Local Greendale author Carol Mutch didn’t waste her lockdown period, instead she wrote four children’s books!

Carol presented the books in pdf form to assist teachers in encouraging children to talk about their experiences of the pandemic lockdown.

“The books were picked up by educational websites for parents and teachers to help children talk about their lockdown experiences in a non-threatening way," Carol explained.

The four stories are based around pictures featuring her son’s bear who describes his own experiences of isolation with his humans. In the stories readers see Bear doing some of

He makes ‘Bear paw cookies’ for his humans, has a picnic with his friend Alligator, does some incompetent gardening and has a sports’ contest with Alligator. He also attends the stand-at-dawn Anzac ceremony at the Greendale memorial, he gets lost in the bush (Carol and her husband Roger’s garden) and feels sad because his humans’ aunt dies and they can’t attend her funeral.

Local photographer Izzy Malone is making quite a name for herself with her spectacular images, often of community events, and often to be seen online and in print publications.

"I am a photographer living in beautiful Springfield with my husband, two wild children and a few furry friends,” Izzy reported. “I was born and bred in Vienna, Austria,” Izzy added.

“About eight years ago, when I basically just needed a job, my then-boyfriend needed a photographer. He put a camera in my hand and off I went, shooting my first event, with the best intentions and absolutely no idea. I must have done alright though, as soon after, friends asked me to shoot their weddings and portraits. I guess, for most photographers, the journey begins with a hobby and some encouraging feedback,” she commented.

“It didn’t stop there for me though: I decided to study photography and finished my training in 2015, just before my first child was born,” Izzy said.

“My real professional journey started when we moved to Australia and I got the chance to shoot promotions for tourist companies and events. By that time I had already updated my equipment from my starter’s kit, and I went for an unexpected dive in the Mekong River… but that is another story!

“Since then I’ve continued to learn, widen my experience and field of expertise - my photography practice is eclectic - there is a natural beauty in every candid moment, and I made it my goal to capture it and make it a memory to keep,” Izzy explained.

“My focus lies in visual storytelling, emotive portraiture, event and lifestyle photography, but also architectural, landscape and brand photography. Additionally I donate my time and work once a year for charity; please get in touch with me if you’d like me to cover your good cause.

“I am constantly continuing to learn and to play with genres and ideas that catch my interest

and inspire me. During the lockdown I took a creative photography course which gave me a boost following my second baby-break and gave me a focus to get my business up and running again,” Izzy said.

“I don’t want to sell people anything they don’t need,” Izzy stressed. “I have an idealistic idea that professional photos should be affordable and personal. They shouldn’t just capture smiling faces, but genuine moments, the love for each other, the friendship and the precious first days of something new,” she said.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting more locals and capturing some beautiful moments. It’s for this reason that I’m offering a discount for family sessions and equine portraits, but I’m happy to wrap individual packages for individual people and their special wishes," Izzy concluded with a smile.

News broke last week that the immensely popular and muchlooked-forward-to Take A Kid Fishing event for 2020 scheduled to be held at The Groynes, has been cancelled.

The event run by The Kids Fishing Charitable Trust and supported by The Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust usually attracts between six and seven thousand children.

Chairperson of the Kids Fishing Charitable Trust and ex-local Dave Denton commented:

“It is a huge disappointment to make the decision to cancel Take a Kid Fishing, due to Covid-19. Our concerns are the health risks at a gathering of around 6,000 kids on the day, plus, many of our volunteers are elderly and fall into the high risk area.

“Our sponsors for the fish are Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust who meet a not inconsiderable cost. From now until the event is the expensive time to grow fish and we could

not commit them to providing this funding, only to have the event cancelled due to the Covid-19 controls not being lifted in time.

“Lots of bookings; venue, equipment and volunteers etc all need to be placed now. It’s too uncertain and we would be unable to confirm things.

“However we will be back in 2021 around mid-October and doing our best to provide a great Take a Kid Fishing event,” Dave concluded.

In the property sector, conveyancing settlements and relocations are proceeding.

First Home Grant and Kiwisaver withdrawal applications continue to be processed. If you are wanting to sell, and have spent the lockdown period attending to home maintenance, now may be the perfect opportunity to get your home listed.

The Government announced a freeze of rent increases and

protections against tenancy terminations. Tenants unable to pay their rent should contact their landlord and see if a payment plan can be agreed.

Tenants are still liable for rent and landlords can ask tenants to pay what is owing. Landlords may seek a monetary order from the Tribunal for rent arrears but cannot currently terminate the tenancy if the rent is less than sixty days in arrears.

Landowners, if you are struggling economically, there may be opportunity to take a ‘mortgage payment holiday’ or to refinance your assets.

