Raupītia ngā Tamariki - Cherish our Children, was the key message at Children’s Day, held at Trinity Church Darfield, on Sunday, March 7th. Children and their families came from Rolleston, West Melton, Darfield, Greendale, Sheffield and Springfield, to be blessed at the Celebration Service. Music was provided and led by the Sunday School's Children's Praise Orchestra, with Rev. Dr Tom Innes on guitar and Maureen Frew playing the organ. There were fun and exciting stations including a bouncy castle, face painting, decorating goody bags, music area, egg and spoon race and looking at the sun through a special telescope - seeing the incredible solar flares. Sunday was such a celebration of God's forever love, which was evident on everyone's faces! “God answers prayers,” was a comment made by many, as Level 1 allowed us to exceeded 100 people. There was no wind so we could have the bouncy castle and the skies were clear so we could see the sun through Uncle Simon's Simon special telescope. There were smiles all around, as

On Sunday, March 14th, the Darfield Fire Brigade will be holding an Open Day at the Fire Station, on North Terrace. All members of the community are welcome to join them between 10am and 2pm. Both, the Urban and Rural teams will be in attendance, with the different vehicles and specialist equipment they use when responding to emergencies within our community. With the merging of the Urban and Rural teams, there are plans in the pipeline to build a new facility to house vehicles and equipment, so that both brigades can work together with ease and respond from the same area. The concept plans for this new facility will be available for viewing on the day.

People will be able to learn about the importance of having an escape plan in case of a house fire. Brigade members will be available to chat about fire safety around the home, for both lifestyle blocks and rural aspects. There will be an opportunity to sign up for a home fire safety visit where members can check out your smoke alarms and make sure they are in good working order. There will be displays of interest for all, both young and old.

Find your way through the escape tunnels in the custommade inflatable display and try out the virtual reality headsets. A bouncy castle and lolly scramble will keep the kids entertained and there'll be a sausage sizzle, tea, coffee and cold refreshments available for all. Head on down, have a look at the vehicles and equipment, learn about fire safety and have a chat about what the Brigade does. They would love to see you there.

St John is present in local communities in more ways than just the yellow, or white ambulances that are here when you need them most. A First Aid Training course will once again be on offer, on March 20th, in Darfield. This is a Level 1 course meeting Workplace needs, but it is being organised for Darfield district, supported by the Local Area Committee, as a way of saying thanks to our community. Previous tutors have said, “Your skills are often those that save lives, you come across the situation, deal with it as best you can and then you call us!” This is so very true, it is important that you are able to do this and training always

helps common sense. First Aiders are often the initial responders on the scene of any number of incidents and it is their lifesaving skills, that will be of real benefit to patient care. To avoid thinking, “What if?” Is a real bonus. If you can approach a scene, figure out what you can do and then start helping a person who needs you, in even the simplest of ways before other help arrives can make an immense difference to the outcome. We are never equipped for all eventualities, but often a trigger of previously gained knowledge, means we can be of real benefit to the situation. This can be at home, while recreating, or just simply passing by when

something happens in front of you. Many of you will be involved in small businesses or part of a larger team, whether it’s a sports team, or just part of an active family. This course will equip you with life-saving skills and build confidence, rewarded by being able to help others in need. What a great deal! Please support this course. But better, use the skills you learn to help those that may be in need, in the community around you. Training becomes an important link in helping others.

