During the recent Covid-19 Lockdown, the Malvern Lions’ C l u b , l i k e m a n y ot h e r organisations, had to curtail its activities, with ongoing administration being carried out by key office holders from their homes.

On Wednesday evening, June 24th, Club members and their partners, were finally able to meet at the Coalgate Tavern for the Club's annual Changeover Night. The event was held to celebrate the accomplishments of the 2019-2020 year, and to prepare hopefully for a more stable programme over the next twelve months. An excellent meal served by the Tavern, and a large turnout helped make for a most enjoyable post-Covid meeting. It was especially good to have Lion Colin Stott in attendance, as Colin played a prominent role in the founding of the club in September 1971.

In his annual report, outgoing President Neale Todd expressed his gratitude at having had the opportunity to serve as the Club's 48th President. He

informed us that he had enjoyed the experience immensely.

Neale also thanked the Club's Board, our members and partners for their strong support, and made special mention of his wonderful wife Jennifer, Jennifer for her special assistance and also for her hostessing duties following each monthly Board Meeting.

Incoming President Gavin King then presented Jennifer with a lovely floral gift in recognition of her fine work in assisting Neale and the Club.

After the formal speeches, President Neale presented special awards to four members, in recognition of their outstanding service to the club.

Lions Trevor Taege and Brian Redfern each received Lions' premier award, that of Life Membership of Lions Clubs International. Both members had joined the club in 1983, and to date they have both contributed 37 years' service.

He has been the Club's long time liaison officer for the Coast to Coast event, another project which has raised valuable income over many years for the Club.

Brian Hunt, Hunt who was awarded the Ramsay Gibson Award for outstanding services to the Club. Brian who joined the Club in 2003, has been the Club's catering convenor in recent years. Catering remains a major source of the Club's fundraising and it, along with other key projects, enable the Board to disburse a significant amount of money back to the community each year. This enables several individuals, community groups and charitable organisations to achieve some of their special goals, hopes and aspirations as a result.

During the evening, Alister Murray, Murray a former President, carried out the induction of the Club's new Board for 2020-2021. The team for the coming year will be led by Gavin King as President, and comprises a further fourteen members all of whom possess a range of valuable skills

Brian served as President in 1998-1999 and has also been the Club's Secretary for two periods, from 1988-1991 and 2014-2017. He has been a tireless worker on a range of projects for many years, especially Pea Straw, which is a very valuable revenue earner for the Club. He has also given freely of his advice and support to his fellow members over many years, especially new Secretaries and newcomers to the Club.

Trevor served as President of the Club in 1994-1995 and has been the Club's Lion Tamer, a key administrative position, since 2003. Trevor and his wife Heather have also, for many years, provided outstanding assistance to Camp Quality, a charity for children suffering from cancer.

They have often invited the children and their adult assistants, (while in attendance at their annual Living Springs holiday camps), to visit the Taege property at Kowai Bush for special fun days, and sometimes for overnight camp overs.

Matariki celebrations in Malvern this year look a little bit different - but guaranteed to be still very exciting!

“As with many events this year, our third annual Matariki in Malvern Festival (originally scheduled for June 26th) had to be cancelled due to Covid-19,” explained Kelly Maude, Maude Events Co-ordinator for the Two Rivers Community Trust. “But, not wanting to lose the focus of celebrating Matariki in our community, the Trust have been working on an exciting collaborative kite making project with Selwyn District Council, Lincoln Envirotown, Darfield High School international students and Glentunnel School.”

Kites are used in many cultures around the world to celebrate different things and Māori have made kites for many generations to fly at Matariki.

“This year, we have chosen to focus on making and flying kites (manu tukutuku) and have embraced the multicultural love of them,” Kelly added.

International students at Darfield High School have worked with Lincoln Envirotown to create a video with

instructions on how to make a kite out of bamboo canes and repurposed plastic bags. These students hail from Japan, Thailand and Germany and it’s reported they have enjoyed contributing to this project for the community.

Glentunnel School students worked with Two Rivers Community Trust, and made two versions of a Māori manu taratahi (a triangular shaped kite), one made of Harakeke (flax) and Toetoe, and another version made out of paper. The kites were made by Year 2 and 3 students, with narration from students in Years 3-6.

