The Sheffield Rugby Club’s mountain bike race took place on February 16th in the picturesque setting of the Annat foothills. Spokesperson for the organisers Tom Ferguson had the following to report: “New record for our mountain bike race, with national champion Anton Cooper smashing the course in an incredible 1:02:24. Jacob Turner took out second and Oceania under 19 champion Ethan Rose was third. We are pretty humbled here at our little race to have some of the world’s most elite mountain bikers enter. Special thanks to all the competitors in the run and bike that took part to help raise money to go towards our kids’ sport. “Also thanks so much to the Stokes and Cleland families for access to their properties and to all our sponsors. It is not easy for small businesses at present and we are very grateful for their support. “It was a nervous morning waiting for the horrible nor-west wind, luckily it stayed relatively calm and the cloud cover kept the harsh sun away. “The gun went off and the dust was flying off the wheels. Kent Opie mountain bikes the course. Ferg pointed them up the road then Shaun the Sheep guided everyone towards Gary Fergs mowen strips. Mountain Man Reece Cleland was at the Annavale boundary, down at the bog was Uncle Keith Whiteside. Whiteside Ross Filippo's number one fans the Kelly family then pointed the runners down the road and the bikers back into the hill. Kim and Andy manned sheep-shit corner. The bellow of Richard and RD Bull could be heard from three valleys over as he pointed them up that ‘bloody’ hill.