Businesses must consider what risk mitigation measures should be implemented in the workplace to comply with health and safety obligations. We encourage all business owners and operators to follow the guidance issued by WorkSafe.

Businesses should review the

specific terms of their commercial lease agreement before considering the applicability of the Doctrine of Frustration or Force Majeure clause. Force Majeure clauses are contractual mechanisms to deal with events which are beyond the reasonable control of a party. Where they apply, frustration principles will not. We are assisting clients with negotiating a ‘fair proportion’ reduction in rent and outgoings in various circumstances.

Finally, we emphasise the importance of Estate Planning (think Relationship Property, Wills, Powers of Attorney, and Trust advice). This is something we encourage all clients to actively structure and review.

This initiative was the result of the Café’s coffee supplier, Hummingbird offering to reward people in the community during Level 3, and to get people coming back to cafés now it’s Level 2. Hummingbird selected their top twenty customers for the promotion of which

Winter is upon us and there have already been a few good frosts. It’s dead battery season.

We have been busy replacing vehicle batteries that aren’t starting in the mornings. But why do batteries fail when the cold weather rolls in? The most common type of car battery is ‘Lead Acid’. The inner workings of a battery require a chemical reaction to store and then release the stored energy.

When the ‘Lead Acid’ battery fluid is very cold it thickens, or freezes, and this slows the chemical reaction, thus reducing the battery’s output. A battery that is over three or four years old will only have 50-70% of its original capacity. If your vehicle sounds slow to start bring it in for a free battery check before it’s too late and it lets you down.

Engine oil is the blood of your car. Of course, it lubricates all moving parts; it also washes away by-products of combustion (this is why is goes black). It plays a big part in cooling the extremely hot parts of the engine during running. As oil gets old it thickens and loses a lot of the properties required to protect your engine. When oil is thick and cold this puts extra load on the starter motor and battery during cold starts.

The cooling system gets a hard time and is often over looked.

The cooling system main components are radiator, water pump, hoses, and coolant (water/antifreeze mix). The antifreeze concentration must be checked during regular servicing. Antifreeze isn’t just to

stop the freeze part; it also helps stop rust forming in the cooling system. It increases the boiling point of the coolant and lubricates and conditions the water pump seals and rubber components in the cooling system.

This month’s top tips, • Look after your battery, keep it clean and if it is sounding slow then get it checked before it lets you down.

• Change your engine oil at least once a year or every 10,000kms.

• Flush your cooling system and replace antifreeze regularly.

School’s and Preschools in the area welcomed back their students after lockdown with most having a near-to full complement of pupils back in the classroom. Preschools were perhaps the exception with many parents still able to work from home - however numbers changed daily as people returned to their workplaces.

We were very excited to fully reopen our School on May, 18th and welcomed back our wonderful and amazing tamariki and whanau. It had been a long time away from School for everyone, and you could see and feel the excitement and jubilation as tamariki, whanau and kaimahi reconnected with each other. It was heartwarming to have all the smiles, laughter and happy faces reenergising our School.

For the rest of this term our focus will be to support our students and whanau wellbeing as they transition back into school life and routines. The Ministry of Education has been very supportive and provided clear guidelines to enable the School to create a safe and positive environment for everyone. I feel it is important to recognise our tremendous staff

for all their hard work during the distance learning period and on the transition back to school life. We have an amazing team and community and a school we are all very proud to be a part off.

Daisy, Daisy Abigail, Abigail Kaitlyn, Kaitlyn Keira and Taylor wrote the following reflection on their first week back at school. “We are happy about coming back to School. It is really cool to see so many smiling faces and we love playing together again. It is hard getting back into the routine but definitely worth it!

“Greendale School pupils returned with a ‘Funday Monday’ - where staff and students came in their pyjamas, or favourite lockdown clothes,” explained CareyCarey-Anne Whitaker, Whitaker Greendale School Principal. “It was a really nice transition back to and they brought some special foods and watched a movie with classmates.

Matai class have created visual posters showing their ‘memories of Covid-19’, while the senior class studied artworks by Lee Anderson, Anderson an American artist. Students created a collaborative art work representing our own bubbles becoming one expanded bubble,” Carey-Anne said. “Another fun activity was based around a watched video clip; the true story of students living on an island in Thailand, that had no land space for a soccer field.

To be able to play football they built a floating soccer field. Greendale students did just that as well (in model form) - showing perseverance, resilience and problem solving!

Lastly a group saved some birds’ eggs. We are loving being back together,” CareyAnne concluded.

