The Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade held their first fundraiser since Covid 19 on Sunday, October, 4th with another Wheels and Wings Day. The Brigade would like to extend a huge thank you to Charlie and Jo Draper, Draper for the use of their property. After weeks of planning, it was a shame the weather didn’t play the game on the day. The wind prevented a lot of planes and helicopters from flying, with only a few arriving before it became too strong. The Christchurch Model Aero Club put on an impressive display with their small planes which can travel at speeds of up to 100mph. It was amazing to see how fast and nimble they were. There were nineteen stall holders selling and displaying different products. Ranging from personalised wheelie bins,

The food and refreshment stalls all seemed to be busy with approximately 1500 - 2000 spectators visiting the 200 300 display of cars, tractors, trucks, motorbikes and vehicles. The BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse) motorcycle group were in attendance. They are an amazing group of people who look after children who have been abused at some time during their life. The American Classic Car Club supported this event with around twenty-one different makes and models of American Cars. They also gave the Sheffield Fire Brigade a large u n e x p e c t e d, b u t m u c h appreciated, donation.

The Malvern Community Arts Council (MCAC) will kick off Darfield Artweek 2020 with its 39th Opening Night gala on Friday, October 9th, 7pm at the Darfield Recreation Centre. This year’s judge, Areta Wilkinson, Wilkinson will announce the winner of the $2,000 Malvern Community Arts Council Premier Award. An array of additional awards, generously donated by local sponsors will also be presented. “We are thrilled at the level of sponsorship from local businesses and donations from individuals, especially following the financial challenges experienced by many people earlier this year”, Philip Baldwin, Baldwin Chairperson of MCAC, said. A number of local artists received awards in 2019, including Darfield residents SoonSoon-Lee Spicer and Jan Mitchell, Mitchell West Melton artist Helen Stevenson, and Christchurch artists Henry Turner and Philip Beadle. Beadle Darfield Artweek 2020 includes two exhibitions. The Darfield Recreation Centre is showcasing over 330 works of art in a variety of media, by over
165 artists from Selwyn, Christchurch, and across New Zealand. Te Huanui Art Gallery in Darfield is featuring a variety of artworks by selected artists who belong to Arts Canterbury. Artworks on display in both locations are available for sale, to be picked up at the conclusion of the exhibitions.

Following on from Jan Crossley’s cheerio message recently, is my hello snippet - reassuring everyone it is business as normal at the Malvern and Rolleston News. The team wish Jan C well in her retirement and look forward to watching the progress on her amazing new house. We will miss her and her ability to piece together well-written articles, helped by her extensive knowledge of the area. No doubt you will see her out and about more often with her gorgeous wee grandies. Chevonn Walker will continue to assist me in the advertising and layout department and people often comment about her helpful, smiley attitude. Chevonn is very artistic so
creating and designing adverts allows her to show off her flare. Lucinda Jarvis is stepping into more of the editorial side and looks forward to people in the community providing her with leads on possible stories. Selwyn audiences will delight at the return of The Woolshed Tour to two woolsheds in the region this spring, with The Bitches’ Box and Mel Parsons touring a brand new double-bill show of music, theatre, and comedy around the South Island for the first time since their sell-out tour in 2016. The Woolshed Tour will be staged for two nights at Snowdon Station, in Windwhistle and two nights at Brooksdale, in Springfield. Each evening will kick off with an hour of socialising from 6pm, with a licensed cash bar and a fundraising barbeque for the local school. Ticket holders are encouraged to arrive early and hungry, as it is a wonderful opportunity to support both Windwhistle and Springfield schools respectively. The show is staged in two halves with comedy duo The Bitches’ Box (Amelia Amelia Dunbar and Emma Newborn) Newborn and their brand new show, Life’s A Bitch. It’s the third instalment in their suite of hilarious, romping comedies, all about life as a dog. Singer-songwriter Mel Parsons is the 2020 VNZMA (Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards) Folk Artist of the Year, and brings showgoers a new set of songs from her forthcoming album, along with plenty of laughs and old favourites for good measure.

