When the rubble is cleared it’s likely to reveal many secrets previously concealed by the generations of publicans and owners who’ve gone before. On Friday, June 12th the final stages of demolition on the historic Kirwee Tavern building took place after the premises were destroyed in a fire on Christmas Eve 2019. Many interested spectators and supporters of the popular Tavern arrived at varying stages of the day to see the end of an era and to relive years of memories. When the rubble was cleared it revealed a secret previously concealed, by the generations

of publicans and owners who’d gone before. There was a second cellar (?) found by the Tavern’s backdoor - off the carpark and under the rooms behind the bar. “It’s approximately 12ft long by 8ft wide and 12ft deep,” Steve Evans, Evans Kirwee Publican reported. “It’s fully lined with concrete on the sides and base and anyone with any knowledge of what this would have been for we’d love to know,” he added “Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Te Huanui is handing over the Gallery space to the community for a week from Friday, June 26th to Thursday, July 2nd for 2020’s community exhibition ‘Splash/Create’ to celebrate Te Huanui’s hometown of Darfield. “We hope that ‘Splash/Create’ will boost our local community’s participation and involvement in Te Huanui Gallery from Friday Sunday, June 26th - 28th, and Wednesday - Thursday, July 1st and 2nd,” said Katrina Ellis, Ellis Malvern Community Arts Council (MCAC) Arts Administrator. Invitations to create art will include: • ‘Paint a Brick’, which will then be sealed and installed in the garden space outside the Gallery • Colouring competitions • The chance to decorate the walls of Te Huanui with anything the creator chooses

• A pottery demonstration by local potter, Peter Cattell. Cattell Throughout the five days of ‘Splash/Create’, the Gallery will be open for the continuous creation of artworks. Finished works will be on display at the Gallery for the duration of the event and can be taken by each participant at the end of the week, with the exception of the bricks. The project will take place within the Gallery, with all materials and workshops supplied at no cost to participants. A colouring competition will be available prior to the beginning of the event, and entries will be displayed throughout the exhibition in the Gallery. Rachael Inch, Inch Selwyn Creative Network organiser, will award prizes in two categories; under 5 years and 5 - 12 years prior to the exhibition opening.

The ‘Paint a Brick’ artworks will be part of a competition with awards in four categories: under 5, 5 -12 years, 13 - 18 years, and Open. Bricks will be painted throughout the ‘Splash/Create’ event and judged by Rachael on completion date. “We are also looking forward to Peter Cattell’s participation in ‘Splash/Create’. The inclusion of two pottery wheels for his workshop will make this a highlight of the event,” Katrina explained. “We would also like to thank Allan Hooper, Hooper another local potter for donating the clay for our pottery workshop,” she concluded. Please note, ‘Splash/Create’ will be adjusted to meet Covid-19 restrictions at the time of the event.

ROLLESTON Those who live in Selwyn, with its beautiful and rugged scenery know it is full of hidden gems that are well worth a visit. However many companies that have previously made a living from tourism, such as our skifields, accommodation providers and hospitality businesses, transport operators, and outdoor guides are currently struggling due to the impact of Covid-19. The NZTA’s recently announced snow closure policy for the alpine passes is likely to make it even more challenging for these important parts of our local economy to thrive. Here in Selwyn 45% of tourism expenditure last year came from locals living in Canterbury. While this reinforces the message to support businesses in your backyard if you can, it also shows there may be opportunities for Selwyn to attract more visitors from other parts of New Zealand. The Selwyn region is fortunate in being less reliant than other parts of New Zealand on

international tourists. In 2019 domestic tourism accounted for 68.2% of tourism expenditure in our region, while the remaining 31.8% came from international tourism. Across New Zealand as a whole, less than 60% of total tourism spending originated from domestic customers, while over 40% came from international tourists. Of course the actual percentage of income that normally comes from local clients versus overseas visitors will vary greatly from business to business. Our tourism businesses will need to be agile in order to survive in the current climate, given the present uncertainty around how long our borders are going to remain closed to international travellers. Some will need to change the services they are offering to attract different visitors and some will need to pivot their marketing to the domestic market. In order to assist our tourism

