Anzac Day, Saturday April 25th was one like never before as New Zealanders kept to their bubbles under Covid Alert Level 4. That didn’t prevent people from commemorating the day in a variety of ways, while keeping their distance. Throughout the district there were some amazing, creative displays of poppies and artwork, there was a rifle salute at Sheffield, a trumpeter in Weedons, pipers in Darfield and many, many people standing in silence at the end of their driveways as the sun rose. Rev Susan Baldwin prepared an online tribute which was appreciated by many and the New World chain of supermarkets lost many of their re-usable red shopping bags to poppy production!

While it wasn’t an Anzac Day like those that’ve gone before, it was described as poignant nevertheless.

“We are all staring into an extremely uncertain future, personally and professionally, and we have had to take a hard look at our operation to safeguard our survival in the coming months, as well as the predicted recession,” so said the directors of Darfield’s 73 Hire, Les and Cath Barnett The Business’s customers in Malvern and Oxford have been instrumental in establishing 73 Hire and Les and Cath thank them for their support and friendship over the past eight years of operation.

“For us to survive, we have to consolidate our operation and we have had to consider where the best opportunities are to

weather this economic turmoil,” the couple said.

“It is with much sadness and regret that we have to inform locals that our Darfield branch will not re-open when the lockdown finishes,” Les and Cath said.

“We have looked at every possible way to keep both branches open,” the pair said sadly. “With our emotional connection to Darfield it has been a painful decision, but the economic analysis makes it clear that maintaining the Rolleston branch gives us the best chance to continue our business.”

Both Les and Cath recognise the frustration and logistical issues this closure will create for their

Malvern and Oxford customers, however they add that they are only fifteen minutes down the road from Darfield. The 73 Hire premises in Rolleston is situated on the corner of Hoskyns and Jones Road, opposite Drummond and Etheridge (and the John Deere Tractors).

“We cannot overstate our gratitude to the Darfield, Oxford and wider communities for their support as you have helped us to be what we are today,” Les and Cath said.

“We hope you will continue to support our business, with the same faces, same equipment and the same helpful attitude,” they concluded.

Cricket has a long and rich history in the Malvern district and has been administered by a committee made up of members from individual clubs since at least 1902. This committee met to arrange the competition and rules, finances and trophies.

During the 20th Century clubs like Hororata, and Annat either folded, or merged with neighbouring clubs. For example South Malvern was formed after WW2 when Coalgate and Glentunnel merged. This dynamic process continues today to the point where Darfield and Greendale have been exchanging players in recent seasons to ensure both teams are competitive in their respective grades.

Kirwee, Sheffield, South Malvern and Darfield retain a healthy junior component to their clubs with only Darfield and Greendale fielding a senior side.

The Senior competitions currently have sides from throughout the old Canterbury Country sub-associations of Hurunui, North Canterbury, Malvern, Ellesmere and Banks Peninsula and both Junior and Senior cricket is administered by Canterbury Country cricket from its home at Main Power Oval in Rangiora. The competition and rules, finances and trophies are the responsibility of Canterbury Country cricket.

Club teams travel from as far as Leeston to play at Cheviot and for the first time this season we saw two teams from Ashburton

join the Senior (2nd Grade).

The old Malvern Cricket Sub Association was made obsolete in 2016 when Canterbury Country changed its constitution, so the individual clubs had direct voting rights, instead of the five sub associations. The time has now come for the Malvern Cricket committee to disband and distribute its assets amongst the remaining Malvern clubs. Once the committee is put to bed it is proposed that the trophies will be retired and put on display at Darfield and Greendale Cricket Clubs and any remaining cash will be distributed between the five remaining clubs. Two of the t r ophie s cons ide r e d for retirement include the Malvern

Association Shield which was first presented in 1902 and the Westacre Cup (commonly known as Judd Cup after the Judd Family who donated it) which in recent decades has been the season showpiece.

Before this dissolution takes place, the Sub Association invite feedback from the cricketing public of Malvern.

On Tuesday, April 28th, New Zealand went from Level 4 on the Country’s national lock down to Level 3. Pretty much in summary this allows more people to return to their work, however the bubble principle and social distancing principles still apply.

Further information of the Level 3 restrictions can be accessed via the Government website: https://covid19.govt.nz Police locally have attended three vehicle crashes in the last week on our rural roads, one of them resulted in a fatality, while another was a driver who will be attending court for careless driving, drink driving and breaching the lockdown.

None of these three vehicle

crashes would have happened had the drivers of these three vehicles been adhering to the Level 4 lockdown and essential travel principles and stayed at home in their bubbles.

Pretty much apart from these vehicle crashes the local community and public have taken the lockdown rules on board and have done a great job which has benefitted the Country in its attempt to reduce the incidence of, and hopefully eliminate, the Covid-19 virus in New Zealand.

I imagine that keen local hunters will be chomping at the bit to get back out into the hills, hunting wild game animals.

