The Sheffield Rugby Club’s mountain bike race took place on February 16th in the picturesque setting of the Annat foothills. Spokesperson for the organisers Tom Ferguson had the following to report: “New record for our mountain bike race, with national champion Anton Cooper smashing the course in an incredible 1:02:24. Jacob Turner took out second and Oceania under 19 champion Ethan Rose was third. We are pretty humbled here at our little race to have some of the world’s most elite mountain bikers enter. Special thanks to all the competitors in the run and bike that took part to help raise money to go towards our kids’ sport.

“Also thanks so much to the Stokes and Cleland families for access to their properties and to all our sponsors. It is not easy for small businesses at present and we are very grateful for their support.

St John recently held a first aid course in Darfield, after a long gap since the previous one.

As part of their sixtieth Anniversary last year, local St John Malvern wanted to give members of the local community a chance to train in Darfield, so a course was arranged, and subsidised by the area committee.

Warren Dobbs delivered the course to fourteen people who attended on Saturday, February 15th. This was a Level 1 course, suitable for use in the workplace.

“There was a good cross section of attendees, from farm workers, mechanics, job seekers, clergy and those that just felt it was about time to upskill,” reported Ross Meder, Meder St John Malvern.

“The course met all of their needs.

“A good blend of practical skill sessions and theory were covered. Both hands-on and theory were presented in a relaxed atmosphere, with great participation, along with a few laughs,” he added. “CPR skills

“Each of those attending can now return to their place in the community and feel confident that they have the skills as a first responder. That they can make a difference for the patient, and that they have the confidence to easily cope with an emergency, or be a help until further resources arrive on the scene.

“As always,” Ross added, “skills training builds on common sense, to make us better able

to cope with something out of our comfort zone. We plan to run another course, similar to this, later in the year,” he concluded.

The first Summer in Selwyn Skate Jam kicked off at Glentunnel School on Wednesday, February 12th, with more than sixty people enjoying skateboarding, scootering and other wheeled fun.

Cheapskate Skate Skool instructors Scott, Scott George and Josh were on hand to teach those children attending, the basics and bring some fun, as well as providing gear for those who didn’t have any.

Siblings Luke and Leah Zydenbos from Halkett have both recently been selected for New Zealand Mounted Games teams. Luke is heading to Kentucky, USA, in September with the New Zealand Nations team, along with fellow Cantabrian Kate Gutry from Eyreton and riders from Hawke’s Bay, Northland and Auckland. They will compete against teams from USA, Canada, Australia and South Africa. New Zealand is the defending champion for the Nations Cup this year, so the pressure is on the team. This time round it will be a tougher competition as all riders will be on ponies borrowed from the USA. Meanwhile, in August, Luke’s sister, Leah will compete for the IMGA World Teams Open Championship being held in Scotland, along with fellow team members from Otago, Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa and Waikato. All

the strong European teams, such as England, Wales, Ireland and France, will be competing, and these teams have the advantage of riding their own ponies. The New Zealand team is hoping to source some top ponies for the competition and will be training on a range of New Zealand ponies to prepare for this.

The World Championships for Open and Under 17 riders are held every year. There are also the annual European and Nations Championships, with the latter being all of the member counties outside Europe.

Mounted games is a branch of equestrian sport in which extremely fast games are played by people of all ages on ponies up to a height of 15 hands (152cm).

The sport of mounted games as it exists today was founded by Norman Patrick.

Patrick His aim was to extend the sport, previously age -restricted by Pony Club, for

wider participation, and for this reason, in 1984, he established the Mounted Games Association of Great Britain. In the years which followed his continued support and patronage ensured that the sport spread across Great Britain and beyond. At the time of Patrick's death in 2001, the sport which he had established was being enjoyed by many riders across the world, and the International Mounted Games Association, which was formed in 2003, now has members in twenty four countries on five continents.

Mounted Games can be played as an Individual, Pair or as a Team, and there are approximately thirty different games that can be played.

Games are divided into those requiring Speed, Agility or Accuracy, so the rider and pony combination needs to be good at all of these aspects. Team competitions have ten games in the qualifying sessions, usually there are four sessions, and twelve games in each of the two part finals.

The Canterbury Mounted Games Assn organises competitions regularly throughout the season (September to April) and welcomes new members to their weekly training sessions.

FINANCE FOR A NEW BUILD As new homes are exempt from the Reserve Bank’s 20% deposit requirement, new builds can be a good option for the first home buyer. You are eligible for Homestart and Kiwisaver withdrawals if you and/or your partner have contributed to Kiwisaver continuously for three, or more, years.

HomeStart grants can be up to $10,000 per person ($6,000 after three years, $8,000 after four years) and can be used in conjunction with all your KiwiSaver contributions (including employer contributions).

You are now able to use your HomeStart Grants and Kiwisaver for deposit funds.

So, if you are looking at a fixed price contract of say $500,000 including section, and you and your partner have contributed to KiwiSaver continuously for five years, you would have: $20,000 HomeStart Grants, plus $40,000 Kiwisaver Contributions (you would need to contact your KiwiSaver Provider to confirm how much you are eligible to withdraw) for a required deposit of 10% - $50,000.

