Sadly, and only a>er much discussion, the Malvern A & P Associa?on have had to make the unprecedented (other than for war) decision to cancel the community’s much loved Malvern A & P Show, which was to have been held on March 28th at Sheffield.

The trickle-down effect of this decision on small businesses and par?cipa?ng individuals is huge and the News, knowing how much ?me we put into the intended forthcoming Show feature, can sympathise. But for those volunteers that have expended countless hours; planning, organising and arranging this event, its cancella?on is devasta?ng.

However if this absolutely ghastly and life-threatening pandemic is to be controlled, we all know this was the right decision for the commi'ee to come to - much as we don’t like it!

We can now only hope that next year will see the Show again take its rightful place WEST MELTON in the community calendar and that locals will do whatever they can to support it.

At the recent monthly Friends of Darfield Hospital meeting, held on Wednesday, March 11th, the Friends received a very generous donation of $2,500 from John Winchester, representing the organisers of the Selwyn Motor Fest.

The Motor Fest took place on November 25th last year, and is advertised as ‘Selwyn's Greatest Car Show and Family Day’. A twelve hectare site opposite Rolleston College is used on the day. There was an extensive display of cars, trucks, motorcycles and farm vehicles at the event, as well as live entertainment, stalls and food vendors. There were also games to amuse the children, and other activities (with prizes for some) which included auctions and raffles. All profits raised are donated to a number of local Selwyn charities and organisations.

As one of the beneficiaries of last year's event, The Friends of Darfield Hospital are most

grateful to John and his colleagues for the outstanding donation they received. The funds will be used to enhance the comfort, care and treatment

of the patients, as well as making the hospital a pleasant venue for staff and visitors.

The Hororata Primary School 150th Jubilee celebrations, planned for this weekend, March 20th - 22nd 2020, have been postponed due to the developing situation with COVID19. Hororata Primary opened in 1870 and is one of the few schools in Canterbury who is due to celebrate their 150th milestone.

“We still hope to hold the Jubilee within 2020, the School’s 150th year, however, we are unable to set an actual date due to the evolving nature of this virus,” said the committee Chair Rod Oliver.

feel this a necessary precaution.

“The committee met Sunday afternoon and the decision to postpone was unanimous. The committee has been working towards this event for the past two years and while it is disappointing, it is the right decision for our community.

“We felt postponing the event was necessary to protect our community and to play our part in the national response to minimise the effect of this virus.

At the rate this situation is escalating the committee felt we needed to make this decision now, rather than wait for further directives from the Government.

By making the announcement now we hope this gives people time to change their travel arrangements.

“We are a strong, caring community and I am sure everyone will support the committee with this difficult decision,” Rod concluded.

To the Editors: We enjoy walking around the area daily and make a point of carrying a bag to collect trash left after weekend ‘parties’. The Pearson Reserve is obviously a popular spot for gatherings if the rubbish in it, is any indication.

A warning to those with small children or running their dogs, an area under the trees just west of the duck pond in the Darfield Recreation Reserve is littered with broken glass, as it was obviously entertaining to smash bottles on trees!

World Kidney Day was on March 12th this year. The Day continues to raise awareness of the increasing burden of kidney diseases worldwide and to strive for kidney health for everyone, everywhere. Kidney disease is a non-communicable disease and currently affects around 850 million people worldwide. One in ten adults has chronic kidney disease (CKD). The global burden of CKD is increasing, and is projected to become the fifth most common cause of years of life lost globally by 2040.

CKD is a progressive loss in kidney function over a period of months or years. Kidneys have about a million tiny filters, called nephrons. If these nephrons are damaged, they stop working.

For a while, healthy nephrons can take on the extra work. But if the damage continues, more and more nephrons shut down.

After a certain point, the nephrons that are left cannot filter blood well enough to keep healthy.

When kidney function falls below a certain point, it is called kidney failure and affects the

whole body. Untreated kidney failure can be life-threatening.

Local West Melton girl Maddie Collins is raising awareness of Organ Donation by selling tins of sticking plasters to try and encourage people to talk about the subject of donation. Maddie

and her family are passionate about spreading awareness as Maddie is needing another kidney transplant.

“Did you know it’s your family that makes the decision concerning donation, regardless of what you have on your driver’s licence,” Maddie’s mum Sarah Collins explained. “If you haven't let your family know your wishes (if you wish to donate), they can say no,” Sarah said.

Textures, colours and mediums are brought together at Te Huanui’s April exhibition, ‘Across the Board’. Featuring paintings by Sue Currie, Currie pottery

by David Atkinson and pen and ink drawings by Mark Duggan, Duggan there is an exciting variety of artwork showing.

Sue Currie has a background in graphic design, with her paintings originating during her time living in Sydney. Her colourful paintings, often in warm hues, are contemporary in style and full of life, through her careful use of colour and time given to experiment within her chosen mediums of acrylic, oil and watercolours. Sue exhibits regularly in the South Island of New Zealand and is a member of art societies. She is the recipient of numerous awards, with paintings in collections in New Zealand and overseas.