The Pork Pie Charity Run is a biannual fundraising road trip for mini owners, which is taking place from March 26th to 31st. This year’s event will raise funds for KidsCan, who work closely with early childhood centres, primary, secondary and high schools, in deciles 1-4, to help provide Kiwi children with the basics they need to get into the classroom and in a position to learn. KidsCan has been in operation since 2005, providing food, clothing, shoes, socks and basic health and hygiene items, to thousands of children affected by poverty, from all around New Zealand. Their vision is a better New Zealand for all Kiwi children. They believe that every child in New Zealand deserves an equal chance to learn and if they arrive in the classroom fed, dry and warm, learning outcomes and participation will increase. The first charity run took place in 2009, with 36 teams making the trip from Kaitaia to Invercargill over five days. The subsequent runs have seen participant numbers increase to a 60 car maximum, with the run extended to six days on the

road. Two school friends Viki McClimont (Darfield local and owner of The Salon in West Melton) and high school teacher Mich el l e Rob erts (from Drummond Southland) make up the team, ‘Mums on the Run’, both being mums to three children. “I thought it would be a bit of fun to get involved in the event, to help raise money for an organisation that supports KidsCan,” Viki commented. ‘Mums on the Run’ will be 1 of 52 other teams in their mini’s, travelling from Pahia to Invercargill. “We have had a lot of support and donations from local businesses in and around Selwyn and Southland. Signbiz in Riccarton kindly donated the printing of the decals for the car which displays all or our sponsors. “We will be documenting trip through our Facebook page: Mums on the Run Pork Pie Charity Run 2021,” Viki concluded. be participating in the Charity Run for the second time. Last time they were meant to drive an original mini, but they only made it five minutes out of Hamilton on the way to start line, when the motor blew up. They ended up printing off new stickers (sponsors names), buying a new mini out of a show room, placing the stickers on before finally made it to the event. They raised over $30,000, the most donations over the week, which all went to KidsCan. This time around they have decided to fix up the original mini, as they feel they owed it to everyone after the last event, to prove that these two big boys could do it. “A huge thank you goes to local Chris Charles, Charles who has spent endless unpaid hours helping to get this mini back on the road. And also Michael Stuart, Stuart another backbone for this mini getting to where it is today. We couldn’t of done it again without them,” team Beef and Brick commented.

The Springfield Station upgrade continues to make progress, as honey bees were recently removed. Builders Terry and Nick Collyns, Collyns who are completing the Station repairs, used a hand saw to cut out two wall panels in a switching room, revealing the two large hives. The bees have been coming and going through two small holes in the window frames. Glynn Cleaver of Kirwee Bees, said the two hives could house approximately sixty thousand bees. “The bees became excited as the extraction began, so Glynn used smoke to relax them as he dug out the combs within the walls,” commented local Simon Williams. Williams “Two queen bees were removed and placed in separate bee boxes outside the building. The idea was that the bees would find their queen, enter the bee boxes and then be taken away,” Simon concluded. Glynn assessed that the bees are currently infected with Varroa mite, but can be treated

during a long period of isolation after which they will join Kirwee Bees stock. Varroa mites are tiny red-brown external parasites of honey bees. Although, Varroa mites can feed and live on adult honey bees, they mainly feed and reproduce on larvae and pupae in the developing brood, causing malformation and weakening of honey bees, as well as transmitting numerous viruses.

In recognition of International Women’s Day (March 8th), National Party spokesperson for Women, Nicola Grigg, Grigg launched a survey looking into the wellbeing of women. “We know that women have been disproportionately impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic in terms of job losses, but what we don’t seem to have a full understanding of, is the overarching psychosocial impact the Lockdown and enduring stress, has had on our wahine,” Nicola commented. “As so many women experienced during Lockdown, they suddenly became the cook, cleaner, carer, homeschooler and general-provider, all while often trying to juggle their own business, or work commitments, or worse, dealing with the stress of sudden unemployment. “I know in my electorate alone, social services are reporting a

spike in demand due to relationship breakdowns, marriage separations and most concerningly, schools and police have reported to me a noticeable rise in family harm incidents. “There has been a disappointing lack of leadership on the issue of women’s wellbeing from the Government, so I am currently mailing out hard copies of a voluntary survey to 25,000 residential addresses, across Selwyn. “It is only by gathering data, that we can begin to understand the issues and therefore, possible solutions.

