THINK ABOUT IT If you were informed that there was a killer on the streets, randomly targe ng innocent people…… But you didn’t know where they were, you couldn’t see them from your window, but you knew they were there. Would you nip out? Would you let your kids out the door? Do you see where I’m going with this?

Maggie McConnochie from West Melton is ten years old and started learning the chanter from Liz Drury when she was eight before progressing to the bagpipes just before she turned nine. She is currently the youngest piper in the St Andrew’s College B Band where her tutor is Graeme Bryce. Bryce Maggie and her family have no piping background personally, but Maggie fell in love with the bagpipe sound when she was about three after a friend serenaded her. From the age of six she began asking when she could start learning to play. “She is passionate about piping playing and practicing a lot,” reported her mum Delwyn. Delwyn “Like a lot of her band friends she is getting the opportunity to take part in a virtual solo competition in early April which is hosted in Scotland, so is working toward that at the moment,” Delwyn said. “We have good friends and neighbours in our community that are front line workers and Maggie understands the risk they are taking to keep us safe,” she

commented. “Maggie is lucky that our neighbours like the pipes and they are quite used to hearing her practice from our deck,” Delwyn added. “During isolation she has been working hard on her school work but also getting lots of time to play her chanter and pipes and staying in touch with friends using technology which has been fun for her.” Delwyn explained. “Maggie is going to play every night at 5.55pm as part of the initiative in West Melton to honour front line workers by making noise. She is also keen to play on Kirran Island in Preston Downs at 6am on ANZAC day given we can’t attend a formal service. If any other pipers in walking distance are keen I am sure it would be appropriate to join in, as there will be plenty of space to socially distance,” Delwyn concluded. As well as her piping Maggie also plays hockey, enjoys spending time with friends and riding her bike - although for now some of those things have had to be put on hold.
