Lizzie Wilson is a Personal Trainer and Nutritionist running, an exciting new mobile business called LWFitness.

Lizzie moved to New Zealand, from Scotland in 2009, and attended Darfield High School before studying Environmental Science at Lincoln University.

After deciding to change her study direction and follow her passion, Lizzie studied Sports Science and Nutrition at The New Zealand Institute of Sport, completing a Level 6 diploma in Advanced Exercise Prescription.

On returning to Scotland she spent a couple of years training clients before furthering her knowledge in the nutrition sector, focusing on the performance side of things, ie; sports teams and athletes. By the time she finished studying, she was a fully trained Performance Nutritionist.

2020 quickly came around and she felt New Zealand was calling her home. “So here I am, with a brand new business, ready to help people achieve their goals at any fitness level, as well as helping with their nutritional needs,” Lizzie said proudly.

The Agri Arty Party is the perfect opportunity to secure a completely original piece of art to jazz up your garden! Many people will have seen and loved the Agri Garden Art Auction at the Hororata Parish Spring Fair, with fabulous works crafted by members of the community and donated to the Fair for auction on the day.

This year the Hororata Parish have decided to hold an additional ticketed event on the Saturday of Labour Weekend to showcase and auction these amazing creations, in the garden at Homebush. People will be able to buy the art to take home to display in their own gardens.

“Ticket holders will also have the opportunity to explore the Homebush Museum and Stables, stroll through the garden, revel at the agri-artistic endeavours, whilst enjoying delicious eats and a complimentary drink on arrival,” said organiser Fleur Deans.

Deans “There is talk of some impressive creations being knocked up, which will no doubt generate some furious bidding,” Fleur added.

“Tickets must be purchased in

advance. There are a limited number available so don’t let the grass grow under your new garden art. We ask that people do not bring children but instead take them along to the free Parish Spring Fair on the Monday,” Fleur explained.

The Hororata Parish Spring Fair, held every Labour Day, at the Hororata Domain, is a very traditional country fair and a ‘must do’ for many people with its emphasis on family entertainment. Among the many attractions are stalls offering delicious homemade jams and speciality foods, handmade

crafts, a wide range of plants, a large selection of second-hand books plus the always-popular Country Auction. The Spring Fair is about more than just raising money, it is about raising community spirits and providing a fun family day.

“All proceeds from the Agri Arty Party and Spring Fair go to the Hororata Parish to help the Vicar support the wellbeing of our local community which is certainly needed in these challenging times,” Fleur concluded.

Help! What do I do when they call me and say my machine has problems?

Yeah and how do they know it has problems?

Short answer is they don’t know! They are prospec ng for a response from you that will allow them to go to the next step and get you to open up your PC to them on-line (through the internet). This is so they can show you and sell you stuff to fix it. Please, please do not listen to them, ring someone. Family is good to talk it through with, or the neighbour, or the computer man. Whoever you use, just call and talk about it with someone. Relate the problem as they have told you and listen to what they tell you to do about it. DO NOT AGREE TO DO ANYTHING UNTIL YOU DO. The unsolicited phone caller, of course, will want to help you then and there and will not want to let you go away from the phone. But go you must and talk with someone. Some of them are persistent, wan ng to call back another me and some even call you without realising that they had already called you a day or two before. When you hear the same ‘phone paGer’ again you start to realise that it might not be what it seems to be.

Put it simply Spark, Vodafone, MicrosoI, Windows, whoever they say they are, will not call you to fix your machine; it’s simply not how they operate. Do not believe them! If in doubt hang up and don’t worry.

They make good money from convincing you that what they say is correct…. How much do they make?

Malvern residents are invited to view the exceptional standard of artwork on exhibit at Darfield’s Recreation Centre until Sunday, October 18th.

The Hon. Amy Adams, Adams MP for Selwyn, made her last official appearance in the district, declaring Darfield Artweek open on Friday, October 9th. An appreciative crowd of more than two hundred artists and friends of the MCAC, had first viewing of three hundred and fifty artworks by one hundred and sixty artists.

The coveted Malvern Community Arts Council (MCAC) Premier Award went to Nelson-born artist, David Waterman, Waterman for his ‘Organic Form No. 1.’

Dr Areta Wilkinson, Wilkinson Artweek’s Judge for 2020, described it as

“a finely executed drawing created by hand, with pastel and pen that begs the eye to follow the spiral, only to find there are other forms beneath.

It has a shifting quality and is quite mesmerising the longer you spend with it.”

