Over a seven day period the DHS Year 7/8 Boys’ Cricket Team have played three matches; it’s been full on!

This is all part of the National Primary Schools’ competition.

All T20 games are knock out.

First match against Tai Tapu School on Tuesday, February 25th.

Darfield batted first and set a very good score; 135 for three after twenty overs. Austin Earl and Gus Ferguson (twelve runs) opened up and put on 41 with some good running between the wickets. Tobi Moore came in and smashed 27 runs. Austin Earl, ended up 66 not out; a very good innings for our team.

DHS were ruthless when they come out to bowl and they bowled Tai Tapu out for 38.

Lewis Lee was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets for four runs. Riley McNae and Bede Lee, Lee both very handy leg spinners, grabbed one wicket each.

Second Match against Clearview School on Thursday, February 27th.

DHS batted first and posted 81 all out after 13.1 overs! Finn Jacobs batted well with a fast 36 from 26 balls backed up by Austin Earl with 15 from 20 balls. Ex DHS lad Henry Pratt (good friends with the lads) opened for Clearview and went hard scoring seventeen quick runs. We fielded and bowled our hearts out, huge commitment from all the lads. It came down

to Clearview needing six from the last over to win, and DHS needed one wicket. Austin threw the ball to Riley McNae (leg spinner) to bowl the last over; he showed such great control with his line and length. It came down to four needed from two balls! The batsman goes for it; it goes in the air towards the boundary looking like a certain four runs, Gus Ferguson attacks the ball and takes this amazing catch. Darfield win!!

I believe our strength is being a well rounded team (no ‘I’ in team) and we all chip in at times. We are now off to the next round on the West Coast.

“Children's Day is about putting tamariki first. It’s an opportunity for families, and communities to celebrate and nurture children, and an opportunity for us all to engage in the responsibility of supporting the lives of tamariki in our communities,” commented Kate Webb SPN Coordinator.

“This year saw us collaborate with even more community org an is at io ns, and the volunteer support that we received was truly outstanding,” she added.

The free event saw numerous family and community providers showcasing factual and empowering resources for parents, whilst many early childhood providers brought along fun, tactile, engaging and educational activities and games.

Stage entertainment included young up and coming band Out of Control, along with dance performances from Star Jam, highland dancing from Jacqueline Jones School of Dance and pre-school dance fun with home based childcare providers Paua.

Michelle’s At a public meeting held recently in Darfield, evacuations caused by a fire in McHugh’s Forest were discussed. The meeting facilitated by FENZ (Fire and Emergency New Zealand) and supported by Selwyn District Council took place on February 20th, in the Darfield Recreation Centre.

FENZ has identified McHugh’s Forest Park as an area of potential fire risk due to its close proximity to residential properties and businesses in Darfield and the abundance of fuels. The risk would be greatly increased during periods of high wind, that could transport embers ahead of the main fire causing spot fires in the township.

Those attending were handed a draft information sheet showing Darfield divided into two zones.

Zone On e, surroundi ng McHugh’s and taking in part of Landsborough, Horndon Street to Maxwell Street and the southern side of State Highway 73 down Bangor Road until approximately Piako Drive. Zone Two begins at the edge of Zone One and extends eastward to Kimberley Road and down Horndon Street to Jackson Street. Should the Forest ignite Prune large trees and remove all branches within two metres of the ground

those in Zone One would be told to ‘Evacuate Now’, those in Zone Two would be placed on standby, followed by an evacuation order if needed. It was pointed out that the evacuation area could be extended beyond zones one and two depending on the continued fire risk. A large amount of smoke from the fire is possible and residents should self-evacuate if they felt unsafe, or unwell.

For any residents evacuated that can't find shelter with friends or family outside the evacuation zone, emergency centres would be established at the Kirwee Community Hall and Glentunnel Community Centre.

FEN Z recommends that everyone knows their evacuation route and takes time to make a plan for how they would evacuate. This could include having essential items ready to go and making a plan for pets and animals.