The survey includes questions like: • What level of stress do you have in your personal life? • What level of support do you feel in your workplace? • Do you have access to counselling or other support? “I will present the findings to the public, Non Governmental Organisations (NGO’), Ministry for Women, and the Government when they are collated later in the year,” Nicola concluded.

World Day of Prayer this year was hosted by women of the Baptist Church. The service was prepared by the women of Vanuatu, with women from all our churches enjoying a morning of reflection, singing, praying and learning of the life, hopes and dreams of the women of Vanuatu. Their theme was ‘Build a Strong Foundation’. Janet Taege enhanced the service with her talk on the time she lived in Vanuatu and the wearing of a dress from there. Over the past 20 years there have been many changes for women in Vanuatu. The gender gap in literacy and education has narrowed and women are usually full-time homemakers, caring for children, elderly and people with disabilities. The World Day of Prayer is a worldwide ecumenical women led movement. Each year different communities participate in this yearly service.

To the Editor: I would like to acknowledge the splendid celebration for Children's Day, held at Trinity Church and organised by the Malvern Cooperating Parish. The many adults present also enjoyed it very much, as they watched the children enjoying the activities. It began with a Children's service led by Lynmaree Sopoaga and Rev. Tom Innes, this was followed by the most amazing array of activities. Morning tea, art and craft, candy floss, bouncy castle, face painting, sausage sizzle, music and egg and spoon races, after which the plastic egg was swapped for an Easter egg. Simon and Christina had a telescope, which you can use in daylight and I had never seen that before, I found that very interesting and exciting. It was beautiful to see so many happy people and was a great boost to everyone, after Covid has affected the lives we have had for the past 12 months. It is not often we can attend such an event, which does not involve making money for the organisers. I would like to say a huge thank you to Lynmaree and her great team of helpers for a wonderful event. Thank you to all the people who helped make so many adults and children very happy.

Understanding changes in legislation can be difficult e n o u g h , a n d w it h t h e Government bringing in new provisions under National Policy Statements and National Environmental Standards, it can be difficult to keep up. At a local level, there are many district and unitary councils going through a plan change process, after their ten year plan review and are making rule and policy changes consistent with national legislative changes. The daunting process of keeping up with this change is important, not only for having your say on any proposed provisions at submission time, but also to understand your ongoing obligations for the lawful operation of your business. There are two key dates in the life of a plan change, that trigger when rules become operative and therefore start to impact your business. The first is when the plan is initially

the rules, there are a suite of rules that have legal effect immediately. These rules relate to the following: protection of water, air or soil for soil conservation, areas of significant indigenous vegetation, significant habitats of indigenous fauna, historic heritage, or aquaculture activities. If you wish to undertake an activity that requires resource consent under these new rules, or in the case of water take and use, discharges to land, air or water, or any coastal activities you need to renew a consent that has an expiry date, you will need to comply with the notified rules if they have immediate legal effect. The second key date in the life of a plan change, is the day that decisions are released. This is after all submissions and further submissions have been received and hearings are complete. The decision makers will release their findings and thirty working

the Environment Court are considered to be operative. This is when rules relating to subdivision and land use consents, such as building placement on properties, use of land for commercial or residential activities out of the designated zone, or any other matter not already legally operative under the first key date. Anyone with an existing land use consent does not have to change what they are doing to fit with the new rules, it is only new activities, or significant changes to existing activities that will be subject to the new land use consent rules. Given Plan Changes can take years to complete and may result in significant changes at key milestones, it is important to be clear about when rules have a legal effect, to ensure you are meeting your legal compliance during the plan change process.

The Sheffield Rugby Football Club’s 125 years celebration will be a fabulous opportunity for people to catch up and reminisce over past and current games. It is a huge milestone and organisers look forward to catching up with those who attend the different events. Below is a little bit of history, and many more stories and details will be shared at the upcoming celebrations. Sheffield Rugby Football Club played its first game, as announced in ‘The Press’ dated Wednesday, 1st July 1896.

