‘When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade’ - was the perfect way to describe the impromptu triathlon, on Sunday, February 28th. Many local children were so excited for the Weetbix TRYathlon, but with moving into Alert Level 2, the event was cancelled and parents knew the children were going to be devastated! Some amazing families got together and orgainsed a last minute triathlon, in Darfield. The children all had an absolute ball

and the sun even came out to event management and the A great time had by all and play. The event was hosted by words of encouragement for the community spirit won on the Colin and Anna Lee, day. Lee a massive participants. thank you goes to them from the organiser. The course involved the children biking 4 kilometres around McHugh’s Forest, running 1.5 kilometres around Landsborough Drive and finishing with an obstacle course (including a sprinkler and water pistoles) at the Lee’s family home. Also, a huge thanks to all the parents who pitched in with the

Money raised will provide crucial support to blood cancer pa ents around New Zealand

With the Malvern A & P Show fast approaching on Saturday, March 27th, the Committee would like to encourage more young people to get involved with the show, by placing entries in some or all the sections available to them. The committee have been working hard to come up with some ideas to get a competition underway. As a starting point, this year the committee would like children to enter under their own names, and any points earned by the child by winning a first, second or third placing in a class, will go towards their

school. The school with the most points at the conclusion of the judging, will receive the ‘Farmlands Primary School Cup’ which has been kindly donated by Farmlands and $150.00 cash generously donated by the Barnhill Family. Family The committee welcomes feedback on this competition, as it is not ‘set in stone’ for future shows. They would appreciate any ideas schools may have on creating a fun and enjoyable competition, so children get more involved with the show. The entry fee will not apply for

Springfield School turns 150 this year, however instead of planning a jubilee, school is busy working on an imminent rebuild. In 2019, after a thorough investigation of the condition of the Springfield School buildings, the Ministry of Education decided that the school would be totally rebuilt. The buildings, while picturesque, were requiring increasing amounts of maintenance, some parts of the school were undersized for the roll and other aspects were less than ideal for students and staff. The time has come to say goodbye to the old school buildings, as they are scheduled to be demolished to make way for the new block.

The Board of Trustees, together with the staff and students of Springfield School, warmly invite past students, families and members of the local community, to join them at an open afternoon on Friday, March 19th, between 2pm 5pm. Head along to look around, take photos, reminisce over a cuppa and bid the old buildings farewell. “Whilst it is sad to say goodbye to these historic school buildings, we are aware that this is an amazing opportunity. We recognise that the Ministry of Education is making a significant investment into the future of our school and we

However, if entering online there may be some classes which require an entry fee, which will be reimbursed on show day to those age groups eligible. Sometime during the summer, a piece of cricket memorabilia was stolen from the South Malvern Cricket Club Pavilion, at Glentunnel. A cricket counter, which was used by umpires to tally the number of balls bowled in an over, was removed from a picture frame that was displayed in the pavilion and gifted to

Owen Stuart’s picture left alone in the frame, where his cricket counter was kept on display alongside.

One way of marking St Patrick’s Day this year, is to attend the Irish-themed dance that will take place at the Kirwee Community Hall, on Saturday, March 20th. This promises to be a fun-filled night of toe-tapping music, good food and drink, with lots of prizes to be won. Tickets are only $25 per person and are available through various committee members, or at Kirwee Automotive. Tables for six to ten people can be reserved, so get your group together now! The Kirwee Hall has been undergoing renovations to its kitchen, a costly exercise that began with a leak during lockdown last year. The damage was so extensive, that the Hall Association Committee decided it was the right time to undertake the complete renewal of the kitchen facilities, which

the Club by the family of Owen Stuart. Stuart Mr. Stuart was a player, President and Patron of the Club, until he died in 2014 and had owned the counter for most of his life. The frame was crudely cut open at the back and placed back on its hook on the wall with the counter removed. While the counter has little value in a material sense, its value to the Stuart family and the South Malvern Club is priceless (it can accurately be described as a Taonga). The counter is unusual in that it displays 8 digits, because during its production in the 1930’s, 8 ball overs were typical with modern 6 ball overs not being introduced until the 1970’s. The inscription O. Stuart is carved on the back and the maker's name ‘Lyrebird’ on

