50 years ago, the current Chief of the Coalgate Volunteer Fire Brigade, Philip Shaw, Shaw became a dedicated member to the team. On Saturday, March 13th, at the Glentunnel Community Hall, the Brigade celebrated the longevity of Phil’s dedication, by awarding him with a Double Gold Star Medal, for 50 years of service.

There was a great turnout of neighbouring brigade members, including fire service dignitaries - Area Manager Dave Berry, Berry Region Manager Paul Henderson and Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigade Representative Bruce Moffatt.

Moffatt Jenny Gallagher (Malvern Ward Councillor) presented Phil with a Merit Award to recognise his 50 year commitment to the fire service and the community.

“Many close friends and family also attended and it was a great honour to share this 50 year achievement with him,” commented Daryl Smith, Smith SO of Coalgate Fire Brigade.

New Zealand’s best demonstration and largest regional field days, the South Island Agricultural Field Days (SIAFD), which will take place from March 24th-26th in Kirwee, are moving with the times and taking their ticketing system online for the first time.

Organisers of the event say there are several reasons why they are taking a technological approach this year, starting with being able to better communicate with the interested attendees and also to celebrate the events 70th year, making it the oldest Agricultural Field Days in New Zealand.

“We want everyone that attends the South Island Agricultural

Field Days to have the best experience possible, so having a direct line of communication with the attendees will allow us to send maps, timetable changes or any sort of relevant information,” said event manager Tineka Johnstone.

Johnstone The organising committee has also backed a 100% ticket price refund, in case the SIAFD does not go ahead due to COVID19, ensuring the public are protected from any losses. “It’s the right thing to do,” said Johnstone.

“We’re really encouraging people to jump online, book their tickets and skip the queues. It’s the same as going to watch a rugby or cricket

game, grab your tickets online and set yourself up for a great couple of days.”

Johnstone says, that while online ticketing will also help the event meet new government guidelines, the new ticketing system was already in the pipeline, prior to those rules being implemented.

“Farmers and those in the primary industry use technology every day and this is just another example of how utilising technology can help the attendees, the exhibitors and us.”

Homemade baking, bouncy castles, petting zoo, pony rides, cotton candy, bacon butties, plus over one hundred stalls full of beautiful crafts, homewares, clothing, food, health and beauty products - the West Melton Country Fete will have something for everyone!

Plans are well underway for the next Fete to be held at West Melton School on Sunday, March 28th, from 10am to 3pm.

For a gold coin donation at

the gate, people can enjoy a day filled with fabulous entertainment from local bands, dancers and school groups, plus loads of children’s games and activities - like mini jeeps, bumper boats, hunger ball and of course farm animals. Parents can grab a coffee, a raffle ticket (and hopefully a prize!) while browsing the many stalls on display. A great range of food will be available throughout the day.

The 2017 and 2019 Fetes were extremely successful, with over 5,000 people through the gates. The school was able to raise enough funds for new playgrounds and outdoor learning spaces, that the students all love and enjoy daily.

Gemma and Danny Stubbs, from Twisted Metal Garage moved their family to Hororata four years ago, from New Brighton, for the country life and for Danny to be closer to his day job as an agricultural mechanic, in Rolleston. Danny has always had a passion for cars, mainly American and has always had one in the garage, either his own, or a build for someone else.

Twisted Metal Garage came about after a few locals asked Danny to repair and service their vehicles, so when they moved to Hororata they built a 18 x 10 workshop and started their new business.

“I still work fulltime, in Rolleston, but believe this is the main reason my shop does so well, as all my work is carried out after hours, keeping locals on the road when they need their vehicles most and I work in with their timeframes,” Danny commented.

“I have a regular client base which is a good sign people are happy. I carry out WOF and COF

repairs, servicing requirements and general repairs, along with custom work and modifications.

If it’s got wheels or an engine I can sort it - cars, diggers, farm bikes, tractors, lawnmowers, caravans and horse floats.

“I’m happy to come on-site, if the vehicle isn’t mobile, to make things easier. I have a very good supply network for discount parts and oils, but best of all, because it’s really just an expansion of a hobby for me, I keep a very low flat labour rate of $30, which I think would be hard to beat!

“The workshop is well set out, with plenty of equipment, having a four post hoist, various diagnostic gear and plenty of specialist tools. It also has a press, mig welder, gas set and plasma cutter for any light engineering repairs.

“My son Harley also has a passion for cars and bikes and helps me out on a variety of vehicles when I need him. This teaches him good work ethic as it’ll never be harder than it is working for your Dad.

“I often get asked about the name ’Twisted’. Both Gemma and I have very alternative minds, she is a very talented airbrush and portrait artist and has a studio alongside my workshop. She operates her business Twisted Sista Kustoms

and I like to build wild creations from car parts so hence the name. Twisted Metal Garage.

Over the last month we have noticed an increase in both adults and children not wearing cycle helmets.

This includes cyclists riding along with helmets on their handlebars.

Anyone over 14 years of age can be issued an infringement notice (fine) for $55.

Riders can be offered compliance, which means they must buy a new helmet and supply a receipt within 14 days, this stops people from just bringing in a borrowed helmet.It is also an offence to

ride a bicycle at night without lights.

The Selwyn District Council have been completing a lot of work around cycle safety and wearing a cycle helmet is part of this prevention message.

In relation to crime, we are still getting property being stolen from insecure vehicles across the district.

If you have a GPS mounted on your window screen, it pays to put the holder away as well, as if someone sees a holder, they know that the GPS will be hidden in the glovebox,

or under seats. Tradesmen also must keep their tools and valuable equipment out of sight, if left in their vehicles overnight.