Max Taylor lives in Springfield with his family, and moved there from the United Kingdom (UK) eight years ago. Both he and his sister Pippa attend Springfield Primary School. Max has literally been running a marathon around his family home, to raise money for Age Concern.

“Max has always been very thoughtful and considerate of others,” explained his mum Kathryn Taylor.

Taylor He was inspired to raise funds for those in need after watching a news report featuring Captain Tom Moore's Moore massively well received fundraiser for the UK NHS. “We talked about how the people of New Zealand have been affected by Covid-19 and the lockdown. Max was particularly worried about the elderly being more vulnerable to the virus and when we discussed how some had to stay isolated from everyone to protect themselves, he worried that they must be very lonely,” Kathryn said. “We did a bit of

research and found that Age Concern Canterbury do great work supporting the elderly in our communities so Max chose them as the recipients for any funds raised,” she commented.

“He came up with the idea of a marathon around the property so Dad (Mark Mark) Mark mowed a track around the lawn and calculated the number of laps he would need to do - 203!! (We started the week thinking it was 192, but the old-fashioned tape measure proved GPS to be lying.),” Kathryn laughed.

Max writes out his laps for each day and ticks them off.

“He is up early every morning to get some done before home

“His wee legs are getting a bit tired, but he's a trooper,” Kathryn concluded.

As we move to level 3 I have been reflecting on the past five weeks of lockdown and how our community has worked together to achieve so much. My thoughts were summarised by our Council’s Civil Defence manager Al Lawn during a meeting late last week when he said. ‘I am in total awe of our community response, they have blown me away by the way they have responded to each other’s needs. I believe this is the reason why we have received a relatively low number of calls from people wanting help, we are all looking after each other.”

I could not agree more with Al’s sentiments. However I am conscious that we cannot afford to relax. Level 3 might offer a little more latitude for our businesses, but for many of us, including me, not much will change. Many of us, including all but essential Council staff, will still be working from home. It is still vital that we maintain social distancing, and abide by the new level 3 rules to avoid a resurgence of the virus.

This week I am looking forward to a series of meetings between the Council and key organisations, and people from across our community. We want to hear from the grass roots of our District how COVID 19 is impacting our business and our community. This will help us understand what we need to do to help with our economic recovery and also where we need to divert our attention to deal with existing, and emerging, welfare and social issues. I will keep you posted with the results.

Fire and Emergency National Manager Risk Reduction, Roxanne Hilliard said it’s important to include these checks in any preparations to return to business as usual, to prevent any hazardou s substance accidents.

"As many businesses had to shut down abruptly when we entered COVID-19 Alert Level 4,

there could be some risks as people began to return to operations this week.

"For example, there could be accidents from leaks, or issues with containers or processing equipment that have been sitting dormant. Or even people forgetting what chemical goes in which container after a month away.

"Make sure there are no leaks in your chemical stocks and that connections on pipes and equipment for handling chemicals are in good working order," she stressed.

"Double check that you are mixing the right chemicals and that you are putting the right chemical in the right containers when transferring chemicals.

"If you do have an accident with any hazardous substances and cannot manage it safely, call 111 and ask for Fire," she concluded.

Council facilities will remain closed to the public from Tuesday (April 28th) - but some building inspections will resume and the Pines Resource Recovery Park will move to reopen under restricted operations.

Activity will also resume on a number of Council’s construction projects across the district, including roading works and facilities construction, with the benefit of helping the local economy get moving again.

From Tuesday, 28th all Council services will be operating under COVID-19 Alert Level 3 restrictions.

In line with direction from Government, Council facilities will remain closed to the public, including the Rolleston Council offices, swimming pools, libraries and service centres, community and recreation centres and community halls.

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said the Council remains focussed on maintaining essential services and infrastructure the District’s communities rely on every day.

“We continue to have the welfare and safety of our community at the heart of everything we do,” he said. “Our staff have been working diligently under challenging circumstances to keep our core services and infrastructure running smoothly.

“I know our communities will have been pleased to see some easing of restrictions from Tuesday, but we’re still a long way from being back to normal.

“Under Level 3 many of our services and facilities will remain closed or restricted - that’s part of our shared nationwide effort to limit movement and interactions with others, to help stop the spread of COVID-19.”

Dog parks are also open, but for safe distancing owners are asked to keep their dogs’ on-leash at all times.

Rubbish collection continues as normal, and with kerbside recycling sorting resuming, householders are urged to continue sorting recycling as normal.

