In the past six years, the Hororata Community Trust has donated 9,000 Daffodil bulbs to community groups all over our area to encourage people to join together and plant them. Due to the current situation this year we cannot join together to plant bulbs, but we didn’t want to let this opportunity go past. This year will see the tally go to 10,000 bulbs donated to our community. The Hororata Community Trust has donated 1,000 bulbs this year for people to plant in front of their properties and line the roads into Hororata. Imagine in spring when the Daffodils flower how amazing it will look to see our roads brightened with a splash of yellow. People were able to collect a

“Now we’re into Covid-19 Level 2 , there is an urgent need, as a community, to rally around local businesses,” said Rachel Ferguson owner of Darfield’s Dalethorpe House, situated above The Fat Beagle Café and alongside the Darfield Eco Garden Centre. “Acting now will ensure the future of our business district,” she added. “This is not just a business problem. though. It is an issue for the wider community, and I would hope we can all respond accordingly,” Rachel explained. No one would disagree that small and medium enterprises are incredibly important to local communities, and their survival to continue serving their customers is dependent on support right now. “If people rally around our local specialty stores we may not be faced with a raft of empty shops in the future,” Rachel stressed. “While I am excited at the prospect of coming out of lockdown, I have used this opportunity to give Dalethorpe House a new look. I’ve also had time to research quality, additional suppliers and very excitedly launched my online shopping website,” she said. “The website has taken an enormous amount of work, but I

am so pleased with the result. It’s clear, simple and userfriendly,” Rachel reported. Rachel has found the last two weeks of local support to be a heartwarming experience. She has been receiving orders and offering contactless collection, free local delivery, or via the postal service, and the response gives her great optimism for the future. “I am so impressed with the

creativity and flexibility of local businesses and their response to our recent challenges,” she said. “It’s great to see our downstairs café The Fat Beagle, welcoming the return of customers. I am confident that our local shops will support one another and emerge stronger, together.” “Now, more than ever, I encourage people to shop locally,” Rachel concluded.

Local company Hunter Glass (Grant Grant and Malin Hunter) Hunter and Steph Kimber of Mike Pero Real Estate have combined their resources, this time to provide another community project. Living and helping, as well as being in business, in the area, they are both proud promoters of the community and between them support many causes. Grant is a volunteer with the Sheffield Fire Brigade and Hunter Glass have sponsored local rugby and cricket teams. Steph sponsors the Hororata and Greendale golf clubs, and the Darfield High School Outdoor education classes. to name but a few. This time they have coordinated and expertly designed and made a new community

board, which is situated at Hororata Motors. “Isolation Level 4 was a great time to get this project finished,” Steph commented. The Board is already in use, with one of its first notices being for the Malvern Community Hub, a division of the Two Rivers Community Trust. “Their notice pertained to supporting those aged 70+ and vulnerable, with shopping and delivery,” Steph explained. Steph helped with the collection and delivery of necessary supplies during Level 4, as well as with sanitising at Darfield’s Four Square supermarket; at the onset of this most unusual Covid-19 time. “Hats off to local businesses, open during Level 4, with their Health and Safety

protocols and keeping us safe,” she said. “Using local people and services and shopping in our community is key as we move forward into the new norm,” both Grant and Step h concluded.

WHAT NOW?? Covid 19 is another blip in the history of mankind. Property values may plummet, unemployment may rise, the world economy may collapse!! What now? Life happens! We have been through similar scenarios before and will do so again and again. Rule of thumb is generally to buy and sell in the same market, but if this is your first rodeo then what should you do? Yes housing markets may fall, and if you buy now, then your property may not be worth the purchase price a year down the track, but…. That will only matter if you have to sell. Properties are an investment and as such, should not be bought as a liquid asset - i.e. you shouldn’t buy if you are needing to sell again in the short term. During the time you own a property, the value may go up or down, and you could get caught if circumstances force you to sell in a trough. If you don’t need to sell, then hold on because what goes down invariably comes up, and the opposite is also true. Look after the things you can control and keep the faith. Landlords may seek a monetary order from the Tribunal for rent arrears but cannot currently terminate the tenancy if the rent is less than sixty days in arrears. Darfield High School’s Head Boy Harry Williamson and Head Girl Rozlyn Doherty explain what lockdown has been like for them and what they are looking forward to. Harry: Whilst being stuck at home, like everyone, I’ve had my good days and bad days. However, I have been able to keep myself busy, by either being glued to my piano for hours on end, doing some chores around the house, exercising in some form, video calling mates, or in the end just sitting watching a movie (can’t count on my two hands how many I have watched so far). I’ve also been lucky to still be working at The Challenge in Darfield which lets me socialise face-to-face with people other than my mum. I’m definitely looking forward to starting back at school. and I, along with the other head prefects, are working with ideas to get everyone's motivation and enthusiasm levels back to normal, as soon as they come back to school. This is to allow people to feel a bit more comfortable with each other considering the circumstances, and to regain their excitement surrounding education (although they might not like to admit it). Rozlyn: I find being in isolation good but also inconvenient for doing school work. Being at home I've been able to do the things

around the house we have been meaning to for awhile. I’ve been getting back into little hobbies, facetiming people and spending more time with my family. I’ve also been keeping busy by still being able to work at Johnny Fresh. Doing school at home I've learnt you have to not be scared to email your teachers whenever you're stuck and to ask for Zoom calls if you do need them. I’m also looking forward to going back to school, being able to see my friends/ everyone and being back in the classroom.

