Local to Hororata for over twenty years Anne Lesley Richardson was made an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to wildlife conservation in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours. Anne is the Wildlife Manager at The Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust (ICWT), an organisation that has helped to prevent the extinction of several native, endemic New Zealand birds. She has worked in the wildlife

industry for thirty eight years, the last twenty eight of them at Peacock Springs (ICWT). ICWT is in the unique situation, of being funded solely by the Trust and being private, therefore not open to the public. More concentration can therefore go into the breeding of New Zealand birds in very large aviaries employing natural conditions and with no disturbance from visitors.

There are of course numerous jokes - some more funny than others. One such which gave me a smile said: “During the

middle ages they celebrated the end of the plague with wine and orgies. Does anyone know if they have anything like that planned when this one ends? (asking for a friend!)

Level 1 was announced at 3pm on Monday June 8th and took effect at midnight, June 8th. Probably wise to take effect fairly instantly as there appeared to be a general reluctance to continue rule-following that wouldn’t have improved I suspect, had Level 2 gone on any longer. Of course we’re all well aware of the dangers if the borders are relaxed and most of us agree that this currently wouldn’t be a good thing; but some sort of Australian or Pacific Island bubble may quell the unrest albeit briefly. Doing business locally is the way to go and while money may be a bit tight for some, keeping it in New Zealand is definitely going to help with economic recovery. We can at least now go to our favourite restaurant, café, or pub, and do what New Zealanders like to do best - chat and interact with others at our preferred eatery (or drinkery). The two metre rule was always awkward and created situations that didn’t sit well with trusting, easy-going Kiwis. While we still have to employ some common sense; stay home if we’re ill and continue with good hygiene practises, here’s hoping that life can return to a little normality, but sadly not at this stage for those who rely heavily on overseas visitors unfortunately.