David commented that he was very lucky to win the Premier Award, and that he was in total shock. “Thanks also to the sponsors for the prizes which are much appreciated and will help with the expensive artist’s materials,” he added.

Henry Turner, Turner a perennial exhibitor at Artweek, won the MCAC Friends Award for his gouache painting, ‘Stars around the Moon’. “A still-life cosmic folly within a universe within a frame. Beautifully painted with intriguing components carefully placed,” commented the judge.

Among the local award winners were Joan Pascoe for her painting, ‘Abstract Landscape’, Ben Groters, Groters whose ‘Camp’ is a very fine charcoal drawing, black and white true-tomonochromatic-life above the snow line, Asako Ridgen’s ‘Neko Mata’; a well crafted and complex print and ‘Peeling Back Time’ by photographer Rob Lawrence, Lawrence “a sensitive nostalgic glimpse through beautiful decay.

Malvern Residents…

I LIVE IN YOUR AREA! Spring is well under way and fingers crossed that as the weather warms up, we get a bit more rain and a bit less wind in the next few months.

December is approaching and with that comes the fun (and stress) of the holiday period, so now is a good time to remind ourselves to look out for one another, keep safe on the roads and get to Christmas in one piece, so that we can all spend quality time with the family around the barbeque.

At the station in the last month, we have noticed an increase in crashes relating to driving on gravel roads. We are pretty experienced gravel road commuters in these parts, but we are still not quite at the level of someone like Hayden Paddon…..

Please slow down when using gravel roads and increase following distances to account for the loose shingle, which negatively affects handling and stopping distances. This is

particularly relevant when approaching a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

We all know the frustration of the dreaded stone chip, usually caused by someone from the big smoke, flying past in his fancy car without slowing down, or a sideways glance. Don’t be that guy and show courtesy to other users on the road.

Unfortunately, it has also come to our attention that several residents have also been burgled recently. Previous Police columns in the Malvern News gave prevention advice, relating to securing your property and vehicles.

Make these tips part of your everyday routine, as this will become habit and reduce your chance of being targeted. It will also make the life of a crook just that little bit harder - it’s a win win.

On a final note can anyone tell me why the All Blacks didn’t go for the drop kick?

A great turn out at a recent Property Brokers Auction day, held in their new Darfield office.

On Saturday, October 3rd we ran several auctions in the Malvern/Selwyn area. The success is shown in the following number; seven homes and a lifestyle block were offered for sale by way of auction.

Over one hundred people attended, including thirteen bidders with six properties sold "under the hammer", with a total of 3.45 million dollars. One of the other properties went under offer very shortly afterwards to a conditional buyer.

It was an interesting experience for the team and something new for the office.

In summary there were several great points, as follows: • There was a short sharp intense marketing campaign, that resulted in a confirmed sale after three open homes.

• There was no hanging around for owners once an offer was received, waiting on due diligence to be conducted, only to have the offer fail at the last minute, due to unforeseen circumstances.

• Was it stressful for the owners and buyers? A little, but when the dust settled there were many happy owners/buyers and the stress levels lifted, washed down with a glass of bubbles and all parties able to have a catch up.

• All in all, we feel it was a positive experience for those involved, and while there is still strong demand for property in our patch, this is something we will look to do again.

How did the rest of the sales look for September?

A total of fourteen residential sales occurred, one lifestyle block changed hands, and three sections sold in September.

New properties coming to the market remain light. This is generally true with school holidays, and a pending election. Demand from buyers is still strong and inventory levels down.

Looking towards the rest of the year, there is still plenty of time to sell/buy.

Lots of activities took place at the Heavy Events Training Day, in preparation for the Hororata Highland Games.

With not long to go until the Hororata Highland Games, athletes gathered at the Hororata Domain on Saturday, October 10th, to train for the Heavy Events. Pat Hellier, Hellier eighteen times New Zealand Heavy Events Champion, flew down from Tauranga to put those who attended through their paces.

"It was great to see a lot of new faces at this training day, looking to learn more about the Highland Games Heavy Events,” commented Heavy Event Coordinator Tish Ballagh.

Ballagh “Competing in the Heavy Events takes a mix of strength and athletism, as well as technique.

It is not always the biggest that is the best," said Tish.

"Covid-19 travel restrictions mean that we need to change how the Heavy events are run this year, as international competitors cannot travel to New Zealand. This means the

Oceania Heavyweight Champion -ship will not be run in 2020,” she explained. “Instead we will have two grades for men and two grades for women, which is really exciting to hold two women's grades for the first time,” Trish added.