As you can see, this is well worth looking into, especially if you are struggling to save a 20% deposit - say $80,000 for a $400,000 home.

You can do this by way of a ‘fixed price’ contract whereby you get a fully priced contract from a registered Master Builder, and you pay on invoice throughout the build. You need to bear in mind that the bank will charge interest for these partial drawdowns which you need to pay on top of your existing rent.

Banks also like a ‘comfort servicing surplus’ of 10 - 15% to accommodate possible cost overruns.

Or you can enter into a ‘turn key’ contract where you pay a deposit and then nothing until you move in.

Repayments (Principle and Interest) on a fully drawn loan for a build of $500,000, less 10% deposit $50,000 equalling $450,000 over a thirty year term @ 6% would equate to $622 per week.

Many wastewater treatment meant that Living in rural New Zealand, for many of us, means having to live in more of a self-sufficient manner than our urban counterparts. Trips to the shops are done weekly or fortnightly and usually planned with lengthy lists to avoid forgetting key ingredients. Water supply has to be sourced from a nearby stream, river, well or from roof collected water. We also have to find a way to manage domestic effluent within our property in a sustainable manner.

Back in the day a hole was dug a suitable distance from the house and an outhouse building installed to manage our domestic effluent. Modern technology has advanced significantly since then. Now we have on-site waste water disposal systems which use natural bacteria and the cleansing properties in soils to remove anything harmful from our waste before it is discharged to land.

The systems are so good these days, manufactures claim you could drink the end product

councils will allow rural landowners to install certified wastewater systems without requiring a resource consent, subject to meeting specific criteria. However, one of the pitfalls of our planning environment is that as technology changes and improves, so too does our expectations as to the quality of our wastewater disposal systems.

One recent example, was a client who wanted to undertake an extension to his house, and for all intents and purposes the extension could potentially be used as another bedroom. The extension required resource consent because it was too close to his neighbours boundary. As part of this Council needed evidence that the wastewater system could cope with potentially two more people living in the house, and also proof that the system met the 2012 standards.

The wastewater system in this case was installed in the 90’s, and twenty years of

there was very little chance his system would actually be up to scratch. Government requirements forced Council to make this landowner either upgrade his system or obtain further resource consents to meet the modern-day standards.

This more than doubled the costs and threatened the viability of the whole project. What he thought was a very simple house extension turned into a potentially significant cost to meet standards and significant time delays.

Fortunately, I was able to make him aware of this potential cost early on in the project, and we soon discovered that the actual costs of upgrading his system were minimal (some filters needed to be upgraded). He now has the confidence that when his children are playing in the front paddock, they are not at risk of anything seeping out of the ground.

We have come a long way from the outhouses of our grandparents days, but as there is still a sense of self sufficient living in our rural communities, rural areas will be relying on onsite wastewater systems for many years to come. Making sure that our systems are not harmful to the environment we enjoy is the role our Councils are required to have. Making sure those in our rural communities are aware of the pitfalls of the planning system will remove the headache and anxiety of having to obtain reports and resource consents.

A definite positive for the local area is the naming of Darfield Dairy as sellers of the biggest ice creams, by the Hits Radio Station, Christchurch.

The same station ventured into Darfield with their recent ‘Best Pie competition also!

The Hit’s Brodie and Fitzy were obviously ‘forced’ to market test the products to assure their audience the results were correct. Darfield Dairy took the honour of Christchurch’s Biggest Ice Cream (yes, we know Darfield isn’t Christchurch!).

The Darfield Dairy has been owned for the past seventeen years by local Errol Barnes.

The business is ably managed by another local, Mike Gilmour who has been at the helm since 2008.

Mike commented that he didn’t recognise the people from the radio station when he served them. “I did think it was a little strange that they ordered two scoops of the same flavour (chocolate),” he said. “Most people when ordering two scoops generally ask for two different flavours,” he added.

He laughingly said it was probably a smaller sized ice cream than he normally serves, but was obviously still a winning one!

The Darfield Dairy sells both Tip Top and Chateau ice cream and currently has about twenty to thirty different flavours across their three freezers. Mike said their most popular flavours were gold rush, goody gum drops and boysenberry and they sell a whooping nineteen tonnes of ice cream a year.

“Our ice creams have always been big, but they have got slightly larger over the last two or three years,” Mike said. “Ice creams are a great seller and are extremely popular,” he concluded.

A single scoop ice cream will cost people $3 at Darfield Dairy with many commenting - “it’s a very large small scoop!”

The Canterbury Under 16 Boys Touch team played in the Bunnings Junior Touch Nationals over the weekend of February 1416th in Auckland and have emerged victorious as the 2020 National Champions.

The team won their pool before playing a close game against Waikato in the semi final, and winning this 6-5.

The final was against Manawatu and Canterbury held their own during the whole game to take the Champion Title 9-6.

“We are very proud of this, being our first Junior National title for Canterbury, but more so we are honoured to have these young men as part of our whanau,” commented Team management.