“A Football Club has been formed and already has a good membership. To encourage members, the entrance fee is low and practices are frequent. The Club will play a match with Hororata, at the Sheffield Domain next Saturday,10th July 1896.” In a contemporary letter the Sheffielders are referred to as ‘The Reds’, but for 20 - 25 years players appear to have generally played in blue and black jerseys. It seems that the change to the present white jersey and black shorts was made in the early 1920’s. The 1920’s were a golden era, with two senior teams and a junior team playing for Sheffield, this was an indication of the number of young men working in the district in that period. The Team had great backs and an open style of rugby and won the Malvern Competition for seven years.

The strength of the Malvern competition, in the 1920’s, was illustrated by the fact that while Springfield, Sheffield, Darfield, Kirwee, Black Diamonds and Hororata all fielded sides, so did, at times, Greendale and Whitecliffs and in 1924 even Russells Flat fielded a team. Many players drove teams of horses, worked on spuds or the likes then went to rugby covered in dust, played the game and because there were no showers, maybe had a wash in a bucket or creek before going off to celebrate the game. In the early 1970's, Sheffield Seniors played a prison team at Sheffield. The game was tight, Gary Ferg went to kick right from the kick-off, (place kick in those days) and at the last moment swapped and kicked left foot to openside. Pete Jenkins was running flat out, got a good bounce and beat the fullback to score under the posts. The Referee awarded the try and the prisoners were fuming as they weren't paying attention and were not impressed that the try had been awarded. A few plays later, Pete again gets the ball, beats the man and has a crack on the outside, cover defence comes across, Pete does a classic centring kick. They were the first and still the only club from the old Malvern sub union to win this grade. 2021 SOUTH ISLAND AGRICULTURAL FIELD DAYS Michaela McLeod has taken on the role of Chairperson for the South Island Agricultural Field Days (SIAFD) Organising Committee, for the 2021 Event. She has been on the committee for over 10 years now and has performed various roles in her time on the team. Michaela and her husband Ben operate a business running independent agricultura l

research trials. Ben is also a local fencing contractor, as well as being a huge support in the lead up to the event. They live in Ladbrooks and have two children, Joe (4) and Harriet (2). “I really enjoy working with the committee of volunteers, who are amongst some of the hardest working people I’ve come across,” Michaela

commented. “We are a group of 26 members, who all work cohesively as a team to produce the event. Many of which are Malvern locals, but some come from as far afield as Rangiora and Ashburton. “Visitors to the event can expect to see a larger demonstration area this year. Our wor ki ng m ach in ery

demonstrations are a focus for us and we boast the largest demonstrations of any Field Days in the country. “We are happy to be hosting the Dairy Women’s Network and their Country Women Competition over the three days and there will be more sites than in previous events and we have expanded to accommodate these. “We look forward to seeing lots of you there,” Michaela concluded.

I am delighted that the South Island Agricultural Field Days can take place this year, in particular, as this show celebrates its 70th anniversary and to have the Malvern A & P Show follow on, during the same weekend is terrific. The past year has shown us that the agricultural industry is front and centre of New Zealand’s economy, with Canterbury right at the heart of the industry. With over eighty thousand people employed in agriculture, it’s a vital source of employment and offers so many opportunities for those who are keen to carve out a career from the land. Showcasing the absolute best of the industry is a fantastic way of bringing together

suppliers and those that rely on the ever-developing technology, across all parts of the agriculture community. Having the chance to see cutting edge technology put to the test and to get some hands-on experience, is what these shows are all about. But it’s not just about the tech,

these events offer such an amazing experience for the whole family, from stalls and exhibitions, to competitions and great food. Fingers crossed for some great weather, see you there.

