Local mountain biker Ethan Rose is back into racing already, having just competed at the Oceania and National Mountain Bike Champs in Dunedin, during the weekend of January 24th and 26th. His is a name that will undoubtedly appear in the sporting headlines of world, elite events in the future. Ethan earned the honours of being named the Oceania Champion, as well as the National Under 19 XCO (at only sixteen) Champion both on the same weekend.

Ethan competed at Dunedin, Signal Hill bike park to start his 2020 mountain bike cross country season off with the two big races.

First up on Friday the 24th was the Oceania MTB Championship, Ethan at sixteen riding in his first year as an Under nineteen’s rider lined up with thirty of the best cross country (XC) riders in Oceania.

“Unfortunately he was seeded 29th, for some unknown reason,” commented his Dad Adam Heard, Heard “meaning he had to start at the back of the field.

But this didn’t stop him getting to the front of the race before the end of lap one of the five lap race,” he explained. “Ethan then settled into his own pace pulling away from the rest of the field each lap before finishing first in a time of 1:14:24. This was over two minutes ahead of the second place getter,” Adam enthused, “giving him the 2020 Oceania U19 XCO title and the Oceania Jersey!”

Ethan added that he was really happy with his ride, “I didn’t know how good my form would be going into this race, as it’s the first big one of the year.

However the legs felt good and I’m super happy with that. It wasn’t great having to start at the back with my main competition starting near the front, but I couldn’t change that, so I focussed on passing as

many riders as I could, as soon as I could! It’s all good practice for my races coming up,” he added.

Sunday 26th was the National MTB Championship, and again it was staged at the Signal Hill bike park.

“In a smaller field of seventeen, without the Australians racing, Ethan started at the front as the top seeded ride,”

This Valentine's Day we have prepared a very special night!

Pancake Recipe INGREDIENTS: • 1 cup self raising flour • 2 Tbsp white sugar • ½ tsp finely grated lemon zest (optional) • 1 cup milk (or Soy/Rice milk) • 1 egg, lightly beaten • 30g butter, melted (or margarine) TO SERVE: • 2 bananas, sliced • 1 punnet blueberries (or frozen berries defrosted) • Maple syrup, honey maple, vanilla, caramel, butterscotch topping.

METHOD: Sift the flour and white sugar into a bowl. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients. Add the lemon zest, milk, egg and melted butter/margarine and whisk to combine. Heat a large non stick frying pan over medium low heat and grease lightly with butter or oil.

For each pancake, place 2 tablespoons of batter into the pan. Cook for 2 minutes or until bubbles form on the surface.

Turn and cook for a further 1 to 2 minutes or until the pancakes are cooked through.

Garnish as desired.

Danz Fit owner and teacher Leisa Yaxley commented that she was super proud of all the students last year and the growth that she had seen in their abilities.

“Our motto at Danz Fit has always been ’Hard Work Pays Off’ and it has most certainly paid off,” she said.

The year began at the Westport performing arts competition where twenty Danz Fit students competed with many receiving trophies and achieving personal bests.

“I was really happy with the results gained as this competition attracts dancers from all around the south Island,” Leisa explained.

Throughout the year Danz Fit dancers entered competitions throughout Canterbury, along with taking part in the prestigious NZ Dance Awards all producing great results.

Senior students were given the opportunity of attending the Kairos Dance Convention in Auckland (with its overseas tutors); something they have attended for the past four years.

Danz Fit’s last competition of the year was the Greymouth Performing Arts event with twenty eight students competing.

“This is always a fun competition, as a lot of the hard work has been done throughout the preceding year,” Leisa explained.

“It was a great way to finish our competition year with the majority of our students being in the top three places for most of their dances. The performance teams landed six firsts, a third and fourth place plus four students received: • Mst promis Jnr Jazz Dancer • Mst promising Snr Dancer • Mst potential musical theatre • O/all enjoy perform of dance.

The year ended with the end of year Show attended by around 250 people. It enabled the dancers to showcase their love of dance in Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical and Musical Theatre to family and friends.

“This was the first production that Danz Fit students had performed in a theatre, it was well received and we will continue to keep that a tradition now,” Leisa commented.

2020 has begun with a hiss and a roar for Danz Fit

students. Previously Leisa had accompanied dancers to Showcase on the Australian Gold Coast, but the opportunity to compete at the event in one of its new locations, Christchurch, was an opportunity not to miss.

Eight individual dancers entered having practised hard during their school holidays.

“We were rewarded with some awesome results,” Leisa enthused, “four first places, a second and a third, as well as the majority gaining gold and high gold awards. This is an event that attracts dancers from throughout New Zealand and Australia. We’re also very surprised and super proud of our three junior dancers who were placed in the top ten dancers for their age division,” Leisa reported.

“All in all this was a fantastic achievement and a great way to start the year,” Leisa said.

