Year 10 Darfield High School student, Jody McCarthy Dempsey, Dempsey attended the South Island Colgate Games, that were held at the Saxton Field Sports Complex in Stoke, Nelson, on January 15th-17th. This was Jody’s seventh Games and she came away with some fantastic results. The Colgate Games are an annual event for athletes aged between 7-14 years, split into one North Island and one South Island Games. Both events are an opportunity for hundreds of young athletes

from around the country to come together for three days of athletics, making new friends, meeting other children and enjoying competing against one another.

Jody has been a member of the Selwyn Athletics Club since she was six years old and is an allaround athlete, competing in both track and field. Sometimes competing in multiple events can be hard, as competitors can only enter a certain number of classes per competition.

The Malvern School of Music Inc (MSM) is preparing for current and new students to commence lessons in February. This will be the 34th year of lessons, offered in a variety of musical instruments, theory and voice, which is an amazing track record for such an organisation.

Based in Darfield and taking the name from the ‘Malvern Hills’, MSM has given young and adult students alike an opportunity to learn keyboard, piano, clarinet, saxophone, drums, recorder, singing, guitar, ukulele, violin,

cello and flute over the years, along with installing a love and appreciation for music, inspired by our talented and experienced tutors.

Last year’s ‘Lockdown’ proved how valuable music is in our lives, not only an ideal time to maintain a good level of playing or singing, but also incredibly good for our wellbeing. Some tutors were able to offer online lessons and many of our students continued their good progress, regardless as to what was happening around them.

Te Huanui is delighted to launch into 2021 featuring a local line up, with ‘Into the Wild’.

Inspiration is taken from native wildlife or simply the wild around them, showcasing paintings by Deb Bamber, Bamber Sophie Boswell and Rachael Inch, Inch charcoal and Indian ink drawings by Vicky Peacock and pottery from Bruce Monro.

Monro ‘Into the Wild’ is open from Friday, January 29th until Thursday, February 25th.

Deb Bamber grew up in Southern England, influenced by her rural upbringing, wildlife and coastal scenes are predominant.

Having experimented with various mediums and styles, Deb favours oil on canvas but has experimented with pen, ink and watercolour for this showcase.

Her unique collection of native birds, continuing with her ethos of capturing light and movement, which she hopes viewers will enjoy.

Sophie Boswell has been drawing and painting from a young age, experimenting with a range of mediums and subject matter. During her Level 2

portfolio work, Sophie found her love for birds, realism and a return to classic acrylics. Sophie strives for excellence in her work, rewarded with excellence for her NCEA, two portfolio exhibitions at Arts in Oxford and a finalist in the ZONTA Youth Award in both 2019 and 2020.

Rachael Inch has a long connection to creativity in the Selwyn area. She has been creating and selling her works in distinct styles of Canterbury skies, landscapes and the fluid movements of agate paintings which she has created for this exhibition. An avid lover of agates, Rachael finds them nestled in the land on her family’s farm and is proud to be kaitiaki of the land. Rachael’s other connection to creativity is through her extensive history in promoting, supporting and collaborating with community ar ts o rg a ni s at io n s a n d individuals, through the Selwyn Creative Network.

Bruce Monro began potting at Christ’s College under Marie Tothill, Tothill a Canterbury pioneer in domestic earthenware. After

travelling in Australia, Bruce set up a pottery on Magnetic Island before returning to Nelson, marrying Sandra where they made a great team potting and decorating together. Bruce fell in love with wood firing after purchasing Wakefield Pottery, and began decorating his pottery with ferns from the native bush surrounds.

Vicky Peacock has been drawing for as long as she can remember. Her interest in subject matter and mediums evolving very quickly, is a particularly useful trait in her teaching. Vicky’s current fascination is native New Zealand birds and charcoal, inspired by New Zealand’s native birds as national monuments and raising awareness of their plight. Vicky also showcases her mandalas in Indian ink, inspired

by New Zealand flora and personal growth.

During long, hot days, pet owners are urged to be extra mindful of their pet’s health and safety. Unusually warm weather can quickly take its toll on furry family members, who aren’t well equipped for dealing with blazing heat.

Unlike humans, cats and dogs can’t handle hot weather particularly well. After all, they’re covered in a coat of insulating fur, and neither species sweat like we do.

Dogs, who are more likely to be running around outside, control their temperature by panting and sweating through their paws.

Cats, on the other hand, know a thing or two about evaporative cooling. They lick their coats in summer to help control temperatures - the saliva drying off takes heat with it, in the same way that human sweating works.