Paul (Macca) and Janelle McIntosh and their family, of West Melton were outside their home for a small dawn service with neighbours (all at a suitable distance of course). In deference to the nationalities of those around them the national anthems of New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom were all sung and the McIntosh family laid their home made wreaths and poppies in commemoration. A neighbour who, as a member of the Selwyn Choir, had planned to be singing in dawn parades in both Christchurch and Rolleston, when this wasn’t possible the ideal compromise was to sing all three anthems. Children in the street read ‘Flanders Field’ aloud and another neighbour read the ode ‘They shall not grow old’. The West Melton street even had its own personalised order of service, put together by a householder who happens to be a graphic designer and able to be printed off by those attending. Once again poppies were made from red shopping bags - showing just how creative everyone can be.

When a friend of Hororata’s Angus (Gus) McGirr came up with the idea of researching some of the background to names on local war memorials, he thought it was a brilliant concept.

“A bunch of us went down to our local cenotaphs and chose a name of a soldier, sailor or airman who had made the ultimate sacrifice,” Gus explained. “We did some research so we could tell their story. I also left a copy of my findings at the cenotaph on Anzac morning so anyone could read it.

“Here is the young gentleman I chose: Gilbert John Chapman (Jesse) 1897 - 1918,15490 Lance Corporal, C Company 15th Reinforcements, 2nd (South Canterbury) Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force.

Jesse Gilbert John Chapman was born on the 5th of April 1887 to Neave and Mary Chapman of Hororata. Gilbert (as he preferred to be known) was

educated at Hororata School before taking up a career in farming. First as a farm hand, then as a contract farmer working alongside his brother.

Gilbert enlisted for the army on April 4th 1916, the day before his 29th birthday. On June 20th 1916, Gilbert married his sweetheart, 22-year-old Amelia Miller Phillips, Phillips formerly of Kurow. The couple married on Amelia's mother's property in Glenroy just three days before Amelia's 23rd birthday. Gilbert shipped out for France on July 26th leaving his pregnant wife and unborn daughter behind.

Their daughter Ella, Ella was born on December 20th, 1916 and never met her Father.

Gilbert and the rest of the 15th Reinforcements arrived in Devonport, England onboard the Waitemata on October 3rd, 1916. He underwent some rapid training at Sling Camp on the Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, before leaving for France on the October 20th. After further training, he was posted to the 2nd Battalion Canterbury Regiment in Estaires on November 11th.

Gilbert was thrust into sporadic

trench battles as the 2nd Battalion relieved other Commonwealth units along the line. As 1916 turned into 1917, along with holding the line, relieving units and in turn being relieved, the New Zealand Division began training for a big offensive. On June 7th, 1917, Canterbury regiment was thrust into the battle for Messines village. A short but bloody seven-day battle that saw the New Zealand Division receive 4,978 casualties. Just one month later the Kiwis were to see one of the bloodiest campaigns in its military history.

The second battle of Ypres, or as it is commonly known, the Battle of Passchendaele. By its end, New Zealand saw over 18,000 of its soldiers either killed or wounded. In the midst of the Passchendaele campaign, Gilbert was promoted to Lance Corporal on October 29th, 1917 shortly after returning from a ‘rest camp’.

After the New Zealanders were withdrawn from Ypres on February 23rd, 1918 the 2nd Canterbury went into intense musketry training.

On February 29th Gilbert was detached to serve with the HeadQuarters 2nd New Zealand Rifle Brigade. It is unknown why he was there, but we can speculate he was either undergoing specific training, or helping to train reinforcements.

He stayed with Headquarters until April 22nd, 1918 when he returned to the 2nd Canterbury after being released from the No 3 NZ Field Ambulance for a case of influenza. During his time in France Gilbert also spent time at the No 76 Field Ambulance for a severe case of hives in July of 1917.

In the final months of 1918, and bolstered by the Arrival of American troops, the Allied command began to plan its last big offensive of the War. On August 8th the allied armies started the big offensive with a very successful attack on the

German positions east of Amiens and by the 13th had advanced a staggering twelve miles. On August 24th the 1st and 2nd Canterbury battalions were tasked with taking the town of Bapaume. Over the next few days, the New Zealanders advanced steadily taking their objectives and forcing the Germans to withdraw. It was on August 28th, while advancing into Bapaume township, that Gilbert was severely wounded and evacuated to an advanced dressing station of the No 3 NZ Field Ambulance. Unfortunately due to the severity of his injuries, Gilbert passed away the next day. He was 31 years old.

Gilbert Chapman is buried in the Achiet-le-Grand Communal (Allied and German) Cemetery Extension in Pas-de-Calais France.

“Haylee McDonald had great fun decorating our fence in Darfield for Anzac day,” reported her mum Lisa. The beautiful fence not only has poppies, but also has pictures and text.

He was a veteran of the 3rd NZ Rifle Brigade. Amelia lived a long life, dying on the November 16th, 1981 at the age of 88.

Gilbert and Amelia’s Daughter Ella lived until her 86th year and died on July 26th, 2002.

Gilbert John Chapman is remembered on the Hororata cenotaph alongside sixteen other local men that made the ultimate sacrifice in the Great war 1914-1918 and seven men from World War Two. Lest we Forget.