“Danz Fit are adding further genres to their teaching curriculum with: Shelley Watson from Australia teaching beginner tap classes, Natasha Boon teaching the Acro Ballet and Contemporary classes, Brooke Stevenson teaching Hip Hop and myself, (Leisa Yaxley) taking Performance, Musical Theatre, and Jazz.

“For those that are interested there is also the opportunity to sit exams.

“For those parents who just want their children to enjoy dance and not have the pressure of competition, we have lots of options as well,” Leisa concluded.

St John is present in local communities in more ways than just the yellow, or white, ambulances that are here when you need us most.

St John in Darfield has not run a First Aid course locally since before the Earthquakes.

However on February 15th there will once again be a course on offer. This is a Level 1 course meeting workplace needs, but it is being organised for Darfield community, supported by the local Area Committee, as a way of saying thanks.

Courses are available in the city, but this course avoids travel, parking, and similar hassles, but is delivered to the same high standard and a chance to be with locals.

Previous tutors have said, “your skills are often those that save lives, you come across the situation, deal with it as best you can, and then you call us!”

This is so very true, and it is important that you are able to do that. Training always helps common sense.

Many of you will be involved in small businesses, or part of a larger team, a sports team, or just part of an active family. This course will equip you with lifesaving skills, build confidence, and add the ‘feelgood’ factor by

being able to help others in need. Doesn’t that sound great? What a great deal.

Please support this course. But better still, use the skills you learn to help those that may be in need, that are in the community around you.

On Sunday, February 16th Sheffield Rugby Club will host the fifth annual Mountain Bike race on some pristine private hill country farms, thanks to the Stokes family ‘Wyndale’, the Cleland family ‘Annavale Station’ and the Ferguson family, family ‘Baldoon’.

Like last year the event offers a 24 kilometre MTB race, 12 kilometre recreational ride for more relaxed riders, and a 11 km trail run.

They also have a section for those bikers who are loyal to their own rugby club. They must wear their Club jersey and the winner of this section wins a $300 voucher from R80 to go towards their Club’s junior teams’ resources and more importantly, bragging rights for the year!

All proceeds from the MTB race will go towards the Sheffield Rugby Club’s kids’ rugby, while the running race funds will go toward the Sheffield Cricket Club.

The Swimming Canterbury West Coast Championships and Para Swimming Canterbury Championships were held at Moana Pool in Dunedin from January 23rd - 26th. Selwyn Swim Club swimmers competed extremely well coming away with thirty medals, along with many personal bests.

Chloe Newbigging aged fifteen from Darfield, swam for the Selwyn Swim Club in the fifteen to sixteen year old girls’ category.

Before this competition Chloe

and her teammates completed two weeks of intensive swim training to get them ready for the event, following the Christmas break.

They attended a week’s training camp in Timaru where they swam twice a day, ran and also fitted in different exercise activities daily.

“I enjoyed camp and the team building we did, even though we were pushed to our limits sometimes, but I feel that I am already starting to see the results,” Chloe said

Since its inception the biennial Castle Hill Village Easter Art weekend has always been a non -profit community-based, fun, family, event supporting local artists, and the planning is well underway for the forthcoming event, this Easter. The Exhibition opening evening will take place on Good Friday, in the Castle Hill Community Hall, accompanied by various workshops in and around the Village over the following two days.

The Art Exhibition has evolved full circle with a group of volunteers organising this year’s event on the 10th -12th April. It is run to support and celebrate the many artists that gain inspiration from the area, through an exhibition of work and various workshops for visitors to attend throughout the weekend. Over the years it has provided support for the environment in which Castle Hill village is situated in both monetary and practical ways, to Kea Conservation, the Craigieburn Trails and wilding pine control.

It is no surprise that this beautiful region attracts and inspires many artists. The Craigieburn area, Castle Hill, and Kura Tawhiti, have always

been influential for a variety of artists producing some wonderful work over the years.

Castle Hill Creative are the organisers of this, the seventh event at Easter 2020. “As we were a new group last time around, we are keen to extend our database of local artists. We are very keen to hear of any new artists in the area, as it would be great to add to our previous exhibitors with some new talent,” said Helene Blomfield, Blomfield one of the community organisers.

“It’s very exciting to be hosting

it this Easter, and we want to add a small ‘pop up’ shop to this year’s exhibition and extend the range of creative items up for sale,” explained Renate Galetzka, Galetzka also a member of the organising group. “We’re appreciative of the wonderful help from Selwyn District Creative Communities again also,” she added.

The Government’s recent announcement of infrastructure funding has given Selwyn a few ‘crumbs’, according to Selwyn MP Amy Adams.

Adams “While I am relieved that the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) has finally confirmed funding for some projects that I have been advocating for over

the past few years, I am disappointed that our region is receiving a very small slice of the pie compared to other regions such as Auckland which has been allocated billions,” Amy said.

“I know that local residents will welcome the news that NZTA has finally committed to

carrying out desperatelyneeded safety improvements at the intersection of SH73 and Weedons Ross Rd in West Melton, but may be frustrated that work will not start on these until 2021,” Amy added.

