Malvern Netball’s inaugural Walking Netball initiative attracted a small group of enthusiastic women who took the opportunity to give it a go; despite a dismal wet Saturday.

Team numbers were made up with some of the social players before two teams, with vast age differences, learnt the basic rule variations, warmed up as per the ACC warm up suggestions and took to the court.

“Most of us had probably played the running game of netball in past lives,” reported spokesperson for Walking Netball Val Mackenzie, Mackenzie “and for whatever reason, wanted to continue playing the game we love. However,” she stressed, “you do not need to have been a netballer to be able to enjoy the adapted game.

Burnt in Time, a business owned and run by Niki and Anthony Mason, Mason has recently been established in Darfield.

The business takes images, or drawings, and permanently etches them into wood, creating an enduring and long-lasting memory.

The Mason family arrived in Darfield from Burnham about three and a half years ago seeking a country community to bring their daughters Chloe and Carla up in.

Their business initially began as a hobby, but the pair soon discovered they thoroughly enjoyed preserving amazing works of art for customers.

Both Niki and Anthony are self taught in this field but their talented creations have already bought pleasure to many.

The business specialises in making not only home signage, but also personalised clocks and custom made photo images. They can fashion personal and special gifts for any occasion, commenting that it’s definitely the gift that will always be remembered.

“We pride ourselves on having affordable prices and offer hassle free, no obligation quotes,” Niki said. “We use mainly Rimu, Redwood and Macrocarpa, as these hard woods handle having images burnt into them well,” she added.

Burnt in Time images can take anywhere from two hours to fourteen hours to complete.

“We use either free hand (pyrography), or a machine (a CNC Laser), to burn the image into the wood,” Niki explained.

“If the piece is being hand done we trace the image onto the wood first, before it is

burnt on,” she said.

“After the piece is completed to our satisfaction - and we’re extremely fussy about quality - a clear varnish coat is put on the item to help with its longevity.

We pride ourselves on creating high quality work and we won’t

send anything out unless we are totally satisfied with it first,” Niki reported. “We are happy to send items around the country to wherever they are needed,” she concluded.

It’s time to take your home and farm security seriously and implement security measures: In recent weeks, and over last weekend a number of farmers have had roadside boundary gates stolen. This is a time of the year when gates, electric fence and electric fence units are stolen by criminals setting themselves up for the Spring cannabis growing season.

Here follows some crime prevention advice for farmers to apply (also provided in last week’s edition of the Malvern News):

After eighteen months of waiting, the people of Darfield Baptist Church are pleased to finally have a new minister.

James Fotheringham and his wife Rachel were to have moved to Darfield at the end of April, but a certain virus interrupted plans.

People may be wondering what would motivate anyone to move from the winterless north to Darfield, especially in July!

James and Rachel both had a real sense that it was God’s time for a move southwards.

1. Invert the top hinge (so it is downwards facing) of all roadside boundary gates, so that they cannot be lifted off the strainer posts and hinge bolt.

2. Weld over the base of the hinge, and hinge bolt and nut.

3. Weld your farm name on the top frame of the gate in an obvious place.

4. Underneath and at the bottom hinge end of the steel framed gate, weld in your driver’s licence number into the frame, which will aid in identification of your gate if it is stolen.

5. Chain and padlock your roadside boundary gates.

Please all farmers and small land holders, take this advice on board now and act on it.

He is originally from Ireland and spent many years in Scotland, some of them as a youth worker, then pastoring in England followed, before moving to New Zealand in 2006. James has until recently been the pastor of Doubtless Bay Christian Centre in the far North, where he has served for thirteen years. James and Rachel enjoy rural life and are looking forward to settling into living in Darfield. They enjoy

travel, walking, cycling and entertaining.

James and Rachel have two adult daughters, Charis and Sophia who are studying in Auckland; they are very family oriented and their girls are planning to spend time in Darfield, with their parents, during holiday breaks.

James and Rachel are looking forward to getting to know local people and making connections with other ministers in the district.

“We are sure they will be a blessing, not just to Darfield Baptist Church, but to our community as a whole,” said spokesperson for Darfield Baptist Church, Glenys Knopp.

A new development is about to take place in Darfield - on the South Terrace site, previously occupied by Gnomes Alpine Sports and Malvern News. A private developer will shortly break ground on the corner site (South Terrace and Bray Street) for a new PGG Wrightson (PGW) Rural Supplies store and office building. The property is the site of the original Pyne Gould Guinness building in the township.

PGW’s General Manager Retail and Water, Nick Berry, Berry said “This purpose-built development allows for an improved customer experience with the opportunity to expand the existing product range and stock new products. We look forward to welcoming our loyal and new customers to this modern store.”

The current Darfield store and office is an integral part of the wider PGW store network, which has 92 Rural Supplies and Fruitfed Supplies stores throughout New Zealand.

As well as the store, the current building accommodates approximately twenty PGW employees covering a variety of business units to support their farmer customers.

Darfield’s Fire Brigades are welcoming the announcement that one million dollars has been allocated to construct a new building for housing the vehicles and equipment of the Brigades.