Mark Duggan’s love for the visual arts drew him to a career in draughting, mixing graphics with precision, working in the last few years of what was to be the permanence of pen and ink in the profession. Mark’s focus is centred on pen and ink, often combined with watercolour. His compositions are frequently without backgrounds, to isolate viewers and connect them to the subject matter - often birds.

Mark’s work is held in collections nationally and internationally and he exhibits throughout Canterbury on a regular basis.

David Atkinson’s pottery career began while he was a primary teacher, taking weekend classes in Oamaru with an enthusiastic group of classmates. He aims to create pots with interesting forms and colourful decorative glazes,

More than six hundred entries from over one hundred breweries and cidermakers from around the world competed for top honours at the New World Beer and Cider Awards, which were held in Wellington on March 11th and 12th.

Thirteen pallets of beer, cider, glasses and other equipment were trucked into Sky Stadium for the event. The sixteen strong stewarding team set up over 5,100 bottles in their correct positions in a single day and poured well over 3,000 glasses of beer and cider over the two judging days, while dedicated glass-washers kept the 1,600

Spiegelau glasses clean. Wearing perfume, enjoying a garlic-filled meal the night before, and even bringing a coffee into the room was off-limits to ensure strong scents didn’t interfere with the judges’ senses.

Amongst the twenty five experienced and knowledgeable judges was local Caleb DeFrees of Dunsandel’s, Gladfield Malt.

Caleb is the Production Manager at Gladfield, where he manages the production staff and day-today operations of the malthouse. This is Caleb’s second year, judging at the Awards. His expertise combines a culinary background, including training at

the Culinary Institute of America, a bachelor’s degree in Food Science from Cornell University and over eight years’ experience in the New York restaurant scene, with a diploma in Brewing Modules through the Institute of Brewing and Distilling. “I sort of fell into the beer industry a little bit. I started out homebrewing and then when I moved to New Zealand in 2012 I started working for a malting factory. My background is in food science, so there’s naturally a really nice connection,” he explained.

Caleb regularly judges beer competitions both in New Zealand and internationally.

“Each entry was blind judged and assessed on its qualities using a collaborative approach.

You sit at judging table with four or five other judges, everyone tastes the entry, we all took notes and then collectively decided on the score,” Caleb commented.

“The broad range of experience a t t he ta ble , a nd t he collaborative judging process is really useful in helping pick up different flavour profiles we might not be used t o tasting. When we all put our heads together and really pick apart the beer we can be sure it’s being judged at the highest standard,” he added.

“Overall, the key thing we are judging on is drinkability and this comes down to how well the beer is balanced. The quality of what I have tasted so far has been exceptional, I’ve particular enjoyed the range of Pale Ales and Lagers and I am really looking forward to seeing who makes the Top 30 when results are announced later in the year,” he said enthusiastically.

It's an increasingly common sight - the car in front weaving erratically across the lane and alternately speeding up and slowing down. Your first thought may be that the driver is drunk but when you eventually get alongside, or past, them, you see they have a phone glued to their ear, or are busy staring down at the phone texting or emailing. It's very dangerous behaviour, not only to the driver, but also to passengers and other motorists as well.

Unfortunately, irresponsible phone use behind the wheel has become an epidemic. According to New Zealand Transport Association statistics, mobile p h o n e s or ot h e r t e le communications devices were a contributing factor in forty deaths, 240 serious injuries and 1187 minor injuries in 2019.

Research has shown that driving while talking on a hand-held mobile can be as dangerous as driving at the legal blood/alcohol limit - and it can increase the risk of being involved in a crash by 400%. Even more dangerous than talking is texting, or emailing. To read messages you have to take your eyes off the road and change your long distance driving focus to a close focus. It means you're driving blind for however long it takes to read the message, or key in a phone number.

There are lots of different distractions that drivers can face - from a bee in the car, to the children playing up. Using a cell phone is a distraction that drivers have control over - and a choice between being a safe, or unsafe, driver. If you're involved

It is illegal for drivers to use a hand-held mobile phone while driving. The Road User Rule states that drivers cannot use a mobile phone: to make, receive, or terminate a telephone call; to create, send, or read a text message or email; to create, send, or view a video message; to communicate in a similar way in any other way.

Breaching the ban incurs an $80 fine and twenty demerit points.

The ba n includes t elecommunications devices such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), but excludes two-way radios. However, a driver may, while driving a vehicle, use a mobile phone provided the mobile phone: Does not require the driver to hold, or physically manipulate it to make, receive, or terminate the call (e.g. Blue Tooth technology); is secured in a mounting fixed to the vehicle and the driver manipulates the phone infrequently and briefly (e.g. hands-free kits).

In addition, the Rule exempts drivers who make a 111 or *555 call provided it is unsafe or impracticable for the driver to stop and park the vehicle to make the call; or if the vehicle has stopped for a reason other We now have our own

than the normal starting and stopping of vehicles in a flow of traffic.

As the road toll jumps, calls are mounting for a review of the punishment handed to motorists who break the driver cellphone ban.

The number of people caught using cellphones while driving now outnumbers those caught drink-driving, with 27,681 people flouting the cellphone law in the twelve months to June, compared with 24,858 caught drink-driving.