We are still apprehending drunk drivers across the district, some of whom have very alarming alcohol readings, the message here is - if you are drinking alcohol, don’t drive!

This year’s Leeston Fete was a huge success, as locals could tell by the population of the town more than doubling, on Saturday, March 13th.

With great weather and the lack of covid restrictions, people came from near and far, grasping the chance to get out and about to attend this great event.

The Leeston Fete has gone from strength to strength, over the past few years and could not go ahead without the

organi sat iona l sk il ls of the Ellesmere Business & Promotions (EB&P) team. This enthusiastic group of volunteers started planning for this day in September 2020, with the hope that history wouldn’t repeat itself.

The running of this event is no small undertaking. Even though gates opened at 10am on the Saturday, the EB&P committee were already out marking the road on Friday evening and up bright and early by 6am on the

Saturday morning, ready for Fete goers!

“The local community and business were instrumental in making the day a successful one, along with attendees from out of the area.

“It is a great way to show off Leeston and the surrounding area and people were commenting that they never knew Leeston was so big and so vibrant,” commented Leeston Fete spokesperson, Kath Mentink.

Mentink Overall, the event was a great success and enjoyed by all who went. The perfect weather on the day, except for the unfortunate gusts of wind in the afternoon, seemed to reflect in the faces and cheerful demeanour of the crowd.

We look forward to seeing you again next year!

What Have We Learned?

With the growing uncertainty around Covid-19 again, perhaps it is time to reflect on lessons that should have been learned.

• Keep the pantry full!

• Have the supplies on hand, to do that lockdown project if it comes to that.

• Enjoy the sunshine and keep talking to each other.

• Change the things you can and don’t stress about what you can’t.

• Consolidate personal debt into one manageable sum.

• Pay down that mortgage, as quickly as you can.

Hopefully, this will pass reasonably quickly without affecting us down here too much, but be prepared and put yourself in a good position to withstand a loss of income, by paying down more on your mortgage than you need to, building in a good buffer that can tide you over.

Be proactive and you will get through this in good shape.

FARM FOR LEASE One of the earliest surviving ‘total builds’ in Hororata is the 1869, twenty-stand woolshed at Terrace Station. It was built

by John Hall, for shearing his 30,000 sheep which were run on the 30,000-acre property. One thousand Merinos could be held under cover and more than two hundred bales of wool could be stored in the loft. Richard and Kate

Foster have been custodians of this historic building for the past fifty years. In their farming career, they have shorn 4,000 sheep annually, but now it is used for just one hundred.

A major restoration was carried out between 2000 - 2010 and now it is time to continue this work. The plan is to turn this building into a museum of the

wool industry. Interest is being shown from various quarters and volunteers with an interest in shearing and the wool industry would be welcome to help with this work.

New Zealand’s prosperity in the nineteenth century was founded on wool, but these days synthetics are more popular for carpets and clothing.

Local carpentry apprentices are encouraged to get their entries in by Friday, March 26th, for the Canterbury regional heat of the New Zealand Certified Builders (NZCB) Apprentice Challenge.

This annual Challenge is sponsored by ITM and held in association with the Industry Training Association Building (ITAB), with support from the Apprenticeship Scholarship Trust. It is open to any apprentices employed by NZCB member builders, or who are enrolled with Industry Training Association Building (ITAB).

All regional heats will take place on Saturday, April 10th, with the Canterbury heat being held at Hamptons ITM, Ferry Road, Waltham, Christchurch A week before the regional heats, competitors will be advised of the project they are to build. On the day of the heats each competitor will have eight hours to complete that project using durable, trade-quality timber and materials courtesy of ITM. The finished projects must meet minimum safety standards and will be judged by a panel of experienced building practitioners and industry educators. The judges will be assessing a range of building elements, including quality of the craftsmanship, assembly, ability to work to a detailed plan, safe working technique

and time management.

It was great to see so many people checking out the displays, which included the museum, rural portable dam and monsoon bucket, filling and emptying demonstration, the ground monitor (used to shoot a huge spray of water to protect structures, or hedges, from the risk of catching fire), virtual reality 'escape my house' headsets and an escape tunnel.

There were fire fighter dressups for kids, selfie photo frames for young and old!, as well as the old favourite, using the hose to squirt some water about!

There are plenty of photos on Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade’s Facebook page and they would love people to share their photos with them as well.

The Malvern Community Board is hosting monthly drop-in sessions in communities around Malvern.

This month the Board visited Springfield, to listen to comments and discussion on a wide range of topics and issues, related to Springfield and the wider community. Council staff were present to give the technical answers, or to take questions away for further investigation.

The community expressed their appreciation of the refurbishment of the Springfield Railway Station, currently being completed by Kiwirail. A sign on Tramway Road marks the original site of the Railway Station. Also appreciated, was the good work done in the Springfield area by grader drivers. The weeds growing in the recently developed in Tawera Reserve were commented on, with recent plantings being overtaken by the weeds. Council contractors are now responsible for maintaining the Reserve. Staff present, said that spraying will take place in the next week or so and agreed to follow up on the lack of maintenance. All the exercise stations planned for the Reserve have been completed and are able to be used. The installation of a cycle track and pump track are the next projects planned for the Reserve.

Also noted, was the condition of council land on the corner of Pococks Road and the State Highway, with some concern that this might be a fire hazard. Council is currently preparing tender documents for the lease of this land.