Many local people do not realise that Darfield presently has two brigades. The red trucks were organised by the NZ Fire Service under the Fire Services Act 1972, while the yellow trucks were organised by the local district council under the Forest and Rural Fires Act 1977.

In 2017 both acts were repealed to be replaced with the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act 2017. At that time

approximately 58 different fire brigades were replaced by one, covering all of New Zealand. This increased the number of volunteer firefighters from the fire service’s 7,500, to 11,000 in the new organisation.

The new building will mean that instead of the Rural Brigade being in Mathias Street, using the old Selwyn Council building, and the Urban Brigade being in North Terrace, both brigades will be situated in the same area. The function of the urban brigade is to cover emergencies such as building fires, motor vehicle accidents, medical events, home safety visits, and community resilience, while the prime responsibility

In addition we have decided that the two brigades in Darfield will be amalgamated, so that it has a single management structure, and eventually better coordinated training, fire management, and financial systems.

There is a saying that a week is a long time in politics and the past few weeks have certainly demonstrated that. As Members of Parliament it is right that our views are subject to scrutiny by the people we represent. However, the relentless pressure of being in the media spotlight can certainly take its toll on individuals and their families. So, while I am saddened and disappointed for my close friend Todd Muller that he has found himself unable to continue in the role of Opposition Leader, he has my full support in prioritising his health and the wellbeing of his family. While the situation with Todd was both sad and unexpected, the National Party has moved quickly to appoint Judith Collins as our new leader and we are all united behind her.

For me personally, having already decided and announced last year that it was time to leave politics, I was then asked to stay and lead the Covid-19 recovery policy work which I was honoured to do. With the recent

changes and what would have been a different role for me, it makes sense for me to step aside as I had previously intended in the knowledge that the new line-up has an amazing depth of talent and experience.

Meanwhile the Government is trying to continue to focus the narrative on the health risks of Covid-19 rather than on how to manage the biggest economic and jobs crisis in thirty years.

The NZIER’s (New Zealand Institute of Economic Research) most recent quarterly survey of business opinion showed a collapse in business confidence to levels not seen since the worst of the Global Financial Crisis with business activity at its lowest level since 2009.

Critically, the survey found more than a third of businesses are expecting to lay off staff between now and the end of September.

At the same time many businesses and commercial landlords are in a completely unacceptable legal limbo awaiting direction from the Government.

New tenancy rules for commercial leases announced

by Andrew Little on June 4th were meant to take effect that day with the Government intending to pass legislation and have the new rules apply retrospectively. However, that legislation failed after New Zealand First declined to support it. Now there are only three weeks left before Parliament adjourns on August 6th in which to pass legislation.

This is gross incompetence given the Government has been promising rent relief since the start of lockdown in March. The Government needs to come out with clear proposals, or just be honest and admit that they’re going to do nothing to deal with this situation so that everybody can move on.

Our communities need a Government that that can deliver strong economic policies to help our businesses get back on their feet.

A delegation from the Darfield Ukulele group (‘The DUG’s’) travelled to Geraldine over the weekend to attend the eighth annual Geraldine Ukulele Festival. At the last minute the Covid-19 restrictions eased to enable a scaled-down, local version of the Festival to go ahead - humorously renamed ‘Not the Geraldine Ukulele Festival 2020’.

“Despite the uncertainty, it was well attended by ukulele groups from all over New Zealand,” commented member of the Group, Pam Aldersley.

Aldersley There were plenty of concerts, workshops, open mic sessions and ‘The Big Strum’, where all attendees got together to play and sing-along in a mass ukulele orchestra. The Darfield Ukulele group performed an hour-long afternoon concert at Mundell's Café on Saturday, July 18th, with Café patrons enjoying the music and singing along as they ate their lunch.

“It was a great weekend, and planning for the 2021 Geraldine Ukulele Festival is already underway,” Pam added.

The Malvern Foodbank, Two Rivers Community Trust, has been busy since lockdown with a large increase in demand.

The Foodbank is run by local volunteers and co-ordinated by Rose Craven; Craven the Malvern Hub also works alongside Rose to make sure the needs of the community are met.

“We went from twelve parcels to 120 parcels a month, for local people, since lockdown,” Rose explained, “and we are in preparation for more when the current wage subsidy runs out. There are quite a few families who are finding it tough right now, especially with the cost of electricity during these winter months,” she added. “We have also been collecting and distributing good bedding, heating and clothing to help keep them warm,” Rose said.

The Foodbank runs entirely through donations and small funding grants so was grateful for the support it received recently from two companies -

Fonterra and MTF Finance.

“In a wonderful act of kindness and generosity, local Fonterra staff, rallied around to donate a whole vehicle load of goods for the Foodbank, including boxes of hand sanitiser,” a Malvern Hub spokesperson reported.

“They also held a cake fundraiser to help the families of Malvern, with the monies raised then matched dollar for dollar by Fonterra, Darfield before being donated towards helping keep families warm.”