Please respect yourself, your family and other road users and make the pledge and help spread awareness of the dangers of distracted driving by taking the pledge to put down your phone while driving

On Monday 9th and Tuesday March 10th the Glenroy Collie Club held its centennial trials.

These took place at Fighting Hill and Snowdon Stations on the Snowdon Road in the Coleridge Basin. The event was extremely well attended with over a hundred competitors - very fitting for a centennial trial some travelling large distances to take part. It was good to see so many past members returning to compete in the trials. A few also entered the special Hazlett Challenge Double event, for former and present Club members. This involved two competitors each with one dog, the winner being the pair with the highest aggregate over the four courses.

by Snowdon and Lake Coleridge Stations and played ball more

often than not, which enabled good competition all round.

Apart from the dog trial competitions there was also the musterers race, which this year was won in record time. The bark up was also keenly contested and of course there was much chat with old and new friends, along with lots of stories.

These trials were a testament to the enduring nature of dog trialling due in no small part to the support the wider community continues to offer.

Sponsors are also an integral part of the ongoing success of the trials. With the number of younger competitors involved there is no reason to suppose that the dog trials will not carry on for another century!

We ha d a sup er d ay at the Canterbury Interschools Showjumping and Showhunter Championships in February at McLean’s Island. The weather was perfect and, of course, so were our three wonderful teams of riders! We had a super run in the Showhunter with Katherine Hadler winning the 80cm class and Charlotte Thomas coming second in the 95cm class. Katie

Doncliff and Mikayla Wycliffe also had terrific rounds, giving Darfield the second place overall. The Showjumping rounds saw some super performances. Ella van der Wilt had a superb win in the very large 80cm class. Charlotte Thomas had two superb rounds gaining a second and fourth place, with her brother Daniel having a superb day at his first

My stand-outs for the day were the two smallest riders on the smallest ponies, jumping their hearts out in the largest class; Millie Wilson and Katie Doncliff. Millie had a fifth place in one of the classes, and seeing these two jump was lovely to watch. Mikayla Wycliffe had two good rounds on her stunning gelding, ‘NS Hey Mickey’, with an eighth place.

Although we did not get a significant placing in the Showjumping, I am so proud of how far our riders have come, how well they are preparing their horses and ponies, and how dedicated they are to their sport. Congratulations to all our riders! Also, a special thankyou to Sharron Rayne for all her help on the day. We certainly couldn’t do this sport without the tremendous support of parents, grandparents and friends.

On Sunday March 15th, players from the Darfield Rugby Football Club attended the All Girls’ Quick Rip, and Tackle Rugby Series at Woodend Rugby Football Club’s, Gladstone Park. The event was organised by Bridget Johnstone from Canterbury Rugby Football Union (CRFU) and her coaching team.

All the players attended a skill

based training session for half an hour, with the Tackle teams running tackle skills and the Quick Rip (non contact) teams running catch and pass training sessions. The girls were coached by members of the CRFU community coaching team as well as some of the amazing players from many of the CRFU Women’s teams, which included some of the Farrah Palmer Cup

players and Black Fern players.

The teams then played a couple of games using official referees.

“It was an amazing sight seeing so many girls coming along to enjoy playing rugby together,” commented a spokesperson.

Between February 23rd and 29th Piper competed in the Outdoor Nationals (fifty metres), held in Tokoroa.

Shooters who are affiliated with Target Shooting New Zealand are able to compete in this seven day event which is a combination of prone, and three position (kneeling, prone, standing).

“We started the week with three position (forty shots in each position) and I was placed fourth in the Women's Division and second in the Junior Women's,” Piper said. “In the graded prone matches (there are two) I only shot averagely.

The conditions weren't flash; really hot and with a mirage effect,” Piper reported.

“The women’s prone match conditions were really good (not much wind, and the mirage effect was gone). I shot a new personal best and came second in the Junior Women’s Prone. I also made the South Island Open team (unfortunately we lost against the North Island) and I only just missed out on the New Zealand Open team by 0.2,” Piper added proudly.

“Additionally I shot in the Randel Trophy team. This is comprised of twelve female shooters of any age, plus a female coach and a manager, totalling fourteen people,” she said. “Shooters shoot twenty shots prone at 100 yards, plus

twenty shots at fifty yards. The score card then gets sent to the USA where they are viewed in competition with multiple other countries. This shoot hasn't happened in around forty years due to the lack of female shooters. However this year we had a large turn-out so we could make it work,” Piper explained.

“I was also selected for the New Zealand Junior team again and where I top scored,” Piper reported.

“The weekend of March 7th/8th I was in Auckland and shot at the Air Rifle nationals (sixty shots, ten metres, standing). On Saturday I shot a new personal best and was placed third. On the Sunday I shot okay, but not quite as good as I’d hoped and so was p l a c e d f ou r t h , ” P i p e r explained. “This gave me a second placing in the Junior Women’s at the event,” she added.

The weekend of March 14th 15th saw Piper shooting at the Outdoor South Islands.

“It didn’t go as well as I’d hoped,” Piper said, “but I was still placed second in the three position and second in B Grade for prone,” she concluded.