industry to get back on its feet, National has developed a $100 million grant programme called Tourism Accelerator. The Tourism Accelerator programme would provide direct cash support to businesses and tourist operators to help give them the confidence and ability to reposition their business and keep their doors open and their staff in jobs. Under the programme, tourism businesses would be able to apply for 70% of the funding for projects aimed at driving increased, or new, demand for tourism, such as developing new, or revised, tourism offerings, or marketing to new demographics, or geographical areas. We also need to be thinking creatively about opening up our borders as soon and as safely as possible. In 2019, Australian visitors spent over $8 million in Selwyn, so the re-opening of trans-Tasman travel would give local businesses a real boost. Amy Adams, MP for Selwyn.

Selwyn District Council has signalled it expects to cut its rates increase from an average 3.5% to around 1.6% for the 2020/21 year, starting from July 1st 2020. T h e C o u nc i l c o m p l e t e d deliberations on its draft Annual Plan on Thursday, June 11th and indicated that it had identified net savings of $1.7 million which will be used to reduce the level of the rates increase. The draft Annual Plan, which was developed prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, initially proposed an average rates increase of 3.5%. A revised plan was issued for consultation in April, and the Council asked for community feedback on options for reducing the rates increase. Savings identified during the consultation process include deferring a number of new building projects, streamlining some planning work, and removing township and ward discretionary funds from the coming year’s budgets. Work on refurbishment at the

Council’s Rolleston offices will also be deferred, and catering at Council meetings will be stopped. There will be no increase in staffing numbers this year, other than those required for new facilities currently under construction. There will also be no funding for staff salary increases. Council chief executive David Ward had already confirmed he will take a 15% salary reduction for the coming twelve months. Most requests for unbudgeted new funding in the coming year will not be accommodated at this stage, and several projects will be reconsidered under the Long-Term Plan process next year. The expected 1.6% rates increase is an average across the district, and the actual increase will vary according to different property types and the services provided. The range of increases is expected to vary between 1.4% for urban residential properties (around $1a week) and 3.2% for some larger rural properties. The final rates impacts will not be known

until the rates increase is confirmed by the Council and the rates struck in the new financial year. The Council has also put in place a rates assistance package to help people affected by Covid-19, including an extended rates payment period and reduced penalty fees. The budget and rates proposals will now be finalised, and will be formally considered by the Council for adoption on Wednesday, June 24th.

25 PIAKO DRIVE, DARFIELD Machelle Tewnion is based in Fiji and spends a considerable amount of time in Australia, but before this, grew up in Yaldhurst and attended Darfield High School. Machelle still has family in New Zealand and so tries to get back as often as practicable, as well as spending around two months of each year in India. She has also recently had a children’s book published which has hit the Amazon top seller list. ‘Chitta and the Hidden Magic,’ was fifth overall in children's fiction; Chitta (a monkey) means mind in Sanskrit. “This represents the monkey mind and how it can lead us astray when we don’t know how to use it properly,” Machelle explained. “I was confident with the message I wanted people to discover in the book, but I never thought it would be a top seller,” she added. “Seeing it just four spots below Harry Potter was pretty special as that’s a book I used to love and grew up with,” Machelle said proudly. Machelle has always enjoyed reading, but only started writing regularly about three years ago. “I found a love for it when I was diagnosed with a physical neurological condition and I realised there was more to life than that which meets the eye. It also became a way to express those things which weren’t easy for me to articulate through speaking,” she said. “I loved that you could put emotions into words and play with the way that language can create pictures in our minds, tell a story and ultimately move our reality.”

