Residents of Kirwee have been entertained during lockdown by poetry posted daily on a Hoskyns Road fence, courtesy of writer Robinne Weiss. Robinne and her family moved to Kirwee the day before lockdown and are currently resident in their shed while their new house awaits completion. “Lockdown was a bit of a blow,” Robinne said. “We intended to spend a fair bit of time travelling while the house was being finished. Instead, we’ve been stuck in the shed, unable to even meet our new neighbours,” she added. When her husband suggested she write poetry to post on the builder’s fence, she seized the idea and ran with it. “I thought it would cheer me up and start making connections to the neighbours,” she explained. The poems are meant to be silly and light-hearted - designed to make people smile. By all

appearances, they’ve been a success. Every day sees people stopping by to read the newest instalment, sometimes aloud for their children. Of the poems, Robinne said, “They’re not exactly high-quality poetry, but I’ve made people smile and laugh during a difficult time. That’s really what matters.” Robinne has also posted her daily poems on her blog, where they’ve entertained people all over the world. In addition to poetry, Robinne writes speculative fiction for children and adults. Her most recent publications include the fourth book in her Dragon Slayer series for ages 8 to 13, and an urban fantasy for adults.

As we move through the changing alert levels it is clear that the impact of the lockdown will affect different parts of our community in different ways. There is no silver bullet, or one size fits all solution, so it’s important for our Council to have a clear view of the economic and welfare issues that face us in the future. Only then can we work with our community to provide the targeted support that will help us emerge from these difficult times in the best possible shape. We have already proposed changes in ratings measures to alleviate financial hardship and we are keen to hear your views about these at:

However, there are long term welfare, economic and environmental issues that we will encounter in the coming

weeks, months and years. To understand these issues the Council called together a group of more than eighty leaders, influencers and community representatives in a series of meetings last week. People were invited from all parts the community including business development organisations, foodbanks, employers and employees, farmers, tourism operators, charities, community leaders, and leaders from Selwyn’s biggest and smallest businesses. Over two days participants offered their views and shared information via video conferencing from their boardrooms and their kitchen tables. There were many stories of hardship, but an equal amount of optimism with an overwhelming message that our community needs to work as one to be successful. Over the

The Pines Resource Recovery Park in Rolleston has re-opened under Level 3 using a booking system and with some changes in place to operate safely. “Council staff have developed an online booking system that will enable us to open the Recovery Park to the public, while still complying with Government Alert Level 3 requirements,” Council Solid Waste Manager Andrew Boyd said. “We recognise that during the lockdown, residents have been busy in their gardens and garages and are itching to get rid of their rubbish, recycling and garden waste. We think customers will be glad to see some familiar services restart -

albeit in a slightly different form.” To ensure safe distancing there will be spaces available for five vehicles per thirty minute time slot and only pay wave contactless payment will be available, or those with accounts already set up. The online booking system will be available through the Council w e b s i t e s e l w y n . g o v t. n z / bookpines, and Andrew said people without internet access can call 0800 SELWYN (0800 735 996) and Council customer services staff will be able to arrange a booking. “Customers will receive a specific booking reference number that must be presented at the gate to allow entry,”

A new online game developed by New Zealand disaster recovery agencies is the latest weapon in the war against COVID-19. What’s The Plan Stan? is a free online game developed to teach primary school children how to be prepared for emergencies, and has now been expanded with a new pandemic level in response to the current crisis. The game complements the comprehensive What’s The Plan Stan? online teaching resource and has been developed in partnership with Auckland Emergency Management (AEM), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Earthquake Commission (EQC) to support schools, teachers, parents and students in developing knowledge and skills to prepare for emergency events. The game already included scenarios for earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, volcanoes and even a zombie attack, but the Auckland-based developers, Geo AR Games, have been working day and night to prepare the new pandemic level to deliver messages relevant to COVID-19. “Getting this game and new pandemic level completed wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of so many people and partners,” said Melanie Langlotz, Langlotz Chief Executive Officer of Geo AR Games. “I must acknowledge the incredible efforts of our individual developers who have worked long hours during difficult circumstances to get

this new level completed in double-quick time.” The game is browser-based and can be played on a Chromebook, laptop or PC (with a keyboard), and takes about 30-45 minutes to complete. The game has undergone extensive testing with students and Melanie said that the testing showed that children really enjoyed the game. “More importantly though, the key messages about being prepared for different emergencies really stuck with the children.” NEMA and AEM remain in the thick of the COVID-19 response and AEM Group Controller Kate Crawford said any tool that helps reinforce messaging around how to protect ourselves from the virus remains vitally important. “Steps like washing our hands and keeping two metres distance will help keep all of us safe. This is as true for our children as adults and this game helps get those messages across in a fun and memorable way.” Kate said that the game’s

release marks the culmination of three years’ work. “Because of this earlier work and having the game’s platforms in place, we’ve been able to move at pace to get the new pandemic level completed.” EQC had funded the development of the desktop version of the game, allowing students with less access to mobile devices to take part. “These extraordinary times have required many agencies to adapt from their core work as we all do what we can to help flatten the curve for COVID-19,” said Jo Horrocks, Horrocks EQC Head of Resilience Strategy and Research. When most children head back to school there is something new for Kiwi kids to look forward to - an augmented reality version of the game. This version, which had been the primary focus for Geo AR Games, sees children use mobile devices to physically move through the game’s world.

