Fresh from their Rock Radio song notoriety, The Mullet Dudes (MDs), Tobi Moore, Moore Johnny Barnard, Barnard Ryan Thomas, Thomas Finn Jacobs, Jacobs Todd Thomas, Thomas Cole Atutolu and Dylan Duffy are planning a mullet shave-off. The MDs are raising funds for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) by being sponsored to shave off their iconic mullet hair. MND is a group of diseases causing the death of nerve cells (neurones) that control the muscles enabling movement, speech, swallowing and breathing. With no nerves to activate them, these muscles gradually weaken and waste away. This causes a progressive loss of limb mobility and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing. The progression varies significantly from person to person. Tobi came up with the initial idea, before having a chat with his mate Ryan, and their parents, to start getting things underway. Tobi’s idea to specifically raise funds for MND was in memory of his, and cousin plus fellow shavee Johnny Barnard’s, Uncle George Redmond. Redmond George succumbed to this debilitating disease earlier this year. Finn Jacobs
was also keen to participate as he lost his great grandmother to this disease, as well. The boys are really hoping to raise between $5000 $10,000 to not only help elevate awareness, but also to provide continued support to those affected by the disease. If these boys reach their targeted amount they will be shaving their mullets off at the Kirwee Rugby Clubrooms during the rugby season (with more than a few parents and teachers heaving a sigh of relief!). The boys have received a considerable amount of support already. The group of participants has grown in size and family and friends are behind them all the way. Rumour has it that there are a few other people in the area keen to shave off their mullets on the night to help boost funds. The MDs have numerous family members coming to help with the shave-off and they’re hoping All Black Jack Goodhue will come along as well; but they’re pretty sure if he does, he won’t be shaving his mullet off! The boys told the News they’re reasonably comfortable about losing their mullets with Ryan commenting that he will miss his ‘do’ while Tobi and Finn want to grow theirs back! Johnny said his Mum, Sarah Barnard, Barnard has warned however, that she’s definitely not that keen on the ‘style’ making a reappearance. While most parents have suggested a not-too-short shave -off most boys have a slightly different idea! There’s a few fun twists prior to the shaves also being bandied about - everything from dying hair outrageous colours to dread-locking the mullets - what will emerge? Who would know! There’s also a plan afoot to adorn the freshly shaven
heads with a sprayed-on ‘Mullet Dudes’ logo. The group’s intention has spread far and wide with Dylan Duffy speaking about their fundraiser on the Rock FM Show last week. Publicity can only be good for their cause and it’s hoped donations will continue to accumulate. “In memory of George Redmond we invite the community to help us raise funds to assist those around the country battling this uncurable disease,” the boys said.

The Sheffield Community Hall will be officially reopened this weekend after seismic strengthening and refurbishment work was completed. The official reopening will be held on Sunday, March 15th at the Hall. The $620,000 work has seen the building brought up to 67% of the New Building Standards and also incorporated building code upgrades and general refurbishment. The Hall has been equipped with a new fire exit design, accessibility features, heating, light fixtures, carpet and interior painting. The stage has been rebuilt with recycled timber and additional storage added. The committee are proud to see their Hall back and open to the local community.

Twelve months ago Cantabrians witnessed horror in the streets of Christchurch at the Al Noor and Linwood Mosques. Commemorations will be taking place in the Malvern region on Sunday, March 15th. Wellington artist Ruby Jones drew the illustration of two women embracing with the caption: “This is your home and you should have been safe here.” It captured what was in the hearts and minds of many New Zealanders. “You are invited to gather to hold silence, to remember those who died and to strengthen our pursuit of peace, tolerance and