“While we will miss our overseas competitors this year, there is the depth of competitors in New

Zealand to make this a very competitive competition, in all grades. The Heavy Events will, as always, be the highlight of the Hororata Highland Games," Tish concluded.

The 10th Hororata Highland Games will be held at the Hororata Domain, in early November. Discounted tickets are on sale now.

DROPDROP-IN ON YOUR COMMUNITY COMMUNITY BOARD The Malvern Community Board is hosting monthly drop-in sessions in communities around Malvern. This month the Board visited the Sheffield and Waddington community to listen to comments and discussion on a wide range of topics and issues related to the Sheffield and Waddington townships and the wider Sheffield area. Council staff were present to give the technical answers or to take the questions away for further investigation.

One of the main topics identified was the appointment and duties of a new Sheffield Community Centre caretaker. It was noted that the caretaker will be a Council employee with a standard employment contract, but their duties will be tailored to each facility they look after. Rates charged for use of community facilities and the booking process through Council were also discussed with a greater understanding of the process reached.

It was noted that township community committees no longer have a discretionary fund to provide for small local projects and the merits of community committees becoming incorporated societies and hence able to apply to outside funding organisations for local projects was debated.

It was good to meet the new Principal of the Sheffield Primary School, Nigel Beasson, Beasson and to listen to his concerns over parking on the roadside outside the school and the safety of children crossing the State Highway, with several ideas put forward.

However, Transit NZ control the road speed on the State Highway, but Council may be able to help with electronic speed indicator signs. The Principal also presented a comprehensive list of some great activities that the school pupils would like to have in Sheffield, including a skate park and a flying fox, with a request for a community garden gaining the support of those present.

Springfield representatives raised the issue of feral cats in Springfield (an ECan issue) and the planting of replacement roadside trees. Watch for these plantings next weekend.

Any member of the Malvern community are welcome to attend the next drop-in session in Darfield, to discuss issues and ask questions.

The Malvern Community Patrol has been operating for six years, covering a wide area of Malvern. The twenty eight volunteers work under a roster system, which sees them patrol in pairs, usually starting in the early evening and continuing late into the night.

The aim of Community Patrols are to make local communities a much safer place to reside, and the Malvern Patrol works very closely with the local Police, striving to achieve this goal.

Mem be rs oft en r ec eiv e favourable comments from local people, as to how reassuring it is to see the Patrol vehicle moving through their community.

The Malvern Community Patrol vehicle people may have seen around the community. Patrol members are holding a Duathlon in November to raise important funds to keep this valuable service going.

As the Patrol is totally community funded the Malvern members have decided to hold a Duathlon on Sunday, November 1st, to raise funds so they can continue this valuable contribution, to their local community.

After the announcement that the annual fishing competition would not be happening this year, a few phones calls were made. Two days later, Darfield ITM, Charlie Buttle and Steve Copping made sure the iconic event would go ahead as normal.

Both Friday and Saturday, the conditions were ideal for fishing, either on the flat, calm lake or from the bank in the sun.

There were three more entries than last year giving a total of 74 which was great, given the short notice of comp going ahead. 49 adults and 25 under 16 years olds, from all over Canterbury, along with Spud and Lochie Hewson who travelled down from Nelson, all enjoyed the event. It was great to see the regulars back again, but even more encouraging was the amount of new faces, young and old.

Fishing was tough going, with smaller numbers of fish being judged than normal.

Results: • Prettiest fish caught by a Male: John Button (1.648 brown trout) • Prettiest fish caught by a Female: Jacqui Laugesen (1.376 rainbow trout) • Under 16 Sarah Cruickshank (1.649kg rainbow trout) beating John’s fish by a huge 1 gram, to also take the trophy for overall prettiest fish caught.

Nominations for the coveted

Dick and Trout (D&T) award were few and far between this year. However cast your minds back twelve months and it wasn’t until the D&T award had been given to Dean Boyes and Ben Kars in 2019 for their misfortune, that someone else came forward and let on what they had done. The privilege of presenting the D&T award this year was therefore given to Trout (Bryan Thomas).

In Dick’s words “Trout pushed him under the bus”, by telling every one that he had put the boat into the water without a vital piece of the boat, namely the bung. The next morning Dick awoke and the water was over the battery. A lot of laughs were had when a picture of Dick in his blue and white striped boxers, was shown to everybody on a laptop

screen.