Selwyn District Council are ready to notify a revised new District Plan in early October. While it’s not certain what this new plan will contain, we understand that the current large number of planning zones is to be reduced. No doubt this will change the zoning for parts of our urban and rural zones and may also change the minimum area you can easily subdivide your land to. With any plan change there are winners and losers as the new rules look to impose restrictions across the newly formed zones and relax restrictions in others. Some will be able to create smaller allotments, others may find they are no longer able to subdivide easily. Once notified, any person can make a submission and explain to decision makers why their land should be able to be subdivided to smaller (or larger) allotment sizes, and this needs to be backed by some robust planning reasons to be successful. However, you may choose to utilise the existing rule structure to subdivide your property. If you have been thinking about this for a while, and you can easily subdivide, the uncertainty around district plan changes could be the stimulant that spurs you into action today. Currently in Selwyn the primary Urban Zones are Living 1 and 2 zones, although the minimum allotments for these zones vary between townships. The Living 1 at Lincoln, Leeston, Doyleston and Darfield is 650m², 750m² in Rolleston and 800m² in Dunsandel, Kirwee and
smaller or larger section sizes in these townships. It is these variations that Council is aiming to reduce. Each site is different and the planning rules that specifically apply such as driveway widths, setbacks from streams and the shape of new allotments will need to be addressed in any planning application seeking the subdivision of your property. Being aware of what is possible on your site whether subdividing or building under the existing district plan is also important for understanding how the new district plan might change the future of your site. This can be useful for making a submission in support of the changes or in

Although it will be a few years before any proposed district plan changes have an effect on your ability to subdivide or otherwise use your land, understanding what you can do now is an important tool for ensuring any changes fit with your expectations for your land. The best way to know what is possible with your land under the current planning regime is to contact your favourite planning company and make an enquiry.
The eleventh Great Oxford Garage Sale was held on Sunday, October 4th. It was a fine but blustery day, which saw lots of bargain hunters visiting forty six locations, that had some great items on offer, from a t-shirt to a tractor. “It was busy early on, even with the wind playing havoc with the goods in the more exposed areas,” commented a spokesperson. “The shops took care of all
visitors with coffee and a bite to eat,” they added. The Oxford Farmers Market was well visited and KiwiKiwi Hounds were showing off their adoptable Greyhounds. The Anglican Church, YWAM (Youth With A Mission) and the Oxford Playcentre, took advantage of the day to fundraise. “Though less busy than previous years, it was still very much enjoyed by many,” they concluded.

To increase your experience of this heritage site, The Greendale Community Trust is pleased to announce that the Greendale Walkway is now open. The Trust has been working on this project during the last year. The walkway leaves the
Arboretum at the stile over the north fence, leading walkers to the nursery block containing many rare and different tree species, that in the late 1800s and early 1900s TW Adams trialled to see if they would grow on the Canterbury Plains. The woodland path meanders through the trees, to the northern boundary of the land that TW left in his will to the

University of Canterbury. From here walkers cross open farmland with views across the plains, before reaching the Greendale Domain. To return to the Arboretum walkers have the choice of a rural walk along Greendale Road and Adams Road, or retracing their steps. On Sunday, September 20th a Waimakariri Riverside Clean Up was held. The weather was nice, which helped attract volunteers from the community, as well as staff from ECan. The clean up started at Intake Road and went along as far as Courtenay Road, with people collecting rubbish along the way. Three tonnes of rubbish was collected and taken away by ECan. Another three tonnes of rubbish
was identified as needing to be removed, which was later taken by Ecan. It was reported that volunteers found it to be a very rewarding day and ECan supplied a barbeque which was a lovely addition. The next planned day for rubbish removal along the river will be in February 2021 and helpers are always welcomed.