Grants of $6,000 each from Four Winds Foundation and Lions Foundation, for kitchen equipment were received with gratitude and were a significant help in achieving the project, but there was still a shortfall in funding. This Hall is one of only a few in the area that is owned by the community and does not get funding from the Council. It is a tremendous asset for Kirwee and ideal as a venue for a large range of events. Due to the lockdown and subsequent unavailability of the kitchen, the Hall lost considerable income

It has been interesting reading the ‘numbers’ relating to sales data for the last twelve months. We source our information from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand, because most real estate agencies supply their sales data to this organisation in real time. Other data sources you will hear about such as QV (Quotable Value), tend to wait until the sale has settled and the information is publicly available. Numbers for Selwyn, as a whole, show that the median sale price increased 1.7% between December 2020 and January 2021. The annual increase was a whopping 14.6%. We have traditionally seen lower increases in value when compared to the rest of the country, because post-quake there was a tremendous increase in building, hence a

great supply. Not now! Our Newbrook and Hidden Acres subdivisions have seen a phenomenal demand, with many sections being snapped up by both local homeowners and spec builders. The list from people wanting to get into the Kirwee Plains' next release, grows daily. Demand will outstrip supply in the next few weeks, again putting pressure on house prices for existing properties. Investors make up about 20% of the mortgage borrowing and this is set to be tightened. The Reserve Bank has indicated they will re-introduce the Loan to Value Ratio’s (LVR's) in March. There is an indication investors will be required to have a 30% deposit. Will this drive them from the market? In reality for some it may, but most of the big banks have self-

imposed these restrictions for some months already. The interesting fact I recall is, that there is only about 40% of homes in New Zealand that have a mortgage anyway, meaning 60% of homeowners have huge amounts of equity in their homes, but many choose not to invest into second or third homes. So, with high equity, selfimposed LVR's, demand outstripping supply we do not see an easing in house prices in the near future. There is still world uncertainty, but it is very unlikely we will see any drop in prices. Enjoy the remaining months of sunshine and keep you and yours safe.

The findings come from the second Selwyn Business Survey, a quarterly survey organised by the Council, which shows businesses are overwhelmingly more positive about the outlook over the next six months. The February survey of 120 businesses from over 17 different industries shows confidence growing after a year affected by the Covid-19 global pandemic. The results showed 28% of businesses were expecting their profits to increase over the next six months and 9% are expecting to hire new staff. This compared to 10% of businesses that reported reduced profits over the previous six months, while 6% of businesses reduced staff in

that time. Council Group Manager Community Services and Facilities, Denise Kidd, said it was good to see the positive outlook despite the challenges of the pandemic. “It’s particularly pleasing to see businesses reporting that they’re planning to hire over the next six months. Especially as autumn and winter are typically quieter periods for hiring.” The pandemic led to challenges accessing supplies and finding skilled and semi-skilled staff. Businesses are also expecting costs to rise in the next six months. However, there were also positives for business, with 35% reporting a closer relationship with customers, while

businesses also reported an increase in use of online services, more flexible work arrangements, increased use of local suppliers and more efficient use of staff and resources. “We know there are still challenges to come, but it’s good to see businesses and our community working together and adapting well and that we’re well placed for the longterm,” Denise concluded. The results were presented to around 60 business leaders at the second Council business breakfast on Tuesday, February 23rd, organised to support businesses through practical speakers and encouraging networking. The guests also heard from the Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce with practical tips on wellbeing and staff retention and support. The next event will be held in May.

Cam Albon from ‘Southern Alps Pinstriping and Signs’, has been doing traditional hand-painted pinstriping and sign painting as a side-line business since 2016. He started teaching himself in 2014, after learning how to airbrush with the world leaders of the art ‘Airbrush Venturi’ (AV), while living in Australia in 2012. “I then became a tutor for ‘AV,’ in New Zealand for four years, but my true passion was pinstriping and sign painting. I chased learning the art after having a sneak peek from a new pinstriping course ‘AV’ was creating, I ran with it and have since taught myself a lot more,” Cam said. “I have recently decided to take the plunge, to go out on my own and do it full-time, after a back injury last year halted my construction career. “Painting being very favourable to my body now, it’s the perfect option for me - I get to chase my dream of doing it full-time and have made my it a reality by creating, ‘Southern Alps Pinstriping and Signs’. “I've always had a keen interest in old tools and techniques, growing up with wood working tools in my hands from about the time I could walk and talk, as my father was a cabinet

