Local Nathan Carter wants to run/walk Rapaki track from sunrise to sunset to raise money for registered charity Learn Active. Learn Active’s mission is to enable people with intellectual disabilities (fifteen years old and above) to explore and have fun in the outdoors, while creating and achieving their goals, learning new skills and building friendships. Throughout Covid-19 Alert levels Nathan has been running, or walking, in Darfield to help him cope with the massive amount of change and uncertainty, something he really struggles with. Nathan is on the Autism spectrum, (this is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behaviour). Nathan also loves going to school (he attends Darfield High School) and has missed school the last eight weeks (including school holidays). “Although he has done many things at home to cope with the multiple changes, running/ walking has been the main source of reducing stress and anxiety,” explained his mum Bridget Carter. Carter “There is a lot of research that exercise can reduce stress and it certainly has helped Nathan,” Bridget said. “Everything has changed; all activities have been

either cancelled, postponed, or delivered differently,” she added. “Nathan has had to adapt everything, except his running/walking. He still has his block to run and in Alert Level 3 he was delighted to be able to run his favourite run, the Rapaki track in Christchurch,” Bridget explained. “He is always enthusiastic about going for a run or walk, you can see it all over his face,” she said. He’s always smiling, full of enthusiasm and has coped incredibly well with the multiple changes over the last few weeks something his family are really

Zara Townsend aged eleven from West Melton has just launched her new and exciting business, Melton Candles; with the name a clever play on words. Zara has grown up with her home smelling lovely thanks to her mum’s obsession with candles, which Zara has clearly inherited. This sparked Zara’s desire to create that same wonderful experience for others. “I really loved arriving home some days and walking into a wonderful smelling home from the candle that had been burning. I wanted to share that feeling with people, and the relaxing environment it creates, so others could come back to it too! There is something comforting and homely about candles,” Zara explained enthusiastically. During lockdown, and after way too much home-baking Zara decided that it was time to take her creativity from the kitchen to the garage. This is how her business plan for Melton Candles was born. Zara, who has been making candles for around six months, has been carefully planning the businesses grand opening. Each candle takes approximately half an hour for Zara to make and she uses a variety of scents, lime basil and mandarin, French pear, salted caramel, caramilk cheesecake, rainforest palm, creme brulee, strawberry guava and brown sugar, white lavender cotton, and fig. She is always looking to find new and amazing perfumes and welcomes any suggestions. Zara is looking at expanding her stock and is currently sourcing some lovely new jars and scents, something to definitely

watch out for in the coming months. From her customers to date Zara has had much positive feedback: “I love my Melton Candle which I was given for Mothers Day. The smell is amazing and I love how posh the packaging is too! I am feeling very spoilt... What a lovely gift!” Caroline Elmore. “Smells amazing and looks beautiful.” Lissa Birse.

How's everyone coping with this weird Level 2? Only ten to attend, unless you, or yours, have sadly passed away and then it's 50. There are so many do's and don’ts that I'm certain I've inadvertently broken the rules. Extending the bubble is all very well (and was much looked forward to as it involved grandchildren) but those I've now included in my bubble have been working and going about their daily lives - which involves numerous contacts. Does that mean I've broken the rules and included all these extras in my bubble too? One thing I am certain of, is the necessity of supporting local. The businesses that over the years have sponsored and donated to your sports team, your charity, your service group, or a family in need for whatever reason; now is the time to return the favour.

Businesses Canterbury-wide need customers and those customers are right here. There are businesses in our midst that usually deal with tourists; that export their products, or that rely on imports to be able to trade - they need cash flow to continue and that comes from customers. While I think we are all aware of the need to change our trading methods and perhaps alter our modus operandi, for some these changes will be a challenge. However from my observation, and with only a few exceptions, businesses in Darfield and surrounds adapted well to constrained trading. However those measures come at a cost also. Signage, reducing number of patrons at any one time, PPE, sanitiser, hours of operation etc etc - the list goes on. The staff wage subsidy was a

help to businesses, but that's only the half of it, the ongoing costs, and now the reduced turnover, will take a toll undoubtedly. We're so lucky out here to have small, niche, owner-operated businesses that don't take their customers for granted. However these same businesses don't have the deep pockets of huge corporates and need ongoing support, now more than ever. Fancy takeaways? Don't think Macca's, or the Colonel - think local! Gifts and clothing, don't think huge online department stores, think Selwyn specialty stores. These are but two examples, because the list is endless - we really do have something to cover every eventuality, and you know what? It’s right here in our midst. Jan Crossley,