Areas of maintenance needed around the township were noted, including the new walking track beside the highway and the bowling green in the reserve. Staff noted that mowing is not completed to a set frequency, but when needed and will check that mowing is carried out when required around the township. The cracked slide in the reserve was noted to be replaced.

Three children from Springfield School attended, to say thank you to Council for the recent Picnic in the Park event and reported that Springfield is the ‘best place to live’.

Other topics mentioned, included the excellent work of the hall caretaker, the upcoming revision of community committees, the need for a dedicated carpark for the EV charger, the misuse of the recycling bins at the toilets and the closure of NEXT DROP-IN SESSION submissions to the Environment Monday 12th April 2021 Canterbury Plan, on 11th April.

2021 SHOW PRESIDENT - RICHARD HILL This year’s Malvern A & P Show President Richard Hill, Hill is now in his third year in this position.

“I stayed in the President’s role, not only because I thoroughly enjoyed it, but also because we are suffering a little from a lack of young people coming through,” Richard explained.

“Three years in, this role allows some continuity and we do need to stay relevant with today’s times, wherever we can.

“The trick is to have a great mix, balancing the old and new.

The next generation need to get on board, so that we can embrace new ideas and technology, while still keeping

the traditional features.

Richard has a long rural history in the area having, along with wife Anna, Anna lived in the Malvern district for over thirty years.

“My first job in Selwyn was manager at Dry Acheron, following that I was self employed as a fencing contractor and livestock scanner.

“We moved around the district living in Glentunnel, Greendale and Sheffield until 1997, when we leased a farm at Homebush.

We continued our scanning business, as well as farming and lived there for eight years.

“Then we took on the lease of

Jack Richard has been involved with the Malvern A & P Show for the last seventeen years, starting as a convenor in the poultry section.

“This was a section I thoroughly enjoyed, I met some great people in an area that I had never really had anything to do with. I then moved to the hunter rounds about ten years ago and also became involved in the entertainment segment of the event.

“The Show is a constant work in progress. The committee and I are constantly trying to boost the quality level. We’ve done our own research and development, attending numerous Shows checking out trade and food sites. Approaches were made to suitable vendors and it can be reported that there was a good level of success,” he said.

“The ringside ‘President’s Marquee’ will again accommodate older patrons, along with judges’ lunches. This makes the Show more inclusive, and allows older folk to more easily see entertainment in the ring. The children’s playground in the Domain has now been moved and there is much activity around the space that once contained it.

“We’ve worked hard to make the Show ‘user-friendly’ and make the main ring the centre of excitement and entertainment.

“Check out the entertaining equestrian Brick Wall and Three Bar event in the main ring. Not

forgetting the motorised Rev and Ride, which always keeps spectators entertained on the sidelines.

“We have also invited two Judges who will be looking for the Champion of Champions winners (from Flowers/Produce and Livestock) for the Supreme Produce Award, as they make their way around the Show grounds.

“This year we are introducing the Supreme Livestock Exhibit Award, which will receive a new trophy kindly donated by the late T.D. Anderson.

“We’re looking forward to using our own newly purchased Malvern A & P Show marquee, thanks to funding from the centennial fund.

“Our gone-live website has been really well received,” Richard continued.

“It was produced by my daughter Sarah and has been a wonderful tool to keep people informed.

“I’m thrilled to see we are attracting a few fresh, young faces in the entertainment and trade sections, along with the Gift Lamb class also. This will hopefully ensure the Show’s continuity and bring some innovative ideas to the table also.

“I firmly believe rural shows are a great way for communities to get together. It always amazes me the effort that so many people voluntarily put into their neighbourhood, so that the

Show can go on.

“There is an enormous amount of work that has to be done before an event like this, with each section being responsible for their own preparation.

Though we do have monthly meetings to discuss and monitor progress. In the week leading up to the event, there are two main working bees, but really the whole week is taken up with Show preparation.

New Secretary Lucy Shaw, Shaw has been extremely busy with the schedule, processing entries and social media promotions all necessary for a successful Show. While there is someone in charge of each section, it is the job of Show President and Vice President to make sure each section has what they need and are supported to get the job done.

“My role as President is really to enjoy the day, meeting and greeting as the Show figurehead, while ensuring judges, committee members and other dignitaries are appreciated, acknowledged and feel welcome,” Richard stressed.

“We’re expecting a high standard of Show entries and exhibits for our 122nd Show,” Richard concluded.

MP LOOKING FORWARD TO SHOW Autumn has rolled around and with that, the A & P Show season. After last year’s cancellation, I am, like everyone, really looking forward to getting back to the Malvern Show.

It’s going to be a big week for the area, with the South Island Agricultural Field Days running across the three days beforehand, in Kirwee and what better place to showcase the absolute best of Canterbury’s agriculture sector, than right here in Malvern?

I have nothing but enormous admiration for our farmers and growers, and the extraordinary lengths they go to, to feed and clothe the world in the most sustainable, environmentally conscious way possible. It is no small ask to try and farm your way to whatever new environmental standard, or regulation this Government (seemingly) arbitrarily imposes on any given day.

There are two pieces of legislation which will really affect the regions, and all the rural families and communities they support. The first is the so-called Action for Healthy Waterways and the resulting National Policy Statement on Freshwater Management (NPSFM). It includes compliance rules around nitrates in water, fencing, farm environment plans and fertiliser application, that regional councils will be required to enforce.

Most would agree, that while some aspects of the proposals could be progressed relatively easily, there are others that will

hamper the ability for the agricultural sector to continue to lead the country’s economic recovery.

Ashburton District Council commissioned an economic impact report, that found farm profitability will decline by $57.9 million and farm expenditure by $139 million across the district.

