The original Malvern Mullet Dudes (MMDs), Tobi Moore, Moore Johnny Barnard, Barnard Ryan Thomas, Thomas Finn Jacobs, Jacobs Todd Thomas, Thomas Cole Atutolu and Dylan Duffy are getting closer to their planned mullet shave-off, to be held on Saturday, August 8th at Kirwee Rugby Clubrooms. The MMDs are raising funds for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) by being sponsored to shave off their iconic mullet hair. MND is a group of diseases causing the death of nerve cells (neurones) that control the muscles enabling movement, speech, swallowing and breathing. Tobi came up with the initial idea, to specifically raise funds for MND in memory of his, Uncle George Redmond. Redmond George (also Johnny Barnard’s Uncle) succumbed to this debilitating disease earlier this year. The boys are really hoping to raise between $5000 $10,000 to not only help elevate awareness, but also to provide continued support to

those affected by the disease. If these boys reach their targeted amount they will be shaving their mullets off with more than a few parents and teachers heaving a sigh of relief!. The boys have received a considerable amount of support already. The group of participants has grown in size and family and friends are behind them all the way. Jack Barnes from West Melton has come on board and offered up his mullet in recognition of a colleague of his mothers who has the debilitating disease. Young William Wilson from Kirwee is keen to join the ‘big boys’ and help raise funds also. His family and friends are trying to get over $500 sponsorship for him to be able to sport a new hair-do while supporting a worthy cause. The MMDs have numerous family members coming to help with the shave-off and they’re hoping All Black Jack Goodhue will come along as well; but

“The Focus for Future - Selwyn Environmental Film Competition was ‘launched’ in May for those who might want to start thinking about their production as we experienced various levels of ‘lockdown’,” explained Dave Fitzjohn, Fitzjohn Project Manager, Lincoln Envirotown Trust. “In the past we know that a number of these films have been planned and produced during the July holidays and we

The Hollywood themed event is a year’s highlight for many that attended. “Overall the Formal was both a success, and a joyful event,” commented Monique St. Clair Newman, Newman a member of the Senior Formal Committee. “Everyone that helped out did a really good job and it was appreciated by all,” she added. “Thank you to all who made this event possible,” Monique concluded.

Today, Tomorrow and Forever celebrates Allan Hooper’s pottery and drawings by locals Ben Groters and Corey Koppe at Te Huanui, opening on Friday, July 31st. Allan Hooper celebrated his eightieth birthday in July, but he still enjoys working with clay and firing up his kilns. A visit to the Darfield Brickworks sparked Allan’s interest in clay. He was working as a general engineer in the early 1970’s and needed a specific kind of brick to build a smelting furnace. After a decade of reading about pottery and kilns, and learning the processes involved in working with clay, Allan opened Albion Brick & Pottery in Darfield in 1984, operating the business for eleven years. Ben Groters has spent time travelling around the world

working various agricultural jobs, sketching in travel diaries as he went. Ben now works with fine tipped ink pens to create landscapes and hunting scenes from his adventures enjoying New Zealand's back country. His works are often inspired by black and white photographs of conflict, with plenty of detail and contrast in moments of relative calm. He is still drawn to this style of image and it is his passion to show the stories from past events, other than just landscapes alone. Corey Koppe enjoyed the distraction of creating art through the unfamiliar and uncertainty of the first few months of 2020. He continues to work with Prismacolour pencils, finding they suit his style of bold colours and fine details. Corey’s works shown in

this exhibition are combination of his love for old subject matter and an admiration for nature, nostalgic and lifelike in their nature.

Art can be a solitary pursuit, as local artists Margaret White and SoonSoon-Lee Spicer both know. Both are printmakers, both are second career artists (having come from teaching and legal backgrounds respectively), and both work from studio spaces at home. This means that to a large extent, they have had to find their own way in developing their practice. “However, having connected with each other earlier this year, we have found ourselves swapping books, sharing ink and paper samples, letting each other know of opportunities, suggesting techniques to each other and simply enjoying discussing the ups and downs of our art practice over a cup of tea,” Soon-Lee explained. From this, they saw the

potential for a wider group and have recently established Selwyn Practicing Artists. This is a group for practicing artists who live, work or play in the Selwyn District to meet and to provide encouragement, inspiration, information and connection to one another, by discussing: • Work in progress, techniques, inspiration; • practical matters such as exhibiting, working with galleries, promotion; • opportunities and resources such as exhibitions, courses, books, etc. “It will be interesting to see how the group evolves, and we’re hoping that as well as regular discussion, the group will either formally, or informally, extend to other activities such as shared

