Darfield Domain, early on Saturday was alive, first with over forty volunteers setting up, followed by crowds of locals for the ‘Fun Day’. The fun started at 10am, with loads of free activities for children taking place. The tug of war was epic and the lolly scramble delightful. Archery, weird bicycles, bouncy castles, face painting and old favourites like the egg race, kept the children engaged. The atmosphere was happy and peaceful, helped by a gentle north-easterly breeze and great choices of kiwi music by compere, Chris Martin. Martin Everyone stopped at noon for the National anthem, followed by a convincing mihi whakatau (formal speech of welcome) by Nikau Davies. Davies Lynmaree Sopoaga then honoured the bi-cultural reason for Waitangi Day, led us in our anthem again and spoke a blessing for the day and the people. There were interesting stalls, including an actual cabin in construction by the Malvern Housing Trust, The Darfield Library and polished stone and mineral display by Roger Dennis. Trust, Community Patrol and St John were all manned by members, keen to share about their work. Throughout the day, a young local band called ‘Out of Control’ played sets of convincing covers of just the right music for the event. Andrew (guitar), Sam (bass), and Jack (drums), were well rehearsed and entertaining. The Two Rivers Community Trust, who organised the event wish to thank sponsors, Selwyn District Council, Rata Foundation, Lotteries Grants, COGS and Fonterra for their generous support. Many volunteers and supporters of the different branches of the Trust, also deserve a big thank you.

Have you ever checked out the Darfield Fire Museum? As well as it being home to our vintage 1957 Bedford hose reel tender, that will be very familiar to locals giving rides at shows, there are many other bits of fire paraphernalia from both the history of Darfield brigade and brigades na%onally. The museum will be open on Sunday 14th February between 10am & 2pm, so feel free to come down and check out the hidden treasures inside! During the a.ernoon one of our fire fighters Sarah Arnold, who is currently ba/ling a brain tumor, will be shaving her head as a fundraiser for White Ma/er Brain Cancer Trust. The first Selwyn Wine and Beer Festival will be held at Larcomb Vineyard on Saturday, February 20th. The Festival, produced by a team of local business owners and entrepreneurs who have extensive experience in events, have pooled their knowledge and talents to create an event to give the community a great afternoon out. “Between us, we have everything you need to make a great festival - a location (Larcomb Vineyard), marquees and hire equipment (Happy
Hire), marketing and design (Quill and Arrow Collective) and the rapport with wineries and breweries (Wine Divine), plus willing and eager Wineries and Craft Breweries’, said Olivia, Olivia Director of Quill and Arrow Collective. “We’re thankful to the Selwyn District Council for their support with a funding grant, and Hundy with a partnership. Our hope is that it’s a success, so we can make this an annual festival for Selwyn.” On the day, everyone has the opportunity to sample craft

beers such as, Toasted Marshmallow Milk Stout, awardwinning Ginger Pippin Cider and a range of wines, that may just make a white wine only drinker, fall in love with a red or rosé. When the annual Kathmandu Coast to Coast takes place this weekend, there will not only be a large number of locals competing - but also a large number involved in various fundraising ventures and turning out to spectate. The race starts on the West Coast’s, Kumara Beach. It traverses the width of the South Island, crossing the main divide and finishing on the East Coast, at the Pier on New Brighton Beach and is touted as one of the world’s longest running multisport events. Competitors in the Longest Day One Day World Multisport Championship event, set off on February 13th striving to complete their extreme challenge within the allotted time.
The Two Day individual, or team, event covers the same course as the one day-ers. However, these competitors set off on Friday February 12th, camp overnight at Klondyke Corner, following the Mountain Run and before completing the kayak and final cycle stage on Saturday. There is also a Two Day Tandem Team event, in which teams of two complete the entire course, over the two days, together. They must always be within fifty metres of each other on the bike and run legs, and complete the river leg in a double kayak. Additionally the Mountain Run is an option for those just wanting to tackle the run section of the event. The Schools’ section is open to
students enrolled at High School on race day and is a three person team’s event. The Coast to Coast also offers the Corporate Challenge Two Day Event. This sees corporate colleagues work together as a three person team, completing one section of the race each. While the Waimakariri Gorge is generally the most popular vantage point for spectators on Saturday - it’s hoped folk will turn out wherever they can, to cheer on competitors. Best of luck to all those taking on the challenge and the News would love to see some photos and hear some local results following the event.

If it’s not too late to say so, may I begin this column by wishing everybody a happy New Year! 2021 seems off to a relatively good start with lovely weather, promising dairy pay-outs, good lamb prices, harvests looking good, better-than-expected unemployment data and, perhaps most importantly, no new Covid cases in this area! I’ve begun the year running constituent clinics across the district, from Darfield to Leeston, Lincoln and Rolleston, and everywhere in between. While waiting for the fit out of my Rolleston office to be completed, it’s been a fantastic opportunity to work remotely, allowing me to actually get out and about, and into all the different communities. I’m constantly in awe of what a resilient, positive, forwardthinking bunch the folk across the Selwyn district are. Despite the havoc caused by a global pandemic, employment actually grew in Selwyn by 3.1% (compared to a national average of 1.6%), the population grew, along with the number of businesses, building consent applications went through the roof and the cost of housing is at least $150,000 below the national average. Despite all the good news though, I am starting to see a concerning level of demand on social and community services that hasn’t been seen here