Machelle came up with her idea for, ‘Chitta and the Hidden Magic’ through wanting to talk about the important things in life and wanting to do that in the most simple way she could. “I wanted people to be able to relate to it and I also wanted to bring about a story that children could enjoy and their parents could ponder,” she said. Ten years working as a registered nurse in the emergency department and numerous visits to India have taught Machelle an awful lot about psychology and holistic health. “I became passionate about finding a way to help people live the best life they could, while

they had the opportunity. How to cultivate happiness within themselves, no matter where they were based, or the situation they found themselves in,” she said. Machelle now runs workshops and is about to start retreats, working one on one with those attending. These focus on holistic health and wellbeing with her writing becoming one of the tools in her personal journey. “All my days are spent writing and planning workshops and I love it,” she commented. Machelle has another Children’s book ready to be published in July, plus an adults’ book in the pipeline which she hopes to release in November.

Held on Saturday, May 23rd Nathan was raising money for Learn Active. He also attracted lots of support from family and friends throughout the entire adventure. Learn Active is a

registered charity that provides outdoor education opportunities to people with intellectual disabilities. “It was a cool crisp day ideal for running/walking up and down Rapaki Track,” commented Nathan’s mum Bridget Carter. Carter “Nathan raised $1,360 for Learn Active,” she added.

“He enjoyed the company of family and friends and completed over 43 kilometres on the day with a lot of energy and enthusiasm,” she commented. “His family are so proud of him, giving back to the community and helping others,” Bridget concluded.

It feels exciting to once again be able to start up the monthly Nourish sessions. The timing feels right, for lockdown gave many of us time in the garden. For some, this is a new experience and skills take time to acquire. This is what Nourish is all about: up-skilling and passing garden knowledge on to those who want to provide food for themselves, families and the greater community. It is with much pleasure we announce the growth of the Nourish programme. We now have a Nourish Springfield, being supported under the Nourish branch of the Two Rivers Community Trust. This will be headed by Tom and Dorothy Innes of Springfield, two highly knowledgeable, passionate and very talented gardeners. This month we are holding the first of two pruning workshops. Nelson Early of Greendale is teaching us the basics of pruning pip fruit trees (apples and pears) for ultimate fruit production and tree health. The first half of the session will involve returning to the Darfield Community Garden in Almond Park on Russell Street which we

pruned last year to see how the trees have grown and reacted to last year’s prune. Next we will move to an established local orchard and prune older trees. Nourish Springfield will be holding a pruning demonstration on July 4th. You can attend one, or both, events free of charge. These are hands -on practical workshops and all are welcome. Bring your secateurs and a sturdy pair of gloves. Notification of postponement due to bad

weather will be on our Facebook page ‘Nourish Community Garden - Darfield’. Come and connect with other gardeners at the Nourish Community Garden on Russell Street on Wednesday 9:30 am (winter hours). Check out the Nourish Community Pantry at the Community garden, a place to give what you can and take what you need. Please bring your own containers for collecting food.

TO BREAK OR NOT TO BREAK The cost of breaking your mortgage fixed rate can differ depending on the following variables. What your current interest is, the term you are fixed for, the loan amount, the term remaining, and the current interest rate; either wholesale or retail. The penalty fee very roughly equates to $1,000 per $100,000 borrowed for every 1% fall in rates, for every year of its remaining fixed-rate term. Generally, you won’t financially benefit - just psychologically! The early repayment fee will offset any benefit in interest payments saved, unless you have the cash to pay the penalty; in that case there are some reasonable savings to be made. However if you have the cash then it may be be er just to pay this amount off the principle. Most banks will not add break fees to the loan amount and if they did, you probably won’t stand to gain in the long term. It is worth doing the exercise, even if it just makes you review your loan to make sure you are managing it the best way. It is always a great idea to review your mortgage regularly and seek advice.

Kidsfest is back again to bring some fun for the holidays after a tough start to the year. Selwyn District Council will be running a busy programme for the popular annual Kidsfest event, from Saturday, July 4th to Sunday July 19th. Events will take place at Council libraries, recreation centres, Selwyn Aquatic Centre and other locations across the district. “KidsFest has been running for 25 years and it was a good feeling to be able to return again and continue to offer a high quality range of events,” said Council Senior Events and Recreation Advisor Dave Tippett. Tippett “We’re delighted that we’re able to put on a host of great events with old favourites and some cool new additions to the fortnight,” he added. “There will be some changes because of the impacts of the pandemic, ongoing restrictions and health and safety requirements. But it’s great to be able to offer children some fun with a return to familiar events, and to take some of the load off parents after the incredible job they have been doing this year.”