1,233 fewer people will be employed, because of the decrease in farm expenditure, and the uncertainty and complexity of the regulations will undermine business confidence.

I have read a very sensible letter penned by the chairs of the regional Federated Farmers back in September, seeking an exemption for Canterbury from the rules, given the huge advances already being made by local farmers under the Canterbury Water Management Strategy. As I understand it, neither Minister Parker, Parker nor Minister O’Connor have replied.

The second test for the sector, is the Climate Change Commission’s recommendations to reduce the country’s carbon emissions. While many recommendations are achievable, they will demand a fundamental shift in land use application. It’s expected that, from 2025, up to 2,000 hectares of land per year will be converted from dairy to horticulture, while pastoral farmers will likely have to reduce stock by at least 15 percent.

The task before us is monumental. Reaching net zero emissions in 30 years, is hugely

ambitious for a country that earns half of its export income from the primary sector.

New Zealand needs an effective plan that is based on practical, sensible solutions. We can’t afford to waste money on policies that won’t make a genuine dent in emissions. What is patently obvious in both examples, is there has been very little consultation with local expertise and zero appetite from the Government to implement tailored, regional solutions.

We all want to, and need to, improve the environment, but let’s take a ground up approach, rather than topdown. As we’ll see at the Show, there is plenty to celebrate.

Recently Lucy Shaw took on the role of Malvern A & P Show Secretary, after applying for the position from an advert she noticed on Facebook. A few people had tagged her in the post as well thinking she would be suitable for the role, so it must have been fate!

In previous years Lucy had attended the Show as a competitor in equestrian classes and as a spectator, but until now had not had any other form of involvement with the Show.

Lucy was raised and attended school and University, in Christchurch. After finishing her BA at Canterbury University she headed overseas, where she worked and travelled for a few years. On her return she received a Graduate Diploma in Event Management and went onto work in the industry, based in Christchurch. Sick of being office-bound, she took an opportunity from a friend to begin calf rearing, near Oxford.

This is where she met her husband Jonny.

Jonny After a few years, they crossed to this side of the river, where Jonny was born and bred. Their daughter Sophie is nearly three and they have another baby due in July.

“I have a passion for farming and animals, I feel lucky to bring our children up in such a great rural community. I have ridden and competed with horses since I was a child and continue to (when not pregnant or busy with the show!). I have a lot to do with my local pony club and I am an Equestrian Sport New

Zealand (ESNZ) Eventing Cross Country Course designer,” Lucy explained.

Before show day, Lucy has a lot of paperwork, emailing, sending out application forms for trade sites, processing those applications, gathering and processing entries and payments. Making bookings, sending letters and tickets, dealing with daily show enquiries, plus many more jobs!

“Every month we have a committee meeting, so I am in charge of the agenda and taking/typing up minutes,” Lucy commented.

Lucy is not one hundred percent sure about what show day will be like for her yet, but she knows she will be busy!

“I will be around the week leading up to the show, although I will mostly be busy with late entries and gathering and collecting things needed for the day. The convenors of individual sections take charge of the setting up of their own

areas and from what I understand, everyone joins in and works hard to get it all done.

After the Show, Lucy will have banking, results and thank you letters to write, so her job continues even when the Show is over!

“We are fortunate to have an excellent committee of hardworking individuals. Some of them have been involved for many years, these members hold a lot of knowledge about the community and the Show, and some are new to the committee. I am lucky to have the support of these dedicated members.

So far, Lucy has found her role really good! She enjoys interacting with the Malvern community and getting involved in the organisation, of what will be a great show.

“I am really looking forward to 2021 Show Day, so far it is shaping up to be a great show,” Lucy concluded.

MESSAGE OF SUPPORT What an awesome four days we have to look forward to, between the 24th - 27th of March. I am delighted that the South Island Agricultural Field Days can take place this year, in particular, as this show celebrates its 70th anniversary and to have the Malvern A & P Show follow on, during the same weekend is terrific. The past year has shown us that the agricultural industry is front and centre of New Zealand’s economy, with Canterbury right at the heart of the industry. With over eighty thousand people employed in agriculture, it’s a vital source of employment and offers so many opportunities for those

who are keen to carve out a career from the land.

Showcasing the absolute best of the industry is a fantastic way of bringing together suppliers and those that rely on the ever-developing technology, across all parts of the agriculture community. Having the chance to see cutting edge technology put to the test and to get some hands-on experience, is what these shows are all about.

But it’s not just about the tech, these events offer such an amazing experience for the whole family, from stalls and exhibitions, to competitions and great food. Fingers crossed

MANY HANDS TO HELP Along with pre-Show working bees it’s all hands on deck as the day draws closer.

For the last few years, students from the Rural College at Darfield High School, have been assisting the committee in the initial set-up on Monday morning.

“I assist Rural College Head Teacher Rex Smith, Smith in driving one of the School minivans, transporting students to and from the Sheffield Domain,” commented Committee member, Melissa Jebson.

“Rural College students also assist on Show morning as Stewards, in both the Equestrian and Sheep sections.

“It is great to have these students on board and they get a first-hand idea of the logistics involved in preparing and setting up for this annual, community event,” concluded Melissa.

“They are extremely helpful, and it's a great way to get young people involved,” Richard Hill said.

“I would like to thank all

sponsors who have come on board this year. We cannot run the Show without the support of our sponsors, some who sponsor every year and some who are new this year.

“Lastly I’d also like to thank Chris and Rachel Benny who allow us the continued use of their land surrounding the Showgrounds. Without the extra space for parking etc we just wouldn’t have the room required to run an organised event such as this,” Richard concluded.

