Local boy SonnySonny-Bill McAndrew got to fulfil a dream when he won a place in the ‘Live Like A Crusader’ promotion. The ’Live Like A Crusader’ competition is run by radio station More FM and invites hopeful winners to text through their details to be in with a chance. Sonny-Bill’s parents, Jodie and Pete have had a go at winning this competition for around five years, so were rapt to have been successful on this occasion. To have a shot at winning, hopeful entrants text their names and numbers through to More FM and from there the eventual winner is drawn. For Sonny-Bill it was truly a dream come true and very, very exciting. “The prize pack included a Crusaders’ kit, being able to attend the Captain’s run on the Friday before game day, meeting and greeting the boys and getting to look around the stadium/changing rooms etc,” Jodie explained.

The Anglican Parish Hall was never empty of shoppers from the time the doors opened on Saturday until they finally closed on Tuesday. “The bulk of the sales took place over the seven hours we were open on Saturday (July 11th) and the four hours on Sunday afternoon (July 12th),” Reverend Susan Baldwin explained. “Thank you to everyone who came out to the Malvern Parish’s annual Book Fair, we estimate that over 1750 books and more than 300 jigsaw puzzles were sold over the four days, along with countless DVDs and CDs,” she added. “Most satisfying to the volunteers and organisers was hearing such comments as, ‘this is the highlight of my winter. I look forward to this every year’ (said by a woman leaving with two large bags of books for her and her children).” An incredibly diverse selection of books are donated to the Fair each year, with fiction being the largest section by far; taking up several table tops and filling countless banana boxes. Non-fiction takes up the other two-thirds of the space with books on history, biographies, gardening, hobbies, travel,

This is a chance to connect and build confidence in our community, in Selwyn and all across New Zealand.” Reuben was born and bred in Canterbury and comments he is

Jacky Lawson, Lawson one of the organisers, observed, "we may have benefitted from the results of lock-down too. People who were not working during lock-down either had the time to sort and tidy their book shelves, or they spent their time reading and doing puzzles and came to the Book Fair to stock up again!" “Many thanks to our local communities for supporting the Book Fair again this year,” Susan concluded.

Exhibitor Registration is now underway for New Zealand’s longest running and biggest demonstrative Field Days and the South Island’s biggest. Organisers look forward to welcoming exhibitors back to their Kirwee site in March 2021. South Island Field Days is a non -profit organisation, with all surplus monies going back into developing the site and running the event, or are given away as community donations, or

scholarships. They are one of the few Field Days to allocate sites based on industry; making it easy for visitors to find and compare products. They are also committed to the development of their volunteer members. While 2020 has dealt some challenges, commented The South Island Agricultural Field Days Organising Committee, it has undoubtedly been the agricultural industry that has

been the lifeblood of the Nation. “We hope that the 2021 South Island Agricultural Field Days will bring together all those involved in agriculture and the wider industry and act as a celebration of the achievements made.” For those registering to attend as exhibitors organisers advise that if they are required to cancel the event, full payment will be returned.

The West Melton Scouts’ group has been a feature of the West Melton community for many a long year and now would value some further input and support from the community in the form of leaders and committee. Children from five to eighteen have availed themselves of the fun and learning available through a National Scouting programme. Currently West Melton Scouts offer Keas (ages 5 to 8), Cubs (ages 8 to 11) and Scouts (ages 11 to 14) and they all enjoy the fabulous new facilities at the West Melton Community Centre. This year the West Melton group sent several youths to Jamboree, “they had a blast, particularly on the water rapids trip and the zip line,”

reported a West Melton Scouts’ spokesperson. One person attended the 54th Walsh Memorial Flying School, while yet more attended overnight camps, tramps, bridge-building activities, mudslide and forest bikeriding evenings. West Melton Scouts assist with numerous fundraising activities for youth members, giving them the opportunity to earn funds to attend events. Upcoming events on the calendar include: Pinewood Derby and Staveley Adventure Weekend. Their next term begins on Monday, July 20th with a Campfire Night and shared supper; all are welcome to the bring-a-plate event. “We are looking for new

