On Friday, April 3rd Emma Wooding’s daughters Larisa (aged 7) and Chloe (aged 4) took to streets in West Melton dressed as a Clown and Bat Girl. The idea came about after Emma hear a suggestion to initiate ‘Costume Day Friday’ in the township. “The girls put smiles on the faces of those who were out and about enjoying some time away from the house,” Emma commented. “This week I am hoping more children get dressed up and maybe the theme could be Easter,” she said. “I was also thinking it would be great to change the current ‘Bear Hunt’ to an ‘Easter Hunt’ by putting pictures of Easter eggs, or bunnies, on windows instead of bears. Just a thought to spread some Easter cheer,” Emma smiled. “I’m looking forward to seeing all the Easter bunnies on the streets next week,” she concluded.

While there will be no national Anzac Day commemorative services, there will be an act of remembrance on behalf of the people of New Zealand at the National War Memorial. This will be undertaken jointly by the Chief of Defence Force, Air Marshal Kevin Short, Short and the President of the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services’ Association, Mr B.J. Clark. This will not be open to the public or media but will be recorded for

As we go into week three of a hoped-for maximum of four weeks in lockdown, it’s easy to become complacent and slacken-off the carefully followed hygiene practices and distance measures undertaken religiously in weeks one and two. A dangerous thing to do at this stage of the proceedings. The success of these unprecedented measures is dependent on the rules being followed to the letter - or it will have been all in vain. People’s lives and livelihoods have been lost and turned upside down; so these necessary steps to curb the pandemic in New Zealand will only be successful if everyone plays the game. What recovery will look like - no one can speculate. However one thing everyone agrees on, is that it’s likely to be grim, some businesses won’t be able to get underway again, while others will try to swim, before floundering and drowning. I’d like to think that the Malvern News and its partner the Rolleston News will survive. I’d like to think the community would miss them if they go permanently. However to survive, both papers are going

to need a huge surge in advertising revenue to keep them afloat. It’s not just us that will need the support of the community and New Zealand as a whole. All my family are selfemployed - my daughter and son-in-law are in the ski industry - on any given season the main worry is whether there’ll be enough snow. This year it’s whether the mountains will even open and if they do will there be enough patronage for their business to recover without the volume of tourists previously seen. My son and daughter-in-law own two large resorts in Vanuatu - they are in New Zealand currently and their business has just ceased overnight - while their outgoing costs continue (Vanuatu has also just been hit by a tropical cyclone causing even more angst). All these scenarios and many, many more will need to be sorted and unravelled when we come out of this. In the meantime week three is upon us and while it might be tempting to loll about in your PJ’s, having a wine for morning tea - sticking to a pre-lockdown routine is probably a wiser option. Shower when you

usually used to, dress as if you’re heading to work (within reason obviously!) and start your work-from-home regime at around the same time as you would normally. While I was under the illusion that the dog would love to have its human home all the time - apparently this isn’t actually the case. Dogs apparently can get stressed by a change in their routines and crave some space from those they share their lives with. When this is all over - what are the first things you’ll do? Seeing my family is top of the list - with hugs! Followed pretty jolly closely by hair and nails’ appointments, if I can get them (and afford to pay for them!). Then maybe a gathering of friends, a sharing of stories, a glossing over of the jobs lost, and the money spent, while basking in the glow of the knowledge that we’re all alive and together. Now in week three of lockdown I have nothing but praise and thanks to offer our community for the way they have risen to the challenges presented in these exceptional times. Each day I hear more stories of how individuals, community groups, emergency services, supermarkets and many others are pulling out all the stops with numerous acts of generosity, ingenuity and resilience. From the Council’s perspective we are doing everything within our power to keep you safe and to keep the essential services that you rely on in place. Our Emergency Operations Centre is staffed 24/7 and our Council staff have now settled in a working-from-home routine and I spend countless hours meeting colleagues in video conferencing. Business as usual continues, where it can, with building consents being processed and planning continuing. Our current focus is on the near future and I hope to have news for you soon about how we can assist people who may struggle to pay their rates. As chair of the Canterbury Mayoral Forum I am working with other mayors with an eye on the longer term. By working together we hope to work out the best way to respond to the inevitable challenges that will face our hard-pressed, local businesses. We are also looking at how the lack of international travel will affect tourism and the many farmers who rely heavily on overseas workers to support their industry. There are tough times ahead, as a Council we are doing what we can but we are always open to hearing how we can do better. That’s why this week I met ‘virtually’ with leaders from over forty community organisations to understand your needs and communicate what your Council are doing. I also want to hear from you, so please contact your Councillors if you have something to say and I will hear your views in our weekly Council meetings. And don’t forget that you can watch these meetings live on the Council’s Facebook page at 1pm Wednesdays. Like you, I am in my bubble which includes Liz, Liz Elliott and my parents, we will be staying in and staying local, this Easter and I encourage you to do the same. If you know somebody who is alone through this, please reach out in a safe way.