ROVING COMMENTARY After entries are set up Melissa Jebson has a quick outfit change, before heading out into the Main Ring to collect her roving microphone.

“I then spend the rest of the day interviewing trade exhibitors, competitors and Judges; announcing results, broadcasting what is on and points of interest throughout the Showgrounds,” Melissa commented. “I am very ably assisted by Stuart Baxter, Baxter who is in his fiftieth year of announcing at the Malvern A & P Show. Stuart will be on deck in the caravan, marshalling

Trick and stunt rider, Sonia Duncan on ‘Duke’ the third trick horse that Sonia has trained and he is the only Morgan trick horse in NZ. It was an ad in the local paper that first attracted Sonia Duncan to her life-long passion of trick and stunt riding. Part of a team of four for years, Sonia then taught her own horses and does displays around NZ. She has ridden and performed in TV programmes and movies; including Liv Tylers riding stunt double in The Lord of the Rings; The Fellowship, TV series The Tribe, with her thoroughbred where Antonia Prebble rode her and Trick Riding in the touring horse show, The

Man from Snowy River in Australia.

Come along to the Malvern A & P Show and see trick riding and see how its done up close and in person. Trick riding is an equestrian sport that the Americans have been doing since at least the 40's and 50's.

The tricks have come from the Circus, Russian Cossacks and the Mounted Calvery and been put together for entertainment. Its not commonly seen in NZ as very few people do it here.

Melissa also has considerable experience with the microphone, having been involved with the Show in many ways over the year. “I first announced at the Malvern Show in 1992 and joined the Malvern A & P Show Committee in 1993, was President in 2013 and still assist on the Committee when I am available,” she concluded.

FUTURE OF A & P SHOWS The New Zealand Royal Agricultural Society (RAS), is the parent body of ninety three A & P Shows, plus fifty seven Breed Societies. They have set the Health and Safety Guidelines, Equestrian Rules, Clean Sport Testing, plus Administrators’ Guidelines, to name but a few initiatives that assist Show Committees, in this challenging economic climate. The Society has a National Executive, plus six District Committees who support individual Associations.

“The agricultural climate is up and

down, but in many rural areas, A & P Shows are the major community events that still exist,” Melissa Jebson, Jebson of the Malvern A & P Association explained.

“The Malvern Show is no exception and the Committee is relatively strong at present, with a good blend of youth and enthusiasm, mixed with old experienced heads,” she added.

“We are all here for the right reasons and moving with the times, to celebrate our Malvern area and showcase excellence through the Showing movement,” Melissa concluded.

MEMORIES OF BYGONE SHOWS Although Cecily Wright (Cec Cec) Cec will turn ninety six in May this year, the avid showgoer (since the age of ten), doesn’t plan to miss this year’s event. Cec grew up in Darfield, before moving to Sheffield, commenting that she’s witnessed many, many changes at the Malvern A & P Show over the years.

The Wright family has had a considerable involvement with the Malvern Show throughout the decades, of note was Cec’s late husband George Wright, Wright who was a Patron. There have also been five generations of Wrights to previously hold the position of President, G.F. Wright, Wright L.T. Wright, Wright G.E. Wright, Wright D. Wright, Wright and P. Wright.

Wright In her younger years, Cec was heavily involved with 14.2 hand ponies, attending many shows and competing in (and trying to win) some of the ‘local’ classes.

“These local classes were always fiercely contested and I really loved competing with the ponies,” Cec commented enthusiastically.

Back before it took a break during the war years, the Show was held on a Thursday, Cec recalled.

After the war numerous changes came into effect, one of which was the change to staging the event on a Saturday.

The Malvern A & P Show also used to be the last show of the season and was held in April.

This timing often resulted in a cold, wet, miserable Show day.

Currently the Oxford A & P Show is the last for the season.

“Over the years, the size of the Machinery section has dramatically increased, probably due to the area being predominantly mixed cropping and livestock,” Cec said.

“Another big change from the early days are the food vendors at the Show. Nowadays, we have a wide and varied selection of food available, whereas in the past Showgoers enjoyed their picnics and the only catering was for judges and officials.”

Cec recalls their car backed up ringside, with the boot full of picnic goodies to be enjoyed while watching the action in the ring. Over the ensuing years, Cec has helped with many Show day afternoon teas - very different from those prepared today, as back then they involved boiling the copper for hot water!

“The Grand Parade was always a highlight for those who attended the Show and still is today,” Cec said.

She had ridden to the Malvern A & P Show, competed throughout the day, but spent the night in Waddington rather than undertake the longer ride home after her exhaustive Show day.

“Transport to the Show has definitely changed over the years. Previously horses and ponies used to be ridden to the Show, often with additional gear being taken by a horse and carriage. Sheep were droved and as it was easier to move a large mob, rather than a small one, it was generally a big flock that made its appearance at the Show grounds.

“Recently the Cattle section has been moved from its usual position and is now in the disused bowling green area,” Cec told the News.

“The number of trophies available for Show successes has also grown over the years; which is keeping up both with the times and with the Show’s growth.

Back years ago, there was a very dark wooden pavilion in the Domain - it was a three room, plain building that sat where the new children’s playground is now. The current Pavilion, for which a massive amount of fundraising was undertaken in Sheffield - including a Mardi Gras in 1976, which raised $35,000 - has created a big change in the Show as we know it today,” she said.

Cec has exceptionally fond memories of riding to the Show, especially one year when she rode with a Riding School from Christchurch to the event.