“Two Rivers Community Trust have plenty of A2 newsprint paper and some feathers available at Darfield Library,” Kelly said. “You can either go to the Library to make your kite, or collect what you need to make one at home.”

“There are prizes available for photos of the best decorated kites, and of your whānau and friends flying them,” Kelly added. “On Sunday, July 19th, weather permitting, please join us at Darfield Domain to fly your kite, we’d love to see you and your amazing kites!”

Re: Russell Williams - electrician. electrician Recently whilst looking for a document in our family archives I came across my late father’s job sheets for electrical work carried out on the Kirwee Hotel.

I believe the underwriter would have looked for evidence that recent electrical work was compliant and whether it may have contributed to the fire on Christmas Eve, which resulted in the loss of this building.

The job sheets I discovered related to a quote provided to Blamires and Dale, Dale Darfield based builders, who supplied renovation costs to the publican in May 1967.

My father’s offer to install some thirty lights and twenty five plug sockets, as well as various other service connections amounted to £283/10/0 (Two hundred and eighty three pounds and ten shillings).

The work was subsequently carried out and invoiced in August 1967 for $634 dollars.

This included a number of

My father Russell’s long association with the fire brigade, earning him a Queen’s Service Medal (QSM) for service to the volunteer fire brigades, would have led him to be especially saddened to see the Pub’s loss to fire. This after withstanding winds, earthquakes and the actions of revellers over so many years.

Like my old man, I along with many locals have enjoyed, the hospitality, many jugs and yarns at the bar of the Kirwee Pub. Now that the sad sight of this damaged building is cleared from our roadside, the fond memories of the fun times should live on.

The new Trusts’ Act 2019 will come into force from January, 30th 2021. The long transition period before the Act comes into force is to enable trustees to ensure their trust is compliant with the new rules and that any changes to the trust deed, or other necessary arrangements, can be implemented.

The new Act contains both mandatory and default trustee duties. The mandatory duties cannot be excluded, or modified, by the trust deed and are imposed on all trustees. We encourage you to contact us to learn more about these duties.

A significant change is the mandatory disclosure regime.

Under the disclosure regime, beneficiaries must be told that they are a beneficiary of a trust, the name and contact details of the trustees, when the trustees are appointed, removed or retired, and that they can ask for a copy of the Trust Deed or trust information.

It is prudent to consider if you are willing to undertake these

increased compliance and disclosure obligations and if you are comfortable with these new rules. You should review your commitment to having a trust in light of the increased time and costs that will be required to manage the trust under the new Act. It is also pragmatic to consider whether your assets can be better protected using other mechanisms, either by executing a relationship property agreement under the Property (Relationships) Act 1976, drafting a robust will, or by having adequate insurance.

Ultimately, it is important that you consider whether the earlier circumstances for establishing the trust are still relevant today.

Calling Fellow Road Users Let’s talk tyres. Winter driving conditions are difficult at the best of times, but if you have worn, bald tyres it’s just treacherous. At Darfield Automotive we undertake WOF checks under contract to NZTA and the legal minimum for tyre tread depth is 1.5mm. But we know from experience that once a tyre gets to this level it loses almost all its performance. In fact in wet conditions, at 1.5mm of tread the vehicle takes twice the stopping distance than if it had had new tyres fitted.

The MTA is currently running a campaign to inform road users about the dangers of

running worn tyres. They are encouraging vehicle users to check their tyres every few months and are asking road users to consider changing their tyres at around 3mm.

Tyres are not just round black things holding up your car. I firmly believe that tyres should be fitted to people and their driving style, as much as they are physically fitted to your car.

If you are doing long straight running then you want a different tyre to someone who drives a lot on shingle roads, or someone who drives around hills. Take your time when choosing new tyres; the wrong We now have our own

The Thompson family are a local equestrian family based at Kirwee. Four daughters who ride, Chris, Chris George, George Maddi and Gus, Gus plus their parents Andy and Lisa who ride as well. Their family home and their equestrian business is accommodated on fifty acres locally.

The Thompsons are heavily involved with all aspects of the equestrian world and have had many successes over the years, both in New Zealand and overseas. Andy also creates sculptures from old, used horse shoes. This pursuit began as part of his recovery after a leg had to be amputated following an accident falling from a ladder and the progression of cellulitis.

The Thompsons are currently getting back into running their extremely popular horse camps.

Camps that see many children returning time after time for lots of fun and learning.

