Around a hundred and twenty people enjoyed Springfield Picnic in the Park on Wednesday, February 19th. The township and surrounds, get together was graced by great weather.

Glimpses of a moment in time, figurative portraits, enigmatic sculptures and organic forms of pottery are on show from Friday, February 28th at Te Huanui, Darfield, in its upcoming exhibition, ‘Figuratively Speaking’. Drawing on artists across the South Island, the Gallery will showcase works by Vicki Knudsen, Knudsen Jo Loughnan, Loughnan Odelle Morshuis and Dot Moulton.

Moulton “Vicki’s work celebrates life and the joys and trials we have.

While we are most familiar with Vicki’s work in watercolour, for this exhibition we’re showing a series of life drawings in charcoal,” explained MCAC Arts Administrator, Katrina Ellis.

Ellis “Jo has a love of portraits and figures, capturing moods, expressions and relationships with a fresh, expressive style.

Her mixed media works capture moments in time creating likeness and movement.

While Odelle’s work creates a narrative, every space telling a story with movement, balancing between the here and now, the when and why. Both her paintings and steel sculptures

create strong, yet delicate finished pieces,” Katrina added.

“Dot’s current pottery showcases her imagination and freedom from the wheel-thrown domestic wares she made in a former pottery career. Pinching and coiling clay, Dot loves the organic results and the opportunity to explore new techniques.”

‘Figuratively Speaking’ opens on Friday, February 28th and runs until Thursday, March 26th.

Jordan Riki (Tainui) took to the field on February 22nd as a member of the New Zealand Māori All Stars side in a Round 1 match between the NRL Indigenous All Stars at Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast. The NZ side came out with a win 30-16. Following high school, Jordan was picked up by the Brisbane Broncos. After landing on their radar at the age of fourteen, he went on to be signed to the Club's top-side at seventeen and now at the age of twenty he’s playing for the Māori All-Stars.

Jordan’s mother Janelle RikiRikiWaaka commented that as a whānau they could not be any more proud of the accomplishments he has made while being in the NRL. “Representing your culture comes with responsibilities but more importantly it’s a huge honour. We know that there will be many of our young rangatahi

watching this games and dreaming of their opportunity one day,” she said. “The years of sacrifice and hard work have paid off,” Janelle added.

“I often used to ask Jordan, ‘what won’t you do to get your dream?' The answer would

100 Year Celebration!

SUNDAY 29TH MARCH 2020 The Friends of Oxford Hospital are planning a Celebration of 100 Years with an Afternoon Tea, with Guest Speakers, Historic Display & Live Music. Followed by dinner at the Oxford Working Men’s Club.

In 1919 the North Canterbury Hospital Board purchased five acres of land from Mr W H Alford in preparation for establishing a hospital in Oxford. The hospital, constructed in weatherboard, opened on March 30th, 1920 having cost £5,486 to build.

The new Oxford Hospital contained ten beds for use by either medical or maternity patients. T he structure contained balconies, which in 1939 were closed-in creating space for four more beds, while in 1979 space was made for a further bed bringing the total to fifteen.

In 2020 the facility has thirty members of staff employed, has eight long-term patients and seven beds for respite care,

medical and palliative care.

Most patients using the Hospital are local.

The Hospital has an active Friends group and it is this group who are planning to celebrate the centenary of the Hospital’s existence. Along with the opportunity to get-together and catch up, an afternoon tea with speakers has been planned, complete with historic display and live music. A celebratory dinner will take place at the Oxford Working Men’s Club in the evening.

The current Friends of Oxford Hospital evolved from the Lady Visitors Association which was formed in 1920, only a few months after the first patients were installed at the Hospital.

They met and hemmed napkins, plus knitted baby singlets and booties. Association members visited patients and left eggs,

vegetables and homemade baking in the Hospital kitchen.

In 1987 the Group was renamed The Friends of Oxford Hospital and have continued to provide patient comforts continually throughout the ensuing years.

Since its inception one hundred years ago the Hospital Friends have provided numerous appreciated goods and services for the facility and its patients.

One of the more unusual things budgeted for are any associated costs for Hospital cat, ‘Blue’. The group have purchased furniture for various rooms and replaced both carpet and furniture in the Hospital conservatory. They also often take patients out for much enjoyed outings.

Steph Kimber of Mike Pero Real Estate was thrilled to help the Darfield High School (DHS) Outdoor Education classes with a Mike Pero Foundation grant for mountain bikes to add to the School’s existing resources.

The Mike Pero Foundation is a charitable organisation which is all about giving back to the communities where agents work and live. Raising over $500,000 since it was established in 2014 the Foundation assists everyday people who just need that little bit extra to help with day to day living. Perhaps it’s individuals

or groups who do not qualify for government assistance, or who may not be considered for a grant elsewhere. The Foundation especially wishes to make a difference to those whose lives have been affected by a medical condition, or family circumstances, both young and old.

Over the years, Darfield High School’s Outdoor Education has grown from just one Year 13 class to having a Year 12 course and, just recently, a Year 11 course.

The purpose of these courses is to give students the skills,

knowledge and confidence to be able to participate in the outdoors in their own time.

During these courses, students participate in rock climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, tramping, and alpinism, as well as learning the essentials of working together as a team and being self-managing.

The School thanks Steph and the Mike Pero Foundation for their generous sponsorship of these bikes. This enables students to have a quality experience using equipment that is fit for purpose.

Local twenty year old, talented golfer Dominic Brettkelly is currently home in the area and taking a semester break from his studies.

Dominic was successfully awarded a golf scholarship to Western Kentucky University, United States.

