The 39th annual Kathmandu Coast to Coast was held on February 12th and 13th, with many locals competing in their chosen challenging sections, displaying some outstanding results. The Coast to Coast has become a goal for many multisport competitors and attracts people from a range of sporting backgrounds, who want to tackle the 243km challenge or the 33km Mountain Run. Numerous local people turned up to spectate and support competitors at the Waimakariri Gorge, Klondyke Corner, finish line and other points along the way. The support and cheering was just what the competitors needed to keep their focus and drive going to cross the finish line. Each competitor has a different goal, whether it is to win, to beat a previous placing or to just be able to say they have completed it. Devon Crequer, Crequer from Darfield, made the news after day 1 by winning the Open Section of the
Mountain Run, in a time of 3 hours, 37 minutes. “Training started for me about three months out from the race (already having a good base fitness), with long weekend runs up Mt Oxford and around the Port Hills,” commented Devon. “I managed to get over Goat Pass about four times, prior to the event, which really helped knowing the faster lines. Race day, things started off fast with four of us breaking away during the first river crossing. For the next 4kms I ran in behind the other three, before I made a break to try and get a lead, knowing that the first half of the run was my strength. I managed to make some good distance at the half way mark, but a little bit of cramp in my calf muscles meant for a challenging run down and out off the Mingha Valley. I still managed to keep a good steady pace out to the finish at Klondyke Corner,” concluded Devon.