Many positive comments were rece ived r eg ard ing t he competition and the aim is to keep the event going, in conjunction with Darfield ITM. Each year a chosen charity will be nominated by ITM to receive any funds that are raised. This year the Malvern Community Patrol were very grateful to receive a cheque for $2,068, which will go towards the purchase of a new vehicle. The Community Patrol are the eyes and ears of our community and are dedicated to helping build safer communities, in partnership with NZ Police and other organisations.

Once again we cannot thank the sponsors enough for their on going support and a big thanks to all the anglers who took part.

On Saturday, October 10th the Hororata Fire Brigade gathered to celebrate the achievements of brigade members.

This Honours Evening was very special as Bridget Parsons was awarded her 14-year Long Service Good Conduct medal.

The Hororata and Coalgate Brigades were the last two Auxiliary Brigades left within Region 4, and have now been made standalone Brigades. This means the Brigades which were formally managed by a Senior Station Office, are now managed by a Chief Fire Officer (CFO) and Deputy Chief Fire Office (DCFO).

Malvern Squash Club, since Covid-19, have noticed an increase in enquires and new members.

On Monday nights they play in the Christchurch Interclub competition, which sees them either playing at Darfield or as far away as Sumner or Amberley.

Grades in this competition range from beginner, through to advanced/professional and Malvern Squash have had some fantastic results.

On Wednesday nights they host a pennant, which is also open to the public and non-members.

“This has been very successful and secured some new

members for the club,” commented Malvern Squash Club President, Brendan Clucas.

Clucas The pennant is run over six weeks and involves teams of six players, playing a member from other teams with the same ranking.

Each week everyone plays one game and the points are tallied at the end, to find the winning team.

“Squash is promoted as the healthiest sport you can play and new members are saying they enjoy playing socially during the week as it frees up their weekend, as well as getting some exercise” Brendan added. “Malvern Squash, based

Shooters at Darfield Gun Club were met with very windy conditions during the annual Hurst Waimak 100 event on Sunday, October 4th. Strong warm nor' westerlies turned suddenly to cold southerlies mid -competition, which led to some interesting shooting conditions.

September 26th, saw the opening of the Malvern Bowling season at Oxford. It began with the winning four’s teams (men versus women) from each club playing for the Mary Macartney Trophy.

Year 13 business studies’ students at Darfield High School, are encouraged to create a business through the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES).

The SUDmerge team of Rebecca Inch (CEO and Communications Director), Sophie Palmer (Production Director), Jessica Galletly (Marketing Director) and Emily White (Finance Director) commented that they have been really enjoying this programme. “We have been meeting all our deadlines in the hope of achieving a national excellence prize at the end of the year. The Scheme provides a great programme that we would all definitely recommend participating in,” they said.

“Our business is SUDmerge and our product is an eco-friendly dishwashing sprinkle that fizzes up in your sink as a replacement for dishwashing liquid,” the Team said. “It is completely sustainable and septic tank safe.

“We came up with the idea after brainstorming solutions to common household problems,”

the group added. “One was having to swish (foam) up the dishwashing liquid with your hand and the other was the plastic bottle used for the liquid.

Our product provides an ecofriendly solution to these problems.

“We posted on local community Facebook pages and have had a great influx of orders. So many so that we’ve had to order a lot more ingredients and are in the process of making up more of our jars to keep up with demand,” the Team concluded proudly.

The second YES team at DHS is made up of Amber Speechly (CEO, Communications and Product Director) and Mika Wealleans (Finance and Marketing Director) trading as Ambika - vertical gardens.

“We have really enjoyed this programme because it’s a challenge and gives us an insight into what running a business would be like outside of school,” the pair commented.

Both Amber and Mika also recommended that anyone interested in the programme, should definitely participate.

“There have been many highs in this programme,” the Ambika team said, “like meeting other passionate business people, as well as learning and trying new things. Some cons would be that the Group lost a number of its members early in the year, leaving the remaining two under considerable pressure to ensure everything is done to a professional standard.”

Ambika Vertical Gardens hand makes upcycled vertical gardens from wooden pallets.

“This is a sustainable and portable product that makes gardening more efficient and easier to access,” Amber and Mika explained.

“The pallets we use to make these gardens are not treated which is environment friendly and safe for our customers to grow food in.

“We came up with this idea after thinking about what would just be waste, if it wasn’t used. The vertical garden idea was so that people with small backyard areas could still have gardens that don’t take up much space.