Tree too big? Not enough light? Or just untidy!

This week we left behind seven weeks of lockdown and moved into Level 2. This has been a tough time for all of our community and your Council has done everything within our power to keep you safe and to keep the essential services that you rely on, in place. However the Council has only been one part of the jigsaw. Across Selwyn our people have listened to the rules and have ‘done the right thing’. At the same time volunteers, community groups, emergency services, essential workers and many others have worked tirelessly looking after the needs of our community. If I could, I would thank you all individually. In expectation of a move to Level 2 your Council have

prepared in advance and are now re-opening many of our facilities. They will be different. Please do not expect to step back into our old ways. Think of the next few weeks as a transition towards a ‘new normal’. Recreation facilities and many other services will resume, but social distancing will still be in place, as will enhanced hygiene measures. Things may take a little longer and the people you interact with, or who are also using the facility, may be nervous about being closer to others. I ask for your patience and understanding and continue to be kind. Level 2 offers much more freedom and you should take full advantage of the reduced

I am sure many people around Selwyn would have breathed a huge sigh of relief, or cheered out loud, in their living rooms on Monday when the Prime Minister announced that we could collectively move down from Alert Level 3 to Alert Level 2 on Thursday. Teachers and students will be eager to get back into their classrooms after the weekend and I am sure most parents will be welcoming this shift to greater normality. Despite the availability of online tools to facilitate learning, many have found they are just no substitute for the classroom environment with a teacher there to motivate and engage students. Hands on learning in subjects such as technology, science and others i s particularly difficult to achieve remotely. Our public facilities including pools and gyms are now able to open and our shops, restaurants and cafés can allow customers to walk through the doors once more, albeit with restrictions in place around social distancing and hygiene. People can now travel between regions again to visit family and friends, take a holiday, or do business. While this relaxation of restrictions will help bring some businesses back from the brink, it will be a long, hard road

for many and it remains to be seen how freely people will be able and willing, to spend. Sectors of the economy such as tourism and large-scale events are not going to be able to bounce back for a long time. Sadly, the Canterbury A & P Show has fallen victim to the uncertain outlook for mass gatherings. The organisers have made the early decision not to hold a Show this November for the first time since World War II. I know many exhibitors will be hugely disappointed by this announcement; however, it is understandable given the current environment and the huge amount of planning and investment that needs to happen in advance. Despite the challenges ahead, our primary sector remains a solid pillar of our economy. With a shortage of workers previously available to fill roles in the dairy and horticulture sectors; other industries are now laying off staff. This means there will be opportunities available for those who are willing and able to move to take up these previously hard to fill positions. I was relieved to read a recent article penned jointly by the respective Ministers responsible for trade in New Zealand, Australia, UK and Singapore (David Parker, Simon

AshAsh-Leigh Campbell (aged 28) was recently named as the winner of the Dairy Woman of the Year Award. It’s been a few days since Ash-Leigh was announced as the recipient and she commented that it feels like it’s finally starting to sink in, now that she is back at work. “I have been absolutely bombarded with so many messages of support and congratulations, industry wide,” Ash-Leigh said. “It has really reiterated how many people I have crossed paths with, connected and worked with and alongside, in this industry,” she added. “Since the announcement it has been confirmed that I am the youngest ever winner of the award. The judges’ comments were that I showed an unprecedented amount of passion and excitement for the industry, as well as an unashamed ambition to succeed in it. The judges described me as honest, motivated, driven, positive and engaging,” AshLeigh explained proudly. She has worked for Ngāi Tahu Farming for three and a half years immediately prior to the Awards. Her first role there was as their Sustainability Coordinator, while her current role, and one she’s been in for over two years, is that of Technical Farm Manager. AshLeigh is responsible for assisting with the management and performance of Ngāi Tahu dairy farms and dairy support farms, including assisting with operational and environmental performance and the implementation and improvement of sustainable farming practices. “My current role requires interaction and engagement with multiple stakeholders and

the public. I also love working with a large team (ten soon to be eleven), plus of course I love cows,” she added. Ash-Leigh has had a huge involvement with Young Farmers which started when she was working in Dunsandel for TH Enterprises (Trevor Trevor and Harriet Hamilton). Hamilton She joined the Dunsandel Young Farmers’ Club which helped her make friends and have off-farm activities with like-minded people, her own age. She believes Young Farmers has helped her get to where she is today and she thoroughly enjoyed all the fun over the years with NZYFC. “This has resulted in me seeking the personal development and growth opportunities the organisation offers. I now wear the top hat as chair of NZYF and have done for the last two years,” she said. Ash-Leigh loved her time working for TH Enterprises, “I think what made this job more engaging was it wasn’t just one dairy farm, it was four and so we all worked together and created a real ‘big family/ community’. They also allowed me to continue studying through Primary ITO,” she reported. “The connections made at Dunsandel Young Farmers scored me my next job,” AshLeigh said. “This was managing a dairy support/dry stock unit on Morven Farm in Sheffield, owned by the Deans family and leased to the Todd family,” family she added. “I absolutely loved the two years I spent there before heading back to university in 2015.