With that said, here’s the top tips for cool pets on a hot day: • Pets can dehydrate fast. Make sure there’s plenty of fresh, clean water and be sure

there’s a cool, shady place available where they can rest, out of the harsh rays of the sun.

Don’t overexercise. Just as you’d seek shelter in the pool or under a brolly in the heat of the day, don’t take your pet for a prowl if it’s properly sweltering. Early mornings and evenings are best.

Avoid hot pavements. Paws can burn, leaving your pal in an unpleasant place and you with a potential vet bill. If you can’t walk on it barefoot, neither can they.

No parked cars. This is a more obvious one, but it must be said: don’t leave your pet in a parked car. Not only do parked cars act as an oven, heating up so rapidly that even a matter of minutes can put your pet into difficulty or worse, it’s an offence. Those who stray can expect a welldeserved reminder from authorities, to the tune of $300.

Trim don’t shave. For those with long-haired cat or dog breeds, trim their mane into something a little cooler. But avoid the temptation to go too short: fur coats might be a little overdressed for the summer, but they protect your pet from sunburn.

Avoid the burn. On that note, bear in mind some breeds (including Staffies, Dalmatians and any pale pup) are prone to sunburn, so t ake precautions for these pets.

Use sunscreen and make sure it’s labelled specifically for use on animals. Other pets need to be actively cooled down - snub -nosed dogs like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boston Terriers,

and cats like Persians, can’t pant efficiently and may need a hand (e.g. a cool shower and/or positioning under the aircon). Long haired cats can benefit from more frequent brushing, helping to keep their fur under control.

Watch for the symptoms of heat stroke. An overheating pet might pant excessively, have difficulty breathing with an increased heart and respiratory rate, drool, display uncharacteristic weakness, appear ‘out of it’ or even collapse. Other more serious symptoms include seizures, bloody diarrhoea and vomit, along with a body temperature above 40 degrees. If any of these symptoms are noticed, cool your pet, offer water and take them straight to the nearest vet.

Be careful around water. We love our beaches, rivers, lakes and streams, but these can be dangerous areas for your pets. Keep a close eye out because, just like with other family members, keeping cool can get them into trouble.

Reduce any risk of your pet getting caught in a rip or washed away.

Local Police were kept busy over the festive season, with several serious motor vehicle crashes and small spates of theft and dishonesty occurring throughout the district.

Over the last couple of weeks, there has been an increase in quad bikes and machinery stolen from farms in the Malvern area. Local Police require help of the community to apprehend these offenders. We have also had offenders stealing petrol from farm sheds and syphoning petrol from farm vehicles.

A few suspects have been seen by locals acting suspiciously, but this information has not been

reported to Police. We require any suspect activity to be reported ASAP, as often we can link it all together to help apprehend offenders.

This type of information also helps us plan our patrol areas, for both police staff and community patrols.

There has also been a noticeable increase in drivers caught speeding across the district in recent weeks. This is a friendly reminder to keep your eye on your speed and to also take note of speed limits when you are coming into built up areas, as in some places the posted speed limit has changed

in recent times.

Reporting crime can be done in several ways: • Call 111 when you need immediate help with a lifethreatening or time - critical emergency!

• By phoning 105 - when no one is injured or in danger, there is no serious risk to people or property, the crime is not still happening.

• By reporting online at 105.police.govt.nz • Or by calling into your nearest local police station.

Matt and Tracey Jones started with farming East Friesians in 2011 and established Strathclyde Stud in 2012, after a career in traditional sheep farming practices.

“To get it right, we visited sheep milk farms in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Switzerland and the Netherlands, to evaluate breeds and farming methods for best practice and milk production, we found East Friesian are internationally considered the best breed for milking.

“Sheep offer flexibility, so it wasn’t difficult to begin a milking herd alongside our wool and meat breeds. They are cleaner to milk, have less effluent, are easier on grazing and require less water,” Matt said.

Sheep milk is proving itself to be a nutritional powerhouse and the go-to alternative for people with

gut health issues and dairy intolerances. Easily digestible, with higher essential amino acids than cow’s milk, sheep milk has been providing a plethora of health benefits.

“It is the best, cleanest A2 milk there is. “It doesn’t require chemical processing like the current lactose-free options, which makes it a great fit not only for local markets, but also for Asian markets,” Matt explained.

“We began commercial milking in 2019 and now we are in the process of breeding an outdoor animal that produces 100 milk solids in lactation. A giant leap from the 57 national average,” he concluded.