“That year Mrs Bushell drove the gig with all the gear in it,” she remembered.

Cec has seen a great many changes in the Malvern A & P Show over the years, but it has always been an annual highlight, plus a community day out for numerous locals and visitors. Cec is looking forward to attending the annual Show, all going well.

For over fifty years, the Sheffield Garden Club have been involved with the Malvern A & P Show, supervising and organizing judges for the flower and children’s sections.

The Club also undertakes promotion to attract entries for the flower section, as well as visiting to schools to encourage students to enter in children’s classes. They have also, in the past, presented demonstrations to assist those considering entry.

“At the Garden Club, we encourage people to place entries, especially staging flowers. This includes floral art, often with the help of experts in the field,” Sheffield Garden Club member, Judith EarlEarlWilliams commented.

“Cut flowers and dahlia entries are very strong, but of course good entries depend on the season. Roses and dahlias are especially affected.”

“The ‘Decorative’ class is always superb,” Judith said, “with the novice section of this area, often producing great offerings as well.”

The Club is well sponsored locally for the children’s section, but disappointingly a few classes have been deleted due to lack of support. However, there are still a couple of classes available for children aged from preschool to Year 6, such as; ‘Flowers on a dinner plate’ and ‘Flowers in a child’s gumboot’. There is no charge

to enter these sections and parents are encouraged to support their children to take part.

Two days before the Show, the Garden Club will hold a working bee to put up tables, put cloths in place and get the vases ready.

“We don’t ask for any assistance, apart from our Club members,” Judith said.

“On the Friday before the Show, exhibitors can stage their entries in the early evening.”

On Show day, Garden Club members help those exhibiting

to stage their entries, should this be required. Members steward, assist the judges with judging and count points for the all important results. The Club also organises morning tea for their judges and stewards in the shed, on the day. Then at 4pm, members help clear the shed and vases.

The Garden Club is, as always, looking forward to the Show.

“We hope to see lots of people checking out the produce shed and viewing all the spectacular exhibits on display,” Judith concluded.

ART SECTION Part of Jodie Miller’s Miller role as convenor of the Art section, is to liaise with local Malvern schools and preschools, as well as to contact potential sponsors. Jodie became involved in this area after helping the previous convenor, Michelle Webster, Webster over four years ago. Having an interest in art and wanting to get involved in the community, it was the ideal place to start for Jodie.

“As Michelle's workload increased in other Show sections, I agreed to take full responsibility a couple of years ago - although I'm still checking details and getting advice,” Jodie laughed!

Originally from Otago, Jodie moved to Canterbury when she was a teenager and has lived locally for around sixteen years. “I'm known for being the school bus driver (initially for Sheffield Primary and now for Darfield High School), but have also worked as a teacher aide and in 2019 completed a Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (Primary). I’m currently doing a three job juggle between bus driving, teaching art classes at Creative Sparks and relief teaching. I have two teenage boys, one attending DHS and the other who finished Year 13 last year," she explained.

“Both the School and Open Art sections’ prizes are 100% donated and we have had great support over the years, which has enabled us to offer some awesome prizes to place winners. I collect the school art, hang it up (with help

from volunteers), write out certificates, take art down after the Show, assign prizes and return the entries and prizes to schools,” Jodie said.

“The Show’s Open Art section is showing strong growth, partly due to the popularity of the local art school, but also because the area is rich in talented artists, both young and old. While we do get artists who enter their work each year, there is definitely an increase in first time contributors. Hopefully they enjoy the experience so much they keep creating, showing their masterpieces and spreading the word,” she added.

The Art section tries hard to be flexible with entries, especially the ones from schools. If a suitable section to accommodate intended, submitted work, isn’t available one will be created for it!

A new addition is the Cultural Art section, which is being enthusiastically embraced by our local schools. This section encourages entries of art and construction. At the Show in 2019, there was a spectacular array of poi, along with some stunning oil pastel drawings.

This year the Open Section is having a last minute addition of a Digital Art section as well.

Jodie hopes that by Show day (all going well), the hard work will be completed for this section, until after the event.

She hopes this will give her a chance to check out other sections of the Show and perhaps spend some time with friends and family.

As Show day ends, Jodie will begin taking down the art displays. With multiple schools and preschools involved, this requires more than a bit of coordination, so there’s not a massive sort-out to be done later at home!

“I'm lucky to have a few helpers, to tackle the more than 3,000 staples that need to be removed, without damaging any student's work. As the shed is also used for storage, the art section has to be cleared by the end of Show day, so there is a wee bit of pressure! I'm usually sweaty, dusty and more than a bit knackered by the time I’m finished for the day,” she said with a smile. “There is a lot to do both before and after the Show, which I do my best to get involved with around my work commitments. I always turn up on the day after the Show to help with the clean-up and give back to those who have helped me with my section,” Jodie said.

“I think that the A & P Show is a valuable opportunity to showcase the talents and diversity of the community, as well as being a safe and family friendly day of fun. I have hopes that the Malvern A & P Show will continue to be a much anticipated event on the local calendar, for many years to come,” she concluded.

As well as encouraging school entries in Art sections, the Malvern A & P Show committee want to encourage more entries in all children’s classes, including the giant pumpkin competition. This is the reason the 2021 Show will launch the Farmlands School Cup, which has kindly been donated by Farmlands and sponsored by the Barnhill Family.

Family After discussion with educators in the community, the committee have formed a new

competition which they hope will boost further participation from youngsters. This new initiative is a great way for children in the area, to not only do well for the collective good of their school, but also to compete in their own right. Malvern students who are twelve years and under can enter for themselves individually, as well as for their school, There are no entry fees for these students and late entries will be taken up to show day.