The Government, through the Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority (EECA) four year Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme for insulation and heating, had a boost from the recent budget in May. The programme which started in 2018 had a further $56m of funding allocated to it, which means an increase in the subsidies being offered for those that qualify. It will also ensure another 9,000 homes throughout New Zealand can be insulated and/or get efficient heating installed, over the next few years. “It is well known that morerecently constructed houses have had to meet stricter insulation standards and are far warmer and drier than much of the country's older building stock,” said Caroline Shone, Shone Kirwee resident and Chief Executive of Community Energy Action (CEA). “Studies have also shown that living in cold damp homes exacerbated cold related illnesses. New Zealand has a high rate of respiratory disease which prevents people going to work and stops children going to school,” she added. “This is, and has been, a huge financial burden to the Country costing billions of dollars a year,” Caroline stressed. “So particularly now coming into winter and in a time when the country is trying to recover from the impacts of the Covid pandemic, it is more important than ever that our homes are warm and dry. Numerous pieces of research, including CEA’s own, in conjunction with the Canterbury District Health Board, showed that improving homes with

The research also showed a drop in the amount of sick days that adults took off work and children off school,” Caroline stressed. “Right now it’s not expensive to install insulation. In fact with the government’s increase in subsidies, together with CEA’s other funding, CEA can offer those in our community who are eligible, free insulation and up to $3,000 towards the cost of a heating appliance,” Caroline explained. This is definitely fantastic news, and right now the community needs it,” she commented. “If your insulation was installed before 2008 and has not been checked or topped up since, please take action now. If you, or if you know anyone who may qualify, your neighbour, your colleagues, your elderly parents, other parents at school or preschool, let them know and help them get a home that is easier to keep warm. Few people pop their heads through the manhole into the ceiling to

check the level of insulation there. People don’t realise they need it topped up or that their insulation is actually not doing very much for them at all,” Caroline said. “Our kiwi she’ll-be-right-attitude doesn’t help when your home is cold.” To qualify, homeowners need to: Have a home built prior to 2008; Live in the house they own (no rentals); Have a Community Services Card; Live at a qualifying address - there are qualifying addresses in every suburb. Top-ups also qualify. All insulation installed before 2008 is likely to need a top-up. This service applies to ceiling and underfloor insulation only. “CEA is a Canterbury based community trust, who has been working as a service provider for the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme and past programmes like it, for over ten years. CEA itself has been working in Canterbury for over 25 years, helping all the community stay warm, dry and healthy utilising a number of the services it offers,” Caroline concluded.

The Gladfield (on the Hororata, Dunsandel Road) Malting Barley shield was won this year by Alton Brook farm situated between Lakeside and Southbridge and owned by Lyell and Val McMillian, McMillian and was awarded for a line of Tavern Barley. The McMillians run an extensive arable operation of over 680 hectares, growing a wide range of crops from wheat and barley, through to small seeds such as radish, linseed and clover. They also breed and fatten livestock all year round. Farm manager Stu Macauley is assisted by three other full time workers, plus some seasonal staff. The shield is awarded each year to the grower who delivers the best malting barley sample for the Gladfield malting company. The presentation of the shield this year had to be delayed for obvious reasons. However Gladfield owner and operations manager Doug Michael said the barley delivered from Alton Brook for the 2018-19 harvest season stood out from the rest with exceptional test weights, clean bright colour, low nitrogen and good even germination. Another stand out was the size of the line delivered. Alton Brook has consistently delivered good even lines of malting barley despite some trying growing conditions over previous years. The current harvest crop 2019-