Selwyn wellwell-placed to get through this crisis: For me, Easter has always been an opportunity to spend time with my family. This Easter, with the exception of essential workers, most families in Selwyn will already have spent a great deal more time together over the past few weeks than usual, which can bring with it challenges. While we are all spending more time with the people in our immediate bubbles, we are however missing seeing our extended family members and friends. In terms of bubbles, the Government has recently provided further clarification around this that may be helpful to some members of our communities. For children in shared custody arrangements, these should continue, with the children moving between the two households as long as they are within the same region. Meanwhile, people who live alone can join up with another person living alone, or with a small household for support. You must live in the same neighbourhood and not interact with anyone else. As we adapt to the new normal, we are seeing all around us (albeit from a distance) the best of human nature. People giving each other a wide berth on walks is now a sign of courtesy and care, rather than rudeness. Neighbours and family members are making sure our older folk have the supplies they need. We are using technology to connect through video meetings and virtual catch-ups with our friends, to do online work-outs and engage in online learning in a way we have never done before. And our internet and communications systems are generally holding up well, further reinforcing the value of our ultra-fast broadband programme. Despite Parliament not operating normally we have developed what I believe is an effective system in the form of the Epidemic Response Committee which is meeting remotely to review the Government’s health and economic response to Covid-19. The ability for the Opposition to ask questions of the Government and the opportunity for both Opposition MPs and Government Ministers to hear from experts is critical to ensuring New Zealand is responding in the best way we can to this crisis. The meetings of the Epidemic Response Committee are accessible to the public via broadcast on Parliament TV, or livestream on the New Zealand Parliament website and Facebook Page. Although there have been some shortcomings in the distribution of flu vaccines and PPE, overall our health system appears to be moving at pace to gear up its capacity to manage the impacts of this virus. While I do not underestimate the size of the challenges ahead of us I have confidence in our health system here in Canterbury and the effectiveness of our community networks to get us through this. I also have confidence in the resilience and coping abilities of our Selwyn communities, businesses and families. We have dealt with the Canterbury earthquakes, droughts and fires and we will deal with this crisis. If you need help, seek it early and if you do not know where to go for help, please get in touch.

The COVID-19 lockdown means that people are physically isolated at a level never seen before in New Zealand. St John wants to let people know that it is well positioned to help reduce any feelings of loneliness and isolation at home with its free Caring Caller service, connecting

people who need a friend with people who have time to listen and chat on the phone. The goal of the COVID-19 lockdown is to limit the spread of the virus, but not to limit your community connection. While we may not be able to visit each other and meet face to face, we

need to be able to support each other and stay in touch. St John Director of Community Health Services Sarah Manley said St John has moved to extend the free Caring Caller service in order to provide support to people who might be feeling a bit lonely during

lockdown, or just need to check in with someone. “Due to COVID-19 we have had to suspend some of our Community Programmes such as Friends of the Emergency Department, Community Carers and Pet Therapy, and many of these valuable volunteers are

The country is now into its third week of the Covid-19 lockdown. A big thanks to all the essential services who have been operating such as supermarkets, pharmacies, medical centres etc who have been allowed to continue operating to service the community in their food and health needs. For businesses who are not essential services, it is the Government’s requirement that they cannot trade, unless they have a specific certificate from the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment allowing them to do so. Police around the country have been called to do compliance checks on some businesses where the public have raised concerns that they are not essential services and still operating. Locally the whole community seems to have been taking the Covid-19 lockdown seriously and staying in their respective bubbles. A small handful of youths have been spoken to over the weekend and reminded of the lockdown and bubble

Government requirements. Keep safe and please do keep in touch with the elderly folk in our community. The New Zealand Government has a helpful website for the public with useful information about the lockdown and covid19 virus. Please be extra careful at this time of computer and telephone scams. Several local folk have been caught out in

recent years after purchasing items off the Facebook site and sending money for items which do not arrive. The Police advice is if you elect to purchase an item off Facebook from someone you do not know, DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK. Please be aware that the wild deer are well into the ROAR (mating season) now. With hunters not being allowed in the hills during the lockdown, please watch out for wild deer potentially crossing rural roads, particularly at dawn, dusk and during darkness. They can be a real danger when they run out on to roads in front of vehicles. Keep safe and keep up the good work in adhering to the country’s Government enforced lockdown procedures to control the spread of covid-19.