Selwyn’s diverse economy and strong agricultural base are likely to reduce the impact of Covid-19 on the District’s economy. That’s according to an initial analysis of the pandemic’s effects on the Selwyn economy, prepared by economic analysts Infometrics. The report, prepared in April, projects that the District’s economy, which has been one of the strongest in the country for several years, will contract by about 5.4 percent over the year to March 2021. Hardest hit is likely to be the construction sector, which could see a reduction of 27 percent, while accommodation and food services could reduce by 22 percent. Lesser reductions could be seen in transport, postal and warehousing activity (-16%), professional, scientific and technical Services (-8%) and retail and wholesale trade (6%). Data showed that consumer spending and traffic volumes were down substantially during lockdown. Around 56 percent of the workforce was able to work under the Level 4 lockdown, and the analysts expected 78% of Selwyn’s workforce was able to work during Level 3. Employment in Selwyn is expected to decline by 2,100 jobs in the year to March 2021, a drop of 8.6 percent - but lower than the forecast national decline of 9.8%. Job losses are expected at all skill levels. The loss of jobs means the

overall unemployment rate in Selwyn is forecast to rise from 2.3 percent in the March 2020 quarter, to 7.1 percent in March 2021. This compares to the forecast national unemployment rate of 9 percent. Selwyn’s house prices are also expected to follow the national trend, and decline 10.8 percent between December 2019 and December 2021, before gradually recovering. Looking ahead, the report suggests that primary sector exports are expected to hold up and food product manufacturing will expand slightly, supporting the district’s longer-term recovery. Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said the report provides a mix of good and bad news. “We can’t ignore the fact that many households and businesses in Selwyn have been hard hit by this pandemic,” he said. “Many people have lost jobs, businesses have been forced to close, and our overall economic activity has declined steeply. “It will take time for us to recover from this. It’s not a great position to be in, but because we are less exposed to the international tourism market we’re certainly better off than many other parts of the country. “It’s clear that the construction boom we’ve been experiencing for the past several years will take a hit - but at the same time we know Selwyn offers a great lifestyle and affordable housing options that will remain attractive to many families.

After five years of running his seed dresser as a side venture local Jeff Cridge will now make his mobile seed dressing unit a full time enterprise. An increase in demand will see Jeff now better able to be more available and flexible with meeting clients’ needs and the deadlines in dressing and treating farm safe, cereal seeds. Jeff provides an on-farm service where he can clean, treat and bag seed ready for drilling onfarm, providing numerous savings for the grower. Jeff is also able to bulk, or bag, lots into specified units at the grower’s request. He can supply a range of fungicides and insecticides to treat the cereal seed, as specified by the grower. “We work closely with Nufarm and BASF chemical companies who supply Systiva, Vitaflow, Nipsit (Poncho) and Senator (Gaucho),” Jeff explained. “We are also able to provide other

treatments such as Rancona, Raxil Star and most other seed treatments on request,” he added. “We also work with Seed Lab and can provide germination tests for the grower,” Jeff said. “For next year’s harvest we hope to have our screen up and running which removes the

small grains to meet contract requirements,” he reported. “This screen can also be used to remove green material from clover seed samples,” Jeff concluded.

Tree too big? Not enough light? Or just untidy!

With hunters now able to access the back blocks for hunting, it is a prudent time to raise issues of firearms safety. First and foremost every firearms’ user should be very familiar with the seven basic rules of the Firearms’ Code. 1)Treat every firearm as loaded 2)Always point firearms in a safe direction 3)Load a firearm only when ready to fire 4)Identify your target beyond all doubt 5)Check your firing zone 6)S t o r e f i r e a r m s a n d ammunition safely 7)Avoid alcohol or drugs when handling firearms. Statistically during the roar most years in New Zealand a hunter will be shot and likely killed when out deerstalking in the New Zealand backcountry. With lockdown this year due to the Covid-19 virus, hunting during the majority of the roar has been forbidden. Why do hunters get shot? Quite simply the person firing the firearm has not adhered to rule four of the Arms Code; ‘Identify your target beyond all doubt’. In my lifetime I personally know four hunters who have shot a human whilst deerstalking, a pretty sad statistic. Being a holder of a firearms’ licence is a privilege not a right. Police make stringent background enquiries into every firearms’ licence application as to that person's suitability to be a fit and proper person to possess a firearms’ licence. Firearms’ Codes can be downloaded from the New Zealand Police website. Please remember to obtain the

