This year Darfield High School performed not one, but two productions, ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘The Dreaming’. ‘Beauty and the Beast: A Love Story?’ written by Geoff Bamber, Bamber was one amazing show! It was directed by myself (Jessica Jessica Galletly, Galletly Head of Culture). Accompanied by an amazing crew on lighting, set, backstage and makeup. The cast of twenty two actors were phenomenal, and I am immensely proud of each and everyone of them, as they all shone exceedingly bright on stage. I had so much fun during the show's process

from auditions, to the final night, and I’m sure that if you were to ask anyone involved, they would say the same. A lot of hard work and hours went into the show, and it could not have been pulled off without the awesome cast and crew, that I was lucky to have. The Show transported the audience into a world where Joshua Harcourt (James James Stewart), Stewart is faced with financial ruin, and all that is needed is his youngest daughter Belle Harcourt (Becky Becky Bruce), Bruce to fall for the Prince (Matthew Matthew Ashworth), Ashworth in order to restore

his wealth. Unfortunately, the Prince had upset a Witch (Tierlina Tierlina Payne), Payne and had been turned into a beast. In the end, Belle falls for the Prince despite his looks and breaks the spell that the Witch disposed upon him. This restores all wealth for Joshua Harcourt and his family, and of course… They all live

happily ever after! I would like to thank those that came and supported the production, we loved showing you all our hard work. In words of the Prince, “Farewell, everyone.” Jessica Galletly.

The Malvern Community Arts Council is very pleased with this years response, to the annual nine-day exhibition, held in Darfield’s Recreation Centre. Visitors at the exhibition were asked to cast a ballot for their favourite artwork. The Darfield Artweek’s coveted People’s Choice Award went to Jo Loughnan, Loughnan for her mixed media drawing, ‘A Hui’. Jo reacted to the award by saying, “I’m absolutely thrilled and very honoured. I thought the work at Artweek was absolutely amazing.” She works predominantly in Indian ink, with line work and washes, adding chalk pastels, and a touch of pan pastels, to create areas of colour. “It’s been an incredible week. In addition to this award, I have recently sold works in Dunedin, Christchurch, and Hanmer Springs”, Jo said.

“The voting was decisive”, remarked Malvern Community Arts Council Chairperson, Philip Baldwin. Baldwin “Jo’s line drawing was clearly among the most highly admired pieces in the exhibition. Also drawn from the ballots was a $100 voucher, which was won by Terry Rains, Rains who in fact voted for Jo's work,” he added. “A massive thank you goes to the 160 artists who contributed 351 works to the well renowned

The Woolshed Tour’s first show at Snowdon Station, Windwhistle, was a huge success on Wednesday, October 14th, with a sold out and completely packed woolshed. “It was a great night all-round, and we have been looking forward to bringing the show back to Selwyn,” commented singer/ songwriter Mel Parsons. Parsons Mel along with the comedy duo, The Bitches’ Box, has been entertaining New Zealand audiences in woolsheds since their first tour together in 2012. Windwhistle School will be running another fundraising barbeque at the next Snowdon Station show on November 15th, as well as Springfield School at Brooksdale, this Friday 23rd and Saturday, October 24th. Both schools’ will be providing tasty burgers and slices to hungry crowds, before they attend the ‘laugh a minute’ show. “Windwhistle School has been delighted to be involved with every tour the Bitches Box

brings to our area. It is a fantastic fundraising opportunity for the school, with a great amount of community support,” mentioned Windwhistle School’s spokesperson, Rebecca Rose. Rose “This year the funds raised will be put towards some repairs, and a fresh coat of paint for the school pool, an asset we as a community are very fortunate to have,” she added proudly. "Springfield School PTA (Parent Teacher Association), are proud to be invited back to provide catering at The Wool Shed Tour shows,” commented, Springfield School’s spokesperson, Tara Keogh. Keogh “The funds raised from the barbeque, will go towards classroom resources to enhance our children’s learnings," she added. “A special thank you must go out to the parents of Windwhistle School, who came along to help on the night (Wednesday, October 14th), under extremely cold and wet conditions, with a large crowd.

