When the annual Kathmandu Coast to Coast took place on February 7th and 8th, there were not only a large number of locals competing - but also a large number involved in various fundraising ventures, or turning out to spectate and support. Although West Coast rain had put river levels up, resulting in a route change for those running in two day events, the weather on the whole was good for both days
of competition, except for a downpour at the Waimakariri Gorge on Day two. The race started as usual on the West Coast’s, Kumara Beach, before traversing the width of the South Island, and finishing on the East Coast at New Brighton Beach. Competitors took part in the Longest Day (Individual February 8th), Two Day Individual, Two Day Two Person, Two Day Three Person,

Two Day Tandem or Mountain Run events. Numerous spectators turned out at Waimakariri Gorge, Klondyke Corner, points along the way and the finish line to cheer on competitors. Congratulations to all those who completed this event, with many not only achieving personal bests, but also outstanding results. Commiserations to those who unfortunately didn’t finish for
various reasons, hopefully their time will come. Many who competed are already looking forward to next year’s race. The Coast to Coast has become almost a right of passage for multisport athletes from around the world with over 20,000 people having completed the event since 1983 when just 25 hardy souls took on the 243km challenge over two days.

The Two Rivers Community Trust have a simple vision: to be a resilient community where people belong, contribute and flourish - Naku te rourou nau te rourou ka ora ai te iwi - With your basket and my basket the people will live. Over 1400 community members got to feel that connectedness as they came together to enjoy some good, old-fashioned, fun at the annual Malvern Family Fun Day held in Darfield on Waitangi Day (February 6th) 2020. “The weather was glorious and the vibe was high, enjoyment by those attending was everywhere you looked,” commented Rachael Inch, Inch on behalf of event organisers, the Two Rivers Community Trust. “It was clear that locals respected the resource as people took care of their own rubbish and left nothing lying around,” she added. The day began with sack and wheelbarrow races, and Selwyn Parenting Network had a great time with children at their gumboot throwing competition, while promoting the service they provide. Local volunteers who run services, and are involved in many groups; Malvern Community Vehicle Trust, St John, Malvern Hub, Foodbank, Two Rivers Community Trust, and Malvern Community Patrol turned up to showcase what they do for the community. The Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade took families on rides with their vintage fire engine. There was an array of colour at the hugely popular Selwyn Creative Network water gun painting station, while their community partners at Heenolly painted intricate henna designs on children. There were also two face painting tents working hard to transform the faces of eager youngsters. Pedalmania and Selwyn Sports Trust had their activities humming and the Darfield Plunket, Toy Library and Playcentre, plus PAUA provided activities for smaller children. “Candy floss and sausages raised funds for the Two Rivers Community Trust to continue serving the local area with events like this,” Rachael added. “As midday approached it was time to recognise New

The Selwyn youth band ‘Out of Control’ rocked the stage and was well received by the crowd. “It was the team of volunteers who pulled this event together and made it special,” Rachael said. “You can have the world’s best event planning, but without wonderful people who remember the little things; who run the stalls, set up tables and chairs, make the community welcome, tirelessly run our rural services with little support and
of course the contributing community-led organisations from wider Selwyn, it would not be such a successful event,” Rachael stressed. “Our rural community of Malvern is strong and together we will continue the ethos of what a neighbour can do for a neighbour,” she concluded.

Sunday, February 2nd was a devastating, early morning, for business owner Jacob Barwick when the premises that housed h i s p o p u l a r r e s t a u r a nt Woodley’s on Darfield’s South Terrace was destroyed by fire. The fire, believed to be electrical, non-suspicious, and starting around the chiller area, has rendered the building unable to be occupied. While the exterior, from a passersby point
of view, may look as if it’s business as usual, the interior and the lack of roof belies that. The structure of the building, which is constructed of concrete block, plastered over, has also been compromised by heat and water in the fire, while the ceiling and the roof have totally gone. Jacob’s stock, fittings and chattels are all beyond redemption. “At this stage,” Jacob said, “I
am just dealing with insurance agents and trying to work out my plan of action for the future,” he said. “I suspect the building will need substantial work to ensure its survival, but that is a decision to be made by its owner.” Jacob was appreciative of the swift actions of fire fighters, who prevented the flames spreading into either the boundary hedge, or other buildings alongside.