WE SPECIALISE IN: Kowhai Residential School of Riding began in 1969 with four acres of land and five ponies.

Today the School has eighty horses/ponies and operates on three hundred and fifty acres of land! Kowhai has been operated by the same family since its inception, with the venture started by Liz Thomas and her late husband, Bruce.

Bruce Now with involvement from her son Chris and his wife Becci Thomas they all make Kowhai the success it is. For many of their regular riders it’s a second home and family, where life long memories and friendships are made. The Thomas family have an extensive equestrian background, along with years of knowledge and experience to share with the riders that attend Kowhai.

The next generation of competitive riders from the Thomas family are coming through now with Charlotte competing in many equestrian disciplines successfully and her younger brother Daniel also enjoying competing in the equestrian world as well.

“Riders have come from all over

the world to ride at Kowhai,” one of the Kowhai directors, Chris Thomas explained. “But the School really exists for local riders who want to spend their time riding and enjoying horses,” he added. “Up to twenty seven young people at a time come for an action packed weekend, or school holiday course,” Chris explained. “We usually run one group of beginners and two or three groups who are more experienced,” he said.

Many children return to Kowhai again and again, joining the local branch of the Pony Club, where they can sit certificates and take part in competitions all over Canterbury, or further afield.

Mornings at Kowhai are generally spent in a lesson tailored to the group’s experience. More experienced riders may be learning to ride dressage, be coached in show jumping, or cross country.

The School has two all weather arenas and a show Jumping area, as well as several extensive cross-country courses. After lunch most groups will go for a trek either on the farm attached to the School, or on one of the many neighbouring farms.

Kowhai really is a place where dreams are made.

She has had numerous wins with her horses, Dustin Bromac (eight successes), Chanelle Bromac (seven) and her current racehorse Pink Flamingo Run who has won one race so far.

Chanelle also breaks in to saddle Standardbreds, retired from racing, before rehoming them, thus giving them another chance at life. She was extremely successful with her horse Bronze Jay, a multiple champion, who also took out the prestigious Horse of the Year title, for Ridden Standardbred.

Four years ago Chanelle made the switch to barrel racing and it’s something she thoroughly enjoys. She has twice been named as runner up NZ Rookie of the Year and this year also finished sixth overall in New Zealand.

Selwyn Equestrian is a boutique grazing and agistment facility, fully equipped for the riding needs of its clients. The property contains a large enclosed indoor arena (30m x 70m) with a professional silica surface and spectator viewing gallery, plus flood lighting and sound system.

There is also an outdoor 30m x 70m dressage arena, plus a 70m x 70m show jumping arena, with a ten jump course set-up. These arenas cater for riders of all ability and in all weather situations.

All facilities are open to the public for hire privately, or for group bookings. It’s an amazing venue to rent for clinics, and is frequently used

by top level national and international coaches. Onsite are full conference facilities, also available for hire, plus stables and yards.

For those that don’t have a pony, but would love to learn to ride, there are riding lessons available on ‘Cuba’, or alternatively riders can bring their own pony for lessons.

Touted as the post-Covid community come-back in a kilt; the Hororata Highland Games will again be staged in 2020, it was announced this week.

Ten years ago, a resilient community came up with an idea to raise spirits (including the odd dram) after the devastating Canterbury earthquakes and the Hororata Highland Games were born.

Now, they’re meeting a new, post-Covid challenge with confirmation that the Games, and tenth birthday celebrations will take place on Saturday, November 7th 2020 at the Hororata Domain.

The Games also have a new theme: ‘A Scottish festival with a Kiwi twist’ (think stubbies meet sporrans).

T he H or or at a H ig h l an d Games attract 10,000 people each year, and see 500 competitors in various Scottish events, including caber tossing, highland dancing and pipe band competitions. All surrounded by a rich tapestry of culture and tastings. 220 volunteers join Clan Hororata to make these much loved and now iconic

Cindy Driscoll, Driscoll Executive Officer Hororata Community Trust commented that this will be an important festival, not just for Hororata, but for all of Canterbury.

“Our community loves welcoming people from all over New Zealand to the Hororata Highland Games and we can’t wait to celebrate its tenth birthday.

“Organising one of the first major events to be confirmed for the region, hasn’t been easy,” Cindy explained.