Two Rivers Community Trust are extremely excited to host 2020's Light Party! This is their fourth event, which is continuity to grow into a popular tradition with many in the community. The Light Party is a roller disco by PhatSk8, aiming to provide a safe alternative to trick or treating this Halloween, on Saturday, October 31st. This free event offers the choice of two sessions. The earlier being better suited for juniors and beginner skaters. While seniors, and more confident skaters will be more suited to

the second session. “Though for the last few years, some have enjoyed skating through both sessions! It is awesome to see the adults joining in the fun too - come and give it a try,” commented Kelly Maude, Maude a spokesperson, for Two Rivers Community Trust. “Skates for all sizes and helmets are provided. People are welcome to bring their own if they have them. Please bring your own water bottles, as we are trying to keep this a waste free event. Fruit platters and lolly cake will be provided for

snacks. Find your brightest most colourful clothes and come join the fun,” Kelly explained. This year, the Trust, will also be holding a craft session at Darfield Library, leading up to the disco. There will be UV (ultra violet) lights, and resources to create some glow in the dark accessories, which can then be worn at the roller disco! Organisers look forward to seeing everyone there.

Spring is an ideal time to get out and explore Selwyn district. There are several stunning walks in Arthur’s Pass, with views to beautiful waterfalls, such as Devils Punchbowl or Avalanche Creek. The chance to see our highly endanged kea, playing in the alps is a treat, as is seeing kārearea (New Zealand Falcon), or Roroa (Great Spotted Kiwi). Many of the routes

The Horse Adventure Park is a twenty acre property, based between West Melton and Rolleston, developed specifically for horses. It was designed to be a safe venue, where people could take their horses to experience a wide range of activities. It’s a fantastic place to introduce young horses to an array of new things. People can take their horses there just to ride, or give them experience inhand, while enjoying all the Park has to offer. Many challenges like ditches, curtains, logs, rock pathways, water obstacles, tunnels as well as an 800 metre riding track, and a large sand arena are available for riders to utilise. The best part is people can do as much or little as they like there is no right or wrong. It is a great confidence booster for both adults and children, as they experience all the different

things, with their equine friends. The Park is also available for private bookings, both by groups and individuals, and has proven to be very popular with Adult riding clubs. The upcoming Open Day would be a great opportunity for riders to see what the Park has to offer. The Horse Adventure Park is also hosting the upcoming, ‘Celebration of Horsemanship,’ event in early November - this is a free demonstration event, showing what can be achieved

with good horsemanship. This event will feature some high level Natural Horsemanship clinicians including, Sandy Stanway, Stanway Jackie Chant and Scott O’Malley as well as a number of others.

Friday 6th November issue The Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari is a fundraising event which began in 2009, created by Jayne and Mike Rattray, Rattray born in support of a friend who worked at Air New Zealand Engineering, diagnosed with bowel cancer. Sadly he passed away, but not after leaving an indelible memory of his courage and strength. This year for the first time, the Cancer Society are running the event themselves, as the previous Safari was meant to have been the last, after raising over one million dollars since 2009. Unfortunately, Covid impacted the dates, originally set for May 16th, so some people can no longer participate, but that has opened up places for others to ride, on November 7th. This year the Safari beginning in Rangiora, riding through Ashley and Waimakariri Gorges, to Sheffield for a visit to the traditional pie stop, then travelling the usual route to Hokitika. Paul Washington from Kirwee, will be participating in his sixth Safari. He always rides in a Santa suit, in memory of his six year old son who passed away from a brain tumour, shortly after Christmas 1992. “My wife has beaten cancer twice, and many other family members and friends have battled many forms of cancer, so this cause is extremely dear to my heart. Cancer has touched almost all of us in some way,” Paul commented. “Every Safari stirs up its own

unique challenges, apart from the wee scooters being pushed well beyond what they are supposed to do, some will seize or break down, especially struggling to get up Porters Pass,” Paul said smiling. “However, the weather has always been different, with many unique issues to encounter, we just never know what to expect. Although being a keen motorcyclist with all the proper gear, I’ve experienced being so incredibly hot riding in bright sunshine with not enough wind to cool down, to being so cold and miserable with rain pouring down my back, waiting a while inside my pants, before running down my legs and filling my boots. It was just awful, but a good reminder why we do this ride, its not meant to be pleasant,” Paul explained. “I sold my trusty scooter, it was only used for the Safari and was far too slow and dangerous to ride anywhere from Kirwee. Now that it’s on again, I have purchased some old worn out, broken down scooters for myself and family to ride. After months of mucking around, frustrated trying to get some going that haven’t run in years, I’ve managed to get them to a state that they ‘might’ get there, if we are lucky,” Paul said laughing. “My son in law is once again riding with me, but this year my brother is also joining us from Wellington. My wife, daughter