Use approved exhaust and spark arrester systems and keep a fire extinguisher in the vehicle.

Green breaks, low flammability plants - short or green lawns can reduce the impact of fire on a dwelling. Consider alternatives to bark and wooden mulch around the outside of the house.

Installation of sprinklers and irrigation around a residence can help reduce a fire’s impact. Keep under decks and gutters clear of dry vegetation. If having to evacuate - drop a tennis ball in the downpipe and fill gutters with water - may assist if an ember were to fall.

Have pets ready to go if the evacuation order is given.

Ensure enough food and water is taken, plus leash, cage, muzzle or medication.

Livestock are trickier - if required to stay in the paddock - open internal gates while keeping external ones closed.

In houses - ensure there are working smoke alarms, have an escape plan that everyone in the family knows and practise it regularly. Clean chimneys at least once a year and dispose of hot ashes by putting into a metal bucket and leaving there for at least five days.

Taking on teams from throughout New Zealand the Malvern Women’s Under 35’s Hockey team were runners-up following their final game in the New Zealand Hockey Masters competition held recently in Christchurch.

Final placings were 1st: Wellington, 2nd: Malvern, 3rd: Auckland and 4th: Canterbury.

Games and scores were: February 23rd Malvern v Auckland (win 1-0), February 24th Malvern v North Harbour (draw 2 all), February 26th Malvern v Central Otago (win 7-0), February 28th Malvern v Canterbury (win 3-0), February 29th Final Malvern v Wellington (loss 2-0).

An enthusiastic group of 68 retired, semi-retired and nearly retired Malvern people were welcomed to the inaugural meeting of U3A Malvern by the steering committee chair, Robyn Wendt, Wendt on Friday, February 21st. Eleven apologies were received. The most commonly heard phrase was, “it is great to have this in Darfield”.

“It gives us the opportunity to have our ideas and thoughts challenged,” Robyn commented.

Colleen Young a representative of the U3A Network Canterbury spoke, “congratulations to the steering committee for getting U3A Malvern up and running, U3A keeps our brains active”.

The inaugural speaker was Professor Phil Bagshaw who certainly did keep the minds of those attending active, it was reported, along with challenging their thoughts.

With humour he spoke about unmet secondary (hospital) he al th n e eds an d th e Christchurch Charity Hospital.

The Group found his facts and figures for New Zealand Health care enlightening. 9.8% of people who are told they need hospital care, have been refused. Using Orwellian speak, Phil said, “when they say, the waiting list is only four months long, they mean, if your operation won’t be done within four months we won’t have you on our waiting list”. The Charity Hospital came about after Professor Bagshaw had been to a surgeon’s conference in Australia entitled, ‘The Outlook of Surgical Services’, where it was stated that if politicians did not do something within ten years there would be a need for charity hospitals. On his return to New Zealand he set about with great enthusiasm establishing the first charity hospital in the country where timely and high quality treatment could be provided. It was a $5.8 million project with running costs of $850,000 per year. This hospital has now provided 18,281 visits which include surgery, dental and counselling. There are only four paid staff the rest are all voluntary. In 2019 there were 190 voluntary staff.

On Wednesday, February 26th seventy people attended the local Skate Jam event at Darfield Skate Park. It was reported to be a fantastic afternoon with lots of beginners taking advantage of the free gear to borrow and the tips and lessons from Cheapskates Skate Skool. Those that attended learnt new tricks, got to hang out with their friends, met lots of people and many were lucky enough to win prizes.

“Just another fabulous idea from Carol at Carol's Closet,” Carol Gurney said with a laugh as she speaks of the new free library initiative at the Hororata Community Hall. “I often use the one in Darfield and the Closet had a few books (even though we really cater for women’s recycled clothing and accessories), Carol explained. Hororata locals Mary and Rob Abbott donated the fridge to house the books and children from Hororata Primary put their design on it.

“It’s red, bright and gorgeous,” Carol said.