2021 SOUTH ISLAND AGRICULTURAL FIELD DAYS After an engaging response to the inaugural Country Women Competition (CWC), at last year’s Amuri Show, the fun, farm focused competition heads to the South Island Agricultural Field Days (SIAFD), to be held on March 24th - 26th. The Kirwee based Agricultural Field Days hosts one of the largest and most interactive demonstration areas in the country, so to have some of the regions most talented rural women also display their capabilities, is a big coup for chairperson Michaela McLeod. McLeod “To be able to highlight the skills and capabilities of the women, who are often the backbone of the Agricultural industry, is a special addition to the SIAFD this year,” Michaela commented. Initially designed by Bex Green, Green Volunteer Regional Leader in North Canterbury, the competition revolves around a series of challenges that give rural women a chance to prove their mettle and demonstrate their talent in the farming sector. “I wanted to see women step up, step out, and be brave in the farming world,” said Bex.

“And the response we had to the CWC was incredible, with twenty women toughing it out last year. “After seeing some incredible skills, tactical thinking and entertaining endeavours, Fran Gunn from North Canterbury, became our inaugural Dairy Women’s Network (DWN) Country Woman of the Year,” Bex concluded. Providing opportunities for ladies to get out there and demonstrate the value of women in the rural sector, is the purpose of the DWN as an organisation. Through workshops, regional events, competitions and conferences, they bring women from around the country together, for shared learning, connection and to provide the support needed to achieve personal and professional goals. This year, volunteer Regional Leader Jordain Adams, Adams is taking the lead for the DWN Canterbury team. Jordain is looking forward to seeing the calibre of competition this year, as she and the rest of the Canterbury team look to broaden its appeal, by taking the competition to the SIAFD.

The Hororata Community Trust Rakaia Basin Glacial History Field Trip took place on Sunday, March 7th, after a nervous week waiting for the change back to Level 1. The field trip took attendees from the Woodlands terminal moraine at Windwhistle, right into the Rakaia Gorge and up to the Mt Algidus Road Lookout, which gave views of glacial lake sediments and meltwater channels. The trip ended looking at the Wairiri Valley, which is believed to be an older Glacial Lake valley. It was a busy field trip with nine stops throughout the day, luckily the weather was sunny and warm, allowing people to fully enjoy the glacial experience. Professor Jamie Shulmeister from University of Canterbury who was the lead Geologist on the field trip commented, “It was wonderful to come back to this area where I have spent so

It was a real joy for me to be able to have 140 people who were interested in learning about it.” Participant Linda Gosling, Gosling from Darfield commented, "It was a wonderful learning opportunity about our beautiful backyard. It is so good to be able to clarify how the landscape was formed and to understand what all the different lines on the rocks showed from a New Zealand perspective. Secondly, the organisation was first class. The coaches were comfortable, the bus driver was lovely and the lunch was yum! Finally, the speakers provided such a wealth of knowledge and were able to answer questions superbly. The trip was part of the Hororata Community Trust's ‘Heritage of Hororata and Beyond' project. Each March the Trust aims to hold a different themed heritage event in the district, this is the fourth event that has taken place. These events promote the district heritage, but also offer fundraising opportunities for local groups, for this field trip the Hororata Primary school catered the lunch. "The Hororata Community Trust is immensely proud to enable our community to host wonderful events like this. Thank you to geologists, Jamie, David and Murray, Murray for giving their time and sharing their knowledge. Thank you to Mike and Karen Meares, Meares who volunteered their time to organise the day. The Hororata community is inviting people to ‘Glow’ with them again this May, when the hugely popular Hororata Glow Festival returns. “This festival is all about giving people a positive experience, that boost we all need going into winter. We want everyone to ‘Glow’,” said Hororata Community Trust Executive Officer, Cindy Driscoll. Driscoll The Hororata Glow Festival will be held at the Hororata Domain on Saturday, May 8th, 2021. “Ballooning Canterbury has partnered with the Trust again and have invited hot air balloon crews from all over New Zealand to take part in the Night Glow, which will again be the main feature of the festival. This is the only event in the South Island, where people can experience hot air balloons glowing in unison to music. New for 2021, following the Night Glow, there will be a dramatic laser light show wowing the crowd, with DJ Craig Shaw cranking the tunes. The festival surrounding the Night Glow and light show will be magical. “One of the standout activities, is the chance to walk inside a giant hot air balloon and chat to the pilots, this was really popular at the last event, so people need to arrive early to experience this. The glowing fairground and glow circus will be back, as well as a fun new area, the UV art zone. The University of Canterbury will be running interactive science demonstrations and people will be able to visit the Mitre 10 warm-up zone. The Hororata Glow Festival will host a range of stalls, different from a craft market, more focused on food, produce and stocking up for winter. There will be a range of