Selwyn's very own Kirwee Players got a chance to put their longest and strongest, community theatre group on the map on Sunday, April 26th. They showed the rest of New Zealand some of their talents on the popular TVNZ show 'What Now’! The Kirwee Players Production of The Lion King Jr was all set to go, for four shows, in April this year. But, like a lot of things, due to COVID -19, it was put on hold and they were unable to go through with it - just two weeks out from production week. The cast of thirty four (and crew) were gutted, so Director (Kelsea Kelsea NelsonNelson-Cummins) Cummins came up with a dance challenge and promised to create a 'virtual stage' for the cast. When ‘What Now’ heard of this exciting challenge - they were quick to get in contact with the Players. "The cast and crew had worked so hard. The Show was so close to hitting the stage, so I wanted to cheer the kids up and give

them something to work toward during the lockdown and look forward to,” explained Kelsea. “I felt the choice of song, 'We're All In This Together' (from High School Musical) really sent a message out to everyone. I didn't want it to be just about our Theatre Group - but all the theatre kids out there that have had their plans put on hold too,” she added. “The children absolutely shone on TV, just like they did on stage. They were so fantastic we have been invited

back into ‘What Now's studios for another segment later-on in the year, after lockdown,” Kelsea said excitedly. “The Kirwee Players are so proud." Those raised in close living urban centres will have vastly different understandings of urban amenity than those who were raised and lived on a big rural farm for instance. Views will differ around acceptable levels of noise from activities, how many trees, or gardens, are necessary in a development, how much offroad car parking is required for a house, and even how close houses can be to each other. The needs of our ageing population mean smaller sections, smaller houses - but not too small - one carpark, and room for a small vegetable garden. Some of our young people want to be close to the action, don’t need a carpark or outdoor space, and don’t have time for a garden, but they want

Now that our Covid-19 response has moved from Alert Level 4 to Alert Level 3, many of our local businesses have been able to open again, albeit doing things in a different way. It appears from the demand at hardware stores and garden centres both immediately before the change to Alert Level 4 and following the move to Alert Level 3 that a lot of people have been doing hom e ma int en anc e and improvement tasks and gardening during the lockdown. While some have been keenly anticipating a takeaway meal or coffee, the reality for some hospitality businesses is that it remains uneconomic for them to open under Alert Level 3. Meanwhile businesses such as hairdressers, gyms and beauty

salons remain unable to open under the current restrictions. While the Government wage subsidy was a necessary and welcome lifeline for many businesses and their employees, the reality is that businesses that are still having to pay rent and other fixed costs while not earning any income, are hurting. It is my view that more needs to be done to support businesses that remain unable to operate including looking at issues such as rent relief. We can all do our bit by supporting our local businesses when they are able to open and there are s ome gr eat community and industry-led initiatives giving people the ability to pre-purchase vouchers

to use at local businesses in the future. The many people working and learning from home have had cause to be grateful for our national broadband infrastructure and it is pleasing to see the Government has finally recognised the value of continuing to invest in this by re -allocating up to $15 million in savings from the Ultra-fast Broadband initiative to improve rural broadband capacity for remote communities. It is good to see the Government has released some guidelines for those over 70 enabling them to leave their homes to access essential supplies from the pharmacy or supermarket if they prefer to do so rather than relying on others to shop for them. While this age group is most at risk from Covid -19, it is important not to under -estimate the negative effects of isolation on the mental and physical wellbeing of our seniors, many of whom live alone. From this point of view, the ability for families to extend their bubbles to include pa re nt s/ gr a ndp ar e nt s is important. While some of us may have been exercising more than we normally would with daily walks or bike rides, others will be keenly awaiting the signal that community sport such as rugby, football, hockey and netball can get underway. Sport plays a key role in mental and physical health for many people in our communities so I am hopeful that Alert Level 2 will allow for the resumption of community sport. We will all be waiting and watching the case numbers closely over the coming days and hoping for positive signals from the Government that we can progress to Alert Level 2 sooner rather than later. Fulton Cricket have recently announced that country cricketers Jesse Frew and Rhys Mariu have been awarded Fulton Cricket Scholarships for the 2020/21 season. The Fulton Cricket Scholarship is available to a maximum of two Canterbury Country cricketers to assist them in advancing their cricket careers. The recipients are awarded scholarship funding of $2,500, receive mentoring and one on one coaching from Peter Fulton, as well as other personal development assistance, as required. Applicants must be aged between 16-22 years of age and must be currently playing cricket in the Canterbury Country region, or can show suitable links to Canterbury Country. “I've worked with Pete previously through New Zealand U19 camps and really enjoyed his style of coaching,” Jesse