Folk are encouraged to drop off books, pick up books or swap books - just however it works for them.

“No money is involved,” Carol said, “it just encourages people to read.”

The library is open 24/7 unlike the adjoining Closet which has set hours (see their Facebook page for further details of these).

“We also have a red clothing drop-off bin outside the Closet,” Carol added. “If you haven't been to see what we’ve got at the Closet, we would love you to call in and say hi. We have eftpos, changing room, jewellery, hats, bags and shoes etc. All profits from Carol’s Closet go to the St John's parish, Hororata,” Carol concluded.

2020. How did that happen?

Who remembers Y2K like it was yesterday? Twenty years has flown by. It also means we are now issuing yearly WOFs to vehicles that are twenty years old. That’s twelve months between safety checks! I’ve always been an advocate for a distance/time based WOF. (10,000kms or twelve months whichever comes first). That way a high usage vehicle (travelling salesperson) is checked more often and before it wears out, and a vehicle used once a week to go to shops (Nana’s car) is checked once a year. The Motor Trade Association says, “four out of ten cars failed their first WOF inspection in 2019, which amounts to a total of 1,886,104 vehicles.

It shows that many car owners still rely on the warrant of fitness inspection to discover any problems.”

What we are finding in the workshop is a fa i r percentage of vehicles presented to us for their yearly WOFs are failing on multiple items, often these vehicles have done in excess of 30,000kms since their last WOF check. MTA advise: “Drivers need to be doing more to monitor the safety of their cars.

Everyone should check the most common issues – lights, brakes, suspension and tyres at least every six months.”

That’s where a GOOD

A good service isn’t just an Oil and filter change. There are companies out there that do just oil changes but are they really looking after you and your vehicle’s safety? A good service should also look at lights, brakes, suspension and tyres. It should give you peace of mind and troublefree motoring for the next six months/10,000kms. It should also give you a complete picture of your vehicle’s ‘health’. Every vehicle should be serviced periodically in conjunction with the distance travelled and alongside your WOF check.

This puts the most stress on your vehicle’s cooling system, especially when we load up the car, hook on the trailer and head up the hills.

It’s a perfect storm for pushing your vehicle’s cooling system to the maximum. Keep your car well serviced and regularly

Preventative maintenance will help you avoid costly break-downs.

Be prepared and carry a water container with two litres of water in, just in case the worst happens. If the vehicle gets hot while driving (anything above half on temp gauge) turn the heater on HOT and fan on HIGH. Drive to a safe stopping place. Keep engine running and heater on hot and wait for the temp gauge to drop. If the temp gauge continues to rise to the top (red) then turn off the engine and wait for it to cool down, this may take twenty to thirty minutes. DO NOT check radiator when hot, WAIT. When cool check the water level in the radiator and top up with your two litre water bottle. Then drive conservatively and get the vehicle attended to ASAP.

And that was the case recently when a group of Sheffield Garden Club members set out on an all-day garden tour across the Waimakariri Gorge. Jackets, sunhats and lunch were the order of the day!

Georgie Eaves’ garden was an older garden with lovely trees, flowers and a magnificent v e g e ta b le g a r d e n. J a ni c e Marshall’s town garden was a joy to see with many clematis, rhododendrons, magnolias, roses and perennials. Lunch was enjoyed on her verandah. Bev and Merrick Monteith’s garden was large, well maintained and with lovely specimen trees. Bronwyn AdamsAdamsHooper’s garden was the culmination of a great vision fulfilled, as her huge gardens of fruit and vegetables were producing extremely well. Being part of the ‘Seeds For Change’ project she grows organically and supplies families in need weekly.

Kathy and Ken Muscroft Taylor’s garden also gave plenty to impress. A lovely rose bed and a great covered raspberry cage was admired by all. Fruit trees, colourful gardens and mature trees - much needed for sitting under on our hot day; all of this set in a beautiful country setting.