Or they could have a decorative product to make a dull patio look nice.”

The Ambika Vertical Garden project was launched on September 16th and already sales have been incredibly heartening for the pair.

Promotion has been done through Facebook and Instagram, as well as a market display and through an existing business.

Ethan Rose had a very successful weekend of racing in Wellington, at the Secondary S c h o o l s M o un t a i n B i k e Championships, in the U20 age group category.

The three day event started on Friday, October 2nd with the downhill event, where Ethan qualified fourth overall. He gave it his all in the race final, beating his qualifying time by five seconds, to take the win. “I'm really happy to have won this event for the first time, in the past I've had top qualifying times but never held it together

on my race run. I held back in my qualifying run, then went for it in the race run, and it seemed to work out ok,” commented Ethan.

Day two was cross country day which was Ethan's main event for the weekend. Ethan race hard over the three laps battling it out with another Canterbury lad Jacob Turner.

“The pair took a great lead over the rest of the field, pushing hard at every overtaking opportunity, but nothing could separate them. It came down to a sprint finish, after over an

Heard Jacob took the win with Ethan right on his tail, both boys were over 2.5 minutes ahead of third place.

“I'm pretty happy with my ride, I made a wrong tactical decision in the last 200 metres of the race, but it would of been close either way. Jacob is a strong sprinter, better to make mistakes now than in bigger events,” Ethan explained.

Day three was enduro race day, a three stage timed downhill race. Ethan and Jacob had both taken the top two spots on day one and two, so it was now a battle for the win.

Jacob took a three second lead on stage one, but Ethan closed the small gap to two seconds after stage two. He put in the hard yards and stayed focused, to take the overall win by seven seconds.

“I'm stoked to take the win, I knew it was close between us. I just tried to keep smooth and fast all day, and it worked,” Ethan said proudly.

“After three days of racing there was just six seconds between the two New Zealand Mountain Bike (NZMTB) Hub team mates, the rivalry on the bikes made for great spectating all weekend, added Adam..

“The team mates (Ethan and Jacob) were a different class all weekend, proving they are both ready to race in bigger events come 2021. They will be racing at the McLeans Island 6 hour this weekend in the same team.

“After missing out on going to Europe this year because of Covid-19, Ethan will hopefully get a second chance and will set about chasing his goals from December onwards,” Adam concluded.

“It was a bit of a chilly start, but for those that attended there was good participation, and lots of fun was had using the SNAG (start new at golf, oversized and light) golf equipment. We hope to hold these a couple of time a year,” commented Pip Deans.

Results 10th October 2020 A small group of club members arrived early at the range, to calibrate the long and midrange targets. The electronic targets that the Malvern Rifle Club uses, calculates where each shot hits the target (using microphones) and displays the results on a webpage.

After the targets were calibrated, the shooters shifted to the 300 yard mound, for two rounds of shootings.

The cool, gusty, north east wind made for challenging shooting conditions, with rapid changes in wind angle and pressure. The results showed that some shooters handled the tricky conditions better than others.

Hororata Judges’ Box Last week the Malvern News published a piece on ‘Saving Hororata History’. The piece was actually written by Kate Foster not Helene Youngman, Secretary of the Hororata Historical Society as stated in the original piece.

Darfield stuttered against a strong Sefton side in the weekend leaving them with one win and one loss after 2 rounds.

Batting first with rain threatening, Darfield again, got off to a wobbly start with four batters back in the shed and the score sitting at 50. The innings looked like it was about to slide but Zak Foulkes (18) and Ryan Hughes (31) attempted to stop the decent and took the total to 107. Both batters showed restraint in testing conditions by limiting risky shots before Foulkes played a rare off drive only to nick it to first slip.

Hughes was joined by Ben Innes (37) and these two continued to play watchfully as they stubbornly moved the scoreboard forward. After Innes fell with the score at 136 the drizzle lifted and the remaining five batters could only muster another eight runs between them.

The innings break saw the sun appear and Sefton got about their chase of 145. Jesse Frew (3/32) took the first wicket with the score at 21 but the Sefton batters never really gave the visitors a look despite Darfield rotating bowlers and deploying innovative field positions. Frew took another wicket at 41 then again at 82 but Sefton were determined to reach their goal and another wicket with the score at 141 was simply cosmetic.

Darfield Tennis Club was one of many around the country running the New Zealand Tennis, Love Tennis last weekend. This is a programme to introduce people to tennis through fun and games, which in return helps clubs to grow.