Drawing on the Lacaune breed for udder confirmation and increased let-down time, the Maech Tete Rousse and Assaf breeds for hardiness, the Jones’

are working with Ian McDougal, McDougal of Farmgene, an international geneticist specialising in artificial breeding.

“We have an established partnership with Strathclyde, who have available embryos and semen imported from the United Kingdom,” commented Ian. The Open Day will begin at 1pm on February 4th, 2021, at Tuscany Downs, 2817 West Coast Road, Kirwee.

The first stage of the new West Melton Community Park has been officially opened.

Mayor Sam Broughton and Councillor Nicole Reid were at the park on Friday, January 22nd, to officially open the skate area.

“It was great to see so many young people on scooters, bikes and boards out in the sun and using the park. It’s good to have places like this where we can get out and be active and outdoors. I’m looking forward to coming back and enjoying the rest of the park when it’s finished,” Sam said.

The skate area includes a bowl, ramps, ledges and a pump track designed for learners and less experienced or younger riders.

Most of the area was completed

and open to the public before Christmas, with a small section remaining to be finished off in the new year before the park could be officially opened.

The skating area has been opened in time for the West Melton Skate Jam and Picnic in the Park, which will be happening at the park on Thursday, February 4th.

The West Melton Community Park will also include a new playground, sheltered barbecue area and half-court basketball court, which will be built in the new year. Together the Community Park and landscaping developments have been designed to create a space for the whole community to enjoy.

The Rakaia Basin has a rich glacial geological history and has been an important location for understanding the glacial and climatic history of New Zealand in the past. On Sunday, March 7th, the Hororata Community Trust will be joined

by Professor Jamie Shulmeister, Shulmeister from the University of Canterbury and Geologist David Waghorn, Waghorn to run a field trip discovering the Rakaia Basin Glacial History.

David is looking forward to sharing his knowledge of this area. “On this trip, people will see first-hand how this beautiful

landscape has been shaped by geological and glacial forces.

They will learn to identify and distinguish these glacial sediments, and hear how they reflect changes in global climate over the last part of the Quaternary Period. Latest research techniques that have helped unravel the timing of glacial events and how our local glacial history correlates with similar events in other parts of the world will also be discussed,” David explained.

This unique area was first identified by pioneer Geologists, such as Julius Von Haast, Haast

Robert Speight, Speight and P.T. Cox. Cox The sequence of glacial advances and retreats was first established by Jane Soons (1963) and refined by Soons and Gullentops (1973). More recent detailed mapping, combined with new techniques for age dating moraines and lake sediments, has allowed Professor Jamie Shulmeister and post graduate students from the University of Canterbury, to fully understand the local glacial history and the correlation with global glaciation and climatic events.

Guests will join Jamie and David on buses for the field trip. This will be a full day, starting from the Hororata Domain, visiting points of interest from Windwhistle to Lake Coleridge.

Morning tea and lunch will be provided for guests.

The white tail spider is an Australian invader which originates from Sydney. They are partial to warm conditions and are commonly found in furniture, ceiling spaces, bedding and amongst clothing.

The predatory arachnids are loners and hunt in a similar way to a wolf, they are nocturnal and tend to hunt and eat other spiders.

How to avoid bites: • Do not leave clothing on the floor.

• Keep sheets/duvets tucked in and not touching the floor.

• Refrain from squashing.

White tail Treatment: • If a white tail is found, the best way to kill it is to carefully catch it in a jar and pour boiling water over it.

This will kill the spider and any eggs.

• Avoid squashing the spider as there is a possibility of females releasing eggs which will hatch at a later date.

• Pest control is usually carried

out annually; inside and outside of the home. The treatment also takes care of flies, silverfish, carpet beetles and suchlike.

• While it would be nice to use natural pyrethrum, it is affected by oxygen and ultraviolet light which makes it an ineffective long-term option.

The product we use is very effective and lasts for more than six months. Having your building treated annually means that they cannot re-establish in your home.

Local girl, Kiana Buechele, Buechele recently attended the Southern Girls Finishing School, in Kingston (which is 45 minutes south of Queenstown), run by Laura Douglas and a couple of helpers. Kiana’s mum Paula saw the School advertised in 2018 and thought this would be something Kiana would be interested in. These courses are usually held during the school holidays.

The dream of attending became a reality, when Kiana won the Hororata-Malvern Returned Services Association Scholarship at the end of 2019, at Darfield High Schools prizegiving. As part of her application for the Scholarship, she said she would use the money to attend this School, to build her confidence in a farming environment, which she loves.

“When she was awarded the Scholarship, I was thrilled that a dream I had for Kiana was going to turn into a reality,” Paula said proudly.