FLU VACCINATIONS Flu vaccination supplies are in high demand. Patients must please phone for an appointment. We have started immunising high risk patients and staff. We plan to provide this outside the Darfield Medical Centre. Please arrive early for your appointment and wait near the entrance. We also ask patients to please remove all unnecessary clothing in advance, to facilitate a ‘standup visit’ with the doctor or nurse. When an injection eg. flu jab is expected, or blood needs to be done, it will be useful to dress so that an arm, or shoulder, can easily be exposed in public. Any additional family members, or helpers, must remain outside the building, and in your car. This is to ensure that we can continue to provide help and support for the community in this very trying time, thank you for your patience. A message to the over 70’s. We know many of you are fit and healthy and living active lives, but the older we are, the less our immune system is able to fight off this virus and we have seen from overseas that older people are at more risk of serious complications. Please heed advice to stay at home once you have had your Flu Vaccination!

Our community is in good hands. Thankyou to all concerned,” they concluded.

Members of the Darfield Youth Group would normally be gearing up and packing their bags, organising tents and loading into vehicles to head over to Spencer Park for five days of camp over Easter weekend. They would be joined by a few thousand other teens and their youth group leaders from around the South Island. This year things are different, for everyone. Lockdown has changed people’s daily rhythms, and the ability to celebrate important occasions. “So this year Camp will look different too and the Easter Camp Team have been working hard to provide some of our camp experience to everyone, in their homes,” commented a spokesperson for the Darfield Baptist Youth Group. “The exciting part about all of this is that, this year anyone that wants to, can attend Easter Camp. Whether you are a teen or not, whether you registered

for Camp, or not. All you have to do is follow Easter Camp on our social media platforms,” they added. Easter Camp will be going live on both Instagram and Facebook platforms over three days during Easter weekend. There will be 11am and 7pm sessions. The sessions will each have different content, speakers etc; the evening session won't just be a repeat of the morning one. “Because of the last minute nature of putting this all together for us, there are new updates happening all the time,

so keep an eye on social media for all the latest news.” The Darfield Youth Group are still finding ways to connect and keep in touch during lock down. R u bbi s h a n d r e c y c l in g collections in Selwyn are continuing as normal during the Level 4 Alert period, however there will be changes to the processing of recycling. Recycling will be collected as normal, however it will temporarily be taken to Pines Resource Recovery Park for disposal as general waste. Council’s kerbside recycling processing partner EcoCentral Ltd have had to temporarily pause operations because of the high risk of COVID-19 contamination for staff sorting the recycling at the regional sorting facility in Christchurch. Because of the volume of recycling coming in every week the Council and EcoCentral do not have the space to safely store it for sorting later. In addition, many offshore recycling plants are closing or suspending operations because of the pandemic, meaning there are no outlets for the materials. Council Solid Waste Manager Andrew Boyd said the decision has not been taken lightly.

“We’re really disappointed that this step has had to be taken. We’re in the same position that many other areas of the country find themselves in of having to make this temporary change.” Despite the change to the way recycling is handled in the interim, the collection process will not change, and people should keep sorting recycling, and putting out their bins as normal. “It’s really important that you continue to sort your recycling and put it out in the yellow bin as normal. We’ll still be collecting it from the kerbside and we will restart the processing of recyclables as soon as possible. So it’s important to be ready and help us limit the amount of recycling going to landfill when we are able to start recycling again.” Our organics kerbside collection and processing is continuing as normal. What can people do? Please continue to separate your recyclables from your

general waste. This is only a temporary situation and we don’t want people losing their good recycling skills for when processing recommences! Use paper and cardboard in your fireplace if you have one, or consider home composting these. If people are considering stockpiling any recycling, please ensure it is clean first (to avoid odour and vermin). For plastics, the suggestion is to only keep clean plastics of grades 1, 2 and 5 - these have the best long term options for recycling.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern made the announcement on Monday aLernoon at her daily press conference. She said the Easter Bunny and one of his counterparts, the Tooth Fairy, have been given the all clear from the government to keep working during level four lockdown. "You'll be pleased to know that we do consider both the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny to be essen al workers." However, the lockdown restric ons and busy me of year might make it difficult for him to visit everyone around the country. "I say to the children of New Zealand, if the Easter Bunny doesn't make it to your household, then we have to understand that it's a bit difficult at the moment. "The Easter Bunny might not get everywhere this year," she said. The PM encouraged everyone who had been contribu ng to local teddy bear hunts to change their theme by drawing an Easter egg on the window. "Create your own Easter hunt for the children in your neighbourhood." On Monday night, she posted a template Easter egg on her Instagram for children to colour in and decorate (see next page). In a "message for the kids of New Zealand", she encouraged children to take part in the newly-Christened Big New Zealand Easter Egg Hunt by designing or colouring in an egg and puQng it in the window.