He commented that his studies were going well and he is continuing with a couple of online classes. However he’s currently focussed on regaining his mental health and enjoying life, in which golf plays a big part.

“I expect a lot of myself and this has exerted a huge amount of pressure as I strive to succeed,” Dominic said. “I am currently trying to make changes to the way I approach things. I’m putting new routines in place that will help achieve future goals,” he explained. Dominic added that he is still going to the gym daily and has started meditating which is helping to change his mindset. “I hope the new routines I’m developing will be with me for both the rest of my life and golfing career,” Dominic said. “I never thought depression, or anxiety, would happen to me. I definitely feel we need to talk more about mental health here in New Zealand,” he explained. “I’m concentrating on regaining my perspective on the world, while enjoying life and what it has to offer,” Dominic added.

Dominic’s new approach to both life and his sport is attributed with assisting him win the Lamb and Hayward Canterbury Strokeplay Championship at Harewood recently.

“I hope to employ this new approach in any upcoming tournaments also,” he said.

Dominic has plans to do well in the South Island Strokeplay at St Clair in Dunedin (which started on Friday, February 21st) and is looking at possible entry in some New Zealand Pro Tournaments taking place in the North Island.

He hopes this break will help fine tune his mental approach to golf, and life in general, before he returns to University in May. For now Dominic is enjoying being home with his family and playing on his home Hororata Golf Club Course at Glentunnel - with the odd tournament win thrown in for good measure!

Simply put, a leap year is a year with an extra day - and 2020 is it with a February 29th - which is added nearly every four years to the calendar year.

Adding an extra day every four years keeps the calendar aligned correctly with the astronomical seasons, since a year according to the Gregorian calendar (365 days) and a year according to Earth’s orbit around the Sun (approximately 365.25 days) are not the exact same length of time. Without this extra day, the calendar and the seasons would gradually get out of sync.

Because of this extra day, a leap year has 366 days instead of 365. Additionally, a leap year does not end and begin on the same day of the week, as a non-leap year does.

Generally, a leap year happens every four years, which is a fairly simple pattern to remember. However, there is a little more to it than that.

Leap year rules: A year may be a leap year if it is evenly divisible by four. Years that are divisible by 100 (century years such as 1900 or 2000) cannot be leap years unless they are also divisible by 400. (For this reason, the years 1700, 1800, and 1900 were not leap years, but the years 1600 and 2000 were.) If a year satisfies these rules, then it is a leap year.

2020 happens to follow the rules of leap years: 2020 divided by four equals 505 with no remainder: 2020 is not a century year, so it does not need to be divisible by 100 or 400. Therefore, 2020 abides by the rules of leap years and will have an extra day added to it: Saturday, February 29th.

The name ‘leap year’ probably comes from the fact that while a fixed date in the Gregorian calendar normally advances one day of the week from one year to the next, the day of the week in the twelve months following the leap day (from March 1st through February 28th of the following year) will advance two days due to the extra day (thus ‘leaping over’ one of the days in the week). Anecdotally February 29th is also the day females take on the generally-accepted male role and propose matrimony to their partners.

February 29th, or Bachelor's Day, is an Irish tradition on Leap Day allowing women to initiate dances and propose marriage. If the proposal was refused the man was expected to buy the woman a silk gown or, by the mid-20th century, a fur coat.

For local woman Rachael Evans having a birthday on February 29th wasn’t always too much fun. Her impending birth came with complications causing the process to be induced (sympathy here for poor mum Sharmaine as it was the hottest day of that summer and it was in front of a group of medical students!).

“Close friends of mine know that I am all about my birthday,” Rachael said, “and much of this is due to only having one legitimate one every four years! I don't really like it; whether I celebrate it on February 28th, or any other day of the year, it's still not actually my birthday. So when there is a 29th I try to make it a goodie,” she laughed.

“I celebrate a non-leap year birthday on February 28th, which has, in the past, sparked much debate as some people believe it should be celebrated on March 1st, as I wasn’t actually born on the 28th. While I don't tend to do big celebrations on these years, I did have a memorable McDonalds kid’s birthday party for my third leap year party, when I was twelve!

“I have encountered two people that were born on a leap day.

One conincidentally was exactly the same age and born in the same hospital as I was and we met on a school exchange with Ellesmere College. The other was when I was in England and that ‘leapling’ was six, while I was five,” Rachael concluded.

Saturday morning, February 22nd, at West Melton a disappointing six teams lined up to play the Malvern Women’s Fours Championship. Whilst the weather was a little cool at ten degrees in the morning it had nothing on what was to happen during their last game in the afternoon. Fortunately the game was finished before the eventual downpour happened, but all bowlers were left shivering in the rapidly dropping temperature.

Eventual winner was a team from Darfield skipped by Heather Patterson, Patterson Wendy Clucas, Clucas Alison Lalor and Anthea Cridge.

The winner was a third year player from West Melton Jean Gubb, Gubb who won it on a points differential from runner-up Glenda van Herpt of Coalgate, third was Jude Morgan from West Melton.

Only one Malvern Championship remains to be played for the season and that is the Under Five Year Players Mixed Pair’s Championship to be played at Coalgate on Sunday March 15th.

Friday, February 21st delivered another cracker day for the beginning of the Malvern Primary Schools’ activity calendar, kicking off with the annual Top Team event at Glentunnel Primary School. This event catered for Year 5/6 students, challenging them to work in teams from across all schools to complete tasks.

Finn deep in concentration on Friday, February 21st at the Year 5/6 Top Team event.

Those that worked best together and communicated well were the winners at each of the thirteen stations, with the highest points of the day emerging as the Top Team.

That honour went to ‘The Champions’. All twenty six teams, over 260 students, had an absolute blast! Asking around the students at the end