The school or educator who gains the highest combined tally for eligible classes, will be presented at a later date with the Farmlands Cup, as well as $150 prize money.

The Malvern and Courtenay A & P Shows run a combined Winter Feed Competition, which is held in June. The Malvern Show’s Immediate Past President, Guy Bassett, Bassett has helped organise the event for over fifteen years.

Each paddock has a sample measured, to give an estimated dry matter value, in conjunction with an assessment of the uniformity and quality of the

whole paddock. There are a variety of classes, which include dryland and irrigated pasture, through to kale and beet crops.

The quality and quantity of prizes is fantastic, and the organisers thank the sponsors for continuing to support this local event.

The Bassett family are regular dog classes, which was a family show entrants and this year highlight. daughter Jessica has entered the baking section, mum Jenny and son Charlie are taking part in the Photography section and also a new entry in the hound dog section with Milo, as the well-known Diesel has sadly passed away. Diesel had patiently dressed up over the years as a sheep, angel, police dog, ballerina and presidential dog (to tie in with Guy’s year as Diesel dressed as the President). One year Diesel was Presidential Dog when awarded Best Exhibit over all Guy was President.

YOUNG FARMER CONVENOR This year’s Tasman Regional Final Convener is Cheyenne Wilson, Wilson from the Christchurch Young Farmer Club.

She is a busy lady juggling her time between dairy farming, managing a young stock farm and studying a Bachelor of Commerce at Lincoln University.

Being a keen hunter, she enjoys disconnecting from the world and spending time in the back country, as well as working with rangatahi (young people), to showcase all the opportunities available in the agriculture, food and fibres sectors.

Cheyenne grew up (with her four siblings) in rural, Western Southland and attended Central Southland College, in Winton.

She has always been involved with many different groups - is currently on the Board for the ‘Meat the Need’ charity, is Secretary for Te Awhioraki (the Lincoln University Maori Student Association), does some part time work for DairyNZ - speaking to Limited Service Volunteers

about opportunities in the Dairy sector and is often asked to speak about her experiences in the industry. Cheyenne has also made videos with Farmstrong, is a member of the Zonta Club of Christchurch South, and is involved with many other groups and organisations.

When she shifted to Canterbury, almost six years ago and didn't know many people, she decided to head along to her local Young Farmers Club (Hinds, at that time), to meet like-minded people in her area. At the second meeting she attended, she stood for the Secretary position and was successful.

After a year in the role, she stepped up to the position of Chairperson.

“When I moved to North Canterbury, I was co-opted onto the Tasman Regional Executive Committee and am now in the role of Senior Vice-Chair, as well as being a delegate on the National Committee and for the North Canterbury Federated Farmers,” Cheyenne commented.

“My goal this season, is to encouraging future leaders in the industry to develop their skillsets. I want to create an environment that will allow members in the region to grow and understand more about the contest, while creating strong connections and networks. I hope to help connect members within the region with industry leaders, potential employers and mentors, while building everlasting friendships.

“T he plann ing for th e competition has been going well, the Malvern Show Committee are extremely enthusiastic about us being there on the day and are more than willing to help us.

“I have a great team of young and enthusiastic members, many are from the Lincoln Young Farmers Club and I have some guidance from a few experienced members. It is a great opportunity for many of the younger members to get a really good understanding of the contest.

“We are aiming to get the best contestant to represent the Tasman Region at the Grand Final in July. We want to test the contestant's range of skills.

“Without giving too much away, I could mention that people can expect our contest to look a little different to previous years - but we can't let anyone know what to prepare for prior to the event, so I can't discuss specifics in case I give too much away,” Cheyenne concluded.

FMG YOUNG FARMER OF THE YEAR The FMG Young Farmer of the Year Tasman Regional Final, will kick off at the Malvern A & P Show in Sheffield. Eight Regional Finalists will battle it out, in a series of eight modules and two practical head to head challenges.

Only one contestant will walk away with the $12,000 winning prize package and make it through to the July Young Farmer of the Year, Grand Final to be held in Christchurch.

Tasman is shaping up to be an exciting Regional Final, it has been reported. It features a competitive couple going head to head, the youngest competitor in the whole Young Farmer of the Year contest and a double Prime Minister’s

Half of Tasman’s Regional Finalists are made up from one Club - Lincoln University Young Farmers, making it the biggest club representation.

The whole contest is based around five areas; technology, environment, people, food and innovation - aimed to test each contestant’s strengths and weaknesses.

Farming is no longer just animal husbandry, fencing and practical skills. The whole primary sector is based around those pillars, but every facet of technology and innovation is required to be able to produce food for millions of people.

AGRIKIDS COMPETITION AgriKids is part of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year contest and this year will make an appearance at the Malvern A & P Show. It’s a fun and innovative competition for primary school children, aged eight to thirteen years old.

Contestants compete in teams of three at each regional final across the country, tackling a series of practical and theoretical modules, alongside the FMG Young Farmer of the Year contest.

The top three teams from this event go through to the AgriKids Grand Final, to be held in Christchurch during July. They will compete against twenty one other teams, testing their team work and problem solving skills.

“Starting them young learning

about the primary sector and where their food comes from, aims to excite and stimulate children from both town and country,” commented one of the organisers.

Only one team can be crowned AgriKids Grand Champions.

TEENAG COMPETITION TeenAg is a vibrant network of secondary school clubs, with the purpose of teaching students about agriculture and showcasing careers in the primary industry.