He’s hoping it will get him there! and grand children will be our support crew, and I’m sure my three year old grandson will have lots of advice on how Poppa Santa should be riding,” he added proudly. “The event has now morphed from its original intension, of a few of us riding in memory and support of cancer sufferers, into a huge national event. The 250 places, limited by legislation, sold out within about an hour and riders are coming from all over the country to take part. Many of the veteran riders of past events missed out this year and there is a waiting list of those wanting to participate. Where else could you be crazy enough to try and ride a little city scooter across the country, over the Alps?” he concluded.

James Two men find themselves trapped inside a featureless room, with no recollection of who they are, or how they got there, the only clues that they have are the pieces of paper that litter the floor. Introducing the 2020 Hororata Highland Games Chieftain John de Vries. Vries Born and bred in Canterbury, John has had a long and successful career in advertising and graphic design. He was one of the first people to get behind the community, when the idea of the Hororata Highland Games was being developed in 2011. Since then, John has been the creative brain behind all the visual design for the Games, all voluntarily. Richard Lang, Lang Chair of the Hororata Community Trust commented, “John embodies what Clan Hororata is, a group of people coming together for a common cause, for the betterment of our community. John is not from Hororata, but he has embraced our community and us him. His passion, creativity and design talents can be seen on display, in every aspect of the Hororata Highland Games. We are proud to have John as our 2020 Chieftain, for our tenth year.” This event has grown into an iconic festival, which attracts 10,000 people annually. This is quite an achievement, as it is a

community run event with 220 people volunteering to be part of Clan Hororata. This equates to nearly 5,000 volunteer hours throughout the year, to make the Hororata Highland Games come to life. “When I first was asked to be involved with the Games way back in 2011, I thought it sounded like a lot of fun and I was right, it has been. U3A Malvern members enjoyed listening to another passionate speaker, Rev Dr Tom Innes, Innes at this months meeting, who spoke about the importance of following your heart and dreams and continuing to evolve. Tom said, “Don’t die wondering if you had followed your dreams, what would you have achieved?” Tom and his wife Dorothy have followed their dreams, creating a lifestyle for their family on their quarter acre section in Springfield, reducing dependency on big business and helping to build a community that shares. Tom asked the questions, “What can we do to be sustainable? What would happen if everyone did?” He then expressed what he liked to think, ‘That this would be better for the world.’ He challenged members to look from the reality of their lives, to being resistant to a crisis. The example he gave was, “Should the alpine fault rupture, we could be without power for several years. Simple things such as not trusting the Council to supply water. Have you got a water tank?” For Tom and his family there were lightbulb moments, triggers that set them on their journey. Such as when his aunt questioned, “Why are you setting up a water system? You should move to the country and grow vegetables.” He knew that this was the solution they were looking for, a life of peace and

joy. They began to follow their hearts and dreams, and continued to evolve their ideas and plans by reducing dependency, and becoming more sustainable. He expressed his view that conventionally a house is a black hole, with debt and ongoing expenses. Their house produces food, energy and shelters the family. The family built their forty-four square metre cabin with a sleepout, garden and a compost toilet, with the emphasis on production and growing their own food. They have no lawn, and they grow plants suited to the Springfield climate, providing fresh vegetables all year. The house is completely off grid, and has developed as a productive home, that has become beautiful and peaceful. “This patchwork approach to living, combining a productive home with casual work has the advantage that, should one part go wrong you still have other parts to grow and develop. It is vastly different from the

This only added to Southbrook's woes as Jesse Frew smacked 33 from 24 balls. Liam Foulkes was dismissed for a responsible 28 runs with the target only 5 away and the rest was academic. Southbrook’s forgettable day was highlighted by their gifting of 23 wides.

A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word that came out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. John tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to "clean up" the bird's vocabulary. Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even ruder. John, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer to cool off for a few minutes. For a few seconds the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard. Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's outstretched arms and said "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behaviour." John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude. As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his attitude, the bird continued, "May I ask what the turkey did?"