maker/joiner, then later moving into building around the Malvern District. I’ve also had a passion for just about anything automotive related, especially vintage cars, machinery, trucks and hot rods, this is where my love for the artwork on these vehicles and equipment really grew, which captured my creative side, leading into traditional sign painting. “Growing up in Sheffield and Waddington with constant exposure to thing’s that feed my passion, has help me get to where I am today. “What I enjoy most about my chosen traditional crafts, is the soul in each brush stroke. Recreating this in modern days keeps me grounded to my roots in the traditional world, where things worked at a different pace and attention was given to detail and quality of workmanship, which has been ingrained in me from my upbringing. Cam’s work involves using specialty enamel paints, turpentine, rags, specialty brushes, which are brought in from the United States and United Kingdom, in the form of both lettering and pinstriping brushes of various types, maul stick and cleaning products. “As far as technique’s go, it’s

hard to explain without showing people what I do, but a couple of important points are, stabilising yourself and patience. Many readers’ may know Cam’s family name’s Albon and Nimmo, as the family have lived and worked in this area for longer than his parents have been alive. Cam has lived in a few different towns in the district, but for the past four or so years he has resided in Springfield “I also collect other relics/ advertisements industrial or residential, from time gone by, as a reminder of how things were. This is where I get my inspiration to create what I do on a daily basis,” Cam concluded.

Do more to monitor your safety! Hello fellow road users. The Climate Change Commission recently announced a string of proposals, to meet our target of making New Zealand carbon neutral by 2050. Now, I’m not pretending to know very many details about the government’s policies and how they plan to restrict the automotive industry to meet the carbon emissions targets, but I do know, my industry adapts and changes very quickly. I don’t consider myself to be that old, but I’ve b e en in vo lv ed in th e automotive industry for nearly thirty years. When I started in the industry, nearly all cars on the road were carbureted and apart from an oil and grease service, customers could book their car in for a tune up and as a mechanic, we could set up and adjust the way a car runs. Who remembers using a choke to start their car? Fuel injection

and computer-controlled engines were new and of the future, even air conditioning and power steering was not that common. Today in the workshop, almost every vehicle has multiple computers, controlling nearly every aspect of the vehicles operation. Many of these systems are strongly focused on fuel economy and eliminating harmful emissions. We are also now seeing, vehicles with adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning systems, that use radar and on-board cameras to control the speed and direction of your vehicle. How far away are self-driven cars from arriving on our roads? In the Commission’s report, they recommend that New Zealand ban importing petrol and diesel vehicles by 2035. Some in the industry believe this can’t happen, but with the Go v e r n m e n t' s g o a l o f becoming carbon neutral by We now have our own

The Malvern Primary Schools Triathlon was held in Hororata, on Thursday, March 25th. This was a cracker event, with fifty four Year 4, 5 and 6 athletes from around the district, competing against their friends to gain some experience before the Canterbury Triathlon, which will be held on March 23rd. The cheering and supporting from fellow competitors, parents and whanau, was very encouraging as the racers crossed the finish line. “A big thank you to the teachers, parents, students and whanau for the support, marshalling and organisation, allowing our pupils this opportunity,” commented Jayde Mayberry, Mayberry from Selwyn Sports Trust. “There were no records broken, there were some pretty impressive times on what was a challenging course, especially for our Year 4,” Hororata Principal, Marty Gameson commented. “A big shout out goes to Jayde and Olivia Ritchie from Mana Ake, for all their hard work, making this event successful,” Marty concluded. Broken River Ski Club’s 70th year celebration, got off to a great start with their Open Day on Saturday, February 27th. It was a blue bird day, with more than 200 visitors coming from Darfield, Christchurch, North Canterbury and as far afield as Greymouth. “The Open Day was a huge success,” said Springfield local Claire Newell, Newell Broken River’s Marketing Coordinator and daughter of the founding Club President, Jack Newell. Newell The day started with a scenic four minute ride through the beech forest, up from the car park, to the accommodation on the Club’s funicular rail, The Tyndall Tramway. “People were blown away by the views from the Tram,” said Broken River’s President, Ross Campbell. Campbell “Many visitors were surprised to find a railway in the middle of the mountains,” he added. After refreshments at the accommodation lodges, visitors walked up to the day lodge in the ski basin and were welcomed by lunch smells, wafting from the barbecue. Everyone relaxed in the sun on the deck at Palmer Day Lodge,