Club members are eligible to compete in the FMG Junior Young Farm of the Year contest in pairs, at each regional final like the one taking place at the Malvern A & P Show.

Peter O’Connor - 22 years old Lincoln University YFC. In 2020, he finished a Bachelor of Agricultural Science, with Honours at Lincoln University. He was an FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year Grand Finalist in 2016 and this will be his second Regional Final.

Liam Alley - 26 years old Dunsandel YFC, he is second in charge on a 1,050 cow dairy farm.

Liam spent a year at Taratahi Agricultural Centre, receiving level five qualifications in Production Management.

This is Liam’s first time competing.

Roshean Woods - 30 years old Christchurch YFC, she completed a Doctorate and a Bachelor of Science with Honours at Lincoln University. Working with commercial farms, farmers and date, she writes up results for scientific papers and translates research for us to understand.

She has competed in seven district contests before getting through to her first Regional final.

U3A Malvern, on March 12th, were very fortunate to have Margaret Copland from Kirwee speaking. Margaret is a professional storyteller who has performed in festivals in Australia and New Zealand and twice toured the United States.

Through her stories Margaret told of the Polish immigrants who came to New Zealand in 1872 and settled in Marshlands. A descendant herself, she has been awarded a medal by the Polish Government for her stories of Polish immigrants.

Those who were not able to be at U3A missed an amazingly, powerful and enlightening talk about the discrimination, hard work and tough lives of these early immigrants.

Another fantastic touch season has just concluded, having run smoothly from October 2020 to March 2021. With no hiccups organisers found this a very satisfying achievement, given the trying circumstances due to Covid-19.

The junior grades were again up on player numbers, with around 200 children taking part over the Mini’s, Emerging, Developing and Intermediate formats. It is such an awesome sight, seeing so many locals having loads of fun and enhancing their skills. Thanks to the parents and students who stepped up each week to coach, referee and manage teams.

Without this support, it would not be possible to deliver the programme to so many. Special thanks to Marge and Stacey (Marge & Stacey’s Gourmet Burgers), for their support of player of the day awards, which are presented to Juniors each week - your support is greatly appreciated.

This season, the three senior grades had a total of 22 teams - comprising of high school aged teams, social teams and competitive teams. Thank you to the referees for your effort and commitment each week.

It is great to see the junior grade continuing to grow and the lasting support in the senior

grades. All of this is delivered by a very small group of people, who commit a significant amount of time each week to make sure games happen.

Darfield got the ‘kick up the pants’ they needed from a spirited Lincoln side, before they take on Leeston-Southbridge in the semi-final, this weekend.

Batting first, on another wellprepared pitch at Darfield, the Lincoln batters made a great start, with Joe Williams smacking 56, from 59 balls and Arthur Patterson helping himself to 71 runs, from 76 balls. In fact, Lincoln's top four batters contributed 210 runs towards their team's total of 251 and that's before you add the 23

wides, gifted by Darfield's sometimes way-ward bowlers.

Zak Foulkes and Ryan Hughes managed to pick up two wickets each, but even they would admit, they didn't bowl enough balls at the stumps and as a result Lincoln were able to post a great total, perhaps their best batting performance of the season. A good achievement from a side that was yet to record a win for the whole oneday competition.

Greendale's T20 season has come to a successful end with numbers swelling each week, to the point where we had to turn away half a team of keen cricketers. Greendale joined with a few lads from Sheffield and entered a T20 team, in the Selwyn T20 8-a-side competition post Christmas.

With a very shaky start to the T20 format, we were 4 down for 2 runs, in 2 overs, of our first game against Dunsandel Stags.

For the remaining games of the round, we had a much better time with the bat and managed to field defendable totals. Our catches started sticking, which helped our bowlers end a couple of games early.

With this form, we were honoured to have reached the final for our pool, playing against Dunsandel Stags again.

Having only lost one game each, the Stags went in as the favourites. The Stags batted first and Greendale bowled pace and swing, with no rewards after

10 overs. The openers looked to gain their 50's easily, until Jonny Anderson came on in the 12th over and tempted Don Lough (28) into putting a catch up, then two balls later Jonny got Evan Seymour for a two ball duck! The young Greendale lad ended up getting 3-30 and was the pick of the bowlers, with the support of our 'solid as ever' Regan Dalley, Dalley keeping economy down with 1-16. Top run scorers for the Stags were, Matthew Davidson 50 off 48, retired and Brynley Riches 35 not out.

Greendale began their chase of 149, with Tom Shipley posting 51 off 43, retired. Sean Mulligan (31) was cruising alongside Tom, until he was taken by an unbelievable caught and bowled

by Phillip Wolf (2-25).

The winning partnership was Regan Dalley (23 not out) and Finn Buick (17 not out) scoring the winning runs, with 5 balls to spare, 149-4.

The pair put on a good partnership until Innes was out, caught trying to loft one over the offside, only for it to limply fall into mid-offs hands. With 165 runs in the bank and less than 90 still to get inside 13 overs, Darfield were still in with a chance, but Collins fell the very next ball.

The required run rate of 7 per over for the last stretch was too much for the tail-enders, despite Lincoln feeding the hosts 21 wides for the innings. Darfield

EMAIL COLUMN An old lady walked into a pet store, found a parrot and asked the owner if she could buy it.

The owner said, “Heck no! That parrot has a bad mouth!

Trust me, you do not want that parrot!”

She said, “I can teach it good manners.”

But, when she got home the parrot said a bad word, so she put it in the freezer for 10 seconds.

She took it out and said, “Did you learn your lesson?”
