“It was heaps of fun making Hororata's entry to TV One’s Seven Sharp’s 'Talk Up Your Town Competition',” reported Cindy Driscoll, Driscoll Executive Officer, Hororata Community Trust. The point of the competition was to tell New Zealanders all about local towns nationwide and why they should visit them. “Bruce and Cam from Rolleston’s Madkiwis Marketing, offered to film the video for us which was fantastic,” Cindy explained, “but we only had 48 hours to plan, film and edit

the video in order to meet the competition deadline. Everyone jumped on board really quickly and our four presenters from Hororata Primary School, Samara, Samara Hunter, Hunter Sam and Leithan were stars,” she added. “They had to learn lines on the spot, talk directly to the camera and we didn't have time to keep reshooting scenes,” Cindy said. “They really did amazingly well and the video we produced can be seen on the Hororata History abounds and Hororata made the most of their association Facebook page,” she continued. to early founders at the Terrace Station historic homestead.

Te Huanui is celebrating Matariki for the month of July, featuring the creative inspiration and interpretations of the Maori New Year with works by Francine Spencer, Spencer Linda Scott, Scott

Jane McCulla and Kristine Daly in ‘Inspired by Matariki’. The exhibition will open Friday, July 3rd and run until Thursday, July 30th 2020. Francine Spencer is a multimedia artist, well known for her intricate weaving alongside her works combining sculpture and paintings. Francine’s works have been shown internationally at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, through her contributions with Gisborne Disstrict Council. Linda Scott began her raranga journey ten years ago, with her studies leading her to complete her Bachelor of Applied Arts - Toi Poutama

through Whitireia Polytechnic. Linda’s woven pieces include a rapaki - worn around shoulders, kete and kakahu, using harakeke (flax) and muka (flax fibre). Kristine Daly’s works are often in acrylics, but she’s also well known for her work in felted wool. Kristine celebrates Matariki in her work spiritually, surrounded by her children and symbolically, highlighting the harvest festival. Jane McCulla’s works in clay relate to her personal dialogues with her environment. Jane’s experiences in rural or remote landscapes and seascapes have left her fascinated with momentary glimpses in time. Her works often highlight archaeological references, communicating man’s presence and time, the rhythms and routines of life leading her to manipulate earth’s primary material; clay.

The499Project is putting some fun and entertainment back into wintertime and post-lockdown, as they bring ‘Drive in Movies’ to the area. Movies will be shown at the Bangor Estate, Darfield from July 9th to 12th and at the Rangiora A & P Showgrounds from July 2nd to 5th. The499Project was developed during lockdown, after their parent company, entertainment and event based production business NewsCo Event Limited had a blank calendar due to Covid-19. “We saw The499Project events as an opportunity to get our staff involved in something, give us some well needed practice, and hopefully assist ourselves financially with any residual monies after costs,” commented Caitlin Erickson, Erickson Office Administrator for NewsCo Event Limited. “The event industry has been hit hard and we are all struggling. We had hoped to roll this out in level 2 but

On Saturday, June 20th the mighty Darfield Ducks Division 1 rugby team kicked off their season with a huge match against old foes Waihora, played at the fondly named, ‘Duck Pond’. The day was one many had waited for; not only the start of competitive rugby for the 2020 Coleman Shield, but also playing for the Craig Miller Memorial Trophy. The ‘Pond’ was literally standing room only with a huge crowd drawn to the game. “It was not an easy way to ease into rugby after what has been a start/stop season,” reported Div 1 team manager Bodie Hawkins. Hawkins “We really only had two weeks of full contact team training. It was a big game for both teams, with not only Ellesmere points up for grabs, but also the prestigious Craig Miller cup.” Craig was a much loved and respected member of the Darfield Rugby Club and the wider community. “A combination of high emotions and commitment saw the boys take to the field to try and win the game with Craig’s family looking on from the sidelines,” Bodie said. The opening twenty minutes was a good representation of how close this game was going to be. Both teams having sustained periods on attack and defence, with a solitary penalty goal for Darfield and an unconverted try for Waihora by Will Gaulter. Gaulter The score stayed this way until the stroke of halftime when a Geoff Cridge

The second half was more of the same with neither side able to build on possession and hold a comfortable lead. The two sides traded penalty goals for Darfield to lead 11-8 with five minutes left. However Waihora came storming back and after some good, quick, ruck ball, winger Joshua Brown scored in the left hand corner. It was unconverted so Waihora held a 13-11 lead with less than three minutes to play. Darfield managed to get the ball back and some quick play and slick passing enabled a wide ranging Geoff Cridge to slide through a gap and come agonisingly close to scoring. Somehow the ball was lost in the ruck and Waihora managed to maintain possession and close-out the game. A tough 13-11 loss for the Ducks but there were plenty of positives to take out of the game. Unfortunately that also

meant the Craig Miller Memorial Trophy will be spending another summer in Tai Tapu. “Congratulations also to the four Ducks who made their debut, Drew Beckley, Beckley Geoff Cridge, Jed Roessink and Ferg Gunn,” Gunn Bodie said. The Darfield Rugby Football Club sincerely thanks Tim McNae, McNae John Ludemann and the team behind the scenes that enable the Club to have immaculately presented grounds and outstanding facilities that are the envy of many visiting sides. The Club also thank their valued sponsors for their continued support throughout these somewhat trying times. To the large number of spectators who came out and made themselves heard, the team looks forward to seeing them all again this Saturday when the Ducks head into the outskirts of Christchurch to take on Hornby at Denton Oval. “We thank everyone who attended the meeting at Castle Hill Village on Wednesday, June 17th and Selwyn District Mayor Sam Broughton for his facilitation. “To address the concerns raised, we have reviewed our planned management of SH73 for this winter, and we are making changes.” Pete said that the ‘chains essential’ category will be reinstated for winter snow/ice conditions on SH73 when required. “People will continue to be asked to carry and know how to fit vehicle snow chains on SH73, as on other South Island alpine and semi-alpine highways.” The need for chains will be signalled at Springfield and Otira on each side of the passes when there is ice and/or snow on the passes, and other key places on the journey. The three key places where chains are likely to be needed are the Otira viaduct, Porter’s Pass and Craigieburn Cutting. “The priorities for managing the road this winter are to keep people safe and avoid crews n e ed ing t o tow stranded vehicles out of these