members for our committee and new leaders to support our current leaders, as well as a new Group Leader,” the West Melton Scouts’ spokesperson explained. “If you’re looking for a new challenge and have a few hours to spare each week, we’d love to hear from you. Working with Scouts NZ is a rewarding experience, could be a great inclusion on your CV, or something to keep you motivated after retirement. Each term local dance school TM Dance World names their Dancer of the Term. Term two saw Brianna Riddle, Riddle aged 10 named as outstanding dancer for the Studio. Brianna has been dancing at TM Dance World (TMDW) now for four years. “Brianna is enrolled as an Elite Student in our Junior school programme,” said Director of TM Dance World, Tara McKeown. McKeown “On a weekly schedule Brianna takes lessons in Jazz, Ballet, Contemporary, Acrobatics, Hip Hop, Tap and Performance work. She is also currently working towards sitting her annual dance exams, which will be held at the end of term three. Brianna will be examined in Elementary 1 Jazz, Level 3 Contemporary and Hip Hop. While she is working towards Level 4 Acrobatics, the exams have been cancelled this year due to changes with Covid-19,”

Tara explained. “On top of this Brianna also attends the Malvern Ballet School where she will sit her Grade 4 Royal Academy of Dance Classical exam in term 4,” she added. “The competition season is finally about to start,” Tara reported. “Brianna has two solos, a duo and several teams entries that will be entered into competitions,” she explained. “In the term three holidays the TMDW Performance School will travel to Blenheim again to compete. After we return home we will then attend the New Zealand Dance Awards held in Christchurch,” Tara said. “Throughout the year all Brianna's teachers have noticed a fantastic focus in classes. She is a very hard working student and we have been enjoying watching her technique and confidence grow. Brianna is talented in all genres of dance

and we are looking forward to seeing where dance will take her,” Tara added proudly. “Brianna is one of four Dancers who will be selected throughout the year for our Dancer of the Term and she will now be also in the running to win the 2020 Dancer of the Year! The first week on July 6th saw around fifty people enjoying the event and most took home prizes and/or raffle wins. On Wednesday, July 8th a group of four year olds from Darfield Preschool and Nursery went for a walk to the Darfield Library for a morning of Kidsfest Dinosaur fun. “When we arrived, we were excited to see some other Preschool friends who had also come along to the Dinosaur part,” commented Darfield Preschool and Nursery, Centre Administrator, Louise Hardham. Hardham “Tamariki were treated to some Dinosaur songs and stories and then it was off on a Dinosaur hunt around the Library to find those that had been hidden. The children were given photos of the hidden Dinosaurs to help them in their quest,” she explained. “They did a wonderful job of working together to find each Dinosaur, some of whom proved rather tricky to find,” she added. “While some tamariki went on a Dinosaur hunt, others looked for Dinosaur fossils in sand or got creative making Dinosaur masks,” Louise said. “Some of the children also found a number of Dinosaur books which they quietly sat and read before we headed back to Preschool. It was a wonderful experience for the tamariki allowing them to make connecting links between the community and Preschool as they learned about the wider world around them. A big thank you to Nikki and the Library team for making this event possible,” she said. Also on July 2nd Darfield Preschool held their annual four year old sleepover. “This is probably the most lookedforward to event of our year, by both children and teachers!” Louise commented. “Lots of games, toasting marshmallows on our campfire and bedtime stories made this a fun-filled experience for all,” she added. “School holidays at Darfield Preschool have been filled with teddy-bears’ picnics, a wheels’ day, an adventure to the plantation and other fun activities for our tamariki to explore and experience,” Louise concluded.

The Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade are not only extremely proud of their Station and the equipment within it, but now they have another reason to be pleased with themselves. After ma ny month s of fundraising, and numerous gratefully received donations, the Brigade have just purchased an additional vehicle to aid in the performance of their duties. They have an Open Day planned at the Station to allow the community the opportunity of seeing not only the new vehicle and the fire engine, but also the facility they work hard to maintain. “Our Brigade members try to be independent and raise all the funds needed for equipment that we believe will be beneficial to the community,” Sheffield Fire Chief Nev Croy explained. While it is generally the Brigade assisting the public; this time it has worked in reverse and members of the public have helped them. “After many years of running fundraising events, and with support from some local residents within our Fire District, we have been able to purchase our smoke chaser,” Nev said. “The vehicle is a 2020 Mitsubishi Triton 4x4 twin cab utility and while it is not a fire appliance it will have some

firefighting capability as we have purchased, and fitted, a 300litre spray unit to it,” he added. “This will enable us to get to fires where it is not practicable to take a large fire engine ie: river beds, muddy farm tracks, snow etc. It will also enable us to respond more rapidly to nonfire related calls; medicals, motor vehicle accidents etc, where time is a vital factor,” he reported. “We are also fortunate to have been supplied with nineteen new helmet torches which were donated by a local farming couple - a gesture much appreciated by the Brigade,” Nev added. “We would like thank and acknowledge all who have contributed to the purchase of our smoke chaser and the helmet torches and are humbled by the generosity of people in these trying times. When something like this happens, words don’t seem an adequate

enough way of saying thank you,” he commented. “Thanks to the local and wider community our fundraising over the years has enabled us to equip the Station to a level we couldn’t have done otherwise. We have managed to purchase: pagers*, lighting plant*, generator*, defibrillator* and a small water pump. The defibrillator has now been donated to the community and is located at the World Famous Sheffield Pie Shop. We have also funded hand held radios with a base set, donated money to a local sport’s club, built a winter training room, plus extra vehicle shed and bought a Chrysler Voyager people mover. Now we also have a new Mitsubishi Triton 4x4 automatic ute with a 300 litre water tank and pump,” Nev concluded proudly. *FENZ now supply these items.

Coming up at the end of July will be the innovative Selwyn Sports’ Trust development programme. The Programme is aimed at nurturing students who are passionate about sport. It applies a holistic approach to provide self-motivated students with additional knowledge and skills to improve their performance, on and off the field. The Programme also intends to broaden their understanding of the opportunities that exist within sport. The Selwyn Sports Trust believes in providing aspiring Selwyn athletes with various opportunities to extend their knowledge and enhance their personal development within sport. Building a leading development programme means

ensuring students have the best possible opportunity to reach their goals, whether that be as an athlete, coach, sports’ scientist, official, etc! For that to occur, students need enjoyable, quality development experiences in their early years, to build their belief and ignite their passion and enjoyment for sport in a well-balanced environment. The Sport Development Programme is unique because it emphasises the importance of holistic development and also caters to students engaged in team, as well as individual sports. The Malvern Community Board is hosting monthly ‘Drop-in’ sessions in communities around Malvern. Last month members visited Hororata where flooding was the major topic. This month the Board visited Darfield for a well-attended and lively discussion on a wide range of topics and issues related to the Darfield township and the wider Darfield area. Council staff were present to give technical answers, or take the questions away for further investigation. Topics ranged from the installation of centre lines on roads, to the condition of the Darfield Campervan dump-station. The Council is working on installing more centre lines on roads, however this is not able to be done where a road is too narrow for two lanes. The campervan dump station access on North Terrace will be repaired, and improved, shortly. Other issues discussed included installation of sewerage in Darfield (still in the discussion stage), town planning, inappropriate planting of trees on roadsides and trees overhanging township footpaths (report these to Snap, Send, Solve on the Council’s website, or by phone), the new bylaw being worked on by Council to control street markets and roadside stalls, the condition of the shingle length of Ward’s Road (Council staff will inspect) and the consent applications for two new subdivisions to the north of Darfield (now open for submission).
