The Dutton Garage Malvern Car Run is normally held over ANZAC Weekend, but was postponed due to Covid. The organisers of the third annual event are thrilled that they are able to be part of the Hororata Highland Games on Saturday, 7th November instead. Many long forgotten brands such as Etoile, Alldays and Onions, Wolseley, Oldsmobile, Swift and Nazzaro, are just some from early motoring history expected to form a display of very rare cars, some of which are sole remaining examples. Leading these cars into the arena will be two Scottish vehicles, a 1912 Albion Truck, and a 1905 Argyll car, both of which are of special significance to the Games, as they are two of the three brands built in Scotland, by companies formed around 1899. New Zealanders ‘can do’ attitude and relative isolation in the early days of motoring,

Bruce and Shirley Shadbolt, in their 1904 L’Etoile will be amongst the many visitors at the Hororata Highland Games. has ensured that a good number of cars were kept in useable condition, when in many countries they were very quickly becoming obsolete and being scrapped and replaced with newer models. Components such as engines and gearboxes were also often recycled, and it was not uncommon for an early engine to be put to use in a saw bench, or to drive a generator, thus

ensuring its survival to be reunited with its original car, during a later restoration. All cars that will be on display at Hororata are a credit to their owners, and show that the art of restoration in New Zealand is alive, well, and comparable to the absolute best in the world. Visitors to the Hororata Highland Games will be most welcome to view the display, and talk to the vehicle’s owners.

The Malvern Community Patrol will be holding a public mee>ng at the Darﬁeld Recrea>on Centre, that businesses and residents are strongly advised to aAend. The mee>ng will discuss the viability of placing CCTV (closed-circuit television) cameras in strategic areas around the Malvern district, to help combat rising crime. Errol Ashby from the Malvern Community Patrol, has approached approximately forty businesses in the Malvern area so far, and he has received one hundred percent posi>ve feedback. “Your aAendance at this mee>ng is vital, I look forward to seeing as many community members there as possible,” Errol added. Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel (Area Manager Preven>on), Senior Sergeant Dean Harker (Area Response Manager Selwyn) and the local police will be in aAendance, along with Ken Eccles from Nelson, who will explain the workings of monitored CCTV cameras, with number plate recogni>on. Senior Sergeant Dean Harker commented, “In the last few weeks, I have been able to aAend mee>ngs with our local community patrols. The Malvern Community Patrol is based in Darﬁeld and looks aFer the Malvern area, and the Lincoln Selwyn Patrol covers Lincoln, Prebbleton, West Melton and other towns within our district.”

“The Selwyn Community Patrols are volunteer organisa>ons, working in coopera>on with the New Zealand Police. The patrols operate during the day, and at night to help make our communi>es safe. The patrols act as the ‘eyes and ears’ for the police, but don’t have any jurisdic>on beyond that,” he explained. “All community patrol members undergo training and are assessed prior to joining their teams. The patrols themselves are regularly provided with areas to cover by the police,” he added. “Members work on a roster system, and just help with the patrols whenever they can, for some people it may be as liAle as one evening or day per month,” he said. “Police heavily rely on community patrols throughout New Zealand, and our local teams do a fantas>c job! Both patrols are currently looking for new members, or dona>ons to help them func>on. If you are keen on joining up or have any other enquires, contact your local police sta>on, and we can pass your details on,” Dean commented. “On our police district staffing front, we have just interviewed and recommended two new police staff to work in the district carrying out Road Policing du>es, these staff will be on the roads throughout the en>re Selwyn area,” he concluded.