Especially for rural people, installing alarm and home security camera systems will improve your property’s safety from burglars. Be aware of telephone and internet scams at this current time also. We continue to hear

permission of landowners before venturing onto private land to hunt. If the landowner declines that is his or her right, please respect that. Permits for Department of Conservation administered land can be obtained online. Under the Wild Animal Control Act 1977, the current penalty for hunting on property without the authority of the landowner (Poaching) is a $100,000 fine and/or two years imprisonment. For young aspiring hunters in our community here are a few useful tips before you head out in the roar. • Take the time now to sight in your rifle before you venture out hunting, get to know where the projectile is hitting at different distances. (If you are stalking in the bush during the roar your shots are most likely going to be taken in the five to ten metre range, out to maybe twenty metres maximum). On numerous occasions local Facebook community pages have referred injured bird finders to the Oxford Bird Rescue (OBR). The reports are gl ow in g fo l l ow in g t h ei r assistance. Scott and Tracey Bowman of OBR got involved in bird rescue after Scott hit a hawk back in 2011 and struggled to find a bird rescue that would take it. They ended up getting onto an organisation that had just started up called Canterbury Raptor Rescue (CRR). “While following the rehab of our bird we got hooked and started volunteering with them,” the couple commented. “Because of the number of natives that came our way we also got a bird rehab permit from Department Of Conservation,” Scott and Tracey explained. “In 2016 we incorporated CRR into OBR. We tried to keep going assisting all birds, but in 2017 we realised it just wasn't possible and so made the call to revert back to our roots and only deal with raptors,” Scott said. “Because our permit is for

all natives we do still take the odd non-raptor from time to time. However more often we act as an information service and put people on to the right organisation for the type of bird they have,” Tracey added. “The two main birds we deal with are Little Owls and Harrier Hawks. Both can be quite divisive as one is an introduced species and one is a native that does tend to give itself a public relations upper cut by targeting people’s chickens and ducks,” Scott said. “We get the odd New Zealand Falcon in from time to time, but we don't have the right facilities for them so we pass the m on to the Marlborough Falcon Conservation Trust in Blenheim. The surrounding geography is what dictates us primarily rehabbing Harrier Hawks and Little Owls who both prefer open farmland for hunting,” they explained. “We also rehab Harrier Hawks for both the Dunedin Wildlife Hospital and the South Island Wildlife Hospital based in Christchurch. They are a bird that requires quite

specific food and housing and as they do have the ability to put holes in you with their talons, it pays to have a bit of experience when handling them,” the pair reported. “We try to engage the rescuers in the rehab process and if the rehab is successful get the rescuers to do the release back where the bird was found. “We have a fairly good following in the North Canterbury area and try hard to educate and raise awareness about the birds we work with. We also try to engage the public in ways they can help these birds; moving carrion off the road if safe to do so; leaving an outside light on if you have Little Owls in the area as the light attracts moths etc a favourite food for Little Owls,” Tracey explained. “Being just a small husband and wife team, we juggle the bird rescue around our full time jobs. We are very hands-off with the birds in care, as much as possible, as both Little Owls and Harrier Hawks are easily stressed by humans. “Once injuries have healed we build up strength, condition and flight stamina giving birds the best chance to return to the wild in top shape. We partner with a number of vets around the South Island but our main two are in Oxford and Rangiora who both donate their time which is a godsend,” Tracey and Scott stressed. We take a lot of birds from other bird rescues all over the South Island; it really is a big network that operates on good team work,” the couple said. OBR operates an education programme with a blind Little Owl called Oscar. Tracey and Oscar visit schools, community groups and rest homes to talk about Raptors, rescue etc and generate interest in the birds. Prior to Covid 19 Tracey would embark on around two education visits per week. OBR have also just presented their first ever virtual school visit via Zoom. It was a great experience and may open the door to schools that are too far away for them to travel to. OBR are pretty much self funded, doing a calendar every year which is their primary fundraiser.