Future Leader Scholars from Lincoln University ran a community project called ‘Primary Focus’ on Friday, September 25th at Hororata Primary School. The goal of this event comes from a desire to promote social, mental and physical well-being within the rural community, by providing an opportunity for parents and relatives to leave the farm for a few hours and participate in activities that include the whole family. Through the running of competitions/activities on the day it was hoped that it would reinforce the idea that spending time with family is an integral part of mental fitness for all whanau members. There were heaps of prizes up for grabs, as well as spot prizes. There was a Dads and Kids baking competition; Mums and Kids sculpture competition; introduce your pet competition;
plus a Staff recyclables competition. The Harraways lunch, catered by Country Feasts, was a generous addition to the day. It was gifted to Hororata Primary School by the winners of the Harraways Junior Warriors competition which was held at last year’s Hororata Highland Games. The winning Warriors team was from Darfield High
School and consisted of Ryan Thomas, Thomas Tobi Moore, Moore Riley McNae, McNae and Finn Jacobs and they, in conjunction with those that joined them to win the Junior Tug O’ War (Saige Saige McNae, McNae Abbi Moore and Zoe Parker), Parker) donated the lunch they won in recognition of all the hard work the School had put into the Hororata Highland Games event.

The recent ‘Take a Bite Out of Hunger’ food drive was very successful, with many donations replenishing the local foodbanks stock. “People were really thoughtful and generous which was heartwarming to see. The thing that struck me the most though, was hearing the personal stories of those donating,” commented Rachael Inch, Inch Community Stream Leader Malvern Hub. “One person lost her job during Covid lockdown, but managed to get another one, so donated because she understood what people were going through. A huge bag of frozen mince and other thoughtful donations came flooding in,” she added. “Children from Annabel’s Educare dropped off a large box of goods and local businesses managed to pop down and donate also. They talked about the ongoing support to the local community from local
businesses. It really highlighted the passion and support for our community.” Rachael explained. “A huge thank you to the local youth councillors who gave up their time to help and again to all those who donated,” Rachael said proudly. On Sunday, September 27th, the Darfield High School (DHS) smallbore shooting team consisting of Piper Benbow, Benbow Ryan Booth and Liam Barnhill travelled to Rangiora to represent their school. Under the guidance of coaches, Craig Benbow and John Booth the team competed in the Target Shooting New Zealand, InterSecondary Schools Inter-Island Match for 2020. This year the competition format was adjusted due to Covid 19. The match was originally
planned to be held over two days, hosted in the South Island, in Blenheim. With the uncertainty of being able to host with a large gathering of people, Target Shooting New Zealand (TSNZ) made the call to spread the hosting of the competition over seven venues across the country. All shooters started with shooting three cards (ten targets per card). The top twelve South Island shooters then had a shoot-off, with the top twelve North Island

shooters, shooting two cards each. Piper made it into the South Island team, with Ryan narrowly missing out by one point. The North Island team won the match, scoring a total of 1944.82 (a new record), with the South Islands total score being 1925.61. After the North versus South match, the top twelve overall shooters made up a New Zealand team of ten shooters plus two reserves. This team then shoots against Great Britain as a postal shoot. Piper also made this team, coming in at tenth place. The results for the postal shoot won’t be available until Great Britain have shot their cards, when their season starts up. “Overall the DHS team came eleventh out of twenty seven teams with a total score of 853.21 out of a possible (900.90), which is a fantastic result,” commented one of the coaches, John Booth. Results for the first three rounds were: Piper: 99.6, 96.2 & 98.3 = 293.11 Ryan: 96.1, 95.2 & 93.0 = 284.3 Liam: 92.1, 92.4 & 92.2 = 276.7.