exhibitions, field trips, and guest speakers,” both Margaret and Soon-Lee added. “We know that our district is home to amazing artists, as evidenced throughout Selwyn galleries, and at art events such as Darfield Artweek and the Rolleston Arts Heart Exhibition, and we’re very much looking forward to connecting with them,” the pair concluded. Both artists are delighted that Te Huanui Gallery, in Darfield has made its perfect space available to host this group. The plan is to meet monthly, with the inaugural meeting taking place in August. Welcome to our new monthly column where Malvern/Selwyn Real estate is the headline and not just a national perspective. Real estate always make great grabs with punchy headlines, however it is not until the fine print that you get to find out what is happening outside of Auckland. There are always plenty of pundits predicting what is going to happen to the real estate market and this is lapped up by main stream media. Real estate is always a great dinner-party topic and everyone has an opinion. The reality is often different from those headlines and the information dated/biased, or just plain assumptions. In this column we will aim to provide an accurate assessment of what is happening to the real estate market in our area, and currently. The best way to base this is on the sales that are happening. Post lockdown has been busy. Most sales are attracting multiple offers and prices have held up accordingly. June saw a total of fifteen residential/lifestyle sales in Malvern. Rural sales (over 20Ha) were a little slower, but several contracts were written and should settle shortly. There is a strong demand for rural land to be leased and this does give our farm owners an opportunity to see a return without having to sell the land itself. The feel is that we are in a sellers’ market. Many sellers are waiting to ‘see what happens’. Fortunately for those on the market already, the buyers aren't waiting, hence the sales’ numbers and prices being achieved. School holidays have also slowed those coming to the market, but buyer numbers attending open homes remains high. It’s been a great start to the first week of Term 3, with the ‘Warm Wednesday’ Hot Chocolate re-activated after a delayed start. “Trinity Church are thrilled to be serving our simply wonderful young people of the Darfield community with hot chocolate, marshmallows and a special swirl of condensed milk,” said Lynmaree Sopoaga, Sopoaga (Aunty Lyn). “Add to that a cheery, ‘have a great day at school’ blessing, and it’s smiles all round,” she added. The team of volunteers dispense hot chocolate outside Trinity Church each Wednesday between 7:50am and 8:20am; on Wednesday July 22nd (their first for this winter) the group dispensed 74 hot chocolates to

U3A Malvern (University of the Third Age, an international movement whose aims are the education and stimulation of mainly retired members of the community - those in their third 'age' of life), held their first lecture after Covid-19 lockdown on Friday, July 17th. The amount of chatter showing everyone’s pleasure at again being able to meet. The guest speaker this month was Kurt Frauenstein a pilot whose lecture was entitled, ‘Flying, A Different Approach’. A pilot in Angola during the civil war Kurt explained that not only was it different because of the atrocities of war, with missiles and gun fire to be avoided, but he also graphically described and compared the differences between flying in Angola and New Zealand. In New Zealand safety is paramount, cleanliness is a high priority, there are ground crew plus marked and lighted runways and the control tower to enable safe landings and take offs. There was really no comparison. In Angola, there were no marked runways, no lighting and no control towers, just rough dusty paddocks in which to land the cargo planes. Hence there were accidents. All flights from Luanda, the capital, had to be taken in daylight hours necessitating long flying times to enable them to return to Luanda; the only place with

The 27th annual Malvern Game Hunters compeGGon, held last weekend, saw around the same number of registraGons as last year. Approximately 200 hunters bagged a good number of large, impressive animals for the weigh-in on Sunday at the Coalgate Tavern, which saw people from all over the South Island a ending. Weights overall this year were up in most secGons compared to last year, with the heaviest boar being 10kgs heavier. Nick Thackwell weighed in an impressive Red Stag taking out the weight category as well as the Douglas Score. Emma Cunningham took out her secGon of the pig carrying compeGGon, once again showing her strong form in this event. Kane McKay won the Heaviest Boar in the U16 age group for the 2nd year in a row, likewise Jake Cleland with the Heaviest Hare for the 3rd year. Dan Encell was awarded the Mark Ranui Memorial Trophy for the biggest boar weighed-in from a Malvern Game Hunters Club member. Te Ara Kākāriki Co-Chair Craig Pauling greeted over eighty guests at the friends of Te Ara Kākāriki meeting at Lincoln University on the evening of Wednesday, July 22nd. Craig spoke of the journey of Te Ara Kākāriki and acknowledged the contribution of many to achieving Te Ara Kākāriki’s vision to create a native Greenway. Reflections on the Trust’s

achievements in 2019 included the planting of 20,000 native seedlings with the help of over 1700 volunteers. Recognition was also received for Te Ara Kākāriki’s Kids Discovery Plantout Programme which works with Selwyn schools, educating young people as to why biodiversity is important. In 2020 the Trust will plant their 100,000th native seedling and