L oc a l b u s in e s s C e n t r a l Insurance evolved from the very practical knowledge gained by owner Ewan Thompson and his wife Annette Harris during their years as agricultural contactors. The couple owned and operated an agricultural contracting business for a number of years and during that time became aware of the need for insurance for both themselves and their business. The correct insurance, not an expensive outlay that wasn’t fit for purpose. In the late 80’s the couple realised that the changes in both Government policy and the weather, were both reasons for not only a career change, but also one that could benefit others found in a similar situation. After much deliberation, and on the advice of their then insurance agent, Central Insurance was born. Both Ewan and Annette comment that thirty three years on they are still in the insurance business and have thoroughly enjoyed assisting and informing people about their personal insurances. Ewan and Annette hail from Omakau in Central Otago, before moving to Lumsden in Southland where they operated their contracting business. “We then made Alexandra our home town,” Annette explained, “where we brought up our five children and embarked on the insurance industry.” In 1998 to assist with the evergrowing needs of their family (horses, sport, education and motorcross) the couple made the decision to move to Canterbury. “We have both been very
involved in Hockey and Rugby over the years, playing local and rep and later on taking roles in coaching and on committees.” Nowadays for relaxation Ewen enjoys fishing while Annette undertakes horse trekking. Initially in Canterbury a lifestyle block in West Melton was home, with an office in Rolleston, before a move was made to a new home in Rolleston township. Country born and bred, the couple didn’t find urban life in Rolleston to their liking, finding themselves hankering after hill views and rural life. “Hororata has both of these for us and so in 2018 we purchased our property in the lovely rural community of Hororata,” Annette said. “Nowadays technology makes it easy for us to close our Rolleston office and operate from our home base. “We love being part of our children’s lives and those of our

nine wonderful grandchildren, now they’re all in New Zealand, so being centrally located is a huge bonus. Local Darfield resident Dave Armstrong has a passion for business in New Zealand and has spent the last seven years employed in the finance industry. This includes thorough modelling of how particular parts of the network
will handle various traffic patterns. This is followed up with negotiations with NZTA to sort priority and funding assistance. “The recent announcements from NZTA reinforce the good work that our Council has placed into the preparation and advocacy. The whole of Canterbury received $159 million in funding and Selwyn’s share is 37%. “The community in West Melton have been very active in pursuing an upgrade for the intersection of SH73 and Weedons Ross Road. This is a busy and dangerous intersection. The funded lights will allow walkers, cyclists and vehicles to cross SH73, making daily activities such as travelling to school and going to work much safer. “The over-bridge in Rolleston, to connect Hoskyns Road to Rolleston Drive has been on our books for many years waiting for NZTA co-funding. Their decision to step up with funding means
that access for freight and workers to and from Izone, Iport and the growing industrial park will be more fluid. It will provide safe crossing of the railway line and SH1 for public transport, walkers, cyclists and vehicles. This bridge provides more efficient access to Rolleston from the west of our district for those accessing supermarkets, the aquatic centre, and other areas of the town. “The stretch of SH1 from Rolleston to Burnham is the most dangerous section of road in the district. Late last year the Malvern and Rolleston News was approached about repurposing spare copies of the News for a project. Carol Rains a committee member for the New Zealand Floral Art Conference, this year entitled ‘New Foundations 2020’ and held in Christchurch, wanted to get creative with the News. Carol has made 350 bags, envelopes and shoe liners for the Conference to be held from May 1st to 3rd. Adding a suggestion to the attendees that the bags and envelopes are good to read also! Each item takes around 15 minutes to construct. With Carol’s initiative, enthusiasm and countless hours
the Malvern (and Rolleston) News has been turned into conference bags, envelopes for tickets, shoe liners and gift bags for sale items. “The News has been transformed into bags that have been made to be read all over and in true Cantabrian style the black and white newspapers are enhanced with red,” commented Shirley Russ, Russ a member of Floral Art in Canterbury. These products will also be able to be viewed at a Latimer Square exhibition from April 30th - May 3rd when the Group presents an environmental art display, with works from throughout New Zealand. Carol is based near Dunsandel
and has been interested in floral art her whole life. She is a foundation member of the Avon Floral Art Cub and has gone on to qualify as a national teacher and judge. “I love using anything that is available in the garden, and elsewhere, rather than buying. So that was the idea behind making the Malvern and Rolleston News into registration bags and envelopes,” Carol commented enthusiastically. Waitangi Day was shared by eighty people who attended the Fundraiser at the Kirwee Bowling Club to raise money for the Kirwee Fire Brigade. The afternoon was described as being full of fun for all. People who had never played bowls before, enjoyed learning a new skill and those who were veterans of the sport enjoyed sharing their tips. Fun such as the person bowling the wobbly bowl then having to wear a fire helmet, to bowls coming from every direction aiming to get closest to the large black spider placed in the centre of the green, were all part and parcel of the entertaining day. Prizes were won and a wonderful barbeque was available so all players could sit and socialise after games. “We need to give a lot of credit to the women and men in FENZ (Fire and Emergency NZ) who volunteer their time to support the community,” said a spokesperson for the bowling event. “It was great to see so many people giving back and supporting the day,” they added.
An event like this can not go ahead without sponsors, along with the time and effort donated by giving people. Organisers give thanks to all those individuals and businesses who supported them in any way. It
“The Malvern Women’s Pair’s Bowling Championship was held on Sunday, February 9th at the Darfield Bowling Club, in perfect conditions,” Wendy Clucas, Clucas Secretary, Malvern Bowling Sub Centre, reported. “Not only was the weather kind to us but you couldn’t have asked for a better green to play on,” she added. “All credit must go to the Green keepers who have got it to such a wonderful condition. “It was great to see a ‘full green’ with sixteen couples competing in this one day championship which was played in real, good spirits,” Wendy said. “The eventual winners
from Kirwee, were the only team with four wins skipped by Rosie Croft and lead Marian Galloway,” Galloway Wendy added. Runners up were also a team from Kirwee, Yvonne Boulton skip and Bev Dillon lead. Third place went to a composite team