Paula follows Laura’s company, ‘Real Country’ on Facebook and noticed a post with details of a course running in January. She managed to get Kiana on at short notice, due to someone having to pull out. Kiana was nervous about the six hour course, but was in the same boat as the other fifteen girls that were attending.

The course started with an interesting talk about Laura’s journey and why she started this programme. Laura was a corporate financial analyst for Deloitte, as well as other companies, but she didn’t enjoy the environment very much. One day, she was doodling a picture of what she wanted her life to look like and basically what she doodled is what she is doing now, empowering girls and giving them the ‘can do anything attitude’, even if they have never tried it before.

Laura said, “I’ve been running these workshops for young girls for a couple of years now, they

Kiana said, “I thought the course was extremely intriguing and relatable. The activities we did all related to Laura and her unfortunate experiences with them”.

“Our first set of rotations started off with groundwork with a horse, an experience that Laura was never taught, as she was told to ‘get on and stay on’.

“Next we learnt how to strop on a heavy load, which Laura also had a great misfortune with, concluding of haybales falling off her tractor onto the road.

“Changing a tyre was up next, another event, that in the past left Laura driving slowly down the side of the road back home.

“The next set of rotations were clay bird shooting and rifle targets. Laura was never taught how to properly look through a scope, so had trouble when shooting with her brothers.

“The last thing we were taught was to crack a whip, which ended in a few whip stripes on some people’s legs.

Overall it was a truly fantastic course and if I ever got the chance to do it again I certainly would and I would urge anyone else to do as well,” Kiana concluded.

“We are wanting to advance more women in leadership roles in the Agriculture Industry and we’re playing our part by also starting a twelve-month internship, for three women this year, alongside running these short courses,” Laura

explained.

“I’ve done a lot of research and spoken to a lot of people, and practical skills are where females fall down in the industry with Agriculture.

“It’s not that they’re not capable, it’s just that if they don’t have the practical skills, they lack the confidence to put themselves forward for the roles that they aspire to do,” Laura concluded

The annual Hororata Golf Club Cross Country Tournament took place at the Hororata Golf course in Glentunnel, on January 19th. Cross Country golf entails playing the course, but not as you know it, (for example, 1st tee to 3rd green).

The day started out with clear skies and calm winds but turned into a day that would blow a fully grown sheep from Malvern to Akaroa.

Despite this every player completed the course and walked into the clubhouse with smiles and interesting windblown hairstyles.

Local members Mike Tewaa and

Peter Taylor took the honours by shooting a nett 31, extraordinary numbers given the conditions.

Much work was put in by the organisers who not only arranged the day but provided food and free drink to those in desperate need (which meant everyone).

This event attracted a great turnout and was a fantastic event that was open to everyone. Those that attended are already looking forward to next year's event, where organisers will be radically changing the layout, watch this space!

Darfield demonstrated the depth of their squad, as they defeated Cheviot at Mandeville despite having 11 players unavailable, either due to Canterbury Country representative commitments, injury, or Granny's birthday party.

Batting first on a blustery and hot nor'west day, Darfield lost their first wicket at 23, as captain Liam Foulkes nicked off and was soon followed by brother and opening partner Robson, Robson as the youngest Foulkes attempted a high risk second run only to be left well out of his crease. Tim Boyle (31) and Jordy Frew (27), got the team through to 86 runs and the halfway point of the innings via some watchful batting, but when Frew fell lbw, he was soon followed by Boyle and then Will Greenslade too.

With the score at 96 and 5 batters back in the shed, it looked like an early lunch was possible however, Cullen Moody (46) came to the crease and produced a well-timed innings, that saw him accumulate runs from good balls and punish anything wide. Moody and Michael Hogan (25) took Darfield through to 148, before Hogan made his first error in what had been a faultless innings to that point. As they approached a score, that was more like one they could defend, Moody began to swing his arms and assisted with scampered singles by the tail enders. The hosts eventually made it to 178 on the very last ball of the innings.

secured the first wicket at 32, the fizz returned. Despite another wicket at 36 from Tom Innes and a third at 44 again from Greenslade, the runs continued to accumulate and when Cheviot's Archie Redfern and Jack Harris helped themselves to some wide bowling, it looked like the Hurunui side might take the game at a canter.

But it was Cullen Moody's day and he just couldn't stay out of the game. He removed Redfern for 31, with the score at 99 and then another at 105, leaving 5 men back in the dugout and 73 runs to defend.