100th green dot. Department of Conservation’s Nicola Toki, Toki currently in the role of Director of Operations, Eastern South Island gave a presentation entitled, ‘Future Proof and Nature Rich’. The audience were treated to a thoroughly engaging, often humorous and very thoughtprovoking talk. Nicola challenged the audience around the disconnect between our identity and reality with a large proportion of the population believing our biodiversity is in good shape. The evening concluded with a celebration of the great work being carried out by landowners. The Diana Isaac Cup was presented by Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust’s (ICWT) Catherine Ott. Ott The cup is presented every other year by ICWT and Te Ara Kākāriki, acknowledging landowner’s restoration efforts, weaving native plants into the working lands of the Selwyn District. For 2020 there were dual recipients of the Cup and prize, as both owners have produced equally outstanding restoration projects on their properties, providing valuable contributions to local biodiversity. Tony and Mary Edwards have put considerable time into their complex and challenging site in Hororata, working hard to remove exotics and weeds, a job which is ongoing. Susan Hall and Kevin Dunn of Kirwee, are dedicated, knowledgeable and keen to keep learning and planting, despite some biological challenges. Their Greendot consists of over 8,000 native plants and is in an area, otherwise barren of native plantings. The passion of those who attended for the vision of Te Ara Kākāriki was palpable and the sight of many from the audience leaving cradling a totara to plant as part of Te Ara Kākāriki’s totara 2020 celebration to mark their 100,000 plant was heartwarming and concluded an excellent evening.

Many folk throughout the country have gravitated toward the idea of growing more of their own food supply in response to the dramatic changes we have seen in our Nation and across the world this year, as evidenced by the sellout purchases of online seed supplies during lockdown. There is a certain satisfaction in successfully growing some of our necessary food in the backyard, as many previous generations of New Zealanders have done before us. With this in mind, Nourish Community garden Darfield and Nourish Springfield are planning a free seed and seedling swap to be implemented in two

stages across the first few weeks of Spring, in both Darfield and Springfield. It will work like this: On the last weekend of August, free seed, seed raising mix and growing containers will be distributed from the community garden on Russell Street, Darfield and from 14 Regent Street, Springfield (while supplies last). Along with the seed and growing medium, instructions and top growing tips for raising successful seedlings will also be shared. Participants will then be encouraged to return four weeks later bearing their pots of excess seedlings, to become a part of a giant seedling swap. “This will be a fun way to meet other gardeners of all abilities, and not only swap seedlings, but also gardening knowledge and enthusiasm as well,” commented Nourish spokespersons.

Twenty one year old, ex Whitecliffs resident, Ashy Batchelor, Batchelor is currently making quite a name for herself internationally. Now based in Christchurch, the independent, self-managed artist, Ashy can usually be found either there, Auckland or Sydney, in fact wherever the music takes her. Many locals will remember her from performances at events locally and more recently the larger stages of Christmas in the Park, and X Factor. “I didn’t grow up in a musical family, but there was always music playing at home, or in the car,” Ashy explained. Rather than tertiary study her music career began straight after high school. “I decided to jump right in and figure it out for myself,” Ashy said. “It was a huge risk, but I knew what kind of artist I wanted to be and I was always writing,” she said. “I think what I’ve learned is that the industry has a lot of unpredictability, in both good and bad ways. I’ve had opportunities that I never thought I’d get and other things that I’m trying very hard to achieve. It’s difficult to look at myself as an artist and decide if I’m living up to my own expectations, but I’m very proud of where I’ve got to,” she added. “This year has been more exciting than most, I think the release of my single ‘EGO’ really stepped it up for me. I was made Apple Music’s ‘New Artist