food vendors, offering a multicultural feast. “In 2019, 14,000 people attended this festival, which was an overwhelming response for just our second event. This year, to manage crowd size and Covid-19 requirement’s, we will be limiting numbers to 10,000. Tickets are only available online through Eventfinda, there will be no gate sales. The focus is on providing a great experience for everyone at the Hororata Glow Festival. We know our community can do this.

“The Hororata Glow Festival is all about our community. It provides a platform for community groups to fundraise from, but it also showcases our wonderful district and all it has to offer. This will be a muchneeded boost for all of us, as we grapple with the challenges of Covid-19,” concluded Cindy.

This year, the Environment Canterbury Parks team has organised a Mounted Rogaine and Games event, to be held at the West Melton Forest and Horse Park, on March 14th, celebrating Parks Week (March 6th - 14th). The New Zealand Recreation Association and Parks and Leisure Australia, come

together every year to organise Parks Week, this is to celebrate the vital role parks play in creating liveable cities and thriving communities Anyone can take their horse along to this fun event, they will be given a map to plan their route and navigate between checkpoints, to complete a long or short course. Afterwards,

there will be spot prizes, games and a barbecue with the park rangers. Entrance and parking for this event is off Chattertons Road, West Melton.

An event was planned to be held for the opening of a new dog park, in the Willows area of the Waimakariri River Regional Park, on March 7th, to celebrate Parks Week (March 6th - 14th), but unfortunately, this has been postponed due to Covid-19 Alert Level 2 restrictions still being in place too close to the event. Once it’s safe to do so, a new date will be announced and more information will be available about the new park. "We are creating a great place

for dogs and their owners to explore and exercise, amongst 4.3 hectares of established trees and open spaces, there will also be agility equipment for the dogs to enjoy," commented Team Leader Parks and Forests, James Page. The Willows, at the end of Thompsons Road, off Old West Coast Road in West Melton, has been developed specifically for non-motorized, recreation activities. This development was driven by Environment Canterbury, along

with the Selwyn District Council, to provide recreation and green space opportunities, for the rapidly expanding population. There are picnic and parking areas, fishing points, a motorhome camping area supported by the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association, a walking and cycling trail, and native planting.

Darfield High School Swimming Sports were held on Monday, February 22nd. It was a fantastic day, slightly cool in the morning, but gradually became warm in the afternoon, so they had perfect conditions. The day started with the Learning Centre events, these guys were awesome and swum and paddled a number of widths, thoroughly enjoying themselves. It was great to see so much support from parents/guardians and grandparents, all cheering the competitors on. In the age group events there were some tightly fought races coming down to the wire, and

He was as wide as he is tall and he had this fantastic big belly, that stuck out like a wine barrel. But that’s not what stood out about Jurgen. No... what stood out, was the enormous tattoo he had written across his torso and over his belly…. Just ﬁve letters.... One word.... ‘PIZZA’! So as we were drinking away and getting to know each other, my mind kept wandering back to the tattoo…. What’s the signiﬁcance… What does it mean? Does it represent his social commentary on the state of the world? Is it a pet name? And the longer we sat there drinking, the more determined I was to work it out.