Metro Ara Institute of Canterbury 1st XI Plate 2 Day Competition Match One DHS v St Bede’s On Saturday February 1st and Sunday February 2nd our team took on St Bede’s 3rd XI at Darfield in our first two day game. DHS batted first and were in trouble at 118/7 with the St Bede’s bowlers hitting a good length. Then a young Johnny Millar (47 runs) and Jesse Gray (82 runs) put on a 116 run partnership for the eighth wicket. It was a great effort where we ended up at 246/8 after sixty overs (max for first innings). With forty overs left in the day our bowling unit went very well. Top performers were Jesse Sutherland 3/6 off five overs and Todd Thomas 2/17 from three overs. Our team got St Bede’s out for 54; at the day’s end. Day 2 - We put them back into bat. It was hot - I got the Coke and Jetplanes ready as I knew it was going to be a battle to get
ten wickets in 34 degrees! The young men did me proud in tough conditions to get outright victory. It was a massive team effort in that heat to get the ten wickets. Isaac Earl bowled seventeen overs of leg spin straight, with no reward at one end, so our pace bowlers could have short, sharp spells, in the heat. Todd Thomas bowled a great length 1/7 from seven overs and Jesse Sutherland 2/18; but everyone chipped in. Match Two: DHS v Riccarton High School 1st XI February 6th and February 8th we played at Riccarton in a two day match. Batting first we got ourselves through to 181, all out; it was another team effort. Ollie S. (27), Jesse S. (24), Isaac E. (31) and Will D. (32). It was RHS time to bat; Jesse S. 3/12 off eight overs, Todd T. 1/10 off six overs, did a great job opening up. We used nine

bowlers to share the load amongst the young men which I feel is important as they are all capable with the ball in hand. Our team bowled them out for 120 on the second to last ball of the day and claimed first innings points. Day 2: It was a rain affected day. We had a 61 run lead needing to set a good Riccarton HS team a total chase, but also wanting to bowl them out. We battled through to 137 all out. Strong runs by Jesse S. S (28), Will D. (19), Jordon R. (16) gave us a great lead - 198. We needed ten wickets in 51 overs. We did it; an outright victory; wickets shared all through the seven bowlers used. An awesome ‘team effort’. These young men are doing Darfield High School proud in a tough Christchurch Metro competition.