of the Week’ and my music video has been recognised for the amazing project it is. “I also imagine if you’d told me when I was thirteen that I would have had over 1.25 million streams on Spotify I would have been amazed,” she said. The video’s concept was to follow Ashy on photo shoot day. “The aspect that was the hardest to achieve was nailing the two fashion looks,” Ashy said. “We wanted them both to be contrasting but also fit with who I was as an artist and the song itself. “We also shot it all in one day so all of the shots with a makeup brush on my face, or my hair being done was all real and we captured that and put it in the video to give it more of a behind the scenes concept,” Ashy reported. “I’m super stoked that I got to speak about the video on ZM and The Edge. It also got played on TV Three’s Newshub, had an article in The Press, and it’s now play listed on the Edge TV which is the best premiere I could have asked for! “Moving forward I’m planning on doing some more live shows and releasing an EP. When everything gets back to more normality I would love to head overseas to write some more music and play live,” she said. “I’m currently deciding on plans for my next releases, so expect new music from me soon,” Ashy concluded.

Local Enduro rider Hamish Macdonald has recently been crowned as the winner of the New Zealand Enduro Championship title. Hamish had come close to a win on previous occasions and had achieved the class title before, but this year was his year to take the overall title. This success comes a year after his victory winning the 2019 125cc Youth Enduro GP World Championship. The four-round New Zealand series had two back-to-back days of racing at Martinborough and Masterton in June this year and the double-header finale was held fifteen kilometres west of Bulls, at Santoft Forest. Hamish went into the third round, in third position, and after some great riding won round three which put him on top of the series. Hamish would normally have been competing

in Europe at this time of year, but due to Covid-19 a home stay was scheduled. “The NZ Championship was great. It was fantastic for me to be back in New Zealand racing against all my friends and having some really good fun,” Hamish said. “There were 150 riders at each round, this was great to see as lockdown had just finished in New Zealand. I think everybody was keen to get out and do something productive and fun,” he added. “All the races went smoothly for me, no hiccups, and I felt like I was riding well, making no mistakes,” he added proudly. “Straight after the race I flew to Milan, Italy to prepare for the first European races as they are slowly starting to happen again,” Hamish said. “Training is going good now I’m back in

Italy. The weather here is hot and dry being in the mid 30’s most days,” he explained. “The heat takes it out of you so it’s crucial to drink plenty and to eat properly,” he concluded.

Saturday saw the Prebbleton Penguins head up the road to take on the Darfield Ducks at the Duckpond in what some had called the ‘battle of the birds’. This game promised to be a real tough contest with both teams firmly ensconced in the top four for the Coleman Shield. Darfield coming off a good win over Lincoln and Prebbleton, as yet unbeaten for the 2020 season. In a polar opposite to last week, conditions were outstanding for mid-winter rugby with the Duckpond yet again in pristine condition. The start of the game saw both teams feeling each other out and set the tone for the rest of the match, with solid defence on both sides blunting any attack, or break, that was made. However just like last week a solid set piece inside the Prebbleton red zone enabled the Ducks back to run another strike move with the result being the same again, Sheldon Reed scoring untouched under the bar. Darfield up seven nil after seven minutes. Following this, both sides had further attacks nullified by the goal line defence of both teams. Darfield however managed to chalk up another

try after twenty minutes to centre Kieran Meikle after an attempted short 22 drop-kick backfired for Prebbleton. Prebbleton set up camp inside the Ducks’ 22 for a sustained period and as a testament to Darfield’s defence took a penalty shot at goal after thirty minutes to trail 12-3. Darfield then managed to turn the table on Prebbleton and kept them inside their own half and built pressure by maintaining possession. This told in the end with Sheldon scoring his second try of the game in the right hand corner. Shortly after, Geoff Cridge made a break to score his first try for the Ducks, Darfield into the break at 24-8. The second half began the same as the first half had ended, with a further two tries to Darfield inside the first five minutes. The first of these was scored by Toby Kars after he had regathered a kick through by Richard Catherwood. Catherwood Toby then turned provider, after making a clean break and drawing the last defender, he threw the pass to send Lance Meikle away to dot down. Prebbleton managed to score a consolation try on the fifty

minute mark to bring the score to 34-8. With half an hour of time remaining this was to be the final score for the game. Once again both sides produced stoic goal-line defence to deny the other side, time after time. Lance Meikle snared 3 MVP points for an outstanding game, Scott McIlroy picked up 2 and Toby Kars 1. A great result for the Ducks managing to get a bonus point win to have us sitting in second spot on the table. Special thanks go out to Kelly McIlroy for organising Ladies’ day, it was good to see all the wives and partners from the senior sides at the Club enjoying themselves. Also thanks to Will Wright and his crew for holding a highly successful Irish night, that probably saw many people slightly jaded on Sunday!