The sun came out for lunch and a garden visit at Tuahiwi Botanicals, a herb farm just out of Rangiora.

The group received a detailed tour of the herb garden by owner Clare, Clare who highlighted the variety of herbs available, their growth habits and uses. Garden club members also had an opportunity to try a variety of herbal teas, and skincare products she made onsite.

The day finished with a tour of Lavender Fields in Waikuku, a lavender farm owned and operated by Clare and Kevin.

Kevin Clare’s father, Jim Curnow, initially planted out the lavender fields in 1995, making it one of the earliest lavender farms in New Zealand.

The Sheffield Garden Club meets on the first Tuesday of the month at the St Ambrose Church Hall, Sheffield.

Day 1: Saturday, February 15th Darfield High School (DHS) won the toss and put Christ’s College (CC) in to bat on a well grassed Darfield pitch, which played well and offered a bit for both quick bowlers and spinners. It was a very cautious start from the get go at just over two runs per over for the first twenty overs; the young men bowled well picking up two wickets. Then with the introduction of Isaac Earl, Earl bowling his leg spin, things started to happen. The CC batsmen struggled to get on top of him, he bowled well, finishing with a five wicket bag.

CC all out for 115 after 52 overs.

DHS turn to bat; a positive start once again by our openers and this attitude carried on all through the innings. Everyone contributed; notable mentions are Jesse Sutherland carrying on his good form with 44 runs and Jayden McIntyre 37. It was a good team performance to post 175 from 49 overs, all out, in the last over of the day. This awarded DHS 1st innings points and a 60 lead going into the second day.

very slowly. It become clear that they weren’t interested in trying to score at a rate where they could set DHS a target to chase to make a game of it. They opted for the safety of trying to bat out the whole day; which they did until the rain came in at 4pm and stumps were drawn with CC 182 for 8 for 72 overs.

All of the DHS men tried so hard all day to get them out I’m proud of them. Isaac Earl ended up bowling 20 overs taking 4 for 33, that gave Isaac 9 wickets for the match.

A happy band of volunteers was found, and the monthly group was on its way, it was reported.

Camping and Tourism infrastructure funding update: The Council also received an update on over $900,000 worth of upgrades camping grounds and public toilets, which have been completed or scheduled.

Malvern Community Board Meeting Club Championship Round 4 February 22nd, 2020 A cool cloudy afternoon greeted the few hardy shooters who arrived for the fourth round of the Club Championship. The wind was building from the south which turned out to be an ominous sign.

After setting up the targets and dressing the range, 800 yards was shot. Drizzle started to fall as Chris and Allan completed their shooting.

While moving back to 900 yards the drizzle turned into rain which continued to get worse. A decision was made cancel shooting and postpone the Club Championship Round to another day.

The fifth round of the Club Championship, ten shots at 500 and 600 yards and fifteen shots at 600 yards, took place on Saturday, February 29th.

Arthur’s Pass, Monday, February 24th 2020 The Malvern Community Board held its first on-the-road meeting of the year on Monday night in Arthur’s Pass.

Prior to the meeting, the Board visited several areas of interest in the District, including Kirwee Cemetery, Darfield’s McHugh’s Forest, Sheffield Domain and Hall, Springfield Pit and Castle Hill where they met with representatives from the committees to hear about the recent trees’ survey.

In Arthur’s Pass the Board met with committee representatives and discussed a number of issues.

Representatives attended the meeting and also shared dinner with Board members and staff.

The Board heard from Council’s Water Surface Engineer about Hororata’s flooding issues and a proposed work plan in this regard. Staff thanked the working group in Hororata who had a great input into the project.

The Chief Executive briefly spoke about the upcoming Board clinics scheduled monthly around the District NEXT MEETING and said it will be reviewed Monday 23rd March, 4pm after July. The first clinic will be held in the Glentunnel Darfield Library & Service Centre Community Centre with Board members and staff on hand to BOARD CLINIC talk to any members of the Monday 9th March, 3pm-6pm community.