Not far away on the Learner’s Tow, people had the chance to learn to use a ‘nutcracker’ rope tow. “It was great to see so many

people giving the rope tow a go,” concluded Ross. The Tow lessons were also a popular part of the kid’s scavenger hunt, which took the kids to several locations around the day lodge. “It was such a great day. Amazing to see so many people making the effort to visit, it was such a privilege to show everyone our special place,” concluded Claire.

Last week, first time, outdoor target shooter Ryan Booth (age 15) from Greendale, provided an exceptional performance at the 2021 Outdoor National Championships, run by Target Shooting New Zealand (TSNZ). Ryan was competing for the first time in the 50 yard smallbore target shooting, at McLeans Island. The competition held over six days (22nd - 27th February), was intense and had varying weather conditions. Each match consisted of 60 counting shots, within an hour time limit. Ryan impressed the fellow competitors early in the week, by taking out first place in the D-Grade ‘Prone Badge Match’

and first place in the ‘Graded Match’ (D). Ryan’s performance earned him a place in multiple teams, including representing the South Island and New Zealand in the team events. All of the team events are opengraded, for a D-Grader to make a team is a testament to their performance. Ryan shot for the South Island team against the North Island and also represented New Zealand in the Junior (U21) Team against Australia, Junior Men’s Drew Team and Junior Drew Team against the United Kingdom. Results from the international matches won’t be available until they have their championship matches,

The Board meeting was held on Monday, February 22nd, in the Darfield Library and Service Centre meeting rooms. Before the meeting, the Board held a workshop with the Chief Executive and the Group Manager Community Services and Facilities, to discuss the Council’s proposals regarding the reorganisation of community committees. • In Public Forum, a member of the community told the Board of his concerns with the ivy and blackberry growing in McHugh’s Forest and asked that Council assess the problem. The Board has asked for information on any action to be reported back to them. • The Board discussed issues from the community meetings they attended, including the impact of the closure of the Bathurst Mine at Coalgate, on the Malvern community. Also noted, was the upgrade of the Springfield Railway Station by Kiwi Rail and the plans by Mainline Steam, to move its restoration operations to Springfield. • The plan for the Westview Special Fund Committee to advertise in March, for projects that would benefit the Darfield Community and be funded either entirely or partly from that fund, was reported to the Board by two of its members, John Morten and Judith Pascoe, Pascoe who are also members of that committee. • Also reported, was the appreciation of the Kirwee community for the extension of the footpath on Hoskyns Road, from the Kirwee Cemetery to Anzac Lane, as requested by the Kirwee Township Committee. The Township Committee has also expressed concern over the number of cars not stopping at the compulsory stop sign, on the north side of Courtenay Road when turning towards Christchurch. The Board has asked if a ‘stop’ warning sign could be painted onto the road before the corner. • Council’s Group Manager Community Services and Facilities, Denise Kidd, attended the meeting and presented information to the Board about the teams reporting to her and their roles. • The Board acknowledged the recent passing of Mr. Roger Parsons and recognised his contribution to his community, in particular the Reserve Committee he served on. The shop owner points to three identical looking parrots on a perch and says, “The parrot on the left costs $500 dollars.” “Why does the parrot cost so much?” asks the man. The owner says “Well the parrot knows how to use a computer.” The man then asks about the next parrot and learns that it costs $1,000 dollars! This is because it can do everything the ﬁrst parrot can do, plus it knows how to use the Microsoft operating system. Naturally, the increasingly startled man asks about the third parrot, only to be told that it costs $2,000 dollars. Needless to say this begs the question, “What can it do?” To which the owner replies, “To be honest I have never seen it do anything…. But the other two call him boss!”
