An exciting new venture has launched in Springfield, as a complimentary business to the Yello Shack Café. ‘Springfield Donuts NZ’ started trading on December 26th, 2020 and have been busy with their current promotion of ‘Bite - Snap Share’. This promotion means take a bite, then a photo with the big Springfield donut and share it on social media. Those that have tried the donuts are loving this promotion, as it is fun and delicious at the same time.

Owner Jase Collins (Donut Dan), had been thinking of starting this business since the giant pink donut was donated to Springfield in 2007. The statue was erected to promote the upcoming Simpsons Movie.

2021 Head Boy and Girl at Darfield High School (DHS) are Matthew Ashworth and Sophie Clarke. Matthew and Sophie both started at Darfield High School in 2015, as Year 7 students.

Matthew attended Kirwee Model School during his primary school years, he plays cricket for Darfield Cricket Club and has been a part of a few school productions.

“I am most looking forward to working alongside the new Principal, Senior Leadership team, and a great team of student leaders. I am also keen to get to know the pupils of DHS,” Matthew commented.

Sophie was born in West Melton and attended West Melton Primary School, she

has played netball both competitively and socially.

“I am very excited to have the chance to interact more with both students and staff around the school, as well as implementing some new ideas with fellow student leaders, whilst setting an example for the students,” Sophie commented.

Both Matthew and Sophie have not had time yet to get together with other student leaders or the Deputy Principal, to discuss and plan on what their main ideas and goals are for the upcoming year. It will be exciting to see what they plan for the year ahead, once school has started.

It was subsequently set alight and destroyed by an arsonist in September 2009. A tyre painted pink was used as a substitute until it was replaced with a new concrete version, unveiled in July 2012.

Jase has been working in the adventure tourism sector, including food and accommodation since 1995, but due to summer adventure tourism being limited because

of Covid restrictions and lack of foreign tourists, he decided to try and get this unique donut business off the ground.

Things came to life quickly with the caravan being purchased, modified and sign written in no time, within a month the donut machine was purchased, tried and tested.

“The donut mixture got a big thumbs up from all ages and walks of life,” Jase commented.

Jase works alongside his partner Alexandra (Donut Daisy) and his children, especially Jack (age 10) who loves working in the caravan and has mastered the sales technique of enticing customers, operating the donut machine and is even a whizz on the till and Eftpos machine. This is truly a fun family operated business.

There has been a huge amount of positive feedback from locals and tourists. This business venture has the bonus of helping to promote Springfield, while giving people something fun to do.

“People have heard about Springfield’s big donut and people from all around the country and are coming specifically to enjoy our fresh donuts.

“We look forward to seeing everyone that pops out to visit us,” Jase concluded.

After having made your submission to the proposed Selwyn District Plan, outlining concerns with changes or lack of changes to zoning, flood risk areas, noise limits, minimum allotment sizes or changes that enable multi-unit developments on site. You might be asking what is the next step?

Perhaps you were not aware of the proposed plan change, which might make changes affecting your land or the enjoyment of your neighbourhood? The public participation process in the Selwyn District is not over yet.

There is an opportunity to make comment on the submissions that were made late last year, a process known as ‘making a further submission’. You cannot make a further submission that raises new points or seeks changes to something that has not already been raised. However, you can make a submission either supporting or opposing a point raised by another person.

For instance, if someone sought that residential zones should allow for smaller section sizes and you are concerned that the district’s townships appear too cramped, you might make a submission opposing this point. Equally you might agree that more intensive development is required, to ensure we are not using up rural zoned land for development, in which case you might make a submission supporting the submission.

Alternatively, someone might have made a submission to rezone a piece of land for residential purposes on the edge of town and you may have a view as to if this is a good or bad idea. By making a submission you have the opportunity to support the proposed rezoning, which is more likely to result in it being rezoned. Otherwise, you might oppose the rezoning, setting out why you do not agree with expansion of the township in this direction.

The rules of the district plan manage subdivisions and zoning of land for residential, commercial and rural purposes, also the way we use our land that might affect others in the community. Land use rules include what level of noise can be generated, where buildings are placed on a property in relation to road boundaries or neighbours’ boundaries, and what activities can occur on land.

Given the wide ambit of activities that are managed through the District Plan, any changes to a district plan are likely to affect most land or business owners at some stage over the next ten years (the timeframe to another district plan review). Therefore, if someone has suggested an idea through the submission process that you strongly agree with, or vehemently disagree with, do not be concerned.

You still have an opportunity to jump into the public participation process.

L - R: Russell Henshaw, Piper Benbow, Ray McCaw and Shania Harrison-Lee. Over the weekend of January 9th-10th, Canterbury Outdoor Target Shooting sent a team to compete against Nelson and Blenheim, in the annual Tri-event. This season was hosted by the Wairau Club based in Blenheim.

Canterbury's team members were Russell Henshaw, Ray McCaw, local shooter Piper Benbow and Shania HarrisonLee. This team brought home the silverware, following a convincing lead of 60 points after the Sunday mornings shoot.