20 which is currently being received in the maltings is looking magnificent with about ⅓ of the crop delivered so far. Stuart Watt, Watt Grain trader for PGG Wrightson Grain commented that this year’s harvest was a bumper with very few lines not meeting the quality specifications needed to make quality malt for Gladfield. PGG Wrightson Grain, who work exclusively with Gladfield, managing the barley procurement side of things, are a key partner ensuring quality and consistency. It was a great growing season last year followed by excellent warm dry harvest conditions. It has meant record yields right across the board in all the regions that Gladfield growers supply from. “It’s going to be tough selecting a winner for the recent harvest once we have received all the barley at the end of the year, that’s for sure,” Doug said. “We noticed that it was the first time for a number of years where some of the new varieties stood out and showed their true ability to yield with the obvious absence of Ramularia.” Ramularia is a barley fungal disease that has proved hard to suppress over recent times. “The farmers needed a good harvest; it is not an easy game to play, you have a lot of unpredictable challenges and if you don’t have a win every now and then, it’s hard to survive,”

Doug added. “Hopefully, the recent events will inspire people to get out and support local and appreciate the effort and sacrifice of all those involved from the grower right through to the shop, bar or restaurant owner. “Gladfield is committed to the local community and appreciates the support it gets from its grower suppliers, they are awesome,” he concluded.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) announcement recently that it intends to close Arthur’s and Porter’s Passes whenever it snows, is yet another blow for Selwyn communities on both sides of the Southern Alps facing an already uncertain post Covid-19 season,” National’s candidate for Selwyn Nicola Grigg said. “This is a backwards step that completely undermines the Government’s claim it wants to help businesses recover in what will already be a tough season for many operators in this part of our electorate, particularly ski fields,” she said. “Thousands of jobs rely on the success of Selwyn’s six ski fields and all the other businesses that support them. “Regular users of these roads know the policy is unreasonable with over 10,000 people having already signed the petition urging Minister Phil Twyford to overturn this decision. It will not only have a devastating impact on Selwyn businesses, but on

residents who need to travel in the alpine parts of the Selwyn electorate, and to and from the West Coast,” Nicola explained. “This is yet another nanny state decision being made by people in Wellington with no consideration of the impact on people’s lives, all at a time when Road User Charges and Fuel Tax have

never been higher,” she said. “I call on NZTA to reconsider this over the top, ridiculous policy. Now that NZ is down to Level 1 local community sports are underway again. For Malvern Netball the late start means a few changes, but still gives everyone the opportunity to play. The season will, this year, be running throughout Term 3. • Years 11-2: This will be held on Monday afternoons at Darfield Courts and introduces Netball to 5-6 year olds. The aim is to develop fundamental movement and basic Netball skills. Playing 4 v 4 allows the players to pass, catch and shoot from day one. • Years 33-4: This will also be held on Monday afternoons at Darfield Courts and is designed to be fast and fun, maximising participation and touches of the ball. With modified equipment and less players on the court in 5 v 5, the game is less complicated than the full version. • Years 55-6 and Years 77-9: This year this age group will be structured differently, enabling players to train and play on a Saturday morning. Teams still have the option to train mid-week, but it won’t be a necessity which frees up more time for other commitments. These groups will attend Academy/Development sessions and learn a variety of new skills and drills, as well as playing structured ageappropriate netball. • Years 9+: Malvern Netball align with DHS at this age group and teams play for Malvern in the Selwyn Competition. This enables players to remain under the Malvern umbrella, but still work on developing their netball, and gives them the opportunity to follow representative pathways at a higher level than Malvern can provide. • Social: Social netball is played on a Saturday morning and spaces are still available for those that are keen to participate. With the introduction of the new Year 5-9 Academy it means mums can transport their child to participate, play netball themselves and still have the afternoon free. • Walking Netball: Malvern will be holding a few walking netball sessions over the season for those that are keen. The game has been designed so that anyone can play, regardless of age, or fitness level. • Senior Netball: This year the Senior Competition will be played under lights at the Darfield Courts on a Wednesday night, starting early July. This initiative has attracted a lot more players to this grade.