“They showcased outstanding team work, humility and a dogged determination that ultimately led them to their desired outcome becoming reality,” they added.

“Congratulations to you all, and enjoy the moment!”

Tyler TapaTapa-Wither from Darfield was a valuable member of the team. Tyler plays his Club touch at Burnham in the Mixed Men and Youth grades.

He has kept busy with Canterbury trainings on Sundays and Mondays, as well as Fridays leading up to Nationals.

Tyler doesn’t get a break in between and is already in training for winter Rugby.

Canterbury Police remind locals to secure their vehicles Over the last few weeks there has been an increase in the number vehicle break-ins in southern Christchurch, particularly the Halswell area.

Canterbury Police have increased patrols in the area and would like to remind residents of simple measures they can take to make their vehicle less appealing to thieves.

Vehicle security to deter burglars: • Do not leave valuables or documents with personal information behind, especially passports.

• Park in well-lit areas when possible.

• Always lock your vehicles when you leave them and take your keys with you.

• Any boats or vehicles on your property should be disabled so they can’t be moved or towed away.

• Always lock your vehicle and leave windows up.

• Keep your vehicle in a secure garage if possible.

• Consider a steering wheel lock if you have an older vehicle.

• Keep in contact with your neighbours and look out for each other, too.

• We also encourage tradies to get their tools engraved with their driver’s licence number and secure them inside vehicles with chains and padlocks.

Seventeen year olds, Harry Williamson and Rozlyn Doherty are the Darfield High School 2020 Head Boy and Girl respectively.

Harry a pianist, has a keen interest in skiing and swimming and has attended DHS since Year 7. He keeps himself busy with part time employment at the Darfield Challenge Service Station.

“Being Head Boy has been a dream of mine since I started at DHS. I always used to look up to the head prefects when I was younger and now I can finally see myself in those shoes. One of the best things already about being Head Boy is interacting with pupils around the school, especially the younger year

groups. I am approached every single day whether it’s just a hello, or a full-on conversation by students I have never seen before, and that means a lot to me,” he explained. “I am focussed on making a difference at Darfield High School, to take opportunities that will allow for this to happen and I believe that 2020 is going to be a year to remember,” he commented proudly.

Rozlyn has also attended DHS since she was in Year 7. Her interests include playing rugby, spending time with friends and travelling.

Rozlyn currently undertakes part -time employment at Johnny Fresh in Darfield.

Head Girl is an amazing opportunity. I am excited to help students share their ideas, to be a positive role model within the School and to be a person anyone can go to whenever they want,” she explained. “I want to encourage everyone to do their best in academic, cultural, and sporting activities around the School, to show what they are able to achieve. In an effort to help harness the generosity of neighbours, residents Fi and Max Maddison have set up the Waddington Little Free Library and Plant/Vege Swap station on Rupert Street in Waddington.

“People are exceedingly generous,” Fi commented, “whether it’s books to swap, or an excess of fruit and veges.

We’ve noticed how neighbours in our area are willing to share their spare produce with others.”

Fi also added that after seeing a ‘street library’ at Bondi Beach in Sydney last year, she was keen to create one in Waddington.

Operating for around a month now, Fi commented that the station is beginning to find its feet. “Books have been swapped, and fruit and vege are being left, or taken.”

She believes that over time it will take on a life of its own supported by locals.

The Waddington Little Free Library and Plant/Vege Swap is open 24/7 and locals are encouraged to come and have a look; share what they have spare, and take what they need, so nothing goes to waste. “If people don’t have anything to swap, that’s okay, too,” Fi explained. “They can donate when they can.”

Once the little library has been up and running for a few months, Fi plans to register it with the world-wide Little Free Library organisation, however she added that that comes at a cost. To date the only cost associated with the station is the large birdcage housing the library, and paint for the brightly coloured images on the side.

“A neighbour donated Perspex for the doors and the timber for the box was sourced free from Farmlands in Darfield,” Fi said.

SUMMER GARDEN REVIEW & WINTER GARDEN PLANNING PLANNING To begin our Nourish year we will be holding a roundtable discussion. Local company Woodshack Kitchens, based in Rolleston, but previously of Darfield, has just been instrumental in the achievement of the world’s best kitchen. Woodshack Kitchens owned by Mark and Susan Davis and with the skill of factory manager Bob Tweed, constructed Christchurch’s Davinia Sutton’s, Sutton’s design which went on to receive the International Design of the Year Award at the 2019 Designer Kitchen and Bathroom Awards, held in the UK. The kitchen, called Heaton Street, was created for a client who wanted an uncluttered, chic, smooth space created with

edgy, urban materials.

The Heaton Street kitchen is effectively split into two sections by the island bench, providing a front area for food prep, cooking and interaction with guests, while the sink and associated ‘messy’ items - are placed to the rear of the island, out of immediate focus.

A separate zone, behind a veneered wall, provides out-ofsight storage, pantry and small appliance housing.

The kitchen’s palette of sleek finishes incorporates American White Oak veneer, finished with a warm matte stain, textured black granite surfaces and matte black ply doors and drawers.
