Weekly Newspaper Business Cards Photocopying Lamina ng Binding Typese ng If it’s newsworthy and you know about it, we’d like to know too!
As we hunker down in these most peculiar of circumstances, and commit ourselves to a period of intense social distancing, it’s an opportunity to really assess priorities. Seriously - what we are all being asked to do is bloody inconvenient, it’s going to cost us a heap of money, and many businesses will go bust; but don’t do it, and we may well die! I am appalled by some of the behaviour exhibited at supermarkets - can those behaving badly neither hear, nor understand? There’s enough damn food to go round, just don’t hoard the stuff. Please support our local businesses wherever possible now, if they’re open, but definitely after this is over, or believe me they just will not survive! While social distancing really isn’t the New Zealand way - in the great scheme of things it’s a small price to pay to stay alive. Don’t sweat the petty (or is that don’t pet the sweaty?); it’s the same for everyone and when this is over, and it will be, I think we will all be kinder, less judgmental and look out for those around us. We’ll certainly enjoy a hug or two! For those black-humourists that insist this is natural selection and getting rid of the elderly is the way to go - I’ve got news for you, this old person isn’t ready to leave yet! We’re assuming the community would like to see the Malvern News continue, but right here, right now, we’re in the same boat as many other small businesses - our continuance is on very, very shaky ground.
Community support is going to be the key here, but for now we’re just trying to do our best and who knows what the future holds. The Jans (Jan Jan Crossley and Jan Thomas) Thomas have owned the News since 2002, on our staff are Chevonn Walker, Walker who’s been with us for five years and knows the job backwards, Lois Haskett who has also been with us for many years and undertaken a variety of roles, and relative newcomer Lucinda Jarvis. Jarvis We are all working from home currently, but can only produce an online version of the paper, until this is over. However ongoing business costs continue and so the always appreciated, and much valued, support of our advertisers is critical to avoid shutting our doors, not just for now, but for good.
I recall my parents telling me about living through WWII in Manchester, England. Both were born during the first world war lived through the depression, before meeting and marrying after the second world war. The privations they described make the current situation look like a walk in the park! Getting life in perspective, counting your blessings - roof over your head, clothes on your back and food on the table (that’s if there was any left after the food hoarders struck!) - can go a long way toward coping with this current situation. For those with children home from school remember that at the end of all this it’s their mental health that will be way more important than their academic skills. How they felt during this time will stay with
them, long after the memory of what they did during these weeks, is gone. In the meantime because events have been called off, open days have been cancelled, schools are closed and every other thing has been postponed - we’re going to be very short of editorial for the News. We’d love to hear from you - about how you’re coping with this social distancing, and inhouse quarantining - especially anything humourous! All the best - take care - please, please abide by the distancing rules and we’ll all come through this - some a little worse for wear - but hopefully all alive nevertheless!