MALVERN COMMUNITY BOARD MEETING IN DARFIELD, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 28TH SEPTEMBER 2020 The Board meeting on Monday was held in the Darfield Library and Service Centre, following a workshop during which the Board received a presentation on the Proposed District Plan from planning staff. The Proposed District Plan will be released for community consultation shortly. Board members discussed a variety of topics following on from the community committee meetings they attended in the past month. The Board is currently preparing to have a presence at the Culture Fest in Lincoln later in October and at the Courtenay A & P Show in November, where rubbish recycling will be the key display. Information on the proposed District Plan will also be displayed and Council staff will be available to talk to. The Board appointed Board members Judith Pascoe and John Morten to the Westview Special Fund Committee. Nominations will shortly be received for representatives from the Darfield Community Committee and Darfield Recreation Reserve Committee. The date for the inaugural meeting of the Westview Special Fund Committee will be determined as soon as these come through. Watch out for more information on this fund and the types of projects in the Darfield area that could be funded from it. The Board will have another dropdrop-in session in October, on Monday 12th from 2:30pm - 5pm, in the Sheffield Hall. Anyone is welcome to attend the drop-in session and share their ideas with the Board and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. Past drop-in sessions have been very successful with ideas received for community projects and community issues discussed. Members of the public are welcome to attend the next Community Board meeting, or talk to the Board about any issues in their community. Please contact the Board secretary board.secretary@selwyn.govt.nz to make an appointment if you wish to speak. An agenda can be found on the Council website on the Thursday before the meeting. After an uncertain start to the season and many regional and national competitions cancelled due to Covid 19, the Malvern Association scrambled a slightly shorter season than usual and are delighted that most of our perennial members and even a handful of new members chose to complete the season. Congratulations to the winners of each grade and especially to Liam Barnhill, Barnhill James Grafton and Blake Woolley who have shot above their grade for the first time and will complete in C Grade next season.

The Darfield Premier team got their season off to a perfect start with a four wicket win over Oxford-Rangiora at Mainpower Oval in Rangiora on Saturday, October 3rd. Stand in captain Liam Foulkes may have lost the toss, but when his left arm strike bowler, Tom Innes took four wickets before Oxford had reached 40 runs, he wouldn't have minded being put into bowl first. Oxford's innings wobbled further as Ryan Hughes took three and then Jordy Frew helped h imse lf to two wickets. Oxford’s no.10 and no.11 pair added 36 before Liam Foulkes snatched the last. The total of 126 was inflated by some wayward bowling with Darfield conceding 19 wides. The chase got off to a poor start, with both openers failing to reach double figures and
if Henry Shipley needed motivation to make a big score next weekend, then surely his dismissal for a duck this week is all he requires. The Canterbury all-rounder is over due to produce for his club side and I pity the team that is on the receiving end when he does. Jesse Frew (28) and Tom Dempster (18) steadied the middle overs as they cautiously added runs and when they departed the next batters simp ly carried on the progression towards victory. Ryan Hughes (13), Ben Innes (25*) and Robbie Foulkes (9*) made sure the win was sealed with more than ten overs remaining.

For anyone out there thinking of playing tennis, there’s a twilight competition on Thursday nights starting at the end of October run by Malvern Tennis. “We have two grades, called Competitive and Intermediate”, explained spokesperson Glenys Gillanders. “I can assure you that tennis in both grades will be competitive, but we split the competition into two grades, to make matches more even and enjoyable,” added Glenys. “The Competitive grade is for more experienced players, and a lot of the Saturday tennis competition players choose to play in this grade. The
Intermediate grade is for those that still want good tennis, but may not be playing two or more times a week,” Glenys concluded. Players play three doubles matches for thirty minutes each, each game with one of their team mates. A man was driving and saw a truck stalled on the side of the highway that had ten penguins standing next to it. The man pulled over and asked the truck driver if he needed any help. The truck driver replied, "If you can take these penguins to the zoo while I wait for AAA that will be great!" The man agreed and the penguins hopped into the back of his car. Two hours later, the trucker was back on the road again and decided to check on the penguins. He showed up at the zoo and they weren't there! He headed back into his truck and started driving around the town, looking for any sign of the penguins, the man, or his car. While driving past a movie theater, the truck driver spotted the guy walking out with the ten penguins. The truck driver yelled, "What are you doing? You were supposed to take them to the zoo!" The man replied, "I did and then I had some extra money so I took them to go see a movie."