“While I also welcome the announcement of upgrades to a number of intersections along State Highway 1 (SH1) between Burnham and Rolleston, these represent only a fraction of what is needed,” Amy concluded.

When the annual Kathmandu Coast to Coast takes place on February 7th and 8th there will not only be a large number of locals competing - but also a large number involved in various fundraising ventures and turning out to spectate. However these competitors set off on Friday February 7th, camp overnight at Klondyke Corner following the Mountain Run and before completing the kayak and final cycle stage on Saturday.

There is also a Two Day Tandem Team event in which teams of two complete the entire course, over the two days, together.

They must always be within fifty metres of each other on the bike and run legs and complete the river leg in a double kayak.

Additionally the Mountain Run is an option for those just wanting

to tackle the run section of the event.

The Schools’ section is open to students enrolled at High School on race day and is a three person team’s event.

The Coast to Coast also offers the Corporate Challenge Two Day Event. This sees corporate colleagues work together as a three person team completing one section of the race each.

While the Waimakariri Gorge is generally the most popular vantage point for spectators on Saturday - it’s hoped folk will turn out wherever they can to cheer on competitors.

In warm, blustery conditions the first Gunyah Garden Party took place on Sunday, February 2nd.

However the gorgeous Gunyah grounds, surrounded by large, mature trees made it a perfect place for a party as it sheltered those attending from the winds, leaving them to enjoy the summery conditions.

It was reported to be a splendid day with everyone enjoying fine food, wine, whisky and gin, while relaxing to the swinging jazz music from The Curio Club. “The Gin masterclass presented by Michael FraserFraser-Milne of Whisky Galore was a highlight of the day for many, as was a talk on the history of Gunyah by owner Simonetta Ferrari,” Ferrari explained Cindy Driscoll, Driscoll Executive Officer, Hororata Community Trust, event co-organisers.

The Gunyah Garden Party offered a vastly different experience to traditional food and wine festivals.

Guests were able to sit with the winemakers for an appreciation tasting, providing the opportunity to really showcase great Selwyn wines from Braided River, Lone Goat and Melton Estate.

UPDATE The Malvern Community Board held its first meeting of the year on Monday, January 27th in the Darfield Library and Service Centre.

Four members of the Malvern Community Trust addressed the Board with the Board agreeing to support, in principle, the Trust’s proposal to provide

property management and wrap around services to social housing tenants in Darfield.

Board members discussed issues in their reports before they considered, and approved, three discretionary funds applications.

In his report to the Board, the Chief Executive asked Board members to consider key issues they would like to see addressed during the February on-the-road meeting, scheduled to be held in Arthur’s Pass. He also told Board members that

there had been an increased workload in especially the resource consent area.

The Board discussed the 2019 Darfield Christmas in the Park event noting that it went very well. The organising committee was already busy working on the 2020 programme.

The Board will have its next meeting in Arthur’s Pass.

Committees in the area will be invited to attend.

Ethan said he was stoked to win the national title, “I can now wear the national fern jersey for the 2020 season, it will really mean a lot to me racing overseas,” he commented. “It was a great weekend to take both wins and gave me maximum UCI points, which will help my world rantings,” Ethan said.

Ethan’s form and convincing wins in both Under 19 races sees his lap times put him in the top five elites and the top three Under 23’s at both Oceania’s and National’s. “Riding like a man on a mission,” Adam smiled, “he was the second fastest of the day behind Anton Cooper the professional Elite XC mountain biker ranked twentieth in the world.”

WINDOWS UPDATE Windows updates; one of the trials of life. Your nice shiny machine comes to you fresh from the factory with what ever the latest version of Windows was out when it was made. When you start it up and go through all the set ups, as we did in the January column of Computer Corner, the only thing leO for it to do is to start this update process.

If you don’t do anything manually Windows itself will look to the Internet every 17 to 22 hours and gets what it needs. The problem for you is that when the update is downloaded and installed, someGmes Windows doesn’t know how to handle the size or complexity of the update. Strange things can then start happening on your machine because it needs to update the final part of the puzzle by re-starGng, but it doesn’t tell you that. The weird thing is that with other updates of a criGcal nature it will tell you, saying it’s Gme to restart thereby finishing off the downloaded and installed update. If you are working on your machine and not knowing why it’s doing strange things, then the first thing that you should do is re-start. You may or may not see updates applied when you re-start, but you can be assured that your machine will be loading and applying correctly, as it boots.

To manually do Windows updates, go bo'om leO to the magnifying glass and type Windows Update. Open that then check for updates. It will go away taking note of what you have and at the Windows update site look for what is available before downloading the difference. Thinking you have done the right thing you re-start the machine and carry on only for it to behave weirdly later on ….why because there are yet more updates. How come?

Windows must download ‘abc’ before it can download ‘def’ and so on, and so on, and that’s why you need to check back on Windows Update Gme and Gme again unGl it tells you that you are up to date.