The Malvern Community Arts Council (MCAC) will mark its 42nd year of operation at its AGM on Wednesday, June 24th 2020 at Te Huanui Gallery in Darfield. In his Chairperson’s report, Philip Baldwin will look back over some of the Arts Council’s highlights during 2019, including another successful Darfield Artweek.

“Looking to the future, our biggest challenge is recruiting volunteers to help operate the Gallery,” Philip explained. “We would love to add folks to our roster who are willing to give a few hours a month to keep Te Huanui open. There are also some vacancies on our Performing Arts and Darfield Artweek committees that would

suit people who have an interest in the arts, even though they only have a small amount of time to offer.

“With the end of the lockdown and re-opening Te Huanui on May 29th after a two-month closure, we are pleased with our newest exhibition, ‘Through the Lens’, which showcases some spectacular photographic work and wood carving,” Philip said.

Located at 17 South Terrace, Te Huanui will be open for reduced hours throughout the winter. On Tuesday and Wednesday the Gallery will be open 11am 2pm, and Friday - Sunday 10am - 4pm.

MCAC is also planning for another successful Darfield Artweek in October this year.

“We are optimistic that the lockdown hasn’t dampened the inspiration and creative energy of local artists during history’s most extensive work-from-home experiment.

Artweek can definitely play a part in the recovery of our artistic community and local businesses,” he concluded.

All those interested in MCAC’s mission, ‘to promote art and artists to the people of Selwyn’, are invited to attend the AGM at the Selwyn Gallery (Te Huanui Gallery).

Christchurch earthquakes she focussed her research and writing on the role of schools in disaster response and recovery.

She has been the recipient of awards for her research, teaching and wider contributions to education.

Carol normally commutes each week to Auckland where she is a Professor of Education at the University. She is a world authority on how schools cope in the aftermath of disasters and her disaster research began with the earthquakes in Christchurch and has taken her to Australia, Japan, Samoa, Vanuatu and Nepal. Last week she was a guest on a webinar for 1500 New Zealand teachers, where she advised them to find indirect ways to encourage children to talk about their experiences of the lockdown because those experiences would vary significantly, (for

some children, fun - for others a cause of anxiety.) She has also given the same advice to Australian teachers.

Teachers around the country have been downloading the stories and using them with their classes. One of the sites that specialises in resources for teachers recorded 2,800 downloads within a few days.

"When schools went back, classrooms all over the country read the stories of Bear and his friend Alligator. Teachers sent photos of children reading the stories, or drawing their own bears. One school even created their own sequel to the Bear in Lockdown stories, entitled ‘Bear comes back to School’, where they showed their toy bear how to sanitise his hands and keep his distance," Carol concluded.

He looked so cute; I photographed him and put the photos on Facebook. People gave such enthusiastic feedback that I started creating daily stories," Carol explained. "The stories about a bear in lockdown captured people's imagination and people started to wait for the daily post and then they shared them more widely. At the end of each week, I collated the photographs and stories into books," she added.

"These stories found their way to Scotland, Canada, Japan and Mexico. People started writing to Bear, sending photographs, or videos, of their own bears and talking to him as if he was real," she added with a smile. "I could never have imagined that a few fun photographs could have led to books that have given so much pleasure, but then that is what we needed over the lockdown. Bear's activities mirrored our stories of creating family bubbles, having a designated shopper, watching the Prime Minister at one o'clock and standing at dawn on Anzac Day. They are more than children's picture books, they are records of an extraordinary time in our history," Carol said.

Malvern Community Board Meeting via Zoom, Monday, May 25th 2020 The Malvern Community Board held both its April and May meetings via Zoom due to the current Covid-19 circumstances.

The Board hopes to hold its next scheduled meeting in person.

Members of the community are always welcome to attend these meetings to listen and to present any issues in the Public Forum.

During the lockdown period Board members remained connected to their communities with members working closely with other volunteers to drop groceries and medications to vulnerable residents. The Board would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every local volunteer who stepped up to this role.

During lockdown the Board and Council staff used Zoom to connect with community committees, constantly keeping them updated on happenings within the district. This proved to be highly successful and may well be an ongoing activity.

Many of you would have submitted on the Draft Annual Plan, as the Board did. Public hearings, if possible under COVID-19 restrictions, are planned for June 2nd and 3rd with Council deliberating on June 11th and 12th. Council expects to formally adopt its Annual Plan on Wednesday 24th June. Submissions from the public and the Board can be read on the Council’s website.

The Board plans on having another community dropdrop-in session on 8 June for Hororata and Windwhistle communities. You are invited to join the Community Board at the Hororata Café anytime between 3pm and 6pm to discuss your ideas and suggestions for your community.