very clean. If the tap water is heavily chlorinated, then I’d recommend using demineralised water. All modern cooling systems are ‘closed’ and recycle coolant in to, and out of, the reservoir. If the cooling system requires more than one cup, then it may have an issue and you should get it checked, when you are able. You can also top up the window washer bottle. Use only clean water and proper washer additive. Do not use dish drops or car wash in the reservoir. This is one of our most common repairs in the workshop; cleaning out the slime from the reservoir made by detergent! The slime blocks the washer squirter nozzles, and damages the washer pump. If you have slime in the reservoir you may be able to flush it out with a garden hose shoved in the filler neck and turned on for a few minutes, otherwise it can be a major operation to physically remove and scrub out. Until next week when we’re hopefully all out of lockdown, start up your car once or twice a week and let it idle for fifteen minutes in a well-ventilated area; this will keep your battery topped up. Local young, up and coming, mountain biker Ethan Rose has been selected by the Inspire Foundation for a grant to help with the cost of his World Championship campaign. The Inspire Foundation recognises extraordinary young individuals who have the potential and desire to achieve excellence in their chosen field and reward them in such a way as to help them try and achieve their dream. Applicants must be aged between fifteen and twenty three years of age and be resident in Canterbury, or Marlborough, for at least three years. They must be New Zealand citizens and have

demonstrated extraordinary ability or potential in any areas of Arts, IT, Design, Music, Science, Research, Education, Sport or Community Service. “However it is unlikely Ethan will receive any funding as the World Champs were to be held in Germany on June 28th and have been postponed and most likely cancelled,” commented Ethan’s Dad, Adam Heard. Heard Ethan added, “it's great to be recognised by the Inspire Foundation, it means a lot to get support from others. “It's not the year I had planned for,” he said, “and it looks to have come to an end much earlier than I expected. But the

Covid-19 virus is a big concern for New Zealand and the rest of the world,” Ethan said. “As disappointed as I am, it is only sport and it can wait,” he explained. Ethan recently travelled to America to start competing in the Mountain Bike Junior World Series, unfortunately this was cut short however he did manage to get one race in before coming home. Ethan raced the short track XC (cross-country) race two days before the main XCO (crosscountry Olympics) event in California. He won, beating some very highly ranked second year U19’s riders; forging a great start to his international racing. After this outstanding result Ethan was understandably

looking forward to the main event, but unfortunately this was cancelled at 11pm the night before the race. Ethan said, “I was gutted to find out it had been cancelled when I awoke on race day, I was really looking forward to it. After my win two days before, I know I was in with a shot of taking it, as the longer race is my

stronger event,” he said. “But on the plus side I now know I've got good speed against some of the top guys in my sport and it's still only my first year as an U19,” Ethan said. “It's given me something to focus on and train hard for. The main priority is that everyone stays safe out there now,” he concluded.

Darfield Preschool and Nursery have taken steps to continue supportive relationships with tamariki and their whanau during the lockdown period as a result of the Covid-19 virus. Educa is our online learning platform where kaiako post learning stories and parents can share learning from home too. To allow our tamariki and their parents to still feel a part of our community Preschool we have planned and implemented online mat times, experiences and tips for coping with time in lockdown. We have been posting these on Educa each day for everyone to enjoy. A variety of songs, board stories, books, science experiments, exercises, as well as kaiako sharing what they have been up to during this time. We have also invited our tamariki to share their fun experiences from home and our parents have posted them on Educa too. those who greet him as Messiah; and they expect their Messiah to be a conquering king. It ends with Jesus in complete isolation. He hasn’t been the Messiah they were hoping for. They turn on him. Those who sung ‘Hosanna’ one day shout ‘Crucify’ the next. The disciples run for their lives. When Jesus is hauled up on the cross, only a few of the women who were part of his wider band of followers are still there to be with him. They are forced to keep their distance. This Holy Week we are going to have to follow Jesus in his isolation. All that pious talk about walking the way of the cross is going to become real. We will find out what being a Christian looks like when the trappings of church are removed for a while. There will be many ways of keeping this Easter weekend. The local churches across Malvern will have a variety of ways of offering worship via emails, Facebook, Zoom, livestreaming or YouTube.