commented. “I am looking forward to picking this up again," he added. “Pete is a busy guy with his role as New Zealand batting coach, so it's great that he finds time to put back into where cricket began for him in Canterbury Country,” Jesse said. Both Jesse and Rhys attended St Andrew’s College in Christchurch and were key members of the Gillette Cup winning side in 2019. Jesse is now at Lincoln University and plays cricket for his local Club, Darfield. He has represented Canterbury at Under 17/19 level and was a member of the New Zealand Under 19 side that played against Australia last July. He has already debuted for the Canterbury Country senior team and should be a mainstay of the side in years to come with his swing bowling and ability to bat in the top order.

Rhys has also come through the Canterbury Country junior ranks. He started at the Rangiora Cricket Club and plays for the Oxford-Rangiora side in the Canterbury Country club competition. One of the highlights of last season was his selection to the New Zealand Under 19 side that took part in the World Cup in South Africa. Rhys opened the batting throughout the tournament and can also bowl some handy leg spinners. Like Jesse, he has also debuted for the Canterbury Country senior side and was a member of the Hawke Cup winning team this season. He is studyi ng at Ca nter bury University this year . Both players have shown a great deal of cricketing potential thus far. They have also exhibited the character and determination required to progress to the highest level. “The Fulton Cricket Trust is delighted to be working with Jesse and Rhys for the next twelve months and congratulates them on this award,” commented a Trust spokesperson. Congratulations Jesse and Rhys for being the 20/21 recipients o f T h e F u l t o n C r ic k e t Scholarship. Both these players are very deserving recipients with bright futures ahead and names to watch out for in the future.

Tracy Botha from Kirwee has been busy during lockdown creating a fabulous masterpiece for her young neighbours. Her wonderful creation was also entered in the Mitre 10 letterbox makeover. There were weekly prizes up for grabs and Mitre 10 encouraged people to think outside the letterbox when creating their masterpieces; think the biggest, ugliest, brightest, quirkiest or boldest transformation! “I really haven’t followed the

competition closely,” Tracy said. “It was probably more aimed at children, whereas I created my decorated mailbox to entertain my young neighbours.” This is not the first of Tracy’s decorations. Previously, and living in Parklands, she provided Christmas letterbox displays each year. Currently though she lives on a back section which created a slight problem for any house decorations, but has brought out her creative side on the mailbox!

“In the city and just after the Christchurch earthquake, a neighbour put a letter into the postboxes on our road asking us all to make an effort to brighten people’s lives, to light our houses at Christmas,” Tracy said. “I started lighting my garden every year, actually causing traffic jams on our road in 2017 and 2018. Christmas 2019 saw our home on the market and needing to remain uncluttered - so no display that year,” she explained. During lockdown creating this fabulous letterbox has kept Tracy out of mischief, she confessed. “It also gave me a challenge while I was at home with my vulnerable mum,” she commented. Tracy’s, two grown-up daughters; Ashleigh and Robyn, Robyn encouraged their Mum to get involved in the letterbox competition and put her creativity to the test. The letterbox took Tracy four days to put together and she confessed to waiting impatiently for the various paints to dry. “All characters were hand drawn, painted, cut out (used left over kitchen vinyl) and glued on to old plastic cutting boards to stiffen. I was lucky that I had numerous test paint pots,” she said. “I was fortunate to audition and get into the School of the Arts, Johannesburg, in my second year of high school. Finishing school I began a career as a Tracer then moved into Computer Draughting,” she explained. “After my daughters were born we moved to the small South African, fishing village, of Mtunzini, away from the city. At this point Computer Draughting was new to the country, and unheard of in rural South Africa. My daughters were in schools in Mtunzini and this is where I started volunteering to paint and create murals in the libraries, classrooms and backdrops for concerts,” she added. “We love New Zealand, but for years there was no cause to use my arty background, and I sort of lost confidence in myself,” she concluded.

To the Editors: As a user of the Kirwee Water Supply, I would like to know when the Council are going to discontinue chlorinating our water supply. Up until recently the only time we had chlorine in the water was when E Coli was found, but since putting in a new pipe line before the lockdown, chlorine has been added. This is affecting my health and I am sure many others. This morning when I made my coffee, it was very strong. Please get us back to our pure, well water. Adrienne Begg, Kirwee.