MTF finance also came to the party, by donating a Ute load of cans to the Foodbank as part of a recent initiative they’d undertaken supporting local Canterbury foodbanks.

“We are so grateful for the

support that we get for our Foodbank, and want to acknowledge all the generosity of the staff at Fonterra and MTF,” the spokesperson said.

“We are expecting an ongoing need for resources from the community so donations like these are always very much appreciated. We now have plenty of canned food, but are always short of meat and basics like tea, coffee, sugar and dry ingredients,” they added. “We also have families that are struggling to keep warm, so any donations would be gratefully appreciated at the moment,” they concluded.

To the Editors: In the wake of the recent Selwyn District Council’s call for the fielding of ideas and suggestions for Darfield: What about effective Darfield signage at the main entranceways to the township which could be admired and not forgotten?

Currently the Darfield signage could only be described as low profile, nondescript, misplaced and certainly doesn’t make any impression for the showcasing of Darfield.

We need something that is colourful, visible and creatively pleasing; that at the same time references aspects of Darfield’s past, present and future. I am sure artists from around the area would be able to create something that really reflects what Darfield is all about.

Right now, we have a blank canvas and the opportunity to create memorable signs which would truly represent Darfield.

Suggested home security advice: • Always leave your house locked when absent from your address.

• Spare key for house, hidden in a well secure and non-obvious place (definitely not under the door plant pot, floor mat, or gumboot).

• When away from your address, and at night-time, have your front section gate shut and locked securely.

• Vehicles should be locked and secured in a garage overnight on your property.

• Remove all valuables (lap tops, cameras, chainsaws, tools etc) from your vehicles when left overnight, or unattended.

• If a lockable garage is not available, the vehicle should be locked, ignition key removed and secured up your driveway

with section gate locked.

Consider fitting an alarm system to your vehicle and, especially with 4 wheel drives, a GPS tracking device.

• Where possible do not leave your vehicle parked on the street side overnight.

• Have an alarm home security system and CCTV security cameras fitted to your home and farm buildings.

• If away from your address for a period of time consider having a reliable, and known, person to act as a house sitter, or have a neighbour check your property in your absence.

• Fit sensor activated spotlights on your house and outbuildings.

• Consider engraving your tools and valuable possessions with your driver’s licence number for identification purposes, should they be stolen. The Malvern Community Patrol have engravers which can be borrowed from them for a gold coin donation to the Patrol.

• The Malvern Community Patrol can also fit and install secure screws to your vehicle number plates, so that the number plate cannot be removed. They can do this for a cost of $5 per vehicle. Again make contact with a member of the Malvern Community Patrol in relation to this.

• Keep a computer photo and serial number inventory of all tools, computers, cameras and valuables which have engraved or attached serial numbers for identification purposes should they be stolen.

• Engage a reputable security company to give you advice and quotes for the installation of home security alarm and CCTV camera systems.

Please take this advice seriously and implement some measures to improve your home, vehicle and farm security which will hugely decrease the risk of becoming a Victim of Crime.

Saturday July 18th; this date had been circled since the updated Ellesmere draw came out - post covid lockdown. Not only because it was the first of five tough games leading into the Coleman shield playoffs, but also due to having three of our locks away at a family wedding.

However the planning that had gone on leading into this game made that fact barely noticeable.

Lincoln at Lincoln is always a tough prospect, as many teams can attest to. The weather during the week leading into the game meant that conditions underfoot were not conducive to running rugby. To use racing parlance, the field would be classified as heavy.

Once the game started though you could be forgiven for thinking that it was dry weather footy. The Ducks had come down to play and play they certainly did. Pretty much straight off the starting kickoff the level of intensity was set for the game. A bustling break by Geoff Cridge quickly had the Ducks in Lincoln’s red zone, swift ruck ball followed which led to hooker Drew Beckley diving over in the left hand corner to open the scoring.

A good solid set phase by the forwards ten metres out from Lincoln’s line enabled the backs to run a good strike move with Sheldon Reed under the posts untouched, fifteen nil, after fifteen minutes. Lance Miekle crossed the line after the half hour mark to have the Ducks heading into the break at 22 nil up.

Alister crossed for a try shortly after the resumption of play to add a further seven points to his tally for the day. Haigh Jebson then produced a stunning solo run to cross for the first of his two tries, to have the Ducks up 36 nil after barely fifty minutes. Lincoln then managed to claw back with a try on the three quarter mark. Defence was really what won the game though with numerous Lincoln ball carriers ending up ten or twenty metres back from where they first got tackled. The entire Darfield forward pack putting on bone jarring hit after hit. MVP Geoff Cridge three points, Haigh Jebson two and Blair McIlroy one, leading the charge. Alister Collins finishing with a twenty point haul for the match. A mention also to Roy McCaughan who made his Ducks Div1 debut as well, playing with high intensity in the loose.

Congratulations must go out to Lincoln’s Jason Pietzner who played in his 300th Div 1 game for Lincoln, a tremendous achievement for him.

Thanks also to the loyal Ducks supporters who turned out again, in less than ideal conditions, to cheer on the boys.
