna Wai in Christchurch, had fifteen students from Darfield High School (DHS) participating. Prior to the finals, students had to first qualify at their own Athletics days. DHS had planned to hold theirs on March 1st, but had to cancel due to the most recent Covid-19 Level 2 restrictions. DHS was then invited to participate in the Combined Country School Day on March 10th, where a group of eighty students competed. Forty two qualified to take part in the Canterbury Secondary School Preliminary Athletics Day on March 16th, with the top placing for each event participating in the finals. Records were broken and personal bests (PB) obtained at all events, with the most recent records from Saturdays finals listed below. DARFIELD PREMIER CRICKET Darfield booked themselves a place in the final, with an 8 run win over competition favourites Leeston-Southbridge, on Saturday. Choosing to bat first on the opposition’s flat and hard pitch, Darfield lost Zak Foulkes with the score at 14. Jesse Frew came in, starting strong with 2 well hit boundaries, but had his stumps shattered with the score at 45. Captain Liam Foulkes continued his good form, as he and Tom Dempster took the team total to 79, before Dempster was out. The run rate was ticking over at close to 6 per over and the inform Ryan Hughes walked out to bat, but he was run out first ball in his eagerness to get moving. Liam Foulkes and Alister Collins then shut up shop for a few overs, but Foulkes was soon out lbw for 40 runs and Darfield were in trouble at 79/5, after 18 overs. The team had been deliberately selected with a strong batting focus and Robson Foulkes walked out at number 6 to join Collins. The pair rebuilt the innings by gathering singles where they could. But Robson Foulkes was soon out lbw and Collins fell 20 runs later. Ben Innes patiently noodled his way to 10 runs, but was caught and bowled leaving Nick Jenkins and Tim Boyle as the last recognised batsmen, with 5 overs left to bat, 2 wickets in hand and only 160 runs in the bank. Jenkins then took the game by the scruff of the neck and refused to let go. He boofed 2 sixes and 5 fours, while Boyle

did the clever job of getting Jenkins on strike. The pair got the score to 192 when Boyle was caught behind for 10, leaving Jenkins and David Beatty to finish the innings. Beatty gave Jenkins the strike, with a couple of singles and Jenkins hit a couple more boundaries, before he was lbw for 45 from 30 balls in the last over, with 2 balls remaining of the innings. Leeston-Southbridge required 210 for victory, the beginning of their innings mirrored Darfield’s as they lost the first wicket at 14 and the next at 32, as Zak Foulkes removed the dangerous Rupert Young, then Toby Doyle. The 3rd wicket of Tim Gruijters fell lbw to Liam Foulkes at 76 and both innings were nearly identical. Things changed here, as Sam and Harry Chamberlain took not a single risk, as they picked singles and hit the odd bad ball. Darfield’s bowlers were so well controlled, that despite the batters best attempt to shift momentum, Lee-Bridge could not quite keep up with the run rate. Harry Chamberlain fell for 59, lbw to Ryan Hughes with the score at 134. His brother Sam was then joined by a 3rd Chamberlain (Ben), the game was still with the hosts. Sam Chamberlain hit 2 sixes off David Beatty, as the run rate neared 6 per over and they required 30 runs from 28 balls. He hit big off Ryan Hughes, but miss timed it to Tom Dempster at mid-off, which left the last 30 runs at a run per ball. Zak Foulkes, the fast bowler ripped out Ben Chamberlain’s stumps for 28. A panicked run

out followed, the singles refused to come and Ryan Hughes grabbed another wicket for himself. Lee-Bridge needed a boundary from the penultimate ball, but Zak Foulkes knocked over the stumps instead, to all but wrap up the game as the innings closed at 202/9, from 45 overs. MASEFIELD SHIELD Last Tuesday, the Malvern over 40s cricket side travelled to Akaroa for the muchanticipated annual Masefield Shield Challenge, against Banks Peninsula. The Malvern team were greeted in the historic harbour town by rain, however, it was more like heavy autumn drizzle, that make farmers smile after a long hot summer. The toss was won and Malvern elected to bowl. In the opening overs, Malvern's top order bowlers Simon Earl, Regan Dalley and Raymond Williams, were deposited out of the ground on occasions and more than once, fielders had to give way to traffic travelling along Rue Lavaud, as they trotted after a ball bouncing up the hill, into St Patrick’s Church. Dispute the flurry of boundaries, the run rate didn’t get out of hand and Dalley made the initial breakthrough, with the score at 31. Bowling with a slippery wet ball, Raymond Williams picked up two wickets in two overs, with the score in the 70s. Callum Davidson, Bodie Hawkins and Nick Greenslade,

all bowled well without luck to finish off the first innings of 20 overs. Jones and Williams got the Malvern run chase under way, as the drizzle turned to rain. Jones played the anchor roll while Williams, Chaz Frew, Simon Lee and Callum Davidson, were the stroke makers. Davidson showed his class, scoring his 35 retired in just 11 scoring shots Jones and Jamie Hamilton, also retired on 35. Simon Earl (23) and Chris Thwaites (14) brought the innings to a close, at 194/7 giving Peninsula a chase of 86 runs to win. Greenslade was the pick of the bowlers all day, with 2-8 off 5 overs. The Masefield brothers put on 50 together and got the scores close, but the Malvern bowlers and fielders did their jobs and Peninsula finished 5 runs short, meaning Malvern retained the Masefield shield. MALVERN RIFLE CLUB Nelson Championship On the 13th and 14th of March many Malvern shooters travelled to the Pakihi Range, Westport to compete in the Nelson Champs. Shooters from the far south (Riverton), the north (Te Puke, Masterson, Palmerston North) and places in between travelled to compete. Shooters enjoyed hot warm sunny conditions over both days. The winds were light, changeable and apparently hard to read and predict. Malvern’s Allan White finished 1 centre ahead of the Blenheim-Kaituna Club’s Malcolm Dodson (345.31 vs 345.30) in A grade. Chris Kershaw finished 3rd (342.31). Malvern’s Barry Brown was 2nd in C grade, Geoff Smith 2nd in FTR Classic and Charlie Ledbrook 3rd in FTR. Phil Nicol finished 1st in FPR. The Malvern Target Rifle Team, Allan White, Chris Kershaw, and Daniel Alexander won the Teams Championship, with Ashburton 2nd, Te Puke 3rd and Kaituna 4th. Club Training Day, March 20, 2021 500 & 600 yards 10 counting shots A cool clear day greeted the small group of shooters to the range on March 20th for a Club Training Day with 10 counting shots at 500 and 600 yards. A light, variable tail wind promised to make things interesting. A training day is an opportunity to try different loads without shooters having to shoot for scores. Allan was trying out different loads and

Mark was shooting FTR Classic using 155 grain projectiles rather than his usual 185 grain. Andrew was observed trying out Charlie’s FTR rifle. Damon and his sons Aaron and Daniel were welcomed to the range. They shot one of the club’s rifles in FTR. (That is with a bipod & telescopic sights attached to the rifle and a rear bag under the butt of the stock.) Allan and Chris coached them during their shooting. Congratulations to Chris who shot the double 50 in Target Rifle. An Italian businessman goes to Indonesia for a business trip. He hates Indonesian food, so he asked the concierge in his hotel, “Is there any restaurant where I can find Italian food here?” The concierge says, “You’re lucky sir, a new pizza restaurant just opened and they deliver!” The businessman asks for the restaurant’s number, goes back to his room and orders his pizza. 30 minutes later, the delivery person shows up with the order.