The 2020 Leeston Fete will take place on Saturday, March 28th. The organisers have been inundated with requests from near and far for stalls this year and have endeavoured to fit everyone in. Once again there will be an area dedicated for children in Anderson’s Square and the Secret Garden will be bursting at the seams with a variety of interesting stalls and displays. “2020 is a celebration for our community and the committee as this is the tenth anniversary of the Fete,” commented one of the organisers. “From small beginnings we’ve grown to the spectacular event we now have, with people from throughout New Zealand wanting to secure
their stall space. The growth has been incredible,” they added. The Fete will have a wide and varied selection of quality stalls, food and entertainment. Leeston’s High Street will be closed off to traffic from Messines Street to just before the Challenge Station corner, allowing people the freedom to meander through the Fete. (The
Challenge Station will be open and is accessible from both High Street and Market Street). A lot of popular stalls are returning and they will be joined by numerous newcomers. With its free entry the Fete is extremely popular with families making for a fun day out.

Saturday, March 21st 2020 marks the 136th year of racing for the Hororata Racing Club, nowadays p romot ed a s ‘Riccarton Park-Hororata’. This year is one of the rare occasions that race-day does not clash with the Malvern A & P Show thereby enabling a much larger contingent of country folk the opportunity to come to town and celebrate a day at the races, than may at times be the case. It is an event that allows Selwyn to celebrate its thoroughbred racing heritage at the iconic Riccarton Park Racecourse. The Hororata Racing Club was one of the earliest provincial Clubs to be formed after a meeting at Hororata in 1884, followed by a race meeting at Hororata in 1885. These early meetings at Hororata did not have a racecourse fully encircled by a running rail. Rails were erected only in the straight and on the bend leading into it. The rest of the course was marked with manuka stakes. Running rail for the full course was not installed until the 1920’s; a far cry from today’s safety conscious plastic versions. During the history of the Club there have been sixteen Presidents: Sir John Hall, Hall Mr HA Knight, Knight Major L D G Ackland, Ackland William Deans, Deans Gilbert Grigg, Grigg Jack Thwaites, Thwaites George Hutton

Some great racing action at last year’s Hororata Racing Club’s race-day. Snr, Don Stuart, Stuart Les Bennetts, Bennetts George Hutton, Hutton Michael Murchison, Murchison Tom Grigg, Grigg Neil Rainey, Rainey Dennis Watson, Watson Don Stewart and today’s first woman to chair the Club, Diane Chesmar, Chesmar who was elected in October 2019. A ‘Ladies Bracelet’ race was run at the very first meeting, and this was revived at the Centennial meeting in 1984. For that year, and every year since, Petersen’s Jewellers in the Bush Inn Centre have kindly donated a gold bracelet for a race. This year will be the 36th bracelet and is attached to the race for two-year-olds. Whilst an integral component of ‘Riccarton Park’, Hororata continues to be run by an enthusiastic and experienced committee with a good blend of youth. It retains strong links to its ‘home district’ from which it continues to receive solid support.
This year’s Hororata annual race-meeting will see nine races run for combined stake-money of $282,500 up for competition. The day’s feature event is the $80,000 Valachi Downs Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes sponsored by Kevin Hickman; a man with a very real and close affinity with the Hororata area. This race has been upgraded to a Group 3 event making it the most important race in the history of Hororata racing and one of the most prestigious 85 races in the country.