before. While jobs data out of Selwyn is better than average, people who work in the city have been impacted by job losses. In-bound tourism operators are up against the wall, and manufacturers and exporters are really struggling due to disrupted international supply chains. As a result, not only is my office fielding a number of requests for support from MSD and WINZ, but the likes of the Salvation Army reported a huge demand for help prior to Christmas. Schools have reported that, while still few in numbers, they are seeing a rise in family harm incidents. I am particularly worried about the psycho-social impact of the lockdown on women and children, and am working with agencies to understand where support is needed. Looking to our rural communities, many are deeply concerned about the cumulative impact of water and nitrate policies, as well as the unknowns of the Climate Change Commission’s recommendations for emissions reductions. While everyone agrees environmental improvements and preservation
is imperative, the lack of regional-specific plans are deeply worrying for many farmers and growers. As I begin the Parliamentary year, my aim is to meet as many people across Selwyn as I can, and visit as many different stakeholder and community groups from across every sector of our society as I can. On Monday, February 8th a model boat display took place on the Pond at the Darfield Domain. Twelve boats were on display both in and out of the water. Organiser of this display, Ian Sandford, was delighted with the turnout and is hopeful that a model boat club will be started as a results of his library display that took place late last year, as well as this event.

Sheep Milk NZ held its first open day on Thursday, February 4th, at Tuscany Downs in Kirwee, with an audience of over 250 people, ranging from Central Otago to North Canterbury. The open day brought together industry experts and those interested in learning more about the sheep milking industry. Sheep Milk NZ is the inspiration of Matt and Tracey Jones, Jones who began commercially milking sheep in 2019, they wanted to connect industry people with others interested in sheep milking. “We wanted to get the community together to discuss the opportunities of the industry and provide a forum where people could ask questions,” Matt said. Questions from the audience related to breeds, getting the best from milking sheep and understanding the benefits of sheep milk in an international marketplace. People from as far south as Ranfurly, were interested to know if there were options for their milk to be delivered to Sheep Milk NZ’s processing plant, in Canterbury and were surprised to find out that plans were in place to start transporting milk from Otago already. A big question from those wanting to increase flock sizes was, ‘what do we do with our milk?’ Matt’s answer was unequivocal, “We are continually working on investment and infrastructure, but Sheep Milk NZ needs milk to grow production.” Speakers included; The Agri Business Group who spoke about the financial costs, management and planning, as well as an environmental impact report they are

What interested many in the audience was Sheep Milk NZ’s, Operations and Genetics Manager, Craig Harrison’s talk on the genetics of a high milk producing hardy sheep, fit for New Zealand conditions. Strathclyde Stud are working on such a breed that will be best suited to South Island conditions. The Groups Marketing Manager, Virna Smith introduced ‘Sabelle’, Sheep Milk NZ’s skin and body care range, which is
produced using sheep milk and Manuka honey, and the gouda and havarti cheeses produced from the Jones’ Family Farm. They are also working on an aged cheddar and a creamy blue to add to their cheese range. Those who attended enjoyed samples of sheep milk, cheese and skincare products.

A century from Ohoka, batsmen Rhys Mariu, Mariu was the difference between the teams in a hardfought encounter at Mandeville. Mariu carried his bat and collected 114 runs from 118 balls, as his side made 253 for 6 from their 45 overs. Tim Hauschild, Hauschild Liam Foulkes and Will Greenslade captured one wicket each and Jesse Frew three, but they were never really given a chance, as Ohoka were ruthless on anything off target and demonstrated how best to accumulate singles in the middle overs, with deft placement and delicate footwork. Darfield's fielding was to its usual high standard and the team should be congratulated for scrapping hard in the final 10 overs. Ohoka could have posted a score in excess of 280, had Darfield not shown stubborn determination as they threw themselves around the field. Particular mention goes to Nick Jenkins, Jenkins now into his 3rd decade, is fitter and faster than many in the team 10 years his junior.
With the required run rate at 5.62, an early wicket didn't help, but Jesse Frew (31) and Nick Gilbert (39), who seems to be returning to form, then took the score to 92, before Gilbert fell to a perfectly placed yorker and Frew followed him 10 runs later, to a one-handed catch. This is where the little wobble set in, as Tim Boyle and Ben Innes struggled to maintain the scoring and were soon back in the shed for single figures, with the team total 117/5. Ryan Hughes (38) and Alister Collins (48), attempted a correction and made good progress, at a run per ball, to keep their team in the hunt. Even when Hughes fell with 50 required and Collins with 40 still to get, there was hope as Will Greenslade (13*) and Tom Innes (13*) pushed Darfield closer, but with 21 required from the last over, it was just too much for the tail enders to achieve and Darfield fell 15 runs short, with 1 wicket in hand and a final score of 238/9.

When they get there, St. Peter says, “We only have one rule here in heaven: Don’t step on the ducks!” So they enter heaven, and sure enough, there are ducks all over the place. It is almost impossible not to step on a duck, and although they try their best to avoid them, the first woman accidentally steps on one. Along comes St. Peter with the ugliest man she ever saw. St. Peter chains them together and says, “Your punishment for stepping on a duck is to spend eternity chained to this ugly man!” The next day, the second woman accidentally steps on a duck and along comes St. Peter, who doesn’t miss a thing. With him is another extremely ugly man. He chains them together with the same admonishment as for the first woman. The third woman has observed all this and, not wanting to be chained for all eternity to an ugly man, is very, VERY careful where she steps. She manages to go months without stepping on any ducks, then one day St. Peter comes up to her with the most handsome man she has ever laid eyes on… very tall, dark hair, and muscular. St. Peter chains them together without saying a word and walks away. The happy woman says, “I wonder what I did to deserve being chained to you for all of eternity?” The guy says, “I don’t know about you, but I stepped on a duck!”