“Planning an event with constantly changing Covid levels and guidelines is a challenge, but our community has never backed away from a challenge.

A decade ago, we designed the Hororata Highland Games to help our community recover following the Canterbury Earthquakes. Now ten years on the Hororata Highland Games will once again be a shining light as we overcome the trials of Covid-19,” she said.

“Here we have a centuries-old concept, which takes place all over the world, and made it our

own. We honour the traditions of Highland Games, but we have our own unique twist which comes from our community and a strong sense of purpose,” Cindy reported.

“The overwhelming support of our sponsors and suppliers is what has given the Hororata Community Trust the confidence to move ahead with planning the Games this year. They have been amazing and understand how much events like this contribute to the wellbeing of communities. There is a real feeling from every aspect of, ‘we will do what it takes’ to make the tenth Hororata Highland Games a success in 2020.”

In planning the event this year, the Trust recognises it will need to be flexible and adaptable.

“We are working with our ticketing provider, Eventfinda and with the New Zealand Event Association to follow the Covid-19 best practice code. Everything people love about the Games will be there, but we will be making certain it is safety first,” Cindy concluded.

Last weekend’s game saw Darfield head down the highway to meet Hornby at Denton Oval.

The conditions that met us there were more suitable to ‘actual ducks’ than the ‘Ducks’ rugby side. Due to an unfortunate injury sustained by a Hornby player during the Div3 game, the second half of their game, plus the Div1 fixture were held on the outer fields at Denton Park.

Thankfully the Hornby player will be ok, Hornby holding

on to win 14-7.

In damp conditions and on a muddy track the first half was a fairly dour affair, with Hornby taking the lead after two minutes with a penalty goal. Alister Collins slotted one for the Ducks after nine minutes to bring things back to level terms.

The Malvern Community Board held its first post-COVID meeting in person, on Monday, June 22nd in the Darfield Library meeting rooms.

The Board discussed at length its drop-in sessions around the Ward and agreed it would continue to be a very valuable way to reach out to the community. The Board also agreed to hold its monthly meetings in Darfield for the remainder of the year and instead use these drop-in sessions to explore activities and issues within the area visited. Session locations and times will be advertised and your attendance at your local session will be welcomed.

In their monthly agenda reports members highlighted topical issues from recent community committee meetings. The Board also had an opportunity view the draft design for the Japanese Garden to be developed in Tussock Square, Darfield. The draft will now go to the Mayor and councillors of Yubetsu for input and comments. Yubetsu in Hokkaido is the Board’s sister city.

In his report the Chief Executive referred to the Westview Special Fund, the Draft Annual Plan rates outcome and also the outcome of the recently held meeting between the community and NZTA to address winter traffic issues which took place at Castle Hill and has resulted in the loosening of some of the travel restrictions.

A successful and well-attended drop-in session was held at Hororata in early June with the major topic discussed being river control and flooding issues.

The Board plans to have another community dropdrop-in session on July 13th from 3pm - 5:30pm, in Darfield. This will be advertised closer to the time in various locations including community Facebook pages and school newsletters. Anyone is welcome to come and talk to the Board and staff about concerns, suggestions and ideas.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the Community Board meetings and to talk to the Board about any issues in their community. Please contact the Board secretary therese.davel@selwyn.govt.nz to make an appointment if you wish to speak. An agenda can be found on the Council website on the Thursday before the meeting.

The second half was a different story however. The conditions worsened, but Darfield’s decision -making improved. Ill discipline having cost Hornby, playing three quarters of the second half with only fourteen men, with three players being yellow carded at various times. Darfield was also not immune with Lance Meikle spending time in the ‘under the posts’, as well.

Will Wright broke his try-scoringcurse after a good maul saw him dive over for a try, closely followed by second tries to Michael and Ben. These were followed up with a try to captain Richard Catherwood nearly on full time, which saw the Ducks cruise to a convincing 53-3 point win.

Some positives from the game was the set piece, both scrum and lineout functioning well and 1st 5 Sean Carston leading the team around the pitch in a MVP performance.

This coming weekend sees all three senior teams at the Duckpond, with Div1 and Div3 taking on Rolleston and Div2 taking on their second Peninsula -based side in consecutive weeks with BP. Well done to them as well, having travelled to Diamond Harbour and returned home with the points after an 11 -5 victory, in what is a difficult place to get a win!