The 110th annual Malvern Dog Trials were held on February 28th and 29th at Springvale, Springfield. It was reported to be a great two days with 312 entries being received. Organisers commented that Sheffield School PTA again did a fantastic job of the food and they thanked everyone who also sponsored the event. As well as winning prize money, the first five placings in each event gain qualifying points making them eligible to compete at the
annual championships. The New Zealand Championships are held in each Island alternately, this year they are being held at Greenvale in Gore. Four events were held at the Malvern competition, with event one being Long head. In this class the competitor starts his dog from a marked ring and the dog heads three sheep on a hill 300 to 600 metres away. The dog then pulls them into the ring in as straight a line as possible and holds them stationary to the judge's satisfaction, all within a time limit of between ten and fifteen minutes. Event two was the Short Head and Yard. In this class sheep are held in a hook approximately 200 metres from the flat. Sheep are headed and pulled to where the competitor is standing on the flat. Man and dog drive the sheep along the flat through a set of hurdles to a pen. The run is complete when the sheep are in the pen and the gate is shut. Huntaway events: Event three was the Zig Zag Hunt. Here the competitor starts his dog from a marked quad. Three sheep are liberated in front of them and the dog then uses his bark to hunt three sheep up a hill for about 200 to 300 metres. The course is set between three pairs of markers which are twenty metres apart. These pairs of markers are offset to test the dog's ability to slew sheep; that is to force a change of direction. The run is completed when the sheep pass between the top set of markers, to the judge's satisfaction and within the given time limit. Event four, Straight Hunt, this
event is the same as the ZigZag Hunt except that there is only one set of markers set twenty metres apart at the top of the course. The dog aims to hunt the sheep from the starting point, in as straight a line as possible, through the top set of markers. The huntaway's role is to shift sheep with a steady flow of noise directed at the sheep. It should not turn back towards the competitor or, in any way, take its attention off the sheep. Any hunt run should be controlled and progressive, demonstrating the dog's ability to ‘hunt’. ARTHUR’S PASS Organised by the YMCA Arthur’s Pass Outdoor Education Centre the forthcoming Autumn Fete has been arranged to provide a community event with something for everyone to enjoy. It’s also hoped the March 21st Fete will attract visitors to the picturesque township that’s right on this area’s doorstep. The event is part of the YMCA Arthur’s Pass summer programme, but is being held later than usual this year due to other existing events. The Fete plans to offer something for the whole family; market stalls, sausage sizzle, bouncy castle, music, local crafts and products. Add to this, games, a bake sale, raffle and much more, plus free entry! The Fete is fundraising
for the YMCA Arthur’s Pass Outdoor Education Centre’s programmes (specifically clothing and equipment to reduce barriers to participation and enable more people to enjoy the outdoors). “The raffle has attracted some fantastic donated prizes,” event
organisers commented, “and we have numerous stall holders selling locally made products,” they added.

Carnmore Pony Club, based on Jones Road, is run by Amelia and Cheryl French and recently had six of their members attend the Scandal Trophy. This prestigious pony club competition for both individuals and teams took place at the Canterbury Agricultural Park on Sunday, February 16th. Carnmore members attending performed extremely well, coming away with the highest combined scores to win the Huntley Cup team event. Individually their riders also had good performances. Oliver Grayling winning the Scandal Trophy itself, riding one of Amelia and Cheryl’s horses; ‘Leo Dreams of Gold’. “Oliver does not have his own horse, but he comes to Carnmore every week to train. He was competing in a large class of Canterbury's top young
riders,” Amelia commented. Along with this success he also won the Saladin Cup for his age class. Madeleine Collins also competed in the Scandal Trophy class on her pony ‘Dalmar Rhinestone’, and came a credible seventh place out of the fourteen in that class, and was placed third in her age group. The other members of the Carnmore team were Paige Foot riding ‘Brookfield's Forget Me Not’ who was placed first in her class; Bridget Morris riding ‘Tex’ fourth in her class; Millie Lough riding ‘Missy’ also fourth in her class and Alice Wainwright riding ‘Tess’.

Darfield Gun Club (DGC) has had a busy first quarter of the year with three Club shoots, the Greg West Trophy shoot and Club members competing in the Shane Watson 200 at Methven and the Mead/Methven 300. On the weekend of March 6th, 7th and 8th Malvern bowlers were involved in the Country team playing at Ashburton versus North Otago, Central Otago and South Canterbury. They were bowling in the Lex Kimber Trophy competition for players with up to ten years’ playing ability. The Country team was comprised of Malvern players, along with others from Mid Canterbury, North Otago and Central Otago. On day one the Country team won one game and had a draw, and they were at the bottom. The second day, with a bit of tweaking to the teams, they won five out of the six games which put country at a very good second place only just
missing out on first position. The girls were thrilled, and everyone had played really well.