"All in all it has been a massive weekend for everyone involved in these two events. But it has all been worth it to see the smiling faces and people enjoying the opportunity to relax and enjoy each other's company. Both events will go a long way to funding the Parish's work in the community, with pastoral care for all, being at the centre of what the Vicar does. Members were treated to a wonderful day out, visiting the Greendale district. The Waianiwa Homestead, was just blooming with beautiful rhododendrons, peonies, dogwoods, azaleas, shrubs, and magnificent trees, some dating back one hundred and fifty years. A delight was the large pond, complete with paradise ducks and ducklings. Next door was another impressive garden at the home of, Ruth and Ian Warren. Warren They expressed the love of their garden, after the many years they have worked on developing it. A real surprise was the sunk in, outdoor seating area, that was previously the swimming pool. Established trees and shrubs along with a peaceful pond, made us all want to linger a little longer. Our final visit was to the WT Adams Arboretum, where Lorraine Adams gave an informative insight into the life of WT Adams and his family. We enjoyed walking around the Arboretum, finding the remains of the old sod cottage, walking through the original nursery, and finding the trees planted by members of the Adams family over the years. The weather was kind and members enjoyed being able to get out and about again. Our next meeting will be held on November 3rd, at the Darfield Recreation Centre, where we will hear Dawn Eagle speak on the topic of roses. New members, are always welcome.

Weeks of nor’westers, followed by a freezing southerly and shocking frosts, did not spoil the look of Terrace Station’s garden for the many visitors in October. The star performer this month was Paeonia Mlokosewitschii - commonly known as ‘Molly the Witch’, which has a single, large, scented, lemon-coloured flower. Sunday, November 1st, will be the final open day this spring. Aquilegias, foxgloves, irises, and poppies will be on show, along with other paeonies, such as Paeonia Veitchii, another very rare treasure. Our visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic to enjoy on the lawns, where there is always a sheltered spot. The specially created walkway highlights massive sequoias and oaks, with other magnificent old trees, such as; acer maples, linden limes, holm

oaks, and cedars all-round the gardens. Historic farming and gardening equipment, along with nineteenth century domestic items, are displayed in the renovated summerhouse. Children will enjoy foraging in the woods to find unusual leaves, and cones, with the assistance of a guide sheet. Many woodland plants will be for sale, along with some giveaways. The $5 adult entry fee goes to the Terrace Station Charitable Trust, children enter free.

Please note that there is no Eftpos. There will be signposts from the Hororata roundabout and please leave dogs at home. Spring is special at Terrace Station, so take advantage of the last opportunity to wander around this peaceful environment, and listen to the birds.

Mayor Sam Broughton, Broughton joined more than forty children from Springfield School, and Te Ara Kākāriki to plant 500 native seedlings, in the Springfield Reserve last week. Local volunteers also helped the pupils prepare the ground. The children got stuck in planting a range of seedlings, and then had the opportunity to learn Harakeke weaving, with Aunty Daphne, Daphne from Ngāti Moki Marae. This is the second time Sam has joined forces with Te Ara

Kākāriki and one of the sixteen enviroschools, in Selwyn District. Last month he joined Glentunnel School children, as they planted the 100,000th native seedling, in support of Te Ara Kākāriki’s aim of restoring biodiversity to Canterbury, through the creation of a native Greenway corridor, linking the mountains to the sea, and Te Waihora. Lou Drage from Te Ara Kākāriki said, “the children have done a great job, we genuinely couldn’t do this without their help. It’s also great to have Sam on

On Wednesday, October 14th, 2020 Windwhistle School had a highly successful Kids Discovery Plant-Out Day, in conjunction with Te Ara Kākāriki and Enviroschools. “A huge thanks to Lou from Te Ara Kākāriki, Matt from Enviroschools, the parent volunteers, staff, and children. We managed to plant a total of 216 natives in our Miro Grove native area,” commented Windwhistle School Principal, Bronwen Seaward. “We also learnt a lot about the flora and fauna here at Windwhistle School, Te Uru Miro. It will be exciting to watch our forest grow over the next few years - we hope the next generation will appreciate our hard work,” Bronwen concluded. JUNIOR WARRIORS It is that time of year again, the time to enter your teams in Harraway’s Junior Warriors Inter School Competition, which will be held at the Hororata Highland Games, on Saturday, November 7th from 9am 12pm.