The first stage of the competition was held on Saturday afternoon with a consistent wind speed of around 15kph, this allowed for some good scores to be shot all around. Sunday morning blessed competitors with average wind speeds below 10kph and temperatures of

around 20 degrees by 9am.

“All in all, Blenheim provided a very well run event, with no hiccups and ideal weather conditions. We at Canterbury Outdoor Target Shooting, are looking forward to hosting this event next year, hopefully with similar weather conditions,” commented a spokesperson.

The Canterbury Gliding Club (CGC) team took part in the Gliding New Zealand National event, which was held in Omarama from January 2nd10th. This competition saw a mixed bag of weather, with six days of flying being able to happen. There were twenty pilots from around the country, competing in three classes.

The tasks of between 300km and 500km were set from Mt Arrowsmith in the north, to

Cromwell in the south, Mt Aspiring to the west and Kurow in the east.

Canterbury Gliding Club members had some great results, with locals Nick Oakley winning the Premium Racing class event and Michael Oakley placing second in the Open class by two points. Nick led from day one in his competition and Michael was leading his right up to the end, but came in second by just two points.

Two other CGC members also had fantastic placings. Derek Kraak came third in the Open class and had the Most Meritorious flight and Peter Taylor placed first in the Novice class. Congratulations to all our local competitors for their achievements.

The Tarndale and Partners New Zealand National Championship Jumping and Show Hunter event, is being held at the National Equestrian Centre, McLeans Island, Christchurch from January 21st-24th.

Darfield Gun Club had a fantastic day of shooting on Saturday, January 16th at their Annual Memorial Shoot.

Year 9 Darfield High School student and local cricketer, Blake Taylor was named 13th Man for the Canterbury Kings, Super Smash match on January 15th. The Canterbury Kings played the Northern Knights, winning by six wickets.

The week prior to the game, Melissa was alerted to a Facebook competition that More FM were running, to be the Kings 13th man so herself and her cousin both entered Blake.

He won a family pass to the game, a Kings top and cap as well as hanging out with the Canterbury Team for the day!

“We set ourselves up next to where the Team were, so Blake could jump between the Kings and his mates. He warmed up with them, was with the captains for the toss and had his photo taken, was invited into their team area to hang out when he felt like it, he ran the drinks out a few

Southbrook's Gus Mowat joined Shannan Stewart with the score at 44/3 and the pair attempted to resurrect the innings, but a reluctance to take risks saw the run rate dwindle and Darfield bowlers were as frugal as ever.

When Stewart was dismissed by Frew for 29 from 89 balls the wheels truly fell off the innings.

Frew picked up a couple more to take 3 in total, along with Liam Foulkes' 2 and Zak Foulkes with 3 wickets for the day.

Darfield's fielding was as good as they have produced all season, which included a sharp catch in the slips from Henry Shipley and some seriously athletic ground fielding from Nick Jenkins. Darfield stifled perhaps 30 runs with tenacious chasing, lightening throws and the application of good cricket awareness.

With 131 required for victory, at a run rate of only 2.89, the team looked to put their feet up as Nick Gilbert (18) and Zak Foulkes (13) took them to 52 without loss. Assisted by some wides from Southbrook and a

brace of single digit scores had some rushing for their shoes, as only Jesse Frew (33) seemed comfortable on a pitch that was wearing with haste and producing unpredictable bounce.

Ryan Hughes (12*) and Liam Foulkes (5*) took the cautious option and played the straight ball back to the bowler and waited patiently for some width, as they took 6 overs to collect 20 runs and capture 8 points with the victory.

Darfield had a bye on Saturday 16th January and this week’s game is against Cheviot at Mandeville.

Darfield have also entered a Senior team in the 2nd Grade Competition for the second part of the season. Made up of Darfield High School 1st IX players and some experienced, older players the team played their first game last week against Kaiapoi and came away with a convincing win.

The Selwyn Community Fund is a newly established fund designed to support events

and activities that make Selwyn a great place to live, work and play by contributing to community wellbeing, bringing communities together and attracting visitors to Selwyn.

The Selwyn Community Fund is a key mechanism for the Council to financially support

“You can’t manage what you don’t measure. We have a base line now, so we understand what makes up our carbon emissions. Next, we can identify what areas to focus on and what will make the biggest difference,” he added.

In December, the Council committed to reduce its carbon emissions, to carry out regular assessment of risk and opportunities, and to report back on its actions, in its first

climate change policy.

It is also committed to reduce its emissions as part of the Zero Carbon Act, which sets targets for the country to become carbon neutral by 2050.

Two gas company servicemen, a senior training supervisor and a young trainee, were out checking meters in a suburban neighbourhood. They parked their truck at the end of the alley and worked their way to the other end. At the last house, a woman looking out her kitchen window watched the two men as they checked her gas meter. Finishing the meter check, the senior supervisor challenged his younger co-worker to a foot race down the alley back to the truck to prove that an older guy could outrun a younger one. As they came running up to the truck they realised the lady from the last house was huffing and puffing right behind them. They stopped and asked her what was wrong.

Gasping for breath, she replied, “When I see two gas men running as hard as you two were, I figured I’d better run too!”