Will Greenslade and Liam Foulkes were not going to be outdone by Moody and took it upon themselves to wrap up the game. Greenslade was particularly greedy as he took 5 for the innings, leaving Foulkes to pick up the last 2, as Cheviot crumbled to be all out for 135 with 11 overs unused.

The one day competition takes a break for a week, as the teams start the first 2 rounds of the T20 competition. Darfield play Ohoka, then Weedons in a double header at Mandeville on Saturday, January 30th.

accumulate as many points as they can, to secure a semi-final spot. Currently sitting in third place, leaves little room for error.

Local personal trainer, Jacinda Tibble, Tibble knows how daunting it can be taking the first step towards getting healthy.

She began her path towards personal training over five years ago. Illness and depression had seen Jacinda gain over 60kg, realising something had to change, Jacinda began walking every day with a friend of hers and together they both lost 10kg that year (that same friend still trains with Jacinda every week).

Jacinda noticed the improvement not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. She realised that she could help others who had been in the same situation and that motivated her to start formal study.

She now holds certificates in Fitness Instruction and Personal Training, from the New Zealand Institute of Health and Fitness, as well as an Industry First Aid certificate.

“It’s been a journey of growing

as a person, while helping others to grow and make a better life for themselves. It is about people loving their bodies, no matter what their shape or fitness, it’s about who they are,” Jacinda said.

“I understand the struggles that keep people from starting training, I’ve been through those myself. I am not into yelling at people! I like to make training fun and motivational.

“I train people to help them improve the body they have, to make it stronger, healthier and fitter,” she concluded.

Jacinda has a fully equipped gym at her home, in Sheffield and trains clients from across the Selwyn district. Having her work at home, means she can offer personal training sessions at times that suit busy people, juggling work and children.

She also offers a variety of classes held at Sheffield Rugby Club, from the ever-popular boxing fitness to fun and fast

Most of the competitions that West Melton Bowling Club teams were involved in were completed during December. In Bowls Canterbury competitions, the Woman’s 5’s team played very well to win their Division and earn promotion for this year. The Men’s 2x4’s and Under 5’s teams, played well enough to retain their positions in their respective Divisions.

The Malvern 5’s finals were held on Saturday, December 5th.

West Melton 3, who had won their Senior Division semi-final the previous week, went on to win their final convincingly, so will join West Melton 1 in the Premier Division next season.

The NZ COVID Tracer app helps you protect yourself, your whānau, and your community by enabling faster contact tracing.

The NZ COVID Tracer app has been updated to include Bluetooth tracing technology.

Bluetooth tracing allows you to receive an alert if you have been near another app user who tests positive for COVID-19.

Bluetooth tracing is not intended to replace our existing contact tracing processes or the NZ COVID Tracer QR codes. You still need to scan QR codes to keep track of where you’ve been. Bluetooth tracing is an added tool - it helps keep track of the people we’ve been near.

HOW IT WORKS Once you have turned Bluetooth tracing on, it works by sending out a private and secure random ID code. It’s like your phone is giving digital high-fives to other phones you are near.

The Bluetooth tracing function records how close the other phone was, and for how long.

The phones you come into contact with will need to have Bluetooth tracing turned on as well.

This means that when someone tests positive for COVID-19, they can send an anonymous notification containing all the random IDs their phone has sent out over the past 14 days.

If your phone recognises any of these IDs, and you had been close enough for long enough

to be at risk of exposure, you’ll receive an alert. This alert will advise you on what to do to keep yourself and your whānau safe.

HOW TO TURN IT ON To enable Bluetooth tracing, go to the dashboard of the NZ COVID Tracer app. You should see a menu item saying whether Bluetooth tracing is on or not. If it’s off, tap the icon to turn it on.

Once Bluetooth tracing is enabled in the app, it will work automatically in the background as long as you have your phone’s Bluetooth setting on.

Bluetooth tracing will not use any mobile data, and it will not drain your battery because it uses Bluetooth Low Energy.

YOUR PRIVACY IS PROTECTED PROTECTED When you enable Bluetooth tracing, your privacy is always protected - it cannot share your location, your name or anything else about you. Bluetooth tracing also does not record who you came into contact with, or where you were.

This means if you receive an alert because you came into contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19, no one but you knows you have If you don’t see a menu item received it. An elderly woman walks into a bank in New York City before going on vacation and asks for a $5,000 loan.

The loan officer says, “Miss, we are very appreciative of your business with us, we looked you up and see that you are a multi-millionaire. Why would you want to borrow $5,000?”

The elderly woman replies, “Where else in New York City can I park my car for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return?”
